Ten years ago, a Finnish aeronautical engineer by the name of Aki Suokas began to construct a small flying gadget. Today, this incredible “gadget” is called the FlyNano. Aviation consultant, flight designer and enthusiastic pilot, Suokas dreamed of a way to create a very light single seat sea plane that would weigh less than 70 kilos. Under European regulations, this weight determines how the plane is legally classified. If in this weight category, the aircraft is not regulated in any way, as an example, a paraglider fits into this class. This weight target created a challenge for Suokas, he wasn’t sure if he could make an aircraft with a hard surface that could fit into this category, but that didn’t stop him from trying. “I found this box-wing concept from some old documents (i.e. from 1930), and immediately saw the potential for weight control,” said Suokas. “The first flight of the Nano, happened in 2008, lasting about one second. Well, it was a small cardboard model thrown off our balcony, but it demonstrated the basic layout and it worked.” After years of trial and error, and numerous computer models (structural and aerodynamical) Suokas had finally made a design that would work. In 2009 the first large model was built and flown in summer 2010. Launched at Aero 2011 in Friedrichshafen – Germany, The FlyNano comes in 3 basic models: a 20 kW electric version, a 24 hp gasoline model, and a 35 hp gasolinepowered racing version. It’s extremely

light because of its advanced carbonfiber composite construction with a wingspan of nearly 5 meters, nose to tail 3.5 m, and height 1.3 m. As much as we would all love to be one with the birds, the FlyNano does require a skillfull flyer. Not just anyone
