PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Stay Inspired

There is an unquestionable connection between art and the experience of luxury.

Sam dHand

Founder & Publisher LUXURY LIVING / Dream Homes LUXE MEDIA NETWORK

I’d like to take a moment to

recognize Lionel Lorence for

his outstanding and unmatched contribution to the luxury real estate market in Vancouver. Lionel stands alone in this

accolade with 48 years, nearly half a century, of his life

dedicated to this business,

achieving the very highest in

awards of recognition every year throughout this extraordinary history. I tip my hat to this

Going to Art Basel in Miami last December was certainly a thrilling experience, where each year, roughly half a million pilgrims of art descend on this amazing city to experience the best of what the art world has to offer. It is without a doubt the most superlative and extensive of art exhibitions to be found anywhere in North America. Art is able to transform an otherwise stark man-made world into something exceptional and beautiful. The rejuvenative, transformative and uplifting power of art cannot be overstated. In my 12 years of publishing this beautiful magazine, I’ve been through countless expensive and exceptional properties, and one thing has held true for virtually all of them - if they didn’t have art on the walls, they were little more than large lifeless structures without context or feeling. While Art is that universal language that unites all humanity and holds sway over our minds no matter what corner of the planet we come from or reside in, the power of art goes far beyond. Art is essential to the experience of luxury in every category. This is true in cuisine where a masterful Chef who has spent many years honing their expertise proudly offers an exquisite preparation that is as appealing visually as it is in taste. The same can be said about everything else in life - the automobile we drive is another example: If it didn’t employ the finest in engineering and materials manufactured to the highest of standards and with the strictest of adherence to quality and finishing, is it really a luxury automobile? My point here is simple - It is only when something is elevated to the level of a “work of art” that we experience true luxury, be it gourmet cuisine, a fine wine, beautiful architecture, exquisitely done home interiors, or the Christian Louboutins on your feet. Add a little art to life.

DAWN OF A NEW ERA

ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS

UNV E I L S T H E

FABULOUS

_

ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN _ WORDS: ALEXANDER VILLEGAS

32

It’s a new day for convertibles now that the RollsI Royce Dawn has entered the market. The luxury car company expanded its fleet with a sleek, super-luxury open-top that Rolls-Royce’s CEO called “the sexiest RollsRoyce ever made.”

33

“In creating Dawn we have accepted no compromise to the comfort and luxury of four adults who want to travel together in the pinnacle of style,

Giles Taylor, Director of Design for Rolls-Royce.

34

It’s bold, it’s powerful and it’s modern. The Dawn has timeless, distinguishably Rolls-Royce elements but it’s been amped up for the modern socialite who wants to drive his own Rolls-Royce and be seen doing so. The Dawn pays homage to the 1950s dawn, the dawn is 80% new panels when compared to the wraith, its all new compared to the 1950s dawn. The roof creates a quiet, private sanctuary for the passengers when it’s up and lets the rest of the world admire the Dawn’s striking interior when it’s down. Aside from elegantly wrapping itself across the vehicle, the roof has a perfectly smooth surface with a tailored french seam that allows air to flow over the Dawn silently and seamlessly. Rolls-Royce says the level of quiet that passengers enjoy is on level with the Wraith. Even when it opens or closes, the luxury roof manages to stay silent. Rolls-Royce likens the 22-second closing and opening process to a “Silent Ballet” that drivers can activate up to speeds of 50km/h. When the roof’s down, the Dawn delivers a visual blast of luxurious leather and hand-cut wood that drivers can back up with sound. The Dawn breaks silence with its 16 individually tuned speakers and two bass speakers that are fine-tuned and subtly adjusted with the help of a sensitive microphone that monitors ambient noise. It’s luxury you can enjoy with friends. Rolls-Royce claims the Dawn is greater than the standard 2+2 car configuration that features smaller back seats. “In creating Dawn we have accepted no compromise to the comfort and luxury of four adults who want to travel together in the pinnacle of style,” said Giles Taylor, Director of Design for Rolls-Royce. The Dawn has four separate bucket seats designed to give enough room and comfort to each passenger. It has more than enough power to take its passengers anywhere they want to go and it houses a massive 6.6-litre twin turbo V12 under its hood along with an 8-speed ZF gearbox. With 563 horsepower, the dawn can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in just 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/hr. Drivers can also customize the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever made. Prospective drivers can work directly with dealers or Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke team of expert engineers and craftspeople to make this work of art their own.

contrast. Together, both unite in a harmony of nature and craft, from rough to romance, a beginning and an end to the same treasured tale. A flagship addition to the year’s collection is the aptly named Talisman Wondrous Sphere. Eight concentric white gold rings encircle a striking rough diamond in the centre, forming a movable, articulated sphere. Each ring is scattered with a sequence of rough and polished diamonds in a brilliantly hued spectrum. The sphere’s mobile nature speaks to the journey of discovery, playing with a hypnotic fusion of light and color. The collection’s High Jewellery line is the Talisman’s most feminine extension, an answer to the more masculine medal. Delicate shimmering strands weave motifs of antiquity, dripping in rough stones surrounded with hand-selected round brilliant, and baguette cut diamonds. In contrast, the traditional Talisman medallion emanates a strength of the spirit, remaining close to the talisman’s origin as a spiritual symbol. Four new designs get an infusion of polished baguette-cut diamonds interspersed with colorful rough gems ones.

extensions present bold pieces stamped with a variety of diamond cuts set into an unusual diamond shaped pattern; and a line pairing a gold-framed rough diamond against a polished one on the opposite ends of an earring or an open ring or bracelet to underline their duality and unique interplay. Throughout the collection, various shades of gold accent the colored diamond palette. A new ‘serti poincon’ or ‘hallmark’ setting shows off the rugged edge of rough diamonds to their best advantage, with an antique hand-hammered texture embedding the gold, and hand-raised points lifting the diamond above the surface for light penetration.

De Beers combines the rough diamond’s rugged nature with the shine of polished diamonds in an unexpectedly captivating contrast.

ICONS & LEGENDS

THE GENIUS OF

CARL PETERSSON

AN INTERVIEW WITH A CONCERT PIANIST WHO’S TALENT ON THE KEYBOARD WILL LEAVE YOU SPELLBOUND Q. Your passion for music..where does it come from? A: My interest for music came rather late. In Sweden where I am from there was no possibility to start learning piano directly and I was ‘forced’ to play the recorder first. I was not impressed by that instrument so after the compulsory year I was not much into music at all. But one day when I was about 14 years old I heard a girl perform Liszts ‘Totentanz’ with orchestra,

52

this was a broadcasted competition which I saw at the telly. It took me by surprise as I wasn’t really exposed to this music ever before. I also thought ‘If a girl can play like this then I can too’. I remember I even signed up through high school to try how it is to work at the local symphony orchestra in Helsingborg I where I lived at the time. Of course it was very difficult to really start learning an instrument in your teens but I was very stubborn and managed.

Q. There’s an intensity and fury in your rendition of music. What is it meant to convey? A. When you are a musician it is importance to be your self. My performances should somehow represent me as a person. I am fond of all kinds of contrasts and enjoy trying different things in life and I also try out many things in music. However, being a musician you are also an actor, where you need to spellbind the audience. The only difference is that, as a musician, you are using an instrument to tell us a story, and you need to be convincing. Q. Your particular style of playing the piano.. What is it inspired by? A. I believe that we, as human beings, express ourselves. It does not really matter what we do in life, but that we express ourselves. If you are a mechanic you go after your dream and perhaps build a car which has many years of life put into it. A chef expresses himself with the food he creates. My style of performing comes from the experiences I’ve had in life. All good or bad moments in our lives carves us to who we are. I play this way now, as it reflects me today, when I am 70 years old I will most probably perform rather differently. I believe life does this to you. Q. Of all the places you’ve performed, which one was the most memorable? A. Shanghai Oriental Arts Center. No doubt. It was last year [2015] and it was the first concert of my first Chinese tour. That place will stay with me. In Canada the most memorable concert I did was at the Opera in Orillia, ON, together with the Toronto Concert Orchestra led by Kerry Stratton in 2014. Q. Where do you feel at home most? A. This is a good question. I never really thought of that. At the moment I travel all the time. But if I would to say which cities make me FEEL as if I would be “home”, well, then I’d say Vancouver or Prague. Q. What are your thoughts about Vancouver? A. Vancouver is a true wonder of a city. I feel like being bold, saying that this is perhaps the best city a person could live in. Which is the reason I’m applying for a Canadian work permit. Q. You must have some funny stories to share with us from your performances? A. Well, they are not always funny in the moment they occur. Like once when the piano I was supposed to perform on lost a leg and became a headache for everyone involved. And once my nail somehow managed to break, badly, in the middle of a concert, and I can tell you one thing, it is not convenient to perform on a bloody keyboard with a broken nail. But the show has to go on and I somehow managed to finish the concert. Q. If you could meet any great composer that has been, who would that be? A. I’d say Beethoven. In my own opinion there was no one that developed music as much as he did. I was actually thinking some days ago, that, of all composers I can only think of Beethoven where the common man actually would be able to recognize both the music of a piece, the composer and its

53

title. If I would play the introduction of “Für Elise” or the “Moonlight Sonata” almost everyone would know who wrote it and what it is. Perhaps also his “Fifth Symphony”. You will probably not be able to recognize Chopin, Liszt or even Mozart. Even Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart.

what-not. But it helped and I reached to a point where I can survive on music. So as a person I’d say I am determined, working hard to reach my goals.

Q. What is Carl like as a person?

A. My ultimate dream is to be performing with some of the great orchestras. I am actually reaching there in small steps. Last year I did the Beethoven Choral Fantasy with the Choir of the Czech Philharmonic. It was the inauguration of the Beethoven Festival in Teplice in the Czech Republic. In November I’ll be performing the Helge Evju Piano Concerto which is based on the materials Grieg abandoned for his unfinished piano concerto. I’ll do this with the Buffalo Philharmonic and JoAnn Falletta this November.

A. I am very determined. For example, when I finished my studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark, I had no concerts, I was freshly baked and needed to get out on the market, so to speak. What I did was sending out literally thousands of emails to festivals, record labels, orchestras. Microsoft even blocked my email account with a spam warning. So I opened a new one, continuing. I spent months at the computer, from morning to night. I was not playing the piano at all during this period. No I don’t even want to know how much I spent on international calls, stamps and

54

Q. You’ve achieved so much at a young age… What’s your ultimate dream?

Iconic Italian fashion house, Versace has been known internationally for design that embodies high glamour, artistry, and power.

by Gianni Versace (1946-1997) in 1978 and now run by his sister and artistic director, Donatella Versace, the Milanese maison has dominated international runways and conjured the following of multitudes of fans of its men and women’s fashion for nearly four decades. In 1994, the brand expanded into lines of interior design, home furnishings and accessories with Versace Home. Its first flagship location dedicated to featuring its entire home collection opened in October 2014 in Vancouver’s historical Gas Town at 310 West Cordova Street, joining only three other Versace Home locations in Milan, Beirut and Dubai. Six years after establishing Versace Home, the Versace group launched Palazzo Versace, its first resort concept bearing the symbol of this luxury brand while in 2006 the brand undertook interior design for luxury automobiles, with the Versace Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640, and private jets.

MASTERPIECE

BY ARCHITECT _

RUSSELL

HOLLINGSWORTH _

A premier estate by leading Vancouver architect, Russell Hollingsworth offers both splendor and human-scale proportions to the house hunter who desires quality design but values practical living. In line with classic Hollingsworth style, the home highlights its pristine natural surroundings as an extension of them whilst recognizing the raison d’etre for a residential property.

A

115

116

Nestled within the exclusive enclave of Headland Park in West Vancouver, this 3-storey, 6,100 square foot property has high impact, commanding ocean, city and island views. The home provides the ideal balance for daily living, entertaining guests, and outdoor enjoyment without sacrificing luxury or its one-of-a-kind character. As a portfolio of Hollingsworth’s signature style, the estate facilitates a unique experience with the outdoors. With anodized floor to ceiling windows throughout, the chunky granite rock face seen outdoors is echoed inside the house on several statement walls. The same can be said of its sumptuous wood floors, metal and glass accents. Hollingsworth’s use of indigenous materials allows for a seamless experience of natural and built environments. The interconnectedness of interior and exterior environments is a Hollingsworth staple. One example of the organic principle is found along the staircase wall which runs parallel to its exterior counterpart, a multilevel garden planted amongst the property’s retaining walls. The effect is a cascading flow of greenery that greets you with every step along the staircase, even though you are inside.

117

Another example connects the façade with its overarching location. From the exterior, the home’s floating articulations and flat profiled rooflines enhance the body of water it rests above. There is no dominating presence within the landscape in Hollingsworth’s work, rather a seamless flow of complimentary organic and manufactured parts.

There are three generous levels with one bedroom on each. With recessed lighting, vaulted ceilings, high-end floors and Snaidero custom cabinetry, the home emanates understated luxury while retaining warmth and comfort. Befitting of a property of this stature, there is a 950 square

LONGINES’

REMARKABLE SYNTHESIS OF _

Longines Pulsometer Chronograph

24

S

Since 1832, renowned watchmaker Longines, based in the hamlet of Saint-Imier, Switzerland, has been an iconic presence in the worlds of fine horlogerie and sport – equally dedicated to fostering tradition, performance, and workmanship in both. As official timekeeper for numerous world championships,

starting with an appearance in Athens in 1896, and timing the Olympic Games fourteen times, the brand’s winged hourglass logo has won international trust and a well-deserved reputation for precision. The company also holds a special relationship with the equestrian arena dating back to 1878, sponsoring events such as Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping and Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day among many, and pioneering the Longines Positioning System, an innovative timekeeping and tracking technology.

25

But while the fast-paced setting of competitive sports may be center stage, Longines is not without its softer side – evidenced in its sophisticated range of sharp yet resolutely feminine women’s watches that have graced the wrists of style icons worldwide. And its latest addition, Longines Symphonette, is no exception. Bold and modern, the new collection is ‘an ode to the twenty-first century woman’, a fashion-forward take on the brand’s timeless appeal. The simple oval case, available in steel or exclusive rose gold with or without diamonds, encases a quartz movement, water resistant to 3 bar, atop a sleek mesh steel or black alligator bracelet. Delicate dials come in motherof-pearl, polished black lacquer, or silver flinque, studded with sparkling diamond indexes or inlaid Roman numerals – as fitting for a glam night out as a chic complement to a workday outfit. In stark departure from the Symphonette’s sparkly charm is Longines’ second new release for 2015 that delves into the austere field of medical practice. Taking its cue from a medical instrument from the early 1920s, Longines reinvents a vintage piece with the Pulsometer Chronograph that measures heartbeats as well as time. Based on the original timepiece that was used by medical professionals to calculate a patient’s heart rate, the new pulsometer offers a quicker, more precise way to get an accurate reading after just 30 pulses, indicated on the dial with the chronograph hand. In a nod to the model’s pareddown simplicity, the watch displays painted black Arabic numerals and Breguet-style blue steel hands against a white lacquered dial, with the pulsometric scale standing out in contrasting red. The 40 mm steel case reveals Longines’ exclusive column wheel movement, visible through the transparent back, and a brown leather strap wraps up the classic design.

Longines’ fine collections are available at selected retailers in 140 countries worldwide.

THE MISSION HILL OCULUS

_

M

Mission Hill, established in 1981 by Anthony von Mandl, currently makes the most expensive wine in the Okanagan. Located in West Kelowna, overlooking Okanagan Lake, its setting mirrors the austerity of an Italian monastery.

I reach Ingo Grady, Mission Hill’s wine educator, in a Vancouver taxi just having arrived from Manhattan, where he and von Mandl were launching a new wine. Grady, is an eloquent spokesperson for the winery. When asked about its flagship wine, he doesn’t hesitate. “Oculus is what we get up for in the morning.”

WORDS: KAYLEIGH HALL

132

Designed to age for ten+ years, Oculus is a singular wine considered to be Canada’s “first growth”, an achievement which reflects the winery’s status. The grapes for this wine are hand selected from the von Mandl family’s estate vineyards on the east side of Osoyoos Lake. After a rigorous fermentation and aging process, with only 4% of grapes being selected from the harvest, the wine is already 19 months old by the time it is bottled. It is then aged for another two-three years and finally released after four. The 2011 vintage has been released this year. Next year, the 2012 vintage will be released, and so on. Oculus has been made every year since 1997, with fifteen vintages in total. “The analogy of a luxury brand is correct -- Mission Hill is the living definition a luxury brand of wine. It’s priced to its stature,” says Grady. The current 2011 Oculus released is priced at $125 retail and up to $250 in restaurants. www.missionhillwinery.com

What do you do when you have 35 years experience in the wine industry, been the CEO of Jackson Triggs, and decide to retire? You take what you have learned, hone your knowledge by consulting

the best in the industry who helps you find the best land, study its terroir and you open another winery. The Triggs family, Don, Elaine, and Sara, established Culmina Estate winery in 2006 (the same year Mr. Triggs attempted retirement), as the culmination of a life-long passion for wine. Culmina is a 56-acre, family estate winery composed of 44 micro blocks each averaging 1.23 acres, located in the South Okanagan’s Golden Mile Bench. In consultation with old friend and renowned viticulturist Alain Sutre, Don and Elaine scoured the region for the perfect spot to plant a tour de force vineyard. “We prospected and carried out analysis on 5 sites from Penticton to the US border to find a virgin site with the highest potential for growing icon-quality Bordeaux reds. From there, a year of exhaustive research on the site dictated what we should be growing where, as opposed to simply planting what we ‘wanted’ to grow where.” While conventional vineyards plant 1,296 vines per acre, Culmina planted 2044. The rationale? Increased vine density forces competition between the vines, pushing the root systems deep down into the soil, and in turn, encouraging more terroir to be expressed in the yielding fruit. Culmina has committed to rigourous sustainability efforts, including their having achieved ‘salmon safe accreditation’ in 2014 – one of the first BC wineries to do so. “Passing on sound environmental legacy to our children is of vital importance – from our dryland farming experiment, to the precision irrigation techniques to reduce consumption, and even with the addition of electric cards to our employees, sustainability underscores everything we do at Culmina.” “Everything about Culmina has been dedicated to sustainability and being environmentally responsible. From our micro block farming with intensive soil monitoring to the electric cars, which our employees drive A bottle of Culmina’s “Hypothesis” 2012 sells for $59 retail and up to $150 in restaurants

Poplar Grove was established in 1993 and is perched on the edge of the Naramata Bench. Its stunning tasting room and adjoining restaurant, The Vanilla Pod, offer unparalleled views of Lake Okanagan and Penticton from

an elegant modern building. The winery is an embodiment of the estate’s flagship varietal, The Legacy – its flagship wine. Poplar Grove is a medium sized winery, with wines being made from 100 acres of estate grown fruit in its home vineyard and estate-owned land in Osoyoos. It offers a variety of wines: 5 reds, 3 whites and 1 rose, and select single varietals for its wine club members. “Above all else,” says general manager Jacquie Carlson, “Poplar Grove over delivers on quality.” Its current owner, Dr. Tony Holler, has spared no expense towards increasing quality and production. This large investment was used to update equipment for winemaking. Today, Poplar Grove has a state-of-the-art wine making facility complete with a French Oak barrel program that allows for graceful wine aging. 500 cases of The Legacy are produced each year. They are aged for up to 5 years before release, which means that the estate does the aging for the wine lover. Poplar Grove’s winemaker, Stefan Arnason, has been with the winery for 8 vintages, ensuring consistency in quality. Currently, Poplar Grove is focused on export to China, Japan, Hong Kong and soon US and Europe. THE PAINTED ROCK RED ICON

_

U

Upon retiring at 39 years old, John Skinner turned his attention to establishing his own winery, uncovering a formula in his research that seemed to click. “I looked at

the top wineries in the world and found that the estates only used 25 acres and never grew bigger. Both Petrus in Bordeaux and Harlan Estate in Napa Valley do this and yield only 6500 crates of their finest wines. I thought, ‘if it works for them, why not us?’ “ Painted Rock is situated on a steep bluff of land perched above Skaha Lake, at the south end of Penticton. Purchasing the land in 2004, Skinner transformed the former apricot orchard into a thriving vineyard under the direction of Valerie Tate. Top Bordeaux consultant Alain Sutre was then brought on to oversee the integration of vineyard and winery and direct winemaking.

140

Skinner’s ambitious approach to launch his brand abroad and expand its export market, has garnered interest among other like-minded proprietors. Last spring, Skinner spearheaded a visit of 34 Canadian wineries to visit Canada House in London. Subsequently, Painted Rock and others caught the attention of eminent wine writer, Jancis Robinson which benefited from the international attention that respected critics can conjure by endorsing little known wines. Lionel and Clayton Lorence have represented a very large number of luxury

properties in West Vancouver over the three decades or so that they’ve been in

the luxury real estate business. In this time, we’ve had the opportunity to tour properties

offering extraordinary character and refinement. Such is the story of two estate residences

that I recently toured, which while being divergent in their architectural signature, are

nevertheless exceptionally exquisite offering the would be resident a level of design, comfort and quality that is second to none in the market.

Walking through this spectacular Rockridge Estate one gets the

sqft complemented by more than 6400 sqft of outdoor living

feeling of having arrived at five star luxury resort built on a high

space, with a resort-like pool and an elaborate poolside lounge

perch affording commanding views such as you would expect

mountains that make up the straight of Georgia. The residence is at once a perfect retreat far from the noise and hustle of the city while at the same time being conveniently located in the beautiful community of Rockridge within West Vancouver. This extraordinary and elegant estate was designed & built by the collaborative efforts of design consultants, Johnson & McLeod and Sugden Contracting. A luxurious indoor space of over 8400

Entering through the main foyer, you’re immediately struck by the brilliant positioning of the home, oriented perfectly towards the breathtaking view, as the exquisite interior design and finish draws you into the opulent living space. extensive use of glass. The resulting abundance of natural light highlights the subtle shades of the interior walls contrasting beautifully with the rich Walnut floors. In addition to the exclusive hardwood, imported travertine stone flooring adds to the luxurious experience in this lavish living space. The large kitchen which opens to the adjacent dining space is a Chef’s dream, with generous counter space, custom cabinetry and top of the line appliances. Spectacular views and connectedness with the outdoor lounge make for an entertaining and enjoyable space bringing everyone together. On the upper level you’ll find four bright and spacious bedrooms with particular thought given to utilizing the views from every room. A unique loft lounge area sits atop the two car garage on this level - an artfully designed space and a recent addition to the house, its undeniably one of the highlights of the home. The designers describe it as the ‘birdhouse’, - it’s cheerful and airy with white walls and brick patterns and a uniquely angled roof that gives the room a storybook like character. While the cleverly added bright yellow colour accents and textures, give this room immense visual appeal. Significant thought and effort has gone into making this home perfectly suited for large families and a whole lot of children. It’s a home one would be in to build a lifetime of memories - listening to the sound of the creek below from your bedroom balcony or enjoying poolside parties with friends and family. With generous amount of space, both indoors and outdoors, specially designed two theatre rooms separate for the adults and the kids, ample balcony space with a large pizza oven, and an exercise room alongside a steam/sauna room, this home would heartily accommodate and entertain any large family. This property at 4344 Rockridge is listed for $7,500,000 with Remax Lionel Lorene realty.

MARKETING PLAN

2

Is the home likely going to cater to a family coming from the West Side of Vancouver if the home is situated in West Vancouver or Edgemont Village. If so, proper marketing and advertising vehicles are put in place, not solely depending on the MLS system to drive traffic to your house.

5

Defining a homes target market is the first key identifying objective. Defining this target is crucial when deciding on where to market the home.

SPREADING THE WORD How are we driving viewings / visits to your home, how are we influencing them and their agents (communicating to over 6000 Chinese agents) via email and or through mail communication to the Chinese Agents Real Estate office. Is the buyer coming from the neighbourhood (just around the corner) - if you can target a person who’s not looking through peaking their interests to get that specific person to have a look at what your house offers versus theirs right in your own neighbourhood, this is what needs to happen.

WHO’S BUYING? Is the buyer coming from out of town / overseas (Eastern Canada Beijing and or Europe)? If the Buyer is Chinese, are they a landed resident or a permanent Chinese local resident currently living on the West Side or Richmond.

TARGET INTERESTS

We’re finding that these Buyers have been targeting the North Shore because of its undervalued land value versus the prices over town - again, we need to target them, know what their interests are and capture them as a target, drive visits to your home and not waste critical time.

3

When it comes to marketing a home, I believe that every home is different and therefore deserves to have its own specific marketing plan.

NARROW THE SPECIFICS I find that most approaches in marketing a home are too generic and blanketed so you get the bare minimum and you become another number based on the Agents others listings.

LUXE RESORTS & TRAVEL

A LUXURIOUS & TRANQUIL

_

RETREAT

_

IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Located on a sublime clifftop overlooking the crescent-shaped Playa Grande beach, Amanera is surrounded by verdant jungle and framed by the island’s dramatic Cordillera Septentrional mountain range. The resort will become the first golf-integrated Aman, sited alongside the undulating fairways and challenging greens of the lauded Playa Grande Golf Course, a track distinguished by having the highest number of oceanside holes in the Western hemisphere.

Water is omnipresent and intrinsic in the design of Amanera, which draws its name from the Sanskrit-derived word for ‘peace’ and era, the word for ‘water’ in Taíno, historically spoken by the indigenous people of the Caribbean. The resort is situated on 2,000 acres of virtually untouched land comprised of verdant peaks and lush jungle with centuriesold trees and royal palms stretching across nearly seven miles of continuous Atlantic seacoast on Hispaniola’s northern shore. The surrounding region, meanwhile, is notable for

being both pristine and sparsely populated, offering a variety of scenery that includes starkly beautiful desert areas, dramatic waterfalls and sleepy towns.

flat biodiverse roofs that cultivate green gardens, cool living spaces and further blur the lines between dwellings and jungle. The Casitas appear to be very much part of the landscape, something that has come to define an Aman.

L

The resort, designed by John Heah, sits atop 60-foot cliffs and is set between the beach and golf course amongst landscaped gardens. It offers extensive dining, spa and recreational facilities, and 25 Casitas each demonstrating a raw, organic design that complement the natural setting. Capturing the relaxed essence of the Caribbean with a contemporary flair, each Casita offers beautifully handcrafted living spaces which echo the warmth of the country itself. Natural materials are part of an aesthetic ripe with detail: stone from local quarries, indigenous handmade Aguayo tiles and Dominican art and artifacts. The Casitas all have

Every aspect of Amanera, including the Casitas, has been designed to maximise the property’s extraordinary views. Each of the one-bedroomed Casitas enjoys unobstructed ocean vistas from an expansive terrace, outdoor seating and lounging areas and through floor-to-ceiling windows from the spacious, high-ceilinged living and sleeping areas. Every Casita is accessed via a winding pathway through a private garden and 13 Casitas feature their own 10-metre private swimming pools.

45

46

The two-bedroomed ‘Bay View Casa’ enjoys the resort’s finest cliff-side position with panoramic views of the ocean and Playa Grande beach. A 20-metre infinity swimming pool stretches across an extensive terrace. Magnificent overhanging eaves shade outdoor dining and lounging areas. Shallow steps lead up to the heart of the Casa, the spectacular glass-walled living and dining room. Offering seamless indoor/outdoor living, this central area is open on one side to the ocean and pool, and on the other to a lush private garden, its entrance flanked by twin reflection pools. The bedrooms are situated on either side of the central living area, both offering the same exceptional ocean views and spacious en-suite bathrooms.

At the heart of the resort lies ‘Casa Grande’ constructed in such a way that it appears to ‘float’ above a three-tiered water feature and offers sweeping ocean, golf course and jungle views at every turn. In the centre is the lofty open-air bar and lounge with inviting seating nooks. These overlook infinity-edge waterways which merge with the horizon. A discreet reception, serene library, and cigar bar all branch off the Casa Grande, which also leads to Amanera’s signature restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining areas. Beyond the restaurant, the curved swimming pool cascades down and around the dining areas with daybeds fringing the water’s edge. A separate private dining pavilion is located to one side of the Casa Grande for more intimate functions and events.

Spread over 370 acres, the world-class Playa Grande Golf Course was originally designed by celebrated architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. His son, Rees Jones, an acclaimed designer in his own right and known as the Open Doctor, for his role in sprucing up many recent U.S Open venues, has gloriously revived his father’s legacy with a full renovation of the course. With 10 holes playing directly on ocean cliffs, it stands as the course with the most holes on the ocean in the Western hemisphere. This 7,085-yard course stretches along the coastline and the multiple bays formed by rugged cliffs make each hole – and its views – unique.

“Amanera will embody the true spirit of Aman” said Olivier Jolivet, CEO, Aman. He added “It is the perfect example of how we take an unexpected destination and within it, find the most exceptional and dramatic location to create a sybaritic hideaway unlike any other. Amanera will demonstrate our continued commitment to curating resorts of architectural distinction that harmoniously integrate into the pristine environments they occupy.” Vladislav Doronin, Chairman of the Board of Aman, said, “The launch of Amanera is a clear illustration of brand

progression and represents a number of firsts for Aman; not only is this our first fully-integrated golf resort, but it is one that unusually presents ocean vistas from every hole. This, our first foray into the Dominican Republic, will provide our guests with access, the Aman way, to yet another unique location.” He added “Following on from the successful launch of Aman Tokyo and more recently Amandayan, this is one of a number of forthcoming projects that I know will be well received by our loyal Amanjunkies and I am delighted, along with our new management team, to be in a position to keep their wanderlust sated. Collectively these most recent projects further demonstrate our team’s commitment to

strengthening and safeguarding this iconic brand.” The Dominican Republic’s bucolic north coast, playfully known as the ‘Green Coast’ owing to its lush, wildly varied landscape and its exuberant mix of local culture and history, is home to stretches of virgin rainforest and raw coastline that remain relatively uncrowded and unspoiled—awaiting exploration by a new generation of pioneers. There’s a vibrant new energy flowing in the West Vancouver real estate scene, and D.J. Denner is positioning himself to be at the forefront of it all. Denner, of West Vancouver’s Angell Hasman & Associates, is an integral part of that new, positive

force, with his infectious passion for not just the business side of real estate—but for the people and community that make West Vancouver thrive. I had the opportunity to sit with D.J., Here’s how our conversation went…

ago, a close friend’s father told me that I had a unique ability to understand people… that’s when I realized that whatever I did, I had to do it with, and for, people. So I take that spirit now into every aspect of my career today. This isn’t just a Real Estate business for me… It’s a people business. I connect sellers with buyers and I drive a lot of energy and passion from making that connection work. Where does your work ethic and business sense come from? My family. My grandfather was an incredible businessman. I drive a lot of inspiration from him and I think his values were passed down to me. I was also fortunate to grow up with amazing parents; a mother who happened to be a gifted REALTOR and father who built beautiful homes… Real Estate is definitely in my blood. What has your experience been like at Angell Hasman? My experience at Angell Hasman & Associates has been nothing short of first-class. The partners have done an incredible job of creating a work environment that fosters a culture of partnership between all its agents. There’s an amazing energy that comes with working in a group comprised of the city’s top professionals. I couldn’t imagine conducting my business anywhere else. People ask me quite often, “What’s your biggest success?” and I think they’re looking for an answer like a number, but without a doubt my biggest success in this business is the relationships I’ve built with the community and with my fellow realtors. Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support. Do you have any advice for new Realtors just starting out? Yes. Seek a mentor! There is no better way to learn how to succeed in this business than from working with someone who already has the formula. I was incredibly fortunate to have had Malcolm Hasman as mine. Those years spent co-listing together were my equivalent to a Masters in Real Estate... Malcolm played an instrumental part in helping to sharpen my skill sets and I’ll always be grateful for his guidance. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? Professionally, I look forward to continuing to create a reputation built on hard work, client advocacy, sound advice and an adherence for delivering better than expected results. Personally, I have a house here in West Vancouver that I dream to one day call home. I had the pleasure of selling it to a great local family a few summer’s ago and the day I handed them the keys we joked that one day I would be back for it... I still wake up early every morning with that home in mind – so I do see myself there with a family. The excitement of achieving this goal along with my love for what I do is what drives me day to day.

ULTRA-LUXE

VANCOUVER MEETS

LA GLAM _ 665 GREENWOOD _ LOCATED IN BRITISH PROPERTIES

It takes an unconventional mind to break the mold of the standard and I bring to life a concept as extraordinary as the artist’s vision itself. And if anyone knows how extraordinary is done, it’s Mahdi Heidari – the globetrotting Vancouver builder whose unprecedented British Properties project, 665 Greenwood Road, has the industry abuzz. In a bold move away from tradition, Heidari reinvents the West Vancouver home in daringly modern California style while still respecting its authentic local character; an ultra-luxe Vancouver-meetsLA glam that exemplifies the designer’s uncompromising perfectionism.

Sprawled across a lush 16,000 square feet in one of Vancouver’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, the spectacular three-level residence is a marvel of modernism, overlooking spellbinding vistas of the city, ocean, and mountains from Mt. Baker to Vancouver Island – the stunning natural setting that first drew Heidari to the city. The soaring, sloped roofs, geometric lines, and abundant glass and cedar all speak to unmistakable Pacific Northwest contemporary flair. Walk through the two-storey entrance, and you’re transported down the coast, to the world of warm California beaches and Hollywood shine. A formal living and dining room stretch out in a sparkling expanse of Carrera marble, flanked by a sleek gourmet kitchen, and a second Chinese kitchen tucked off to the side. A temperature controlled glass-encased wine chamber shows off vintages in all their glory, and a family media room invites easy evenings. Wrapped around the entire main floor, floor-to-ceiling windows open up to summer terraces for seamless indooroutdoor transitions. On the lower level, leisure opportunities abound, with a billiard room punctuated by a one-of-a-kind glowing onyx wet bar, a casino room, and home theatre. An exercise room and health spa offer poolside rejuvenation. Seven bedroom suites, including a private nanny suite, fit flexible needs. The master suite, set on the main floor and equipped with a marble-clad bathroom, opens up to a fireplace-lit sitting area and into a personal poolside terrace, creating a privateresort ambience. Outside, gardens and walk-out decks line the swimming pool and cabana, complete for warm-weather entertaining with a covered lounge and a unique sunken sitting area centered around a fire pit. Immaculate landscaping, intimate lighting and water features, and a putting green complete the experience. Meticulously thought through and impeccably refined, Heidari’s masterpiece is a testament to his principle of no detail being too small, and a brick-and-mortar manifest of his creative spirit. This property was built by C2C Construction Inc. and listed by DJ Denner of Angel Hasman & Associates Realty for $9,880,000.

A CONVERSATION WITH ARTIST & BUILDER _

MAHDI HEIDARI _ adding a touch of art & perfection

Tell us how you got started in building. When I was growing up, I had four brothers, and we shared a bicycle. I was the mechanic for that bicycle. Every time it broke, I was the one to fix it. As a teenager, I got involved in construction with my dad; he was a builder in Iran. From there, I moved to Netherlands, and then to Canada, and began studying electrical engineering in Montreal In university, I had a couple of friends whose families were builders, and I went to job sites and looked around. At some point, it sparked in my mind that that’s what I wanted to do. Later on, I took a few courses, and then just took a risk and bought my first property in West Vancouver in 2010. What type of home was it? It was a little smaller, around 4000 square feet. I approached a builder and asked to work under his supervision. I didn’t want to do it alone for the first time. We worked together, and I built up that confidence, and took pages of notes on ways to do things properly, so that for the next project, I could do it on my own. What is your design philosophy? What design styles are you more drawn to – modern, traditional? You can create something beautiful with both, and I don’t limit myself. This home is very modern and Californian, but my next project may be more traditional West Coast, with some modern elements. This property is spectacular; how did you approach the building? One thing that’s in my nature is I don’t like to follow others; I like to create my own path and learn from my own experience, to do something new and different, and this is what I did with Greenwood. I am a very detailed person. If I do something, I have to do it right. A lot of builders try to cut corners, and I wanted to prove you don’t need to; you can create something beautiful but still have it be profitable and functional. You’ve been on quite a journey: from Iran, to Netherlands, to Montreal, now you’re over here. Is there a place that particularly speaks to you? I love the West Coast, and I really like this city. I love nature and I’m an outdoors person. I first came out here for a visit in 2004 and just fell in love with the nature.

McLAREN

TECHNOLOGY CENTRE _ AN IMMACULATE FACILITY WITH A DYNAMIC & FUTURISTIC DESIGN WORDS: KATE MISSINE

126

I

In 1951, Bruce McLaren, aged 14, entered a hill climb in his New Zealand hometown, seated behind the wheel of a 1929 Austin 7 Ulster. Three years later, he won his first race; and in 1959, joined the Cooper Formula 1 team to become that year, at only 22, the world’s youngest

driver

to ever win the Grand Prix.

127

Over 60 years later, Amanda McLaren, Bruce’s daughter, stands as the ambassador of the McLaren brand – a name that conquered the racing arena and rose to the top of the fastest and best, her father’s legacy. The company is now in the hands of CEO Ron Dennis, who took the reins in 1980 following Bruce McLaren’s tragic crash on a training circuit. But Bruce’s sportsmanship spirit and his pursuit of victory and excellence in everything from the racetrack to the smallest mechanical detail are

128

still present at the McLaren headquarters’ every turn; his dedication to engineering and love of the racing realm woven inextricably into the company’s mission and day-to-day operation. Case in point, the headquarters itself: the McLaren Technology Center, to be precise, or MTC, an all-new facility that opened its doors in 2004. Reminiscent from a bird’s-eye view of a giant yin-yang shape, a crystalline lake wraps around a futuristic, curved

glass structure, forming a perfect circle. More than a head office or production center, the 57,000 square feet space, housing over 1,500 talented employees, is the heart of the McLaren family; a tribute to the brand’s past and a vision of its future. The tech innovation and engineering precision of McLaren racecars permeates every aspect of their birthplace. The azure lake outside the windows is not just for scenery; its role is to dissipate heat generated by the on-site, 3-megawatt wind tunnel. Even the waterfall is not merely decorative, serving to aerate the water to prevent algae build-up. Inside, everything is geared up to perfect the speedy machines: state-of-the-art racing simulators, Formula 1 race bays, design studios and labs, where the Formula 1 engineering team is said to add a new

part to their cars every 17 minutes. In the adjacent production center, the hands-on magic takes place as McLaren road cars are built precisely by hand. Greeting visitors at the entrance is the “boulevard”: a line-up of Formula 1 legends that immortalizes McLaren’s history and triumphs, including Bruce’s very first Austin Ulster. And McLaren has plenty of triumphs to celebrate. The F1 GTR, for instance, that conquered Le Mans in 1995; or the revolutionary carbon monocoque, first of its kind, that initially took 3,000 hours to make. Today, it takes only four hours to produce the 650S carbon MonoCell. It’s one of the many testaments to the company’s incredible technological progress and unyielding sense of adventure and challenge. Bruce McLaren would be proud.

DESIGN TOWER

ULTRA LUXURY LIVING IN SUNNY ISLES BEACH

MIAMI WORDS: KATE MISSINE

142

As most Porsche fans would attest, if you’re the lucky owner of one (or several), the last thing you want is to be separated from your precious plaything by layers upon layers of concrete, wasting valuable time navigating networks of hallways, parkades, and endless elevator waits to get to the driver seat. Well, the condo-dwelling motorists of Miami can now rejoice as the design team behind the iconic machine hits real estate – delivering your ride right to your door, along with allout indulgence, in the much-anticipated Porsche Design Tower ultra-luxury living project.

A

A monumental presence on the skyline of Sunny Isles Beach, the Porsche Design Tower Miami, a venture of the Porsche Design team and developer Dezer Development, is on its way to becoming an instant landmark, rising as one of the town’s tallest buildings at 60 stories. “It is an enormous milestone for Porsche Design,” said Dr. Christian Kurtzke, CEO & President of the Porsche Design Group at a project luncheon. For an automaker renowned for its forward thinking, it’s only natural that even in an all-new category, Porsche’s focal innovation would revolve around bringing together cars and their owners – quite literally. Christened ‘The Dezervator’, the building’s showpiece is a revolutionary automated elevator system that delivers your vehicle

directly to your unit door, allowing you to get in and out without ever having to step foot outside. “It has not only brought parking technology to a next stage of evolution, it has re-shaped condominium living, with the ability to have your vehicle literally at your front door,” said Ed Fallin, vice president of Coastal Construction, the tower’s building contractor. A number of additional uniquely exclusive amenities separate the Tower from other upscale condominiums, including plunge pools and outdoor kitchens equipping almost every unit balcony for warm-weather entertainment, a Miami first. Residents can rejuvenate in a top-of-the-line spa complete with Vichy showers, or soak in an oversized tub on the Sunset Terrace. In keeping with Porsche’s adrenaline-driven theme, multi-purpose clubrooms come equipped with a media theatre and game room featuring racing stimulators. A ‘Car Concierge’ will also be on-site to offer maintenance and cleaning services for residents’ vehicles. Porsche Design Tower Miami residences start at $6.3 million, and go up to $32.5 million. Only eight units remain available, including the four-storey penthouse spanning 16,915 square feet. The tower will become ready for occupancy in the second quarter of 2016.

LUXE JEWELLERY & WATCHES

AN ANECDOTAL TALE

FROM THE BRITISH HISTORY OF _

ARNOLD & SON

_

WATCHMAKERS John Arnold was born in Cornwall in 1736. His father was a watchmaker and his uncle a gunsmith, which probably explains his early interest in precision engineering and metalwork. A talented craftsman and scholar, he left England for the Netherlands at the age of 19 after completing his apprenticeship to hone his watchmaking skills. He returned two years later speaking excellent German, which stood him in good stead later at the court of George III, and had established himself as a watchmaker of repute in London’s Strand by his midtwenties. Anne, Queen of Great Britain, who died in 1714, left no Protestant heir apparent to the throne, as stipulated in the English Act of Settlement of 1701. As a result, advisers resorted to the Queen’s family tree and George, prince-elector of Hanover, succeeded her as monarch. George I and his wife spoke only German. Their son, George Augustus, who became George II of Great Britain in 1727, was raised and married in Germany. In other words, when he died in 1760 and his grandson, George III, ascended the throne, German was the chief language spoken at the English court. George III, no doubt aware that a monarch should respect the customs of his country, began to learn

English. Nevertheless, in 1761 he married Duchess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who had been born and spent her life in Germany. Fortunately, John Arnold spoke German, a skill acquired when he moved to the Netherlands for two years at the age of 19. It would certainly have helped him in 1764, when he was summoned to meet the king and present him with an exceptional timepiece. The meeting was a great success, as documented by this account: “Arnold is also celebrated for the manufacture of the smallest repeating-watch ever known; it was made for his majesty George III, to whom it was presented on his birth-day, the 4th of June 1764. Although less than six-tenths of an inch in diameter, it was perfect in all its parts, repeated the hours, quarters and half-quarters, and contained the first ruby cylinder ever made. [...] The king was so much pleased with this rare specimen of mechanical skill, that he presented Mr. Arnold with 500 guineas; and the emperor of Russia afterwards offered Mr. Arnold 1000 guineas for a duplicate of it, which he declined.” 1 The ruby cylinder found in this repeating watch was so remarkable that the King - himself a connoisseur of horology - asked Arnold to make him a second so that he could admire it. After this favourable reception, John Arnold’s career took off. He was renowned for his complicated watches, including minute repeaters and calendar watches, and a clientele of rich European aristocrats thronged to his workshop on St. James’s Street in London. He employed the city’s best craftspeople: James and Mary Reasey of Soho supplied sumptuously decorated watch cases of enamel and gold guilloché, and James Drury of Islington made him gongs in the best alloys for his repeating watches. Despite this success, John Arnold was not content to manufacture beautiful watches alone. Encouraged by George III himself, he set about solving the problem of calculating longitude using a chronometer and, from 1770 onwards, dedicated himself to this task entirely.
