When a shop assistant once asked Yasukazu Suwa,, “Where is the line between fine jewelry and other types?” he first was at a loss. But after some thought, the Chairman of Japanese iconic jewellery
house SUWA, found the answer in categorizing jewellery into three main categories: costume; precious metal; and fine gemstone.

This last category is one that SUWA’s exquisite creations undoubtedly fall into: one that endures through generations, retaining its value regardless of era or trend. With their timeless designs made to withstand the fickleness of fashion, the brand has been in the jewellery business for over a century. Started in 1908, SUWA’s history traces back to founder Kinomatsu Suwa, who first encountered a gemstone and became fascinated with its beauty while visiting his metalsmith brother in Yokohama. Today, SUWA puts its focus on the jewels at the heart of their pieces: selecting the clearest, most stunning of diamonds and colored gemstones and highlighting them with impeccably crafted settings. Gemstones chosen fall exclusively in the “blue” Gem Quality zone: highly transparent and free of defects. Rough-cut diamonds are polished from ‘sawable’ clear octahedrons, and colored gemstones are sourced from all over the globe: rubies from Myanmar and Mozambique; sapphires from Cambodia and Sri Lanka; emeralds from Brazil and the Sandawana mine in Zimbabwe. SAWA’s precious metals are exceptional in their own right, like PT950 platinum that’s 95% pure; in their commitment to longevity, SUWA does not use alloys such as white gold that can change color over time. The gemstones and metals are paired carefully to create show-stopping combinations. The warm red of rubies and the vibrant green of emeralds, for instance, are paired with warmer yellow gold; while platinum brings out the cool rich blue of sapphires. Pieces are set and finished

meticulously to ensure comfort and wearability, with features such as ajour, window-like openings on the reverse side of rings that let in light while dissipating skin’s moisture. In addition to a traditional selection of classic diamond rings and ornate gem-studded anniversary bands, SUWA brings out several collections distinguished by their unique forms. The MDJ line showcases delicate botanical-inspired diamond pieces cut in the leaf-like marquise design. The Pristine ring collection introduces 22-carat “Poesy Rings” in a 15th Century Renaissance Revival style, engraved with a sentimental phrase around the shank. Aptly-named Compass and Ocean lines are inspired by nautical themes, with designs channeling a pointing compass or the ocean’s rippled surface. Finally, the Ephesus collection offers a set of rings in a striking octagon shape, a symbol revered in many cultures as signifying fortune and eternity. Q. What is a regular work day like as the Director of Timekeeping? What is it that you love about your work? A. Each day is diverse and full of new challenges. Especially as we get closer to the Olympic Games. At this stage now, I am there working closely with my team to double and triple check that all of our technologies are in place and ready to go for Rio. Being part of the Olympic Games and being there to capture some of the greatest athletic performances is very special. It’s a very proud moment, especially to see new technologies benefitting both athletes and spectators alike.
Q. Is there anything you’d like to see change in the international racing sports scene? A. Every sport is different and we see opportunity for evolution in almost all of them. It’s not about wanting change; it’s about looking at what timekeeping is currently in place and thinking about what can be done better. I think we are already at a very advanced standard of timekeeping excellence, so we don’t necessarily go looking for change. But we also listen to the sport governing bodies and athletes themselves, so often, a desire for new technology comes from them.
Q. What has been the greatest challenge in your work so far? A. There’s a lot of pressure that comes with timing the Olympic Games. Overall, that is always the greatest challenge. We have athletes who have spent their entire careers building to this point and their chance of a gold medal can come down to the fraction of a second that we measure. It’s a challenge to make sure we get that right. But it’s also the biggest reward.
Q. How is Omega gearing up for the Rio Olympics? A. We’ve been preparing for years. Almost since the end of the Olympic Games in London. It’s interesting that you should mention gear. For Rio alone, OMEGA is sending around 450 tonnes of equipment, and miles and miles of cabling to support our 480 timekeepers. It’s a massive undertaking, but a necessary one.

Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the Ferrari 488 GTB’s sculptural forms are completely new. They accentuate the car’s sportiness yet retain the classically clean, pure lines typical of Ferrari’s

legendary styling. The seamless interweaving of form and function is clear in every detail, in fact. Certain design elements also draw on styling cues from the past, not least the 308 GTB-inspired scalloped flanks. The Ferrari 488 GTB makes its debut in a new Rosso Corsa Met livery with black and red technical fabric cabin trim, and in a Grigio Ferro Met livery with black and Beige Tradizione leather interior trim. On the subject of extreme performance, also featuring on the stand is the F12berlinetta which is the most powerful car in the Ferrari range, courtesy of its 740 cv V12 engine and transaxle architecture. MAKES ITS OLYMPIC DEBUT WORDS: KATE MISSINE
Regardless of whether you’re a golfer or avid spectator, the sport’s appearance at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio is bound to get your attention, as the world’s best players contend for the gold in a historically notable event.

First, a quick history lesson. The game of golf, for those not aware, dates back to the Middle Ages, originating in Scotland. In 1900, the sport made its first Olympic debut in Paris, followed by another round in St Louis in 1904. This was the last year

that golf would be played at the Summer Olympic Games – until now. In a revolutionary moment for the sport, 2016 will mark the break of a 112 year hiatus, where golf will once again be part of the Summer Olympics in Rio. Men and women will compete on a brand-new 18hole Olympic Golf Course designed by acclaimed architect Gil Hanse, whose portfolio includes world-class courses such as Applebrook and the Blue Monster in Doral.
Located at Reserva de Marapendi in Barra da Tijuca, a suburb west of Rio, the remarkable Olympic course is strategically situated in proximity to other Olympic venues and the Athletes’ Village. With a par 71 track, the demanding course comes with plenty of features and obstacles to challenge the cream of the globe’s golfer crop. Two artificial lakes and a narrow layout will require a great deal of precision, while bunkers, extensive undergrowth and a windy open landscape present their own set of difficulties. In keeping with the Olympic Commitee’s goals of an environmentally sustainable event, a number of ecoconscious considerations were incorporated in the design. Constructed on a section of reclaimed land, a variety of native local vegetation was used for the landscaping, along with water-efficient grass types, native multi-colored sand for the holes, and innovative additions such as a canopy to collect rainwater. In total, over 650,000 seedlings were planted during construction, increasing the area covered by vegetation from 10 to 67 per cent and from 118 to 245 catalogued species of plants and wildlife, making it one of the country’s largest environmental rejuvenation projects. After the Games, the course will be utilized as a public facility (and the city’s first public golf course) for a minimum of twenty years. Some of the city’s goals involve promoting golf at the national level, attracting top players and professionals, providing work and educational opportunities, and serving as a venue for competitions, social projects, and tourism. “This will be the biggest park in the city,” said Rio mayor Eduardo Paes. “Our aim is to get families and children interested in golf and help grow the sport in Brazil.” Not quite ready to tee it off at the Olympics?
