All Black BMC Bike $19,500 usd Swiss watch maker Hublot known for creating some of the most beautiful and expensive watches in the world, partnered with Swiss racing bicycle manufacturer BMC and together they created a limited edition bicycle, built along the same principals as Hublot watches. The distinctive all black bike called the BMC All Black Hublot Team Machine edition is crafted from innovative materials using state of the art technology. As with anything Hublot makes, attention has been paid to every single detail making this creation a real work of art. The beautifully designed bike from the “All Black” collection offers a perfect blend of form and function, and is made from light, highperformance materials. The development of the bike was based on a special Hublot watch whose exclusively black design combines a range of materials such as ceramic, rubber and carbon. This combination of materials also forms the link between the watch and bicycle. The BMC Team Machine’s frame has carbon tubes held together by aluminium sleeves at the bottom bracket, head tube and the Cross Skeleton concept. According to the company, this greatly increases the frame’s rigidity while keeping its weight down. The overall weight of the bike is 6.9 kilograms. The pedals are titanium with bearings that contain ceramic material to reduce friction and the frame is made from carbon fiber for strength and rigidity. Hublot manufactured a limited run of 30 of the All Black Hublot Team Machines which retailed for $19,500 USD.

Drawing inspiration from the skilled glassworkers of Murano, Dale Chihuly began experimenting with glassmaking techniques alongside his own team of master glassblowers and assistants. These creative forays carried the artist on paths never treaded before, of glassmaking innovation, fantastic architecture, and mind-blowing shapes. Unfortunately, in 1976, an accident caused Mr. Chihuly the loss of one eye and his activity faced a sudden halt. In consequence, he renounced his position as gaffer and passed it to the next best capable man, William Morris. As years went by, Dale Chihuly had brought forth the Macchia series alongside the Soft Cylinder and the Seaform. These works brought with them acclamations for sculptural innovation and masterful glassblowing techniques. In 1988, the artist began working on the detailed Venetian series alongside his gaffer, master Italian glassworker Lino Tagliapietra. During the 1990s, Chihuly’s focus was concentrated on specific designs such as the tridimensional art-glass chandeliers, internationally acclaimed in 1996. Chihuly’s most ambitious large-scale project, the ‘Chihuly over Venice’, was completed following two years of painstaking work and featured fourteen exquisite chandeliers hung throughout Venice. A fascinating video was compiled by PBS, displaying the complete procedure of the chandelier manufacture up to the moment they were mounted in Venice. Chihuly’s chandeliers had been on display at various exhibitions across the globe and at major international venues. One was installed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 2011, during the museum’s showing of Chihuly’s works. Dale Chihuly’s works can be viewed at several Holsten Galleries as well as in ten major museums throughout the world.

ain or shine, Calgarians can be found taking advantage of the natural beauty of the city’s river pathways -- an experience that just wouldn’t exist without the foresight of former Calgary Mayor Jack Leslie. Born in Calgary in 1920 in a home on the Elbow River, a love for nature was fostered in Jack from a young age. He camped with his parents in the mountains, worked as a bellboy at the Chateau Lake Louise and built the Fay-Mar-K fishing camp on the banks of the Kootenay River in Kootenay National Park, the adventures of which are vividly described in Jean Leslie’s book Three Rivers Beckoned: Life and Times with Calgary Mayor Jack Leslie. After his days at Fay-Mar-K, Jack returned to full time real estate appraisal, and then on October 13, 1964, was elected Mayor after serving as alderman for four years. During this time rapid growth of the city was causing downtown congestion complicated by the railway tracks running through the core. The CPR wanted to move the tracks along the banks of the Bow River and while Jack at first stood alone in a battle against the railroad, others gradually joined with their support. Today Calgary has the envied and much used 700 km pathway system and the preserved and enhanced Prince’s Island Park that citizens and visitors enjoy year-round. His legacy continues as well through the Jack Leslie Youth Environment Grants presented each spring to competing school students.
