P U BLI S H E R ’S N O TE Inspiration - The Common Thread - The Key A few minutes ago, I watched an action video of a snow-boader as he went down a snow-capped peak - the amazing quality video, which captured every movement and stunt, was shot by a personal drone which was tracking the geotag on the boarder’s wrist. We’ve seen stuff like this in movies like Star Wars - a personal drone hovering along as you walk, perhaps carrying on a conversation. Did we truly believe it would happen within our lifetime? It is - here and now.

Our imagination has never been so active and enthralled ever before. What’s the common thread in all of this? Inspiration. It’s ordinary people doing extraordinary things - people who, through a deep sense of purpose, dedicate themselves to accomplishing incredible things.
This is a shot of Mud Bay, as I rode my hybrid bike along the edge. My photo above is a selfie takenfrom the same bike. On a recent flight to Toronto I made a new friend who inspired me to take up cycling - something I’d been thinking about for quite some time. Thank you, Tim Saxer. Hope you and your family are well. The 5 hour flight was made shorter by the enjoyable conversations we had.
You don’t have to look far to find examples of such inspired individuals. Right in this city, there’s plenty to be found, and you’ll find them in all areas of life. Across this page is a good example. The Lift The Children Foundation, which is dedicated to lifting the fate of under-privileged children, is supported by the tireless efforts and vision of individuals like John Volken, its founder, and Abdul Ladha. In the world of luxury real estate, Malcolm Hasman is such an individual; in the world of cuisine and confectionaries, Steven Hodge of Temper; in the business of insurance, Davina Zalesky; in technology, Ryan Holmes; all of them here in Vancouver. This magazine is dedicated as much to inpiring individuals as it is to those that are inspired by them. Copper elements are used as accents to both exterior and interior features to highlight the performance hybrid potential of the concept’s advanced new powertrain. Performance goals including top speed are set to challenge competitors and define a new segment benchmark. The inspiration for the interior comes
from the continuous line that runs around the cabin, driving through the console and into two symmetrical wings before flowing into the door and looping back into the console armrest. _ World Class Chef & Chocolatier _ STEVEN HODGE Temper’s Culinary Artisan Delights West Vancouver with Gastronomic Wizardry Internationally trained by some of the world’s leading Chefs (think Thomas Haas, Wolfgang Puck, and Gordon Ramsay), expert Chocolatier, and Pâtissier, Steve Hodge’s pedigree alone is befitting of culinary acclaim. It is, however, the mounting buzz around Temper, his recently opened gourmet chocolate and pastry shop in West Vancouver’s exclusive Dundarave neighbourhood, that is turning heads (and delighting taste buds).

Since opening in January of 2014, Temper has become a highly soughtafter culinary destination in West Vancouver. What sets Temper above average cafés? Temper is a European-influenced café, with modern touches to it. The whole design of the place is based off of my experience of where I’ve worked. So on the design part, it was a little bit of everything and everywhere I had worked in my career, and in the food part it was everything I’d learnt in my career—and now I’m bringing that international experience forward here with Temper. Temper’s menu is upscale and innovative. What can you tell us about some of your unique and decadent offerings? We’re now doing a little bit of viennoiserie, which are pastries, and we have our chocolate program, which

is an assortment of truffles, bon bons, and pralines. We do all different types of cakes in different sizes, and custom cakes, and then we have our highend individual desserts—desserts with classical French techniques with modern twists. There’s also a savoury program, where we offer different types of sandwiches, which change every six months, and we’re working now to put soup on the menu. We also have confections on retail. We offer everything from English toffee, to chocolate-covered candy peels, and our own versions of modern chocolate bars. The café’s name is clever—what’s the origin of the name “Temper”? Temper is a word that’s used in many types of cooking. So for example, we’re a chocolate place, but in order to work with chocolate, you have to temper it, which means heating and cooling
chocolate to get it to the right crystal stage so you can work with it. The name is fun too, because we can have a play on the word temper when you think of a chef’s temper. Temper is located in the coveted seaside neighbourhood of Dundarave. What makes the location so special? At the end of the day, you can go downtown and make a quick buck without longevity, or you can go to a small community like Dundarave and slowly build your business—but build it with longevity because, in a small community, people will support you. That’s what’s happened since we’ve opened—all of our customers have become like our big outside family because we’ve gotten to know them all. And, I’m from Dundarave, so it’s great to be back where I grew up.

D ON NA GIRAU D _ From prodigy to celebrated artist, Vancouver born artist Donna Giraud has become a sought-after artist among art enthusiasts in this city. We recently sat down with her to discuss her burgeoning artistic career, her inspiration, and what sets her apart from the pack.
W
What are you hoping to evoke in viewers with your work?
I like to take the viewer on a visual journey full of emotion. My art is about me having a beautiful conversation or experiencing deep and moving emotions; that’s what inspires all of my work. When someone can viscerally relate to, or be emotionally moved by, a piece of my art, that’s the ultimate reward.
I think every human craves that authentic connection with people. What I do is artistically work through my emotions with these connections on canvas to tell the viewer a story. I would be lying if I said that I haven’t painted from heartache, or some sort of dark and twisty experience, but I feel that my emotional rawness and vulnerability ultimately adds to an authenticity that viewers of my art naturally pick up on and connect with. Literally, my work is my life, my soul on

the canvas; I’m telling a story through canvas and paint. Your artistic expression has become a coveted commodity—what has been your experience with your rapidly growing popularity? As each year passes, the momentum is building brilliantly. I truly believe I’ve been blessed. I feel my positivity, tenacity and courage to continually put myself out there have been pivotal to my success. I pride myself on making an effort to stay connected with families and individuals who acquire my art - to me, they’re like my extended family who have shared in my experiences and emotions through my art. I treasure every connection I’ve made. These values have kept me busier than I ever expected. This year, I’m booked for more shows than ever before. My ultimate goal is to create an art empire of sorts—for people to be able to experience my art and immediately recognize that “it’s a Donna Giraud.” What challenges have you experienced through this journey of art? The biggest challenge is just staying positive. Artists are their own hardest critics—so it’s about staying optimistic and confident in the day that you do go to the studio when you’re super excited…and then absolutely nothing comes out. It’s about being present with every brush stroke and trying to remember that perseverance pushes you to that next level and that’s where the magic begins. What sets you apart as an artist? What sets me apart as an artist is my ability to connect with people—to actually sit and chat with them and see them, and to tell them my story both verbally and visually through my art. People want to know the artist; they want to know your journey with each piece and how it connects with their lives. I also pride myself in my playful approach. Art should be fun, expressive and authentic, not pretentious. My passion for painting has evolved into a life long journey of art and the relationships it has enabled and inspired.

DH: What first sparked your interest in architecture? B: Art. Gardens. I loved both. Always have. And Landscape Architecture was the perfect choice that combined my loves into something professional and serious. My interior and architectural practices grew out of a curiosity to do more than landscape architecture. I knew if I could design all aspects of a hotel/resort I could perhaps make something truly significant. I have not yet, but it is a goal! DH: Where do you draw inspiration from? Do you have a design signature, something that unites all of your projects? B: Fire. I love fire, and it’s in all my work. I’m inspired by travel and new lands. I love the quirk factor, the

unexpected, and the strange. For example, at Shinta Maani’s Bangkok Studio, we took a series of paintings of the Angkor plans and used them as a ceiling. DH: How do you approach your projects? What do you focus on first? B: Gosh, that is a good question. The DNA that holds the hotel together, the storyline, is the most important thing to get right. I look at designing a hotel like a producer making a movie. If there is no engaging story, it will flop on opening night. I strive to create classics. DH: Tell us about the Shinta Mani resort. What makes it unique? What was your vision behind the design? B: I wanted to create a fresh take on something very, very old, but
oh-so-inspiring. As Shinta Mani is just a short jaunt away from one of the world wonders, Angkor Wat, I think what makes it unique is the contemporary interpretation of the 13th C complex in combination with our wide-eyed, young, tireless staff that want nothing more than to learn and to please. DH: What would you say is the most important factor when designing a world-class destination? B: A good hotel cannot be trendy; it has to be able to stand the test of time, and it has to be manageable as far as maintenance.
And, most
importantly, it must be capable of capturing the imagination of the world.
With a flair for the flamboyant, the kitsch, and the exotic, architect Bill Bensley may be many things, but ordinary he is definitely not.

Beckoned by a taste for adventure, the Harvard-educated, Anaheimborn designer has brought his funloving California spirit to Southeast Asia, setting up shop in Bangkok and infusing his work with the richness and color of local cultures. With properties in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other sunsoaked getaway spots under his belt, Bensley has turned his sights on Cambodia, namely the colorful resort city of Siem Reap. Just steps off the bustling city hub and a tuktuk ride from history-rich Angkor Wat sits Shinta Mani – a one-ofa-kind destination steeped in the
designer’s unmistakable vision. Airy, sleek, and clean-cut, the 39-room boutique hotel echoes the distinctive architecture of Angkor Wat with geometric columns, recessed entryways, and mesmerizing inlaid ceilings. Vivid Khmer artwork and bold orange accents puncture the monochromatic grey color palette, inspired by the robes of monks contrasting the ascetic hallways of Angkor temples. In true Bensley style, outdoor spaces are almost overindulgently verdant, spilling with the opulent greenery of the tropics and unexpected touches like daybeds swung over the open-air dining terrace. Water sets a focal theme with soothing aquatic elements throughout culminating in a dramatic infinity pool in the courtyard.
No resort experience would be complete without fantastic eats and there’s plenty to be had at Shinta Mani, with native-grown herbs and spices punching up flavor on reinvented local specialties at Kroya, Royal Khmer for ‘food’. And long days of sightseeing call for a wind-down with a scrub down of white clay and Rattanakiri coffee beans, just one of the traditional Khmer healing therapies at the Spa. But the true Cambodian treatment here is in the service: everywhere you go, you are certain to be greeted with a warm smile and the country’s genuine hospitality. And part of Shinta Mani’s mission is to give back to the Khmer people: The hotel provides an opportunity for disadvantaged local youth to find gainful employment in the hospitality industry through training and working at the resort.
