The Lancia Aprea is more than just a boat—it's a floating masterpiece, a modern tribute to Italy's golden age of yachting.

It revives the spirit of the past while embracing the future, crafting a yacht that’s both a nod to tradition and a leap into contemporary design.

The hull, designed by the esteemed Victory Design studio, delivers a smooth and powerful ride, effortlessly gliding over waves with stability and grace. This is a yacht that doesn’t just honor its heritage—it elevates it to new heights.

The Lancia Aprea is more than just a yacht—it’s a piece of living history, a celebration of Italy’s rich maritime heritage, and a showcase of the finest craftsmanship. Every detail, from the deep, powerful hull designed for optimal performance and fuel efficiency to the seamless deck that offers safe and luxurious passage from stern to bow, is a testament to the skill and passion of Italy's master shipbuilders.

But what truly sets the Lancia Aprea apart is its soul. This is a yacht with a story, a vessel that carries with it the spirit of the craftsmen who have been perfecting their art since 1890. A Journey of Art and Elegance

STEPPING INTO THE WORLD OF TIMELESS LUXURY, THE VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS (VSOE) IS ABOUT TO DEBUT AN EXTRAORDINARY NEW ADDITION THAT REDEFINES THE ART OF TRAVEL. THE ICONIC TRAIN, KNOWN FOR ITS UNPARALLELED ELEGANCE AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE, WILL SOON INTRODUCE AN INNOVATIVE SLEEPER CARRIAGE—L’OBSERVATOIRE—A CREATION BY RENOWNED FRENCH ARTIST JR, BLENDING ART, HISTORY, AND OPULENCE.

Images courtesy of Balmond

L’Observatoire, the latest and most exclusive suite aboard the VSOE, invites passengers on a voyage that goes beyond mere transportation. Envisioned as a "gallery on rails," the carriage is a fusion of old-world charm and modern artistry, reminiscent of Renaissance-era cabinets of curiosity and astronomical observatories. JR’s personal touch is evident throughout, with his own objets d’art, unique photography, and whimsical artifacts carefully curated to captivate and inspire guests during their journey.

The cabin’s design pays homage to the train’s storied past while infusing a fresh, contemporary perspective. Two oculus-shaped skylights in the ceiling allow passengers to marvel at the stars, while the reimagined wooden marquetry—a signature of the VSOE—now features an urban cityscape with JR standing on a rooftop. This playful yet sophisticated blend of old and new echoes throughout the space, making L’Observatoire a tribute to both the train’s heritage and the artist’s avant-garde vision.

Inside, each detail has been meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of wonder and exploration. The bedroom, draped in lush green leather resembling a forest canopy, offers a serene retreat with a plush double bed and a freestanding tub. An adjoining bathroom, designed with the same attention to detail, adds a luxurious touch to the experience.

The lounge, adorned with bespoke seating, transforms to suit the occasion, whether it’s for intimate dining or simply enjoying the picturesque views outside. Hidden surprises abound, with a library stocked with rare books and curated vinyl records that have inspired

JR. Tucked away behind a secret door, a cozy Tea Room awaits discovery, complete with a miniature train installation and sculptures by the artist himself.

As an "artwork in motion," L’Observatoire goes beyond the ordinary luxury travel experience. “We wanted to create a space that sparks curiosity and invites exploration, all while maintaining the timeless elegance of the VSOE,” explains JR. His vision, coupled with the craftsmanship of Atelier Philippe Allemand, brings to life an unparalleled fusion of art and storytelling.

Launching in March 2025, L’Observatoire promises to be more than just a train ride. Guests will enjoy an immersive experience, complete with fine dining, curated wine selections, and 24-hour butler service. Every aspect of the stay is designed to indulge the senses and ignite the imagination, making it a journey unlike any other.

Boucheron Brings Parisian Glamour to Madison Avenue

THE VIBRANT STREETS OF NEW YORK HAVE LONG BEEN A CANVAS FOR ICONIC LUXURY BRANDS, AND NOW THE CITY HAS WELCOMED ONE OF PARIS’S MOST LEGENDARY JEWELERS. BOUCHERON, THE HISTORIC JEWELRY MAISON, HAS OFFICIALLY OPENED ITS FIRST-EVER MANHATTAN BOUTIQUE AT 747 MADISON AVENUE, GIVING THE BIG APPLE AN EXCITING NEW JEWEL IN ITS CROWN.

Why New York, you ask? According to Boucheron’s CEO, Hélène Poulit-Duquesne, it’s been a dream in the making for a decade. “New York has been on our radar since I joined the company,” she shared. The city, known for its demanding clientele who expect nothing but the best, seemed like the perfect fit. And after five years of searching for the ideal spot, Boucheron finally found its home among luxury neighbors like Chanel and Pomellato.

The 3,900-square-foot boutique offers more than just a shopping experience—it’s a celebration of the brand’s heritage and its evolution. Inspired by both the elegance of Paris and the flair of New York, the boutique fuses these two fashion capitals in its design.

Inside, you'll find nods to Boucheron's flagship on Place Vendôme, like chandeliers from Maison Delisle and a green lacquered chest reminiscent of the one in Paris. But what truly sets this boutique apart is its distinctly New York vibe, embracing the sleek geometry and bold style of the American Art Deco movement.

Each Boucheron boutique around the world tells a unique story, and the Madison Avenue location is no exception. The VIP rooms, each designed with a different narrative, invite guests to immerse themselves in a luxurious yet relaxed setting. Poulit-Duquesne

explained, “It’s about feeling at home, being in a family home,” and this ambiance is reflected throughout the space.

Of course, no Boucheron boutique would be complete without its dazzling array of jewels. The Quatre collection, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, takes center stage. Known for its striking mix of textures and gold colors, it’s a favorite among American clients for its innovative and bold design. And for those who love a little whimsy, the boutique offers Boucheron’s beloved animal characters, from Wladimir the Cat to Hopi the Hummingbird.

To mark its grand debut in New York, Boucheron hosted a stunning three-day pop-up at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, just 30 blocks away. This exclusive event showcased a high jewelry collection never before seen in the US, alongside vintage treasures

from Boucheron’s heritage, like an Art Nouveau diamond and ruby brooch and a bracelet once owned by Wallis Simpson.

Now that Boucheron has made its mark on Madison Avenue, the maison has no plans of slowing down. Within the next year, they’re set to open boutiques in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Miami, with plans to add about two new US locations annually.

For Poulit-Duquesne, the expansion into the US is a long-term investment. “Coming to the US is not a one-shot deal,” she emphasized. “You have to invest for ten years at minimum to be sure you have the right presence.” And with Boucheron’s timeless elegance and bold creativity, it’s clear the brand is here to stay.

New York, your jewelry scene just got a little more dazzling.

Welcome, Boucheron!

WELLNESS

THE PSYCHEDELIC RENAISSANCE

A JOURNEY FROM ANCIENT RITUALS TO MODERN MICRODOSING

In recent years, a subtle yet powerful shift has occurred in the world of wellness—one that intertwines ancient traditions with modern science.

At the center of this movement is the practice of microdosing, particularly with psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms. What was once a sacred tool used in religious rituals by ancient civilizations is now being embraced as a means to enhance creativity, cognitive function, and overall well-being.

Psilocybin mushrooms have been revered for centuries for their mystical and spiritual properties. These “flesh of the gods,” as the Aztecs and Mayans called them, played a significant role in the religious and shamanic practices of ancient Mesoamerican cultures. Mushrooms were seen as a bridge to the spirit world, used in ceremonies for divination, healing, and spiritual insights.

However, with the advent of Western colonization, the

use of psychedelics, including mushrooms, was suppressed, their sacred status diminished in the face of cultural and religious shifts. It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that these substances resurfaced in Western consciousness, this time as tools for exploring the human mind.

In the 1950s and 1960s, a new wave of interest in psychedelics emerged, fueled by researchers, psychiatrists, and counterculture figures. Psychedelics were seen as a way to unlock new dimensions of consciousness and self-awareness. Figures like Timothy Leary and Terence McKenna became advocates for the potential of these substances to foster personal growth and expand perceptions of reality.

Yet, the promise of psychedelics was cut short in the 1970s when they were classified as Schedule I substances in the United States. This legal barrier halted most research and pushed psychedelics into the shadows for several decades.

Today, psychedelics are experiencing a renaissance, particularly through the practice of microdosing. Microdosing involves taking small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms—typically around one-tenth to one-twentieth of a regular dose. Unlike the full-scale trips associated with psychedelic use in the past, microdosing aims to integrate the subtle benefits of these substances into daily life.

Advocates of microdosing report enhanced creativity, improved mood, and greater focus. It’s a practice that has found favor among a diverse group of individuals, from tech entrepreneurs to artists, athletes, and those seeking to boost their mental well-being.

The resurgence of interest in psychedelics, and particularly microdosing, is more than just a trend—it’s a reconnection with ancient wisdom. As science begins

to catch up with what ancient cultures understood intuitively, we are discovering that these substances may offer profound benefits for mental health and well-being.

While the legal and ethical landscape around psychedelics continues to evolve, the growing body of research and anecdotal evidence suggests that microdosing may hold the key to a new era of wellness. By carefully integrating these ancient tools into modern life, we can potentially enhance our creativity, emotional resilience, and connection to the world around us.

As we continue to explore the possibilities of microdosing, it’s clear that we are on the cusp of a new chapter in the story of human consciousness—one that blends the wisdom of the past with the promise of the future.

GOLDEN THREADS

Dust always blowing about the town, Except when sea-fog laid it down, And I was one of the children told

Some of the blowing dust was gold…

~ excerpt from A Peack of Gold, Robert Frost

Auniversal symbol of luxury and value, Gold's true worth lies in its less publicized qualities: malleable and durable, heavy and soft, fragile and strong, pure gold is durable, non-reactive, and resistant to corrosion, oxidation, rust, and tarnish. No wonder Gold is considered a "Noble" metal - we seek these same qualities in the most noble versions of ourselves.

Although Gold is called a heavy metal because of its high density (each of its atoms is individually very heavy), gold atoms slide past each other relatively easily, which makes the metal soft and malleable. Gold is so soft that one gram of it can be beaten into a sheet covering nearly a square meter, mirroring the flexibility and resilience we so often strive for in our lives.

In his poem “A Peck of Gold,” Robert Frost evokes the promise and disappointment of the California Gold Rush. The narrator’s echoing line, "I was one of the children told, some of the blowing dust was gold," parallels a nation's focus on the outward trappings of

wealth, a nation that would one day falsely proclaim “its streets were paved with gold.”

Gold tells the story of my ancestors, drawn to the American West by the Homesteading Act of 1862. After making their claim in Paradise Valley, MT, along the banks of the Yellowstone River, my mother’s family was met with an influx of gold miners and prospectors following the discovery of placer gold in Emigrant Gulch in 1864. Dedicated to “proving up” their claim, my ancestors turned away from the shiny allure of the gold rush in favor of creating a home for generations to come.

I live on this land today - each golden sunrise and sunset a testament to the values of those who came before me. Just as prospectors found veins of pure gold in sandstone and shale, real wealth is found deep within. It wasn’t the discovery of gold that made my ancestors “wealthy’, but their tenacity, flexibility, community, and strength. Their ability to bend to the whim of nature and meld with the land foretold their destiny.

Considered too soft for everyday wear, pure gold is traditionally alloyed with other metals for greater strength and durability. The most common metal alloyed with gold is silver. SilverBell Global has always been about the value of relationships and community, and my last name, Silver Bell, exemplifies the idea that we are stronger

together than apart. As with the most beautiful gold alloy, the durability of silver tempers the softness of pure gold to create a metal bright enough to gleam with promise and strong enough to withstand daily wear and tear. The ethos of valuing self doesn’t mean we put ourselves above others, rather it upholds the recognition that only through valuing oneself can we connect authentically with others.

From its physical properties to poetic symbolism, gold powerfully reflects our human experience: inner strength and resilience through valuing self, partnership, and community. Throughout history and in the smallest moments in our own lives, Gold’s true worth lies in its ability to reflect these noble and utterly human qualities within us.

‘Make

new friends, But keep the old, One is Silver, The other Gold’

~ from The American Songbook, sung in the round and based on the poem by Joseph Parry 1841-1903

THE POWER OF RED

How the “Red Color Theory” Elevates Style and Presence Unleashing Confidence Through Color

If you have been online lately, you’ve probably heard of the “Red Color Theory”. This phenomenon discusses that wearing red enhances a person’s attractiveness. It also mentioned that red symbolizes strength, passion, and confidence. Typically, we do not realize the impact that colors have on our subconscious, and how others perceive us. While every hue affects others around you, red is a color you should think about choosing if you want to thrive.

This vibrant and upbeat hue denotes power and tenacity and is connected to our ancestors’ ability to survive. Red subconsciously motivates and supports the wearer to act and achieve success. Unconsciously, we make assumptions about others based on the color of their clothing and anticipate particular outcomes from particular hues. The fact that some of the most prominent and successful women have purposefully donned red is not a coincidence. Nancy Reagan, the former first lady, is famously seen wearing a red suit. Princess Diana frequently appeared in public dressed in red. And of course, Marilyn Monroe’s famous red dress and red lip combo. It is also no coincidence that Christain Louboutin’s red bottoms are referred to as “the shoe with staying power.” In the early 1990s, Louboutin and his assistant were developing a shoe prototype. He designed a line of shoes influenced by the “Flowers” print by Andy Warhol. When the prototype with the flowery pattern on the pink stacked heel was returned, Louboutin was disappointed that the design didn’t “pop” as he had intended. As he was studying the design, he sensed that something was missing, and was suddenly drawn to the assistant’s vibrant red nail polish. Louboutin chose to apply the vivid red lacquer on the prototype’s soles after being struck by the eye-catching

color. When we hear Christian Louboutin talk about the shoes himself, he mentions how they make women feel empowered. He says, “They completely change your body language and you feel this sense of confidence from head to toe.”

Rarely is the impact of wearing red on the wearer acknowledged; instead, discussions of wearing red typically focus on the viewer or how other people would react to the wearer. According to a 2017 Journal of Social Psychology paper, wearing red can foster a greater sense of confidence. It simply comes down to the fact that red is a color that attracts attention, possesses high emotional resonance, and can elicit strong feelings in people. As we approach the holiday season, it is seemingly the perfect opportunity to discuss ways to wear red.

Red is a color that truly stands out against a monochromatic background, whether it be camel or olive, black, grey, or navy. It’s difficult to overwhelm red, and when you do, all the other colors tend to compete with it for attention. A red trench is a fantastic option that requires less dedication than other parts. The coat comes off as soon as you start working. Attend a meeting outside of the workplace where you need to demonstrate your strength; a red coat or trench would be perfect. Psychologically, red’s stimulating color can be used to your advantage to quicken your pulse rate and evoke feelings of excitement and urgency. The color red overall heightens feelings of physical attraction as well as desirability and attractiveness. “The Red Color Theory” has been a potent symbol in all art forms throughout history, specifically fashion. Perhaps it’s time to add more red to your wardrobe. A splash of red can help you project confidence and highlight your inner strength.

Several factors contribute to the rising clamor for pre-loved items. A significant driver is the younger generation, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, who prioritize sustainability and ethical consumption. As fashion production accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions, consumers are increasingly aware of their environmental impact. A 2021 Statista report revealed that 42% of Millennials and Gen Z are likely to shop second-hand. Brands like Vinted have reported that their members helped avoid 679 kilotonnes of CO2 emissions in 2023 by choosing pre-loved items.

The digital revolution has made luxury second-hand shopping more accessible. Platforms like Amazon, which launched Luxury Stores in 2020 in the US, and eBay, extending its authenticity guarantee to handbags over $700.00, have joined established players like Vestiaire Collective and The RealReal. These platforms often authenticate products, reassuring buyers about the legitimacy of their purchases, which has further propelled the market.

For many consumers, second-hand shopping is not just about sustainability; it's also about the excitement of uncovering unique, vintage pieces. As Cécile Wickmann, senior director of luxury at Vinted, notes, luxury resale provides access to sold-out collaborations and limited editions. The majority of pre-owned luxury items sold are watches and jewelry, indicating a preference for out-of-circulation stock.

Verification remains crucial in this market to ensure authenticity. eBay employs experts to inspect eligible items,

while Vestiaire Collective conducts both digital and physical authentication for high-value goods. Platforms like By Rotation implement stringent verification processes, fostering trust among consumers.

Historically, luxury brands have viewed the resale market with suspicion, perceiving it as a threat to their exclusivity. However, many are now recognizing it as an opportunity. Brands like Burberry and Stella McCartney are collaborating with resale platforms to promote ethical consumption while controlling the resale of their products. Vestiaire Collective’s “brand approved” initiative and resale partnerships enable brands to authenticate their items and facilitate resale, helping maintain their long-term value.

Additionally, luxury brands are increasingly investing in or acquiring second-hand platforms. Farfetch's acquisition of Luxclusif and Richemont’s purchase of Watchfinder are notable examples. Many brands are also creating pre-owned programs, such as Gucci Vintage and Rolex’s certified preowned offerings, to verify and trade in vintage pieces.

Ultimately, the luxury industry must engage with the resale market to expand its reach and promote mindful consumer habits. As the landscape evolves, those brands that adapt— whether by launching their own resale platforms or collaborating with established marketplaces—will be well-positioned to thrive. The future of luxury lies in embracing sustainability and second-hand shopping, where every item carries its own legacy, and every purchase contributes to a more responsible fashion ecosystem.

A MODERN RENAISSANCE: The Revival of a Neo-Italian Renaissance Townhouse in Brooklyn

Nestled in the heart of Park Slope, Brooklyn stands a Neo-Italian Renaissance masterpiece that has recently undergone a stunning transformation. Originally designed by the renowned architect Montrose Morris in 1898, this 9,000-square-foot limestone townhouse has been reimagined by Jason Saft, the visionary founder of Staged to Sell Home. Through a masterful blend of preservation and modern innovation, Saft has breathed new life into this historic gem, infusing it with contemporary flair while honoring its storied past.

The townhouse, located across from the verdant expanse of Prospect Park, boasts a rich architectural heritage. With its mansion-scaled proportions, intricate wood paneling, and ornate moldings, the house exemplifies the grandeur of the Neo-Italian Renaissance style. "When I was told the address, I was in," recalls Saft. "I've walked past this historic edifice for well over two decades and had always wanted to see the inside of this monumental house."

The challenge for Saft was to modernize the space while accentuating its original details. “The biggest challenge when designing the home was respecting and accentuating the original details while also modernizing, lightening the space (many rooms have dark wood paneling), and making it feel livable and less like a museum,” he explains.

Saft’s approach to modernizing the townhouse involved a delicate balance of old and new, blending pieces by some of today’s most celebrated contemporary designers—Giancarlo Valle, Sarah Sherman Samuel, Jake Arnold, and Simone Bodmer-Turner—with the home’s original architectural features. His inspiration drew from a diverse array of sources, from the elegant styling of Colin King to the eclectic influences of Billy Baldwin, Mario Buatta, and Nate Berkus. “I have historical design books that I’ve sourced at flea markets and auctions and spent the week leading up to the installation going through such a wide cross-section of images as the house spans so many time periods,” Saft notes.

A key element of Saft’s vision was to create an inviting and modern atmosphere while preserving the home's historic character. The color palette he selected plays a crucial role in achieving this balance. Drawing inspiration from the lush greenery of Prospect Park, Saft incorporated varying shades of green throughout the house. To counterbalance the heaviness of the dark wood paneling, he introduced lighter hues of cream, beige, and white, with subtle pops of pinks and purples in floral arrangements. This thoughtful selection of colors helps to create a sense of continuity between the interior and the natural surroundings outside.

In addition to the balanced color palette, Saft utilized a mix of textured materials to add depth and warmth to the home’s interiors. “I scoured my inventory for a cross-section of more traditional pieces to play with the modern materials brought in,” says Saft. The juxtaposition of rich woods with creamy linens, bright white boucles, and brass accents creates a dynamic interplay of textures that elevates the space. The parlor floor features three different wool rugs that not only add a luxurious feel but also bounce light around the room, enhancing the overall brightness of the space.

Saft’s approach to styling the townhouse was to embrace its grandeur while ensuring it felt welcoming and livedin. "The house has many historical details, which can overwhelm some and create the perception of living in a museum," he notes. To counter this, he chose pieces that combine softness and modernity, resulting in a harmonious home that feels thoughtfully curated and collected.

Remarkably, Saft's transformation of the townhouse was executed with incredible efficiency. "I had just one 30-minute site visit prior to the tenant leaving the house and then installing 3 days later," he recalls. "I worked off memory and one late-night final visit to prepare for the installation, which lasted for a day and a half. I find some of my best work comes from little to no planning time."

TRANSFORMING A HISTORIC HOME: SAFT’S FIVE TIPS

For those looking to bring a contemporary twist to a historic home, Jason Saft offers the following insights:

1. Embrace the Architecture: Work with the existing architectural elements to create balance and repetition. In this townhouse, Saft mimicked the ceiling moldings with curved ivory couches, creating a natural connectivity from top to bottom.

2. Find Harmony in Color: Use colors from the existing materials to create a sense of harmony. Saft drew inspiration from the green onyx stone in the marble mantle and the park's greenery, choosing complementary colors for the decor.

3. Brighten the Space: Introduce lighter furnishings to counterbalance dark woodwork, making the space feel brighter and more inviting.

4. Mix Old and New: A well-balanced mix of antique and contemporary pieces adds depth and character to a home. Experiment with different combinations to find the perfect blend.

5. Learn from the Past: Educate yourself on traditional design styles and use that knowledge to inform your approach. Reworking traditional pieces with modern accessories can create a balanced and cohesive look.

This Neo-Italian Renaissance townhouse in Brooklyn is a testament to the power of thoughtful design. Through Jason Saft’s innovative vision, the historic home has been transformed into a modern masterpiece that respects its past while embracing the present. By carefully balancing traditional elements with contemporary flair, Saft has created a space that is both timeless and inviting—a true modern renaissance.

Reimagining a Family Home for MODERN LIVING

A Bold Renovation

by Designer Meredith Beregovski of Georgia Street Design
Photography by Brie Williams

When a family with two young boys and busy careers decided to embark on a complete home renovation, they turned to Meredith Beregovski of Georgia Street Design to bring their vision to life. The goal? To create a stylish yet practical space that could accommodate the demands of their fast-paced lives while reflecting their unique personality

Working closely with the architect and contractor, Beregovski reimagined the layout, crafting an open and airy design that allowed for a seamless flow between spaces. The renovation not only enhanced the home's functionality but also transformed it into a vibrant, family-friendly retreat.

The heart of the renovation was Beregovski's use of striking, colorful design elements that set the tone for each room. Every space began with a bold starting point, such as the citron grasscloth that became the focal point of the dining room, the glossy lacquered walls in the study, and the statement raspberry sofa in the family room.

The renovation also included an open-concept design connecting the kitchen, breakfast area, and family room—perfect for both casual family time and entertaining. Beregovski added functional spaces such as a scullery, a wet bar, and updated the mudroom, laundry room, and master bathroom, ensuring the home worked as hard as the family did.

Every detail of the renovation was carefully curated to balance style and durability. In the breakfast room, Beregovski chose Galbraith and Paul fabric for the drapery and banquette, paired with a contemporary light fixture from Urban Electric. The kitchen featured a custom green lacquered hood in Farrow & Ball’s Green Smoke, a bold yet elegant touch that added depth to the space.

In the living room, classic furnishings were combined with modern accents, including a coffee table from Century Furniture and a sofa by Highland House, creating a warm, inviting space. The dining room's

citron grasscloth by Schumacher was complemented by sculptural dining chairs from Mr. Brown, while a luxurious Patterson Flynn Martin rug grounded the space with texture and sophistication.

The study, designed as a serene retreat, showcased a Chaddock coffee table and a refined Porta Romana lamp, adding a sense of luxury to the rich, lacquered walls.

This project is a celebration of bold choices, seamless functionality, and personalized elegance. Each room was designed to be as unique as the family it houses, providing them with a beautiful, practical space where they can live, entertain, and grow. Beregovski’s thoughtful approach created a home that balances high design with everyday living, making it the perfect retreat for a busy modern family.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF ELEGANCE:

An Exclusive Interview with Laura Fitch, Owner of Bedside Manor

AS BEDSIDE MANOR CELEBRATES ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR, WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF CATCHING UP WITH LAURA, THE VISIONARY BEHIND THIS CHERISHED CHARLOTTE INSTITUTION. HER JOURNEY FROM A QUAINT BOUTIQUE TO A THRIVING HUB OF HOME ELEGANCE IS A TESTAMENT TO PASSION, DEDICATION, AND AN UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO QUALITY.

A Milestone of Elegance R

eaching the 30-year mark is no small feat, and for Laura, it’s a moment of immense pride and gratitude.

“I feel incredibly blessed and honored to be celebrating 30 years in business!” Laura beams. “It’s rare to reach such a milestone, especially considering that only 4% of businesses survive past ten years.” She attributes this success to the people who’ve been part of her journey—dedicated employees, loyal customers, and supportive vendors. “These relationships have been the cornerstone of Bedside Manor’s success. I’m deeply grateful and excited to continue expanding on these connections.”

Laura’s journey began in 1993, with a move from Washington, D.C. to Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Buying our first home sparked the idea of opening a retail store,” she explains. At the time, Charlotte had few home furnishings options, so Laura decided to share her passion for linens and home décor with the community. “We were warmly received, and that encouraged me to take a chance on something I truly loved.”

The evolution of Bedside Manor is nothing short of remarkable. What started with a cash register and hand-written receipts in a 1,400-square-foot space at the Villa in Myers Park, focusing primarily on linens and gifts, has transformed significantly. By 1997, the store expanded to 2,600 square feet in Phillips Place, introducing furniture, tabletop items, and home décor. Embracing technology, Laura introduced a computer-based system, a website, a Bridal Registry, and in-home design services. In 2009, Bedside Manor moved to Specialty Shops, where it remains today—a testament to its continuous growth and adaptation.

So, what’s the secret behind Bedside Manor’s enduring success? Laura credits a clear vision for both the present and future. “Our industry is always changing, so flexibility with our vision and staying current on trends are key,” she says. Prioritizing customer service is also crucial. “We focus on exceeding expectations, delivering quality merchandise, and building lasting relationships. This approach fosters repeat business, positive referrals, and a loyal customer base.”

Laura’s approach to curating the store’s selection reflects her commitment to quality and ethics. “Our products must align with our values. We prioritize quality, style, and sustainability. Many of our vendors use eco-friendly practices, and several products are OEKO-TEX certified, ensuring they are free from harmful substances.”

Reflecting on the past three decades, Laura shares some of her most cherished memories. “Seeing the journey of a passionate 26-year-old and working with clients and their families has been incredibly rewarding. Collaborating on exciting projects with

customers and the design community has been a gift. The relationships I’ve formed with employees and customers are memories I will always cherish.”

The future of Bedside Manor is bright and full of promise. “We’re always planning for the future,” Laura reveals. Recent updates include redesigned cabinetry, a new point-of-sale system, and expanded bath and sleepwear areas. The website is being revamped for a more interactive experience, and the Bridal Registry has been enhanced. “We’re also expanding our private label products to offer more unique options for our customers.”

For those looking to start their own business, especially in retail, Laura offers sage advice: “Focus on what you do best and surround yourself with like-minded people. Bigger isn’t always better—quality goods and a well-utilized space can lead to success. Don’t be discouraged by the ups and downs; building strong relationships with clients is key. Challenges make you stronger and encourage creative thinking.”

As Laura celebrates this milestone, her gratitude shines through. “I’m incredibly thankful for my family, employees, and the amazing Charlotte community. Without them, I wouldn’t be here 30 years later. A recent cancer scare reinforced my gratitude for these blessings and so much more.”

The store will introduce an Anniversary candle to commemorate the 30 years, available both in-store and online.

As Bedside Manor continues to thrive and evolve, Laura’s commitment to elegance, quality, and community remains steadfast, making this anniversary not just a celebration of the past but a promising look toward the future.

CULTURE

THE BRIEF, IRONIC LIFE OF CAROLYN BESSETTE KENNEDY

Photo: Lawrence Schwartzwald/Getty Images
“There

are no second acts in American lives.”

– F. Scott Fitzgerald

For someone who has been gone from us for 25 years, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy is having a remarkable second act. And it’s not just because of the spate of new books that mark the 25th anniversary of her death – along with that of her husband, John F. Kennedy Jr., and her sister, Lauren Bessette – when the plane he was piloting crashed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard on July 16, 1999.

The fangirl “Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy” by Elizabeth Beller, the tabloid-y “Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed” by Maureen Callahan and the sober, kaleidoscopic “JFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biography” by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil

offer a “Rashomon”-like portrait of a complex woman, who has been described as both loving and self-centered.

But more than that is the phenomenon of Bessette-Kennedy’s embrace by a new generation on social media, especially TikTok, as the goddess of quiet luxury. This is best exemplified by the elegiac coffee-table book “CBK: Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, a Life in Fashion” by Sumita Kumar Nair, which juxtaposes the former Calvin Klein public relations executive’s minimalist style – shirts, pants, and

dresses in black, beige and white, red lipstick offset by spare makeup; straight blond hair swept back in a chignon – with the same looks interpreted for today.

That many of the photographs of her on the Internet and in Nair’s book are not only from official events with her husband but shots from the paparazzi who hounded her and whom she hated is the first – but not the last – irony in her brief life. (For those who say that a publicist should’ve had a better handle on her own press, remember that these men stalked and cursed her. She felt physically threatened by them. Plus, a publicist is a behindthe-scenes person. And, as any writer will tell you, it’s easier to deal with the press when the subject is someone or something other than yourself.)

No one called her “CBK” in her lifetime; nor was she beloved as a woman of class and grace as she is today, especially when favorably compared to the oft-criticized Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who has adopted a similar sartorial style. In her time, Bessette-Kennedy was viewed as an ice princess from Greenwich, but here again ironies abound.

Photo image via getty images

She was born on Jan. 7, 1966 in White Plains to a middle-class French Canadian-Italian-American family. Her mother, the former Ann Marie Messina, was a strong-minded schoolteacher; her father, William, an intense civil engineer who traveled a good deal for work. Her parents divorced when Bessette-Kennedy was 8, and, according to Beller’s “Once Upon a Time,” her mother and the children –Carolyn and older twin sisters Lauren and Lisa – struggled until Ann married the widowed Richard Freeman, M.D., chief of orthopedic surgery at White Plains Hospital, and moved with the girls to his home in neighboring Greenwich.

We tend to view the past through the lens of the present, but neither White Plains Hospital nor Greenwich was the powerhouse each is today, with the hospital an expanding five-star medical center and Greenwich a mecca for Wall Street wealth. Bessette-Kennedy grew up in an upper-middle-class household on Lake Avenue, one of the serpentine thoroughfares that now constitutes the town’s tony backcountry. But the family hardly moved in Kennedyesque circles. Instead the fashionable, fun-loving Bessette-Kennedy – who transferred from Greenwich High School to the stricter St. Mary’s High School at her mother’s behest – earned money babysitting and working at the sporting goods store Threads & Treads. and at Caldor, the discount department store that had locations in nearby Port Chester and Greenburgh.

“…As teenagers we had both worked for Caldor, she behind the jewelry counter and I at the customer service desk,” Carole Radziwill, Bessette-Kennedy’s close friend and cousin by her marriage to JFK Jr.’s cousin Anthony Radziwill, writes in her poignant 2005 book “What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship & Love.” “What were the odds that John would (also) bring home a girl from Caldor?” It was something the tight quartet joked about – and their circle noted.

“Carolyn was beautiful, intense, funny, smart, but if you could pick on her for one thing, it would be that she came from…what, a Connecticut upper-middle-class background that wasn’t blue blood,” Sasha Chermayeff, a JFK Jr. Phillips Andover Academy classmate, observes in “JFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biography.”

But Bessette-Kennedy – who had been steeled by her parents’ divorce, her maternal family’s independent work ethic and a career dealing with Calvin Klein’s VIP clients, which is how she met JFK Jr. – was no pushover. What emerges in all these books is a Bessette-Kennedy who was fiercely protective of herself, her husband and her inner circle even as she held the public at a remove with her glamorous, disengaged presence.

Photo: Eric Weiss/Penske media via Getty images

In that she evoked another self-possessed child of divorce who grew up not quite as wealthy as those around her – the mother-in-law she never met. It was a bone of contention with Bessette-Kennedy that JFK Jr. never introduced her to his mother, Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, who died on May 19, 1994, the same year they became an exclusive couple, and who would’ve been 95 on July 28. In a sense, JFK. Jr., deeply attached to his mother, married a woman who had a good deal in common with her – including a use of fashion as a kind of public armor that nonetheless piqued curiosity rather than diminish it.

“It’s not a style that calls attention,” Chloé creative director Gabriella Hearst writes in the foreword to “CBK.” “It is a style that tries to deflect attention, and by deflecting that attention, she’s making people pay more attention.”

Would Bessette-Kennedy and Onassis have been friends? Would Bessette-Kennedy’s marriage to JFK Jr. have lasted? Would there have been children? Would he – a man who was said to have been hyper, kind, charismatic, intellectually curious but also trapped in a public image – have run for president? What kind of first lady and woman would Bessette-Kennedy have been in her later years?

We’ll never know. She flies away from us forever – like Jackie or Princess Diana, another vulnerable but steely blueeyed blonde, careening in their dark cars to their destinies. Only to return, because that’s what icons do: They return, transmogrified. And that is perhaps the ultimate irony: The woman once vilified as not being good enough for “America’s prince” has become in the retrospective haze of revisionist history, the woman we loved.

EQUINE ALCHEMY

The Transformative Lens of Shelli Breidenbach

This fall, we introduce you to the stunning work of renowned fine art photographer Shelli Breidenbach, a visionary who has redefined equine photography with her elegant and modern approach. Known for her minimalist elegance, Breidenbach’s work captures the majestic beauty of horses in a way that transcends traditional portraiture, offering a fresh narrative that is both captivating and timeless. Her stunning cheetah image, which graces the cover of this issue, captivated us from the moment we first saw it. Breidenbach seamlessly captures the raw beauty and grace of her subjects.

Breidenbach’s signature style places these noble creatures against dynamic black, white, and vibrant backdrops, creating a striking contrast that highlights their natural elegance.

Shelli’s journey from Wall Street to the world of photography is as inspiring as her work. It all began on a family trip to South Africa, where her love for animals and her passion for photography blossomed. “Africa had a huge impact on me. It made me love wild animals even more, taught me to respect their space and homes, and overall, it made me realize the importance of caring for our environment,” she recalls.

Among her most thrilling experiences was a high-flying

adventure in Casa de Campo, where she captured polo players in action from a helicopter, a feat as daring as it is breathtaking. “Hanging out of a helicopter with no doors was definitely a challenge, but the results were worth it,” she reflects, proving once again that Shelli is anything but conventional.

Breidenbach’s approach to equine photography is uniquely her own, often described as equine minimalism. She captures horses without tack, set against meticulously chosen backdrops that allow their forms and movements to take center stage. “I started by placing a hand-painted burlap behind the horses to eliminate distractions and focus solely on the beauty and athleticism of the horse,” she explains. This technique strips away the extraneous, leaving the viewer to marvel at the raw elegance of the animal.

Despite beginning her career in fashion photography, Shelli’s passion for horses naturally led her towards equine photography. Each click of her camera preserves moments of profound connection between horse and human, reflecting her deep love for these magnificent creatures. Her transition from fashion to equine photography was not just a professional shift but a personal journey driven by her desire to share the beauty of horses with the world.

Breidenbach’s relationship with her equine subjects is at the heart of her work. Though she didn’t delve into competitive equestrian events until adulthood, her passion for horses has always been a guiding force. “As a rider, my true passion led me to spend the majority of my time simply being with horses in the barn. That’s where I felt most connected and where I chose to channel my energy,” she says. This deep connection is evident in every photograph, where the trust between photographer and subject shines through.

Behind the lens, Breidenbach’s process is as detailed as her final images. From the hand-painted backdrops to the positioning of each horse and the interplay of light, every element is carefully considered. “Every shoot involves building a full set with a massive backdrop and extensive equipment. It’s a lot to ask of the animals, so understanding and patience are crucial,” she notes.

Her iconic equine photographs have graced the pages of prestigious equestrian magazines and adorned horse show posters, including the Hampton Classic Horse Show in 2021. As she continues to leave her mark on the world of equestrian photography, Shelli finds peace and inspiration in her own sanctuary.

“I bought a property six years ago and brought my retired horse home. Eventually, I added more animals, including mini ponies, sheep, goats, and even a pig,” she shares. “It’s been fulfilling to grow old with my retired horse and spend time with all the animals daily.”

As we celebrate the artistry of Shelli Breidenbach, we are reminded of the beauty that lies in simplicity, the elegance in minimalism, and the profound connection between horse and human that her work so beautifully captures.

FROM HOLLYWOOD PRODUCER TO BEDSIDE READING:

How One Woman is Transforming Hotel Stays Through Literature

MEET JANE

UBELL-MEYER—A DYNAMIC ENTREPRENEUR WITH A KNACK FOR TURNING CREATIVE IDEAS INTO GROUNDBREAKING BUSINESSES. AFTER A STELLAR CAREER AS A TV AND FILM PRODUCER, JANE MADE A SURPRISING YET INSPIRED LEAP INTO THE WORLD OF BOOK MARKETING. TODAY, AS THE FOUNDER OF BEDSIDE READING, SHE’S RESHAPING THE WAY TRAVELERS EXPERIENCE LUXURY HOTELS BY OFFERING THEM A UNIQUE ESCAPE: A CURATED SELECTION OF BOOKS RIGHT AT THEIR BEDSIDE. IN THIS

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, JANE SHARES THE HEARTFELT INSPIRATION BEHIND HER TRANSITION, THE INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES THAT HAVE DRIVEN HER SUCCESS, AND HER ADVICE FOR ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS EAGER TO TURN THEIR PASSIONS INTO REALITY.

Jane’s journey from Hollywood to book marketing is anything but conventional. It was a deeply personal experience in 2017 that inspired her to take a new path. “I lost one of my dearest friends, Noreen Fraser, to breast cancer. Noreen was an incredible soul—brilliant, passionate, and devoted to her mission of fighting the disease. She was the driving force behind ‘Stand Up to Cancer.’ During her life, we often talked about the afterlife, past lives, and the deeper spiritual side of things,” Jane recalls.

After Noreen’s passing, Jane found herself seeking comfort through conversations with her late friend’s spirit. “I’d ask her what I should do, searching for her wisdom. Funny enough, it was like Noreen’s spirit nudged a memory from my twenties—one I hadn’t thought about in years,” she shares. That memory was of a Caribbean vacation marred by heartbreak. A book she had packed became her solace, transforming a dismal trip into a reflective escape. This moment inspired Jane’s belief in the power of books to comfort and transform experiences—a belief that would later shape the foundation of Bedside Reading.

Jane’s experience in the luxury market significantly influenced the development of Bedside Reading. “I spent two decades as a TV/Film producer and had the opportunity to create something truly special—Madison & Mulholland, an award-winning company. We were pioneers in celebrity gifting lounges and gift bags, working with some of the most prestigious brands in the world. I quickly learned the incredible power of placing the right products into the right hands—whether it’s celebrities or luxury hotel guests. That same ‘word-of-mouth’ magic is exactly what authors need when we introduce their books to travelers in high-end hotels,” she explains.

The pandemic posed significant challenges for many businesses, especially in the hospitality industry. Jane, however, turned adversity into opportunity by expanding Bedside Reading’s reach and offerings. “As a former TV producer for shows like Good Morning America and ET, I’ve learned the importance of adapting quickly. When the pandemic hit, we created something new for readers. We launched a magazine—both print and digital—to introduce authors to hotel guests in the Hamptons, where the hotels remained open and bustling throughout 2020,” Jane says.

With physical books temporarily off the table, she introduced a digital library program using a QR code on a bookmark, offering guests access to an entire digital library of audiobooks, eBooks, meditations, and magazines. Virtual book clubs became a hit among hotels, providing guests with engaging experiences during travel restrictions. “It ended up being a great experience for both the authors and the guests,” she adds.

Jane’s advice for entrepreneurs is simple but profound. “Create something that stands out. Take a moment to see if there’s any competition, and if there is, find a way to make your idea uniquely yours. Stay focused—don’t get distracted by those ‘shiny objects’ that can pull you off course. Trust in your success and take action every day to bring your vision to life. And most importantly, distance yourself from anyone who brings negativity or tries to undermine your dream.”

Bedside Reading has carved out a unique niche in the book marketing space, employing a multi-layered strategy to ensure the success of its authors. “We are the first company in the world to place books in hotel rooms, and we’ve built an innovative 15-layer marketing system to do it. Becoming a bestseller requires both an investment and a solid strategy,”

Jane explains. Her approach includes leveraging strategic partnerships and focusing on daily book promotion to make an author’s name synonymous with their brand. “It’s not always easy—it can be challenging—but also gratifying,” she says.

For Jane, a book cover is more than just a design—it’s a crucial element of a book’s success. “Great book covers truly light up my world. When I see an amazing cover, I feel instantly inspired. But when I come across a poorly designed one, it’s heartbreaking. A book cover sells the book—plain and simple. One of the biggest mistakes authors make is thinking anyone can design a cover based on their idea. Cover design is a craft that takes years to master, and it’s worth every penny to hire a professional,” she advises.

The selection process for Bedside Reading is meticulous. “The books we place in our hotels need to have an eye-catching cover, strong reviews, and meet our specific criteria: no religion, no politics, and no 50 Shades of Grey-style stories. We’re thoughtful about our guests, who come from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds. Our goal is never to offend but to inspire a love for reading,” Jane explains.

As for the future of Bedside Reading, Jane is excited about the company’s international expansion. “We’re thrilled about our plans for international growth! As a digital asset, it’s easier than ever for us to expand into hotels worldwide. This quarter, we’ve launched our program at an exclusive hotel in Cancun, Mexico, and we’re just getting started,” she shares. Additionally, Bedside Reading is extending its digital library to time-share vacation spots, Airbnbs, and co-working spaces.

A NEW force IN FASHION

Photography: Fashion photos: Timothy White, Photos of Dara: Gus Philippas

Hair: Serena Radaelli, Makeup: Marc Cornwall, Styling: Wayne Scot Lukas

By any measure, a 30+ year career as an uber-successful model, representing top fashion and beauty brands like Chloe, L’Oreal, Neutrogena and Pantene, plus shooting an international campaign with the likes of George Clooney, would be enough for anyone to take their foot off the pedal. Not so for model Dara Tomanovich, who checked all those big-goal boxes and many more, yet still harbored a secret dream of someday creating a fashion line.

“I still remember when I was seven, and my mother bought me a pair of purple heels. They were a size too small, but I loved wearing them. It was my first time suffering for fashion!” That experience, plus her mother’s skills as a professional seamstress and her father’s debonair style, made a deep impression on Dara growing up in Toronto. She went onto develop a keen fashion sense, hunting down the best cuts, colors and quality, curating a killer wardrobe of her own.

Fast forward to 2019, when Dara fell head over high heels for a handsome golf fanatic and found herself spending a whole lotta time on the green. What she didn’t find: functional sports clothes that flattered the female physique. Just like that…an idea was born. By 2021, she branded Devon Halsey, the name inspired by one she used to protect her identity during high-profile gigs. By 2022, she finalized her designs for standouts like the Jackie O-inspired cashmere, cotton “JoJo sweater,” a “Lexi Sweater Puffer” with a deliciously form-fitting silhouette, and a to-die for “Driver Jacket” that morphs into a waterproof vest, bolero and crossbody bag. By 2023, those looks and more made a splash on-line and in golf-pro boutiques around the country.

What did Dara learn from her first foray into fashion?

“I can grow the brand to include golf-inspired clothes that extend to dressing for tennis, pickleball and more aspects of a fashionable woman’s active and diverse life.”

Which brings us to Devon Halsey’s Fall, 2024 collection, featuring fresh looks destined to become must-haves for women craving a functional-meets-fabulous style. Get ready for… a super-cute “Skilt” (Dara’s fun wordmash up of skirt and kilt!)… a glam tennis dress called “The Taylor” (as in Miss Swift, who Dara thinks would look on-point wearing it!)… a Gucci-inspired, breezy bubble-skirt, a snatching full-body trainer and more, all in an array of colors from “Beaujolais” to “Blu” to an alluring “Jade” to “Vapor Grey” and beyond. Spend time in the Devon Halsey showroom and Dara’s enthusiasm is contagious. While vamping and showcasing the wow-factor of each outfit, she says, “I want to empower women of all sizes to feel confident and stylish by offering premium quality, fashion-forward apparel. Put more simply, I want any woman wearing my clothes to look damn good!”

If the growing buzz around Devon Halsey is any indication, that’s another big-goal box Dara can soon check. In the meantime, she’s unafraid to pound the pavement…or putting green…or tennis or pickleball court. She’s hosted trunk shows from the Hamptons to Palm Beach, and last summer, set up shop at the PGA in Frisco, Texas. While big brands, like Lululemon, were M.I.A., there was Devon Halsey and its tireless creator, Dara Tomanovich, flashing her million-dollar smile and spreading the word, making her fashion dream—and the dreams of countless women who’ve longed for such elegant and sporty designs—come true.

MAXIMAL IMPACT The Divine Vision of Hutton Wilkinson

“If it’s not fabulous it’s meaningless!”
-Hutton Wilkinson

Both fabulous and meaningful are the homes in Paris, New York and California, a palazzo in Venice, a palace in Saudi Arabia and a Bangkok hotel that are just a few of the design projects that dot designer and tastemaker Hutton Wilkinson’s remarkable resume. As the Owner, Creative Director and President of design firm Tony Duquette Inc, Wilkinson has, for over fifty years, carried on the legacy of lavish and grand glamor, even when popular culture shifted interior paradigms towards minimalism, mid-century and Shabby Chic.

“I’m searching for inner peace through materialism,” laughs Wilkinson and one is unsure if he is being serious or silly. Very quickly you determine that he is both. A perennial quick wit and a lover of all things luxe.

Hutton Wilkinson was born in Los Angeles, California and

practically grew up in the architectural offices of his father and grandfather. At eighteen, he had the opportunity to apprentice under the renowned American designer Tony Duquette, known for his opulent interior decoration of iconic Hollywood homes. After working for Duquette as a volunteer apprentice for two years and then three more as a paid assistant designer, Wilkinson opened his own successful interior design firm while still collaborating frequently with Duquette for the next twenty-five years as they shared an overall aesthetic philosophy. “My motto to live by was Tony Duquette’s favorite expression ‘more is more’”, exclaims Wilkinson. “I’ve also been known to preach that, “I pray every night that people with taste get money and people with money get taste.” Wilkinson pauses before delivering his punchline, “My prayer was answered, and the answer was ‘no’!”

Looking from Hutton’s dressing room towards his bathroom and closet areas which are decorated using vintage advertising posters for dior, eau sauvage. The caricatures on the left depict Hutton’s grandfather, Jose Luis Tejada-sorzano, Count of Alastay, drawn and painted when Don Jose Luis was president of Bolivia between 1934 and 1936. The tiger capet was purchassed by Wilkinson while on a trip to Kathmandu, Nepal.

While sourcing one-of-a-kind antiques and creating custom designed furniture ensure that no two spaces are the same, the color green is prevalent in many of Wilkinson’s projects. “Tony Duquette taught me that green was a neutral color and it just happens to be (along with coral) my favorite hue in a strong malachite or emerald shade. Green envelops a room and creates the perfect background for patterns or gilded highlights, it is cool, soothing and solid.” As for white walls, Wilkinson subscribes to the theory that the fewer there are the better. “Never say never but... beige or an all-white room is the sure sign that I had nothing to do with its conception” affirms Wilkinson, who orchestrates a symphony of color and pattern in per-

fect proportion and harmony. He favors almost anything chinoiserie or trellis pattern involving some kind of border. One of his latest design collaborations is a hand painted mural collection with Paul Montgomery inspired by exotic destinations seen in old Hollywood films. “I like wallpaper and where it’s called for, I use it liberally, the more the merrier across walls and ceilings, around moldings and furniture, inside of drawers and closets, if you’re going to wallpaper, do it all and make a statement.

Dawnridge, the legendary Beverly Hills home of designer Tony Duquette has been where Wilkinson and his wife Ruth call home since 1999 when they purchased and refurbished the extraordinary

house and gardens, continuing to use it as the headquarters for the design organization. Now comprised of four different structures, Wilkinson’s favorite spots are the big room and green room at Tony’s house or his wife’s dressing room at Casa la Condesa. Ever in favor of sharing the splendor, Dawnridge is often used for editorial photo shoots and is available to rent for private events

Recently, Wilkinson decided to join the many fleeing LA for another sunshine state, Florida, where so many of his clients and friends already spend winters. He has put the finishing touches on his new residence on storied Singer Island. Apartment overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in a style which he describes depreciatingly as “drunk and disorderly”. The aesthetic was created using a collection of mismatched hand blocked India prints with their borders cut off and later applied around moldings, baseboards and ceilings to fashion the backgrounds that embrace the rooms. Antique carpets from China, Morocco and India along with Nepalese woven animal prints lay the foundation below. The upholstered furniture is comfortable and the armchairs for the most part are antiques. To maximizing leisure time at home, Wilkinson knocked down the walls on the first floor to create a fluid living

Looking towards the stair hall from the master bedroom, the carved blackwood screen on the left is inlaid with miniature paintings of maharajas under glass. The wall between the screen and the entrance to the stair hall is hung with paintings by Elizabeth Duquette. The hanging tassel to the right of the stair hall is one of a pair created by Wilkinson using antique brass fish and gold leafed resin tassells, against an antique Japanese obi fragments. A pair of carved brackets have been hung top and bottom (one of them upside down to resemble a pagoda roof. The Louis XVI style armchair is upholstered in hand blocked India printed cotton.

space with two alcoves nestled off the living room serving as a television room on one side and a library on the other. He purchased another apartment directly above, connecting them with a circular staircase that spirals up to the master bedroom, boasting his and hers en-suite dressing rooms and bathrooms for himself and his wife Ruth. Originally Palm Beach Island was a very large island and at sometime early on a yacht cut through the middle of it creating two islands; Palm Beach Island, which was developed by railroad tycoon Henry Morrison Flagler and Singer Island, which was developed by Singer, sewing machine heir, Paris Singer. When Singer saw the beach on his island paradise, he wrote a letter to his girlfriend Isadora Duncan and told her, “I have found the most beautiful beach in the world, and it is on Singer Island!” “In my opinion Singer Island is the better piece of real estate,” Wilkinson says thoughtfully, “the lots are all four acres to the ocean with only one street along the inland waterway… This is where the big estates should have been built!” Instead, it’s all hi-rise condos and his building “Sea Dunes” which is only eight stories tall with twenty-eight owners was the first high-rise built on Singer Island in 1960.

Always one to embrace new ideas and creative challenges, Wilkinson continues to produce signature capsule collections in partnerships with some of the most highly esteemed creators in interior design such as Remains lighting, Jim Thompson, Maitland Smith, Patterson Flynn Martin and Mottahedeh. He finds inspiration through books and travel citing India, South America, Southeast Asia and China to be some of his top visual ports of call.

Circling the globe truly fuels all of Wilkinson’s diverse passions. He is the author of over a dozen books, including four best sellers, and the designer of Tony Duquette Fine Jewelry, a coveted bespoke one-of-a-kind collection seen on runways for designers such as Tom Ford, Gucci, Oscar de la Renta and Balmain as well as waking red carpets on the likes of Sharon Stone, Faye Dunaway, Liza Minnelli, Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon. He likens his jewels to children. “After I send them out in the world it is always a joy to see them again. My jewelry is collected all over the world so in the rare chance I walk into a room and spy a beautiful lady wearing a treasured piece, it is like seeing my children again” he explains. Wilkinson dreams of the opportunity to work his 18K gold bijoux magic on some large and extraordinary precious stones. As for decorating, he is going into business in Palm Beach with Lee Robinson, a talented interior designer from Louisville Kentucky. Wilkinson is currently designing a house for clients in Wellington Florida as well as a duplex apartment in New York City and a house on Palm Beach Island with a grand apartment in Paris and homes in Los Angeles already on the schedule for the new year. The preeminent designer has no plans to slow down and hopes to continue to be enthusiastically open to everything the universe presents to him. “If I ever write my biography,” he pauses and smiles, “I think the title will be Once Was Enough’.”

Hutton's dressing room off of the master bedroom. The bookcase holds his clothes in cabinets under the bookcase. The walls and club chairs are upholstered in hand blocked Indian cotton. The cocktail table is an antique Chinese lac burgaute chest on stan from the collection of tony duquette. The giant gorilla heads with their crowns filled with seashells and coral were a housewarming gift from one of Wilkinsons cuban admirers. The ceiling which Wilkinson refers to as the fifth wall in the room is decorated with an Indian painting from the royal art school in Udaipur and framed with silk tassells and decorative fringe from Italy.

A TUSCAN HARVEST

AS THE CRISP AUTUMN AIR ENVELOPS THE ROLLING HILLS OF TUSCANY, THE LANDSCAPE TRANSFORMS INTO A TAPESTRY OF WARM HUES— GOLDEN VINES STRETCH ACROSS THE HORIZON, INVITING WINE LOVERS TO EXPLORE THE HEART OF ITALY’S RENOWNED WINE COUNTRY. NOVEMBER IS A MAGICAL TIME TO VISIT, AS THE GRAPE HARVEST DRAWS TO A CLOSE, OFFERING A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVOR EXQUISITE WINES, LUXURIOUS VILLAS, AND THE CULINARY DELIGHTS THAT DEFINE THIS ENCHANTING REGION.

In fall, Tuscany’s vineyards are alive with the last whispers of the harvest season. The warm sunlight filters through the leaves, casting a golden glow on the grapes that have been meticulously cultivated throughout the year. Visiting renowned wineries like Castello di Ama and Antinori, I had the pleasure of tasting the region’s finest offerings.

The Chianti Classico, with its vibrant cherry notes and hints of leather, provided a perfect introduction to Tuscany’s rich viticulture. Each sip transported me to the sun-drenched hills where Sangiovese grapes flourish. The Brunello di Montalcino, a luxurious full-bodied wine, left a lasting impression with its deep, complex flavors of dark fruit and earthy undertones. These wines not only reflect the unique terroir but also the passion of the winemakers who pour their hearts into every bottle.

After days of exploring vineyards, I found solace in the elegant surroundings of Villa La Massa. Nestled along the Arno River, this luxurious estate boasts stunning views of the Tuscan countryside. The villa’s rich history is woven into its architecture, offering guests an authentic taste of Tuscan grandeur.

Each morning began with a sumptuous breakfast featuring locally sourced ingredients, followed by afternoons spent lounging by the pool or strolling through the beautifully manicured gardens. For those seeking a more immersive experience, cooking classes with local chefs offered insights into the culinary traditions of Tuscany, pairing perfectly with the region’s outstanding wines.

Tuscany’s culinary scene is a celebration of flavors and traditions. At charming trattorias and upscale restaurants, I indulged in dishes that captured the essence of the region. Ribollita, a hearty Tuscan soup, warmed my soul, while pici cacio e pepe showcased the beauty of simple, quality ingredients.

Dining at Osteria Vini e Vecchi Sapori was a highlight, where the chef crafted dishes that honored local recipes while incorporating contemporary flair. Each meal was perfectly paired with the exquisite wines I had come to adore, creating a harmonious balance of taste and experience.

Beyond the vineyards and culinary delights, Tuscany is rich in culture and history. A visit to the medieval town of San Gimignano revealed its iconic towers and charming streets, each corner telling a story of the past. Siena, with its stunning Gothic architecture and vibrant Piazza del Campo, offered a glimpse into the region’s artistic heritage.

In fall, local festivals celebrate the bounty of the harvest, with opportunities to mingle with locals and sample seasonal delicacies. These experiences added layers of authenticity to my journey, making Tuscany feel like a second home.

As I bid farewell to Tuscany, I carried with me memories of breathtaking landscapes, world-class wines, and culinary treasures. This region, steeped in history and tradition, left an indelible mark on my heart. For anyone yearning for

an escape that blends beauty with authentic experiences, Tuscany in the fall is a destination that promises enchantment and discovery.

Whether you’re savoring a glass of Brunello under the Tuscan sun or indulging in a feast of local cuisine, the beauty of this region lies not just in its vineyards but in the connections it fosters—between people, culture, and the land. Plan your own adventure, and let Tuscany weave its magic into your life.

For a truly chic and luxurious stay in Tuscany, consider Villa Cora in Florence. This exquisite villa, set in a historic 19th-century building, offers a blend of opulence and elegance, complete with beautiful gardens, a stunning pool, and breathtaking views of the city.

Another fabulous option is Castello di Casole, a restored castle that exudes charm and sophistication. With its sprawling estate, infinity pool, and farm-to-table dining experiences, it’s an ideal retreat for those seeking a unique and chic Tuscan experience.

A GATEWAY TO SOUTHERN ELEGANCE

When it comes to blending luxury with history, few places do it as effortlessly as Charleston Place.

Charleston Place is more than just a hotel—it’s an immersion into the charm and sophistication that define the city.

Positioned on Meeting Street, Charleston Place is within walking distance of the city’s most cherished landmarks, from the Charleston City Market to the pastel-painted homes of Rainbow Row. It serves as the perfect launching pad for exploring the cobblestone streets and centuries-old architecture that make Charleston one of the most beloved cities in America.

Staying on the Club Level at Charleston Place elevates the experience even further. Accessible by private keycard, the Club Level offers an intimate, personalized escape from the bustle of the city below. From the moment I stepped off the elevator, I was greeted by attentive staff ready to assist with any need, whether it was dining reservations, activity planning, or simply offering a glass of chilled champagne.

The Club Lounge itself is a haven of quiet elegance, offering guests complimentary all-day refreshments, including breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening hors

d'oeuvres. Sipping a morning coffee while overlooking the rooftops of Charleston from the lounge’s balcony became a favorite ritual. The staff exudes genuine Southern hospitality, making you feel less like a guest and more like a VIP in your own private residence.

On my first night, I chose to ease into my stay with a visit to the Thoroughbred Club, Charleston Place’s intimate, yet sophisticated lounge. Located just off the grand lobby, the Thoroughbred Club offers a warm ambiance reminiscent of the city’s aristocratic roots. Decorated with rich wood, leather seating, and equestrian-themed art, the space evokes Charleston’s love affair with horse racing.

I settled in with one of their signature cocktails, an artfully crafted Southern classic that paired perfectly with live jazz music filling the air. The Thoroughbred Club offers a menu of light bites, so I enjoyed a few small plates—perfectly seared scallops and a charcuterie board brimming with local cheeses and meats. The ambiance, paired with impeccable service, made it an ideal way to begin my Charleston experience.

The following morning, I set out to explore the city, energized from the Club Level’s breakfast spread of freshly baked croissants, fresh fruit, and locally sourced Lowcountry favorites like shrimp and grits. Charleston’s charm lies not only in its architecture but also in its walkability, and staying at Charleston Place means you’re within steps of many of its most famous landmarks.

My first stop was the Charleston City Market, one of the nation’s oldest public markets, where local artisans sell everything from sweetgrass baskets to handmade jewelry. Just a short stroll away was Rainbow Row, a collection of 18th-century homes painted in vibrant pastel hues, each one telling its own story from Charleston’s storied past. I wandered through The Battery, lined with historic mansions, while gazing out at Fort Sumter in the distance, imagining the city during its heyday in the Civil War era.

Charleston’s streets are alive with history, and every corner holds a new story. Whether you’re admiring the colonial-era churches, snapping photos of hidden gardens, or enjoying a leisurely carriage ride, the city invites you to slow down and absorb its rich past at every turn.

The pièces de résistance dinner that evening was at Charleston Grill, the hotel’s renowned signature restaurant. A Charleston classic, the refined, award-winning Charleston Grill is renowned for its unparalleled dining experience and warm hospitality. Helmed by Chef de Cuisine Suzy Castelloe, who was mentored by legendary chef Michelle Weaver, the Charleston Grill offers a menu that draws deeply from the flavors and traditions of the South. The seasonal menu highlights locally sourced ingredients from purveyors across the Lowcountry, delivering dishes that are both innovative and rooted in regional history.

The evening began with an indulgent appetizer of truffle caviar, an elegant and surprising start. The rich, earthy notes of the truffles combined with the delicate saltiness of the caviar created an extraordinary harmony of flavors—luxury on a plate. Paired with a glass of vintage champagne, it was a sensory experience that set the stage for what would be a memorable meal.

For my main course, I chose the Colorado Lamb Loin, a dish as refined as it was hearty. The lamb was cooked to perfection, tender and succulent, with a delicate crust that gave way to its perfectly pink center. Served alongside seasonal vegetables and a rich, flavorful reduction, each bite was a testament to Chef Castelloe’s mastery of blending modern techniques with classic Southern flavors. The depth of the lamb’s natural flavors was enhanced by subtle spices and herbs, making it the kind of dish that lingers in your memory long after the meal is over.

Charleston Place’s history is as intertwined with the city’s renaissance as the landmarks that surround it. Opened in 1986 as part of the revitalization of downtown Charleston, the hotel was envisioned as a grand tribute to Charleston’s architectural and cultural heritage. Its designers meticulously crafted its classic exterior to blend seamlessly with the historic district, paying homage to Charleston’s golden era. Today, the hotel is a cornerstone of the city’s luxury travel scene, offering guests a seamless blend of past and present.

Charleston Place is more than just a luxurious place to rest your head—it’s an experience that captures the essence of Charleston itself. From the exclusive Club Level to the historic streets just steps outside the door, every moment is steeped in comfort and culture.

Elastika Where Culinary Excellence Meets

Artistic

Expression in the Heart of the Miami Design District

After you hand your car off to the valet, you will find the entrance to Elastika quietly hidden next to Thom Browne, a few stores down from Tiffany & Co. On entry, you are massaged with waves of sophistication in the form of highly detailed interior design in every direction you look. The hostesses engage with kind banter and refined beauty, floating you to your table. The calming shades of brown, white, and muted green, arranged with high order, keep you busy as you sit in the back corner booth. Looking up, you are further inspired by a four-story-tall, pure white sculpture of organic influence connecting multiple stories like neurons. Designed by the famed Zaha Hadid Architecture firm, this sculpture, named Elastika, is the namesake artistic centerpiece of the restaurant.

Photos

Dinner begins with a selection of champagne curated by Head Sommelier Raymond Brown, chosen from a small batch producer in Champagne, France. Brown’s passion for exclusivity and detail is evident, with each pour reflecting his pursuit of the highest standards. This dedication is a core value of the sommelier team at Elastika.

The meal starts with an amusebouche from Executive Chef Joe Anthony: a refreshing edible margarita with pineapple and citrus gelatin, signaling a departure from the ordinary. The first course started with aged kingfish crudo, green tomato carpaccio, and gazpacho, adorned with an extremely delicious bread sourced through a many-year relationship that Chef Joe Anthony has with the Amish in Pennsylvania. We had never tasted bread quite like this. Strangely enough, the peak quality of something as simple as bread had our attention the most. The grain that this bread is made from is milled at the exact time the order is placed, making it one of the most nutrient-dense breads, teeming with much more life than your traditional bread. The kitchen has to take special care to maintain this quality for its guests.

Chef Anthony’s philosophy of combining culinary excellence with nutritional density is a guiding principle throughout the menu. Each dish, such as eggplant and sheep’s milk ravioli serviettes, grass-fed bison tartare, and eggplant ratatouille sourced from local farms, reflects this commitment. The main course features spiceseared diver scallops, miso-marinated grilled bavette steak, and a salad of local lettuces with shaved jicama, broccoli rabe, and toasted cashew vinaigrette. The scallops, in particular, are a standout, achieving what can only be described as culinary perfection.

For dessert, options include chocolate and buckwheat, an intricate creation with rosemary meringue walls and buckwheat ice cream, and a tropical sundae with mango passion fruit ice cream and spiced ganache. Paired with a carefully selected dessert wine, these treats elevate the dining experience to new heights.

The evening concludes with Jasmine Pearl tea, a high-end selection that perfectly complements the refined dining experience. What sets Elastika apart is the evident joy and cohesion among the staff, who create a welcoming atmosphere that adds to the restaurant's charm. This unique blend of exquisite cuisine, artistic expression, and genuine hospitality places Elastika among the top fine dining experiences on the East Coast.

We had the opportunity to speak with Executive Chef Joe Anthony;

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE CULINARY WORLD AND HOW YOU CAME TO BE THE EXECUTIVE CHEF AT ELASTIKA?

I’m a Florida native from Delray Beach and graduated from the Florida Culinary Institute in 2003. My career began in South Florida’s top kitchens before I moved to New York City in 2009 to refine my craft at Restaurant Daniel, Union Square Cafe, and The Modern. I built a lasting relationship with Michelin Chef Gabriel Kreuther, helping to open his two-starred restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, where I became the culinary director. Under my leadership, we achieved accolades such as Relais & Chateaux, Les Grande Tables du Monde, and the AAA Five Diamond awards. I was also a finalist in the Art of Plating in 2019. I constantly refine my skills and maintain an open mind for evolution. With a functional nutrition certification, I operate under the notion that "you are what you eat" and prefer to cook with nutritional ingredients. My mission is to influence how diners perceive healthy eating and shift the environmental impacts of food distribution.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CONCEPT AND PHILOSOPHY BEHIND ELASTIKA'S

MENU?

We believe good-tasting food should also be good for you. We apply local and sustainably sourced ingredients that are prepared in a conscious manner and are also in line with our ethos of nourishing food.

WHAT INSPIRED THE NAME "ELASTIKA" FOR THE RESTAURANT?

The restaurant is named after the iconic Zaha Hadid sculpture, Elastika, which is suspended throughout the four-story atrium above the restaurant’s dining room. The sculpture is a site-specific installation commissioned by Miami Design District developer Craig Robins for the inaugural Design Miami/ exhibition in 2005.

HOW

DO YOU INCORPORATE MIAMI'S INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCES INTO THE DISHES AT ELASTIKA?

We consider ourselves globally eclectic, meaning we take influences, not just from Miami, but around the world. We didn’t want to box ourselves into any particular categories of food, as we believe inspiration can come from anywhere- such as an ingredient, technique, family tradition, etc. We like it to feel organic and thoughtful in our process so it’s constantly changing.

WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO SOURCING INGREDIENTS LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY FOR THE RESTAURANT?

You can’t talk about the health of people without talking about the health of where your ingredients are coming from. You are what you eat. We support both local and global craftsmen and purveyors who align with the same ideology as us.

HOW DO YOU STAY INSPIRED AND CONTINUE TO INNOVATE IN YOUR CULINARY CREATIONS?

I like to read a lot of books, not just cookbooks, but books that inspire me to think of a different perspective and try to be the best version of myself. I feel like you have to take care of both your body and mind if you want to perform and grow. When I take care of all those things as a whole it translates to my food

LASTLY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING CHEFS WHO ARE LOOKING TO MAKE THEIR MARK IN THE CULINARY INDUSTRY?

As a young cook, you should find an amazing kitchen to work in from a talented chef you want to work for. Keep your head down, work relentlessly, and be a constant sponge. You will grow, evolve, and add more tools to your toolbox. You will have some hard and challenging days that in the end will only make you better if you choose to be. From there, find your own path, make sure to be genuine about what you believe in, and create your own niche.

A CHEF’S CHRISTMAS

1 CHEF HEATHER KING

Executive chef at SouthPark’s Steak 48, in Charlotte NC one of Charlotte’s most sought-after reservations

As a chef, Christmas is at the end of a really busy season so we like to keep it simple but love some of our traditions. On Christmas Eve in my family, every year we have oyster stew and champagne after I get home from work.

On Christmas Day, we get together with immediate family and keep it small and quaint. It starts with opening my stocking and every year I still get a navel orange, one tangerine two walnuts and a candy cane. It isn’t Christmas without it! My favorite part is watching Home Alone on TBS.

As for cooking, we like mixing up the protein each year – some years we have prime rib, other years we do lobster and another year we do Tomahawk Ribeyes. Since it’s such a hectic holiday, I tend to keep sides really easy just to have a chill day: mashed or baked potatoes, asparagus, yeast rolls and dessert.

SIMPLE TIP:

Salt and pepper is your friend. Don’t overthink it, but many amateur home cooks don’t season enough. A few people overseason which is equally bad. If you use Himalayan Pink Salt (or Kosher salt) it’s pretty hard to over-season. Stay away from iodized salt because you can definitely oversalt with that.

Christmas for me and my family does not typically center around the sit-down meal although preparing it has been my favorite part for the last several years. Spending time together, not stuck in the kitchen for hours, is the most important. Food is the best way for me to show my love of family and get to add a memorable touch to our holidays every year. Our family always does some sort of roast for Christmas. Typically beef but sometimes pork or chicken as well.

HOLIDAY RIB ROAST

Create a highly seasoned rub or marinade for the beef. I like lots of garlic, herbs, and even some horseradish. This is usually a large piece of meat so give plenty of time for the flavors to sink in and make sure you let the meat come to room temperature for an hour or so before starting your cook time.

HOLIDAY ACCOMPANIMENTS

VEGETABLES:

Roasted Cabbage with Garlic chili and parmesan (pictured) Charred cabbage is a great vegetable to add to any holiday meal. Cut the cabbage into wedges, I like to leave a small amount of the core intact to help keep the leaves together while cooking and serving, season the cabbage with a little chili flake, salt and pepper, and freshly grated parmesan. Roast in a hot oven until tender and nicely caramelized and the cheese is golden and crispy. To finish, drizzle with your favorite garlic chili crisp (either store-bought or homemade) and grate some more fresh parmesan over the top.

TIP:

Plan ahead and make a schedule to ensure you have plenty of time for family in between tasks in the kitchen. Also making a schedule for your oven times and temperatures needed will help with multitasking while in the kitchen.

My favorite Christmas meal is Peppercorn Crusted Chateaubriand, Fig Mostarda, Roasted Brussels Sprouts, glazed with Pomegranate Molasses and finished with Parmigiano Reggiano. Chateaubriand is always my choice during the Holidays. Deliciously soft, juicy and flavorsome. It’s not only easy to prepare but also incredibly versatile to pair with any flavors from sweet to savory or even spicy. I like to use some sharp, acidic flavor to level the richness and elevate the Chateaubriand. For the brussels sprouts, we hard roast them and toss them in a bowl with pomegranate molasses and Maldon salt, grate fresh parmesan cheese on top, and garnish with some pomegranate seeds.

TIP:

I use a simple rule on large cuts of meat -- “sear fast and hot, then slow roast.” The main reason is to get a nice even brown color when searing, the more color, the more flavor! Then allow the cut to go into the oven and slowly bring up the temperature. Usually, I take the chateaubriand out when it is 5°F below the desired doneness. Finally, always....always allow 15-20 minutes resting before slicing and serving.

DR. SHANTÉ WILLIAMS MAKES HISTORY AT OPERA CAROLINA

Dr. Shanté Williams steps into the spotlight as Opera Carolina’s new General Director, making history as the first woman and first person of color to lead the company since its founding in 1948. A trailblazing businesswoman, venture capitalist, and CEO of Black Pearl Global Investments, Williams brings a powerful blend of financial expertise, leadership, and a deep passion for the arts to one of North Carolina’s most prestigious cultural institutions.

“Opera Carolina’s 75-year legacy of excellence in opera, education, and community impact is extraordinary, and I’m honored to carry it forward,” says Williams, who previously served on the organization’s board of directors. “With a talented team and dynamic board, we’ll expand Opera Carolina’s role in Charlotte’s vibrant arts community and continue to inspire, heal, and uplift through the power of opera.”

Williams takes over from James Meena, who has served as both General Director and Principal Conductor and will now focus solely on his role as Artistic Director. Her appointment comes after a carefully planned succession process by the board of directors, designed to bring fresh energy and leadership to the organization as it prepares for its milestone 75th season.

The board, led by Chair Carol Kendrick, is enthusiastic about Williams’ new role, citing her impressive credentials and deep connection to the community. “Dr. Williams brings an incredible track record of success in both business and fundraising,” says Kendrick. “Her leadership is exactly what Opera Carolina needs and aims to elevate our company to new heights of artistic and operational excellence.”

Williams is widely celebrated for her innovative approach to business and investment, and her influence has already been felt at Opera Carolina. She was instrumental in securing opera star Denyce Graves for the title role in the company’s recent production of The Passion of Mary Cardwell Dawson, a move that garnered widespread acclaim. Graves herself praises Williams, calling her “a visionary leader whose determination and commitment to excellence will propel Opera Carolina into an exciting future.”

Opera Carolina’s 75th season launched on October 30 with a highly anticipated benefit concert featuring the legendary Andrea Bocelli. For more information about the upcoming season and events, visit operacarolina.org/75years.

THE HAMPTONS

PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE

The Greenwich psychic and spiritual worker, renowned for her celebrity and Wall Street clientele in Manhattan, shares the story behind her divine gifting. Unlike most vocations that require the honing of new skills, Janet Lee’s foray into the world of psychic and spiritual work was incredibly innate.

“I am a born-gifted psychic with an Indian background,” Lee says. “My entire family has the ability to look into a person’s past, present, and future and help them shed light on troubling issues in their life. My grandmother was a hands-on healer, my mother was a born-gifted psychic with vision, and I have the divine ability of both gifts.”

This dual-ability, Lee says, is very unique in the industry. It’s arguably what brought her from northern Connecticut to Greenwich decades ago—a charming area she has now called home for nearly 25 years.

“I was approached by Saks Fifth Avenue to do a promotion,” Lee says. “They asked me to come in and do psychic readings for any $100 purchase at the Lancôme counter, so I came across to Greenwich.”

On the morning of the promotion, the line zig-zagged and Lee was booked with readings for most of the day.

“The second request I got from Saks Fifth Avenue was to return and work for Chanel, doing readings for each $500 purchase,” Lee says. “Once again, the line wrapped around the corner of the store. In the third conversation I had with Saks Fifth Avenue they said, ‘Janet, can you please be our VIP psychic for the store?’”

From that moment forward, the “Greenwich Psychic” was born. Lee worked at Saks Fifth Avenue every weekend, prompting her to eventually open her own shop on Greenwich Avenue where she could specialize in psychic and spiritual work.

Since then, Lee’s psychic work has expanded to include a luxurious office suite in Manhattan where she conducts most of her readings for her Wall Street clients. Both of her office spaces blend luxury with comfort and feature a home-like atmosphere.

“In a typical reading, people will come in, sit down, and I will do most of the talking,” Lee says. “The reading starts by going through a person’s past, present, and future. Most of the time, the reading concentrates on the mind and heart, what’s going on in the present, and healing any broken parts.”

Confidentiality is highly important to Lee, who has a list of high-profile clients she guards carefully. No matter the client or the unique struggles they bring to Lee, the psychic finds deep fulfillment in her calling.

“When they enter, clients are broken and hopeless,” Lee says. “After working with me, we’ve picked up all of the pieces and put them together again. Clients always leave feeling whole and happy.”

STEP INTO THE PAST AND RELIVE THE PRESENT:

Discover the Evolution of The Palm Beaches at ‘Wish You Were Here’

In a world where travel destinations constantly vie for attention, The Palm Beaches stand apart with a legacy that spans over 150 years. This November, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County invites you to embark on a captivating journey through time with the ‘Wish You Were Here: The Evolution of Tourism in The Palm Beaches’ exhibit—a tribute to America's original luxury resort destination.

A CENTURY OF LUXURY AND LEISURE

Since its discovery in 1875 as a serene, untouched haven, The Palm Beaches has drawn those in search of luxury, relaxation, and recreation. From the golden age of travel to the diverse attractions of today, this region has been a pioneer in redefining leisure, catering to the evolving tastes of discerning travelers.

The ‘Wish You Were Here’ exhibit elegantly showcases this transformation, highlighting the area's unmatched ability to reinvent itself while preserving its rich heritage.

Located at the Palm Beach County History Museum, the exhibit offers an immersive and sensory experience. Visitors can explore rare artifacts and personal stories from The Palm Beaches’ storied past, enriched by interactive features that bring history to life.

Imagine stepping into a 140-year-old diary with the help of modern technology, feeling the rhythm of the iconic jazz that once filled the halls of the legendary Sunset Lounge, and viewing never-before-seen works by the celebrated Highwaymen. These elements paint a vivid portrait of the destination’s cultural and social evolution.

But the journey doesn’t stop there. The exhibit also delves into The Palm Beaches’ vibrant sports legacy, from baseball’s early days to the elegance of polo, tennis, and golf. Through memorabilia and personal effects from sports icons, visitors gain insight into how these pastimes helped shape the region’s allure as a world-class destination.

Adding a contemporary flair to the exhibition is artist-in-residence Kyle Lucks, whose work captures the energy and emotion of some of the world’s most iconic athletes and performers. A prodigy from a family of creatives, Lucks first made his mark at age 12, when his art was featured in Sports Illustrated. His bold, large-scale portraits now grace stadiums, restaurants, and private collections across the globe.

With a passion for blending sports and visual art, Lucks brings a dynamic element to the ‘Wish You Were Here’ exhibit, offering visitors a fresh perspective on the intersection of culture, creativity, and athleticism.

The ‘Wish You Were Here’ exhibit opens November 15, 2024, and runs through June 28, 2025, at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum. Admission is $12 for non-member adults and free for visitors 18 and under, as well as HSPBC members.

Conveniently located on the second floor of the beautifully restored 1916 Courthouse at 300 North Dixie Highway, the museum is just steps from other West Palm Beach attractions, making it the perfect stop on any itinerary.

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the past, all while celebrating the ever-evolving legacy of The Palm Beaches, a destination that continues to define luxury and charm.

MIAMI SANT AMBROEUS MIAMI

Sant Ambroeus, the famed Italian restaurant and coffee bar, is set to make its Miami debut at the Fifth Miami Beach in late 2025. Known for its modern take on Milanese cuisine, the restaurant will span over 7,000 square feet at the base of a new Class A+ office tower in the South of Fifth neighborhood.

Founded in Milan in 1936, Sant Ambroeus has since expanded to several prestigious U.S. locations, including New York City, Southampton, East Hampton, Palm Beach, and Aspen. Signature dishes like Linguine alle Vongole, Eggplant Parmigiana, and Tagliatelle Bolognese have earned it a loyal following, as has its beloved Cioccolata Calda, a rich semi-sweet hot chocolate. Celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Demi Moore, Billy Joel, Larry David, and Timothée Chalamet have all been spotted dining at the restaurant.

The Miami location will be designed by Giampiero Tagliaferri, known for his work with Oliver Peoples, Brunello Cucinelli, and Minotti. His vision will shape the 7,000-square-foot space within the Fifth Miami Beach, a cutting-edge commercial building—the first of its kind in 22 years in the South of Fifth area. Developed by Sumaida + Khurana and Bizzi + Bilgili, the building will feature architecture by Alberto Campo Baeza and interiors by Gabellini Sheppard Associates, highlighting nature-inspired elements, 14-foot ceilings, wraparound terraces, a marble lobby, and a rooftop with sweeping ocean views.

EATALY SET TO BRING THE TASTE OF ITALY TO MIAMI

Italian food hall Eataly is headed to Aventura Mall in South Florida.

Miami is about to get a major taste of Italy, as the renowned Eataly food hall and market is slated to open its doors in Aventura Mall next year. Tommaso Brusò, the CEO for Eataly North America, shared the exciting news, stating, “Eataly is a place to indulge and experience the essence of Italy without ever leaving Miami.” Located above the Louis Vuitton store in the Nordstrom wing, the 30,000-square-foot space aims to transport visitors to Italy through food, ambiance, and culture.

Founded by Oscar Farinetti in 2007 in Torino, Italy, Eataly was conceived as a unique gathering place where patrons could dine on authentic Italian cuisine, learn about the country’s rich food heritage, and purchase the ingredients needed to recreate those dishes at home. From its humble beginnings in a repurposed vermouth factory, Eataly has expanded into a global sensation with over 50 locations worldwide, including New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas.

Brusò, with his extensive background in the fashion industry, explained that Aventura was chosen as Eataly's next destination because of its vibrant, upscale community and its role as a central hub for both locals and tourists. Eataly Aventura, projected to open in spring 2025, will feature multiple vendors offering everything from grab-and-go Italian classics like paninis and gelato, to sit-down dining experiences. Visitors will also be able to shop for gourmet groceries, including fresh pasta, olive oils, artisanal cheeses, and an impressive selection of Italian wines.

In keeping with Eataly’s mission to blend education with culinary exploration, customers will have the chance to watch pasta being made by hand and learn the techniques behind traditional Italian cooking. Brusò emphasized that Eataly is more than just a food market. “We’re not competing with local restaurants or grocery stores. We’re a destination in and of itself—bringing the Italian lifestyle and experience directly to our guests.”

As Eataly continues its rapid expansion across North America, with upcoming locations in Toronto and New Jersey, Miami is poised to be the next hotspot for Italian cuisine lovers. Brusò’s vision? To double the brand’s presence in the coming years, all while maintaining the authenticity and vibrancy that has made Eataly a global success.
