We work in some of the poorest slums in the world to provide aid DIRECTLY to orphanages caring for their children. 100% of all donations go directly to the orphanages. Lift the Children is inclusive of all faiths and cultures, and is committed to feeding and educating children and to LIFT them out of poverty. We are currently helping support over 10,000 children in more than 80 orphanages in East Africa and have begun to implement long term self-sustainability programs with a goal of educating the poor out of poverty. Our strategy is to reorient the agriculture and farming systems currently in use towards methods of food production that are highly productive, sustainable, and drought resistant. Over time, these programs will help to provide mass poverty reduction through education. Our goal is to educate over 2 million people in permaculture over the next 5 years.

WITH CALGARY’S FINE JEWELLERY ICON _ BERNARD FLORENCE _ In 1955, a young Calgary couple, Les and Dora Florence, embarked on a dream: starting their own business dedicated to the sparkling world of jewellery. Six decades later, Calgary Jewellery marks a milestone, a sixtieth anniversary of the family business turned Calgary institution. Among the shiny spotlights and polished displays, the owner takes a moment to glance back and reminisce on the steps and stories that have led up to this memorable date – and to look ahead to the future.

“It’s like putting 60 years into five minutes,” smiles Florence, who stepped into the business 37 years ago along with his sister, Caroline. His love for the work began, he recalls, with his parents: an elegant French-born mother who taught an appreciation of style and beauty, and a father who instilled values of service and attention to detail. Heesen introduces their latest super yacht, the Project Nova. Unlike Galactica Star, Nova is not designed for exceptional high speeds but instead uses the ultra efficient and easily driven hull form at the lower speeds typically associated with traditional displacement hulls but, with

For a yacht 50m long, displacing 315 tons and with a gross tonnage of 499, is an impressive achievement. As a mixed-use tower, the building will house a luxury 147-room hotel filled with modern amenities, fine dining and nightlife, and 217 glamorous residences. Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver design is a legacy of the acclaimed late architect Arthur Erickson, who was the visionary behind many of the city’s most prominent structures. With Erickson’s influence clear in every curve of the building, it’s

as if it was destined to be a perfect fit in the city— simultaneously transforming the skyline and nestling into its already established role as a jewel in the crown of downtown Vancouver. “When this tower is completed, it will inspire great ambition and excellence for many to excel in what they do,” says Tiah. “Because it’s an example of excellence and success that most people are looking to achieve in their lives.”

Shaping & Transforming the Vancouver skyline

“This was a rail line and industrial lands before,” says Peter Udzenija, Director of Corporate Relations for the Concord Group of Companies, pointing out a spot by Vancouver’s False Creek on a scale model of the city. Today, the formerly neglected landscape is a bustling mix of residences and businesses, courtesy of the Concord Group’s dynamic development team – and it’s not alone. Because if there’s one thing the folks at Concord know, it’s what makes a great neighbourhood.

“Many cities have these industrial areas adjacent to their cities, wanting to turn into communities,” says Udzenija; “we were the first to do it at this scale.” Concord is known for a lot of firsts. For nearly thirty years, the company has been creating one-of-a-kind, uniquely livable master-planned communities across Canada’s thriving centers. From skyscrapers to urban markets, the company has redefined streets and

skylines and transformed Canadian cityscapes, each building a feat of architectural ingenuity. But behind the sleek facades and soaring towers, the glass and the concrete, the engineers and urban planners, there is something bigger setting Concord apart from its numerous counterparts: the understanding of what it means to exist as true community, and of what people need and want in the cities where they live, work, and play. “We were the ones to build the first urban Costco,” remarks Udzenija. Yaletown’s Urban Fare gourmet market, the very first of its kind ever built in Canada, was also on Concord property. “Our Senior VP of Planning, Matt Meehan, said, “When I first saw people in their housecoats walking from their building into the first Urban Fare, that’s when I knew it was a community.” Udzenija talks about the company’s efforts to integrate private and public space. Residents of its multiple

Yaletown developments, for instance, enjoy proximity to the water, marina, and numerous city parks. A local restaurateur, owner of Provence Marinaside, lives in Point Grey but prefers the area for its sense of togetherness. “There’s a much bigger sense of community down here. People get out, use the parks as their backyard. It’s the urban suburban.” Concord buildings are carefully constructed to allow flowthrough, view corridors, and plenty of open space to make the most of their surroundings. Density for Concord doesn’t mean skimping on comfort either: fully-loaded amenities such as exclusive health clubs and guest suites

reserved typically for homes on the city outskirts. “Downtown condo living is somewhat newer for our city,” says the project’s Sales Executive Stephanie Koo, “and Concord was very privy to that.” The result is an urban dwelling with a never-before-seen level of privacy and comfort, including private elevator access for majority of the suites, personal megagarages, and an underground parkade with three car wash facilities. And there’s plenty of room to be had inside, too – the penthouse suite, for instance, spans over an astounding 14,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, including a private roof. It’s Concord’s first step in bringing Calgary into a new era of higherdensity city living. “I’m a born-and-raised Calgarian,” says Koo, “So it’s really exciting for me to be a part of something that’s going to transform my city.”

however, the fresh appreciation for mid-century modern art, design and architecture points to a renewed reverence for the refreshing beauty of simplicity. “Mid-century modern is the movement into a modernist approach to form and shape and execution,” says Imeson. “It’s all about the purity of the form, the simplicity of the form, and the use of really beautiful colors.” Celebrating the mid-century movement in art glass for over a decade, Circa is an exclusive concept—it’s the only art glass gallery of its kind in the country. The work featured at Circa is carefully selected to reveal the exceptional artistry of an incredibly-focused moment in space and time: 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s European art glass. Today, this vintage work is timeless, visually outstanding at first glance; but, as Imeson explains, the history behind each piece enhances its artistic value. “When people find out that the pieces are forty, fifty, sixty years old, it adds a whole other realm of appreciation.” While the gallery’s focus is patently vintage, Imeson also incorporates select contemporary pieces into Circa’s selection—as a means of enhancing the mid-century experience today. “I’m bringing in nonrepresentational work to show people how artists are interpreting the medium today. I’m not looking to bring in [contemporary] artists that are making vases and bowls and lamps—I’m looking at artists that are taking the medium and really interpreting it in their own way. That adds a whole other realm of interest for people that are into the concept of vintage art glass, but also want to see where it’s going today.”
