It was at that moment Malcolm decided he knew he could sell the property; it was just a matter of getting the right people to see it. Using his marketing prowess, he planned an exclusive preview event so extravagant most would never forget. He then invited the city’s top 25 Asian realtors and instructed them to bring their buyers. He had the event catered by Dundarave Fish Market, served local BC wines, sent out limousines to pick up potential buyers and to “put the sizzle into the party”, the black helicopter sat in the driveway beside a Rolls-Royce convertible and a white Lamborghini. “We actually took at least 20 potential buyers out in the helicopter to show the property from the sky.” Over 80 high profile buyers attended the extravagant party, one in particular was so impressed he bought the property that night, “100 percent from the marketing,” insists Malcolm, “and of course the property was spectacular… At the end of the day the buyer was happy, the seller was happy and I was proud of what I did.” One could say the stars aligned that night for Malcolm, but it was much more than that. His skill for selling homes comes from a deeper place where he believes in encouraging people to live and love their life. “I sell dreams to people. Vancouver’s Finest Icewine Collection “We believe our Icewine collection is among the finest in the lower mainland as we currently stock over 60 different Icewines in multiple vintages, as well as an additional 40 late harvest and Port style wines,” says Bellvue’s wine expert and manager, Brian Ritchie.
For those who have never had the Icewine experience, it’s quite different than that of normal wine, namely because it is made from grapes that have been naturally frozen on the vine. They are typically harvested in December or January, whereas other grapes are picked sometime from August to October. Harvests for your Merlot, Pinot or Sauvignon’s typically yield 700 liters of juice per ton of grapes. Grapes from Icewine however, will likely produce only 75 to 100 liters of juice per ton, resulting in a smaller amount of more concentrated wine. “Icewine is very sweet with great depth and intense, highly concentrated flavours of honey, apricot, mango and other tropical flavours. It is best appreciated on its own after dinner or with blue cheese,” says Ritchie. The tricky thing with Icewine and the reason it tends to lean towards the more expensive side, is because of the labour-intense and risky production process. By law in Canada, natural ice wines require a hard freeze of -8 degrees or lower that must take place sometime after the grape is ripe. This means, the grape could be hanging on the vine several months after the normal harvest. So, if Jack Frost doesn’t come soon enough, the grapes will most likely rot and the crops will be lost. Now if the frost comes and is too severe, no juice can be extracted from the grape. Since the fruit must be pressed while it is still frozen, there is only a small window for pickers to harvest the grapes, they have to work overnight and into the early morning to ensure the job gets done right. Ritchie says very good wine can be had for around the forty to fifty dollar range. “My personal favourite is Icewine made from the Riesling grape as the high acidity of Riesling brings a crispness to the wine, keeping the sweetness in balance.” 4 8
