Understated furniture and neutral wall colours, with touches of soft blues and orange achieves this aim. “The classy shade of white on the furniture makes the ambiance feeling calm and soothing and lets the eyes flow freely toward the unobstructed view”, says Nahal. All the Roche Bobois furniture was customized to suit the concept. The two white “IL Teatro” sectionals, low profile, facing each other with a beautiful soft curve design create the maximum seating area while making a clean and minimalist statement. The Archipel cocktail tables complement the ocean design concept of the living room with underwater accent colors and shapes. The custom made rug in silk and subtle aqua blue color sets the relaxing mood in the room. A feature wall made from different pieces of hand-painted glass is woven in such a way as to capture nuances of ocean shades. The effect is captivating and dynamic, adding a tranquil and unique aspect to the room. The kitchen, which is the pivotal part of the home, is where the concept formed. “Ben loves orange”, explains Nahal, “he wanted ideally to use the orange on the Kitchen Island.” The island contrasts the main cabinetry finished in a vibrant orange Silestone. featured with a wall covered in Silestone, is located behind the main kitchen. Both kitchens have a wide-open window with unobstructed view of downtown buildings. A Chronos Dining table and contemporary white Amplitude Chairs with clean lines and a minimal profile are showcased on a soft plush carpet that reflects a gradation of ocean tones. A beautiful orchid arrangement, with a hint of orange, in an illuminated resin planter, creates a dramatic lighting and adds to the elegance of the dining area. “The orange represents change and movement”, and with just a touch of it in the beautiful ‘Contemplation’ painting by Caro, placed above the speed up buffet, the designer helps tie the room together. The light fixture has very clean lines with candle light effect which sets the mood for a dining ambiance. The Family room was masterfully set-up in a manner to maximize the room size and seating arrangement. It has a built in cabinet system in bird maple material that complements the smooth finish of the marble fireplace. A beautiful painting by Caro, called “Utopia”, representing movement and happy times, was customized in scale and color scheme to fit perfectly in this ambiance. The color palette is very neutral with a lime green accent that gives a fresh, springtime feel and life to the room. “The reason we chose the lime green was because it is energizing and vibrant”, says Nahal. All the Roche Bobois furniture pieces in the family room, including the area rug, were customized in France and Italy to meet the requirements. The two sofas with ottomans were done in a luxury 3 mm thick, cat.14 “Calf leather”. They have adjustable easy headrests that help keep the furniture in a low profile, making the space more open and allowing the eye to flow easily towards the view.
A large mirror keeps the space looking clean and reflects the beautiful views of ocean and downtown buildings. Flight Armchairs and ottoman are in a vibrant orange - drawing the accent color from the kitchen to the family area. The striking area rug is a piece of art. It has a 3D effect and is customized in the several colors existing in the room. It finishes to tie everything together. The two flower arrangements with a touch of orange give a warm and inviting feel to the room. The living room, dining room, kitchen and family areas meld beautifully to create one large open concept room. At a glance the observer gains an appreciation of the space from the front foyer. The open vistas allow the eye to take in the rooms across the house. From the living room, for example, visitors can look straight through the kitchen to the family room. The designer indicated different zones with very clear themes and moods based on her colour choices. Continuity is maintained by using marble from the foyer for the fireplaces and window sills; the same wall colour is also used throughout the upper level. The lower level of the home has been laid out to accommodate the owner’s love of entertaining. “The goal was to create a fun, comfortable, functional space to serve multiple purposes like entertaining guests, while also accommodating a spot to watch games and play poker, simply by using the open layout efficiently.” To fill up the spacious room, a large seating area was used with dark wall colours so the space feels warm and cozy. The floor to ceiling windows and doors open the flow into the spacious backyard, creating a sense of oneness with the outdoors and a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The walnut floors add touches of warmth and richness to the interior and dark tones also help to balance the dramatic views. In terms of furniture selections, the pieces are functional and timeless and as with the house design, they balance the contemporary and modern.

For those who have never had the Icewine experience, it’s quite different than that of normal wine, namely because it is made from grapes that have been naturally frozen on the vine. They are typically harvested in December or January, whereas other grapes are picked sometime from August to October. Harvests for your Merlot, Pinot or Sauvignon’s typically yield 700 liters of juice per ton of grapes. Grapes from Icewine however, will likely produce only 75 to 100 liters of juice per ton, resulting in a smaller amount of more concentrated wine.

“Icewine is very sweet with great depth and intense, highly concentrated flavours of honey, apricot, mango and other tropical flavours. It is best appreciated on its own after dinner or with blue cheese,” says Ritchie. The tricky thing with Icewine and the reason it tends to lean towards the more expensive side, is because of the labourintense and risky production process. By law in Canada, natural ice wines require a hard freeze of -8 degrees or lower that must

take place sometime after the grape is ripe. This means, the grape could be hanging on the vine several months after the normal harvest. So, if Jack Frost doesn’t come soon enough, the grapes will most likely rot and the crops will be lost. Now if the frost comes and is too severe, no juice can be extracted from the grape. Since the fruit must be pressed while it is still frozen, there is only a small window for pickers to harvest the grapes, they have to work overnight and into the early

Emerging against a backdrop of wooded mountain slopes in Switzerland’s village of Bad Ragaz, enveloped in a lush park landscape, the ornate structure of Tamina thermal baths exudes a regal presence in the best traditions of Europe’s grand-hotel culture. Architectural firm Smolenicky & Partner’s winning entry in a 2003 competition, the concept pays homage to the grand resorts of the Baltic coast with a nod to Swiss heritage. Using timber from local fir trees, 115 columns encased in crisp white woodwork add to the pavilion feel, punctuated with Victorian-inspired oval windows encapsulating the view. The architecture spotlights the openness of space over structure, forming a ceremonious setting that celebrates the revered bathing ritual.

Instead of being freestanding, the form of the building volume emerges from the enclosing of exterior spaces. In the area of the open-air baths, for instance, the volume of the building is stepped back and opens out the sunbathing lawn to the wooded slopes of the mountain ridge. The view extends past the existing buildings, screened by newly planted groups of trees. The guests experience a park landscape that melts into the woods and mountain slopes. The predominant landscaped, park-like atmosphere remains intact despite the compact manner of the building. Thus the resort remains characterized by its park. The main entrance to the thermal baths, the spa spring hall, is set on the visual axis of the cul-de-sac, so it stands out as a public facility right from the main road. The Tamina thermal baths is explicitly conceived as a part of the grand-hotel culture. The cultural and aesthetic identity of the project seeks an affinity to both Swiss tradition and the grand hotels of the Baltic coast, like in Heiligendamm. For this reason the building volume has a monumental character, so it stands out as an institution equal to the other buildings in the resort. Simultaneously the thermal baths are intended to relativize the almost “urban” stonework character of the spa spring hall. This explains the snow-white woodwork of the thermal baths, lending it the pavilion-like character of a historical holiday resort. This strategy of using explicit resort architecture is underscored in the building’s formally fanciful oval windows. Seen from the inside, the windows have the effect of over-dimensional picture frames. Oval picture frames were widespread in the Victorian era for landscape scenes, whereby the intention in the current project is to give specific expression to the view over the relatively neutral landscape by means of the gesture of the frame. Metaphorically the creation of the interior spaces of the project has an analogy in cutting clearings in the pattern of a forest by felling individual trees. This is the reverse of the common design process. The exterior spaces are similarly created, by “felling” supports on the periphery of the building. Structurally the building can be more or less seen as a forest, created out of columns instead of trees.

The architects and creators of Miapolis, KOBI KARP, hope that by having the tallest multi-use complex on the globe they will gain leadership for the United States among tall and complex structures, hugely strengthen Miami’s business center and generate more tourism to the area. Not to mention, if the project does get the go ahead it is estimated to create 35,000 permanent jobs. Not only will Miapolis surpass Dubai’s Burj Khalifa in height, but it has been designed keeping our world in mind and boasts a number of ecologically friendly and sustainable features that make it the highest rated LEED-certified structure at any rating level in the U.S. and will be certified as ‘platinum green’. Meaning the structure was built with an effort to improve the efficient use of energy and water, and largely reduce CO2 emissions. This self-sufficient development will use solar and wind energy to power itself and will house different eco-systems. Some included are water desalinization, storm and waste- water management, greenhouse gas management, carbon emission offsets, a modular green roof, and many levels of massive green space, public parks and botanical gardens.
