Online travel forums constantly buzz with people asking which island is best: Kauai or Maui? And beaches are just one of the biggest differences in the two. Kauai simply has more of them: 50 miles vs. 30 miles on Maui. (And you’ll be sharing those beaches with a lot less folks on Kauai. Maui had a million more visitors last year.) Canadians love Maui, and for hot, dry weather, it’s the closest thing to a sure bet. Each island has a protected (leeward) side with less rainfall—and because of Maui’s elongated shape, its sunny south and west shores go on forever. Poipu, Kauai’s sunniest, nearly rain-free resort area, encompasses a smaller area.
Of course, Maui has verdant areas too, such as Hana, on the east side. But it’s a 2.5-hour drive around 600 curves and over 54 bridges. If you’re a golfer, both islands have great greens (14 courses on Maui, 10 on Kauai). When it comes to shopping, dining, and nightlife, Maui is more developed, and clearly offers more options. But the quieter, less-commercialized Kauai is pretty darn good or as we like to say “no ka oi,” (Number One). If you’re thinking about investing, choosing between the two is a great problem to have. text :: Kate Missine In a blurring of lines between fantasy and reality, Mercedez-Benz is premiering a machine that transcends virtual and physical worlds. The Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo, premiered at the Los Angeles Auto Show, is a virtual concept supercar, designed for Sony’s PlayStation 3 racing simulation Gran Turismo 6. Fully functional aside from the powertrain, the 1:1 scale model was developed as a visionary concept, to then be gradually integrated into the game.
AMG Vision Gran Turismo blends the classic and the modernistic, with progressive interpretations of Mercedes-Benz signature elements. Boldly curved and aggressively styled, the car presents a dramatically wide, long, and low-slung shell, evoking the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow racing cars of the 1930s. The dynamic form showcases an extended hood, sculptural side contours, and wide, low rear with no window, accented by muscular wheel arches, gullwing doors, and angled headlights. The iconic radiator grille recalls the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, updated with cool LED lighting.
The interior is no less edgy, with inspirations of Formula 1 and fighter jet cockpits, gullwing-like dashboard, and futuristic controls. The supercar theoretically kicks out 577 horsepower with a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, and features eight exhaust pipes, one for each cylinder. Thanks to AMG’s aluminum and carbon-fiber structure, the Vision Gran Turismo weighs in at only 3053 pounds. Thrilling as it would be to actually drive one of these babies, they are sadly limited solely to the virtual realm; owners of the Gran Turismo 6 can get their on-screen adrenaline fix once the fantasy car makes its way into the game.

The Porsche Macan, derived from the Indonesian word for ‘Tiger’, was initially based on the Audi Q5, but with a series of Porsche-exclusive additions to the 2015 version their shared platform is now one of the sole remaining similarities between the two. At 4, 112 pounds, the Macan is almost 300 pounds lighter
than the Q5, measuring 184.3 inches long, 65.2 inches wide, and 63.9 inches high, about 6 inches shorter than the Cayenne. The base engine is a 3.0-liter V6, producing 340 horsepower, with the Sport Chrono model boasting a 400 horsepower, turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 with a zero to sixty speed of only 4.4 seconds. The handling is as flawless as one would expect from a Porsche, configured with an all-wheel-drive system based on the Porsche 911 Carrera 4, and featuring Porsche active suspension management and optional torque vectoring for maximum control.
The Macan comes equipped with an electronic-assist power steering system, providing ultimate customization of the driving experience. Drivers can choose from a range of steering settings electronically, simply by connecting a laptop. The long-term partnership will produce a new high-performance car sound system, created by Bowers & Wilkins in collaboration with Maserati, and available exclusively in Maserati cars from 2013.

As spring approaches --- the thoughts of landscaping and outdoor design are as important to people as is the architecture of the residence … Planters and pots are a very major very easy design concept that add a beautiful visual concept to the landscaping. They come in a multitude of designs --finishes - and sizes. Materials best for planters are made from high-end Italian polyeuthene plastics -- as they withstand our temperate variations. They’re good for upto 40 below and can be used indoors or outdoors --- and are maintenance free. These are a great inexpensive way to highlight doorways -- driveways - or feature areas in the garden. Most of them have the option of lighting up – they create a certain mood. Colors range from basics of white and black to soft hues of green and pink tones. Most people will group them in threes or fives with various heights and styles. New on the horizon is lighting for fun from Germany --- lighting can be functional but not boring…. as the photos show --- lighting can have a conversation appeal to them and still provide the required lighting needed. This type of lighting is more suited to the new contemporary style homes and architecture. Installation is very simple so people don’t have to worry about expensive complicated electrical invoices. The Campari suspension and table lamp have actual real campari bottles with the real soda in them! The Alizz Cooper is reminiscent of Alice Cooper days -- and the whole fixture is totally flexible so it can be designed and arranged in whatever manner the client wishes. The ‘Flying Flames’ is a suspension lighting system or chandelier with exposed circuit boards and 192 micro leds that have a random computer flame in it. Another trend -- we are seeing furniture requests that allow much more flexible use -- like the Bonaldo Land -- furniture today needs to have flexibility for multi-use purposes --- for different types of social activities -maybe for a couple of people or for a group of people and a larger social event or function -- but also, as needs change -- so does the environment people live in – they may want to move the furnishings downstairs to a family room or even move to another location and need it to be flexible enough to adapt in a new space layout . Same with the fabric coverings -- the existing fabric, color and texture might not work in the new space -- so most brands now have totally removable frame covers and cushion covers -- all held on by velcro .. can be taken off for cleaning -repairs -- or summer and winter versions as desired. Color tones are moving towards nice beiges and grey textures. To add to all of it -- the bright tones of yellows and other summer colours are being used to add an element of contrast Other color elements come in very contemporary pieces that become pieces of art themselves -The other fun way to add color is the Moooi bar antique stools -- easy very economical way adding fun to a social dining or kitchen area. Another really fun thing to add indoors or outdoors is the SERRALUNGA PALOMA bird -- plastic and can be lit version or not -- and can be used as a sitting bench in the backyard ‌ very fun. Coming back strong also is the very dark grey almost black tones in fabric -- but very soft to the touch with base frames in stainless steel! - side tables to match with the black acid etched glass tops -- very elegant and stately and they work with all types of design styles.
