ASTON MARTIN ENTERS THE YACHTING WORLD WITH THE SLEEK & BEAUTIFUL
AM37 SPEEDBOAT
42
The sleek and beautiful 37-foot Aston Martin AM37 powerboat made its world debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, marking the luxury British brand’s entry into the nautical world. The new day-cruiser is offered in two versions with the AM37S expected to reach speeds of 50 knots.
overnight berth by transforming the table into a comfortable bed. The cabin is well appointed with mood lighting and air-conditioning. With a refrigerator, microwave oven and coffee machine - and a lavatory on board, absolute comfort is guaranteed. Crafted from the finest leathers, elegantly laid out rear seating is available for up to eight people.
Aston Martin’s EVP & Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman and his design team collaborated closely with naval architect Mulder Design to ensure every element of the project was carefully considered. Sharing creative expertise and specialist skills, Quintessence Yachts engineered the Aston Martin design into an innovative powerboat for the yachting world. Reichman commented: “AM37 is a pure translation of the Aston Martin DNA into an entirely new maritime concept. The powerboat reflects our values in terms of power, beauty and soul. The most important attribute for Aston Martin is the design language and proportion, we have transferred this DNA into AM37 - a striking boat with fantastic proportion and elegance.”
The exterior of AM37 features dynamic proportions in a design that is simple, yet immaculately executed. The boat is set apart by the attention to detail in every element of its design. The wraparound windscreen has been created from a single piece of sculpted glass fluidly draped over the AM37’s foredeck. With extreme double curvature it sets a new industry standard. Sliding deck technology allows owners to cover the cockpit of the boat completely at the touch of a button. The three lightweight carbon panels, operated by the AM37 key, fold under the aft deck when the cockpit is uncovered. An electro-hydraulic carbon fibre bimini top is stowed under the engine hatch when not in use and, extending from the aft deck, a swim platform allows for easy access to the water.

The Italian and the French brand have come together for the first time to promote a vision of dynamic and timeless elegance. The objective of Giorgio Armani and Bugatti is to offer their customers products that are distinguished by top-quality materials and the skill evident in their creation. The Giorgio Armani for Bugatti capsule collection is made for a sophisticated man who constantly seeks out exclusive luxury. “It was very natural to come together with Bugatti. We both worship things that are made well, made to last, created out of the best materials. The capsule condenses this encounter in a series of clothes and accessories designed to be worn by men who only look for the best and who live an active and dynamic lifestyle” , said Giorgio Armani. “Cooperation with Giorgio Armani is a great honour for us,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “When one of the most influential and highly recognised fashion and lifestyle brands and the most exclusive super sports car brand in the world, which has its roots in art and design, join forces, this is an unusual, exciting and inspiring project. The result is an extremely well-made combination of the style and perfection of Giorgio Armani and the Bugatti brand DNA.” Accessories and garments in the capsule collection, launching for autumn/winter 2016-2017, feature details that reference the iconic motifs of the Bugatti brand. The horseshoe-shaped emblem on the front of the cars is seen on pendants for bags, while Bugatti’s brand

colour blue appears on inner linings of bags, in interior pockets and on the treads and insoles of footwear. The palette, focused on the three stylish and timeless colours of cognac, army green and blue, is a recurring element of the collection. The highlight of the accessories is an elegant briefcase in soft calfskin, made entirely by hand, with a convenient front pocket; there is also an exquisite version of this piece in lined matte crocodile suede, tactile and luxurious in Bugatti blue. In addition, there is a more roomy weekend bag, while small leather goods, available in calfskin or crocodile skin, include belts, wallets, iPad cases, and beauty cases featuring a prominent zip closure. Clothing includes a coat and blouson jacket in refined double cashmere, superfine cashmere sweaters, a leather jacket with raised collar and concealed hood, as well as treated denim jeans that look as soft as velvet, thanks to their handmade flocking. The offering is rounded off with calfskin sneakers with crocodile details, which have a blue interior and a Giorgio Armani for Bugatti label, a sports driver blazer in crocodile skin, available in cognac and army green, and a cap in double cashmere cloth with trim in Bugatti blue. Garments and accessories are manufactured in limited editions and numbered, and display the special logo: Giorgio Armani for Bugatti.

ICONS & LEGENDS
THE LEGEND OF
LOUIS CHIRON Getting to know the man after whom Bugatti named it’s most extreme supercar, the Bugatti Chiron
46
L
Louis Alexandre Chiron was born in Monte Carlo on August 3, 1899. The Monegasque was one of the most successful racing drivers
of his era. No other driver is so closely connected with the name of Bugatti and no other achieved such countless successes with racing cars from Alsace. During his career, he drove vehicles of many brands but he spent the most significant years of his career in the cockpit of a Bugatti. Born the son of the “maître d’” at the Hôtel de Paris in Monaco, Chiron lost his mother at a very early age and spent much of his childhood with his grandfather, a vintner from Provence. by his benefactress’s chauffeur. In the First World War, his driving ability helped him to become a chauffeur to the general staff, driving military leaders such as Pétain and Foch at the headquarters of the French army.
In 1928, the 29-year-old became the number one driver in the Bugatti works team. Driving the Type 35C, he won a dozen races at venues such as Rome, Reims and San Sebastian as well as the European Grand Prix in Monza.

LUXE EVENTS & CATERING
THERE’S A NEW SENSATION!
DESIGN TO DINE FOOD ENTERTAINERS ARE MAKING WAVES AROUND TOWN WITH
LUXE CUISINE
Q: What’s the most interesting/extreme thing you do? Alison: I have come to realize that I really like putting myself in situations that make me uncomfortable and fuel some butterflies in my stomach. Recently, I put forth the effort to compete on an international culinary stage for a chef competition sponsored by San Pellegrino. Creating a signature dish, competing against established classically trained fine dining chefs and having my dish judged live on stage had me feeling pretty nervous! Being able to perform and work through those nerves is a really cool feeling and to have the audience say you seemed as cool as a cucumber felt pretty awesome! Secondly, when Logan and I started Design to Dine we had to get creative with how we were going to start to make a name for ourselves. For a year we would bake up some of our signature rosemary focaccia bread and knock on residential doors where we thought our clients might be. On days when I was on my own, a lot of times I would sit in the car for 20 minutes trying to pull myself out and up the driveway. Nervous, scared, confident, excited, sad, offended and grateful – you name it I felt it! Door to door sales is one of the best experiences I ever had to kick start Design to Dine and the people that I met are some of my best clients to date! Q: What’s your most popular Design-to-Dine preparations? Alison: At almost every event you will find our signature rosemary focaccia. This bread started our relationship with clients and is typically requested to have a presence! I will jump at any opportunity to incorporate seafood into my menus. Mussels, clams, prawns lend themselves to an array of opportunity with different flavour profiles. One client was having a summer backyard dinner with friends visiting from out of town. I designed a poached and seared halibut with coconut, lemongrass and kaffir lime, bamboo rice and sautéed greens and wasabi salt. It was a hit! When the plates are clean at the end of a meal, I huge smile on my face solidifies that a recipe has passed the ultimate Design to Dine test. Q: The food appears to be of a gourmet quality. tell us about that. Is it fine dining you offer?
48
Alison: Fine dining is what Design to Dine offers. Fine dining to me is about the experience and interactions amongst guests and with the dishes being prepared. Ingredients have always been at the forefront of designing and creating menus. Telling the story of how a dish came to be always included my excitement for sharing about the ingredient choices. I design custom menus for my clients based on who they are and what style of menu will have tem excited with anticipation leading up to the food experience. There is an incredible feeling of pride and satisfaction having something designed just for you – we offer that experience to all of our clients Q: How would you describe your cuisine? West coast? Alison: My cuisine is inspired by people. My process of designing menus and creating recipes comes from learning about my client’s experiences and how I can play on those to create the most memorable food experience for them. Living on the West Coast plays a significant role on how I design recipes. I have access to some of the most sought after ingredients in the world. I take a lot of inspiration of preparation techniques and service styles from a variety of cultures and cuisines from around the world. I am drawn to cultures that are passionate about sharing, inclusiveness and interaction during dining experiences. Q: Is there any professional training behind it? Alison: When I first started thinking about cooking professionally, I thought I was limited by my formal training. Those were just stories that were blocking me from really unlocking my true talents. Like any areas of interest whether a hobby or a career, you grow and learn based on the time and efforts that you put in to be the best at what you do. Research was a scary word in academia for me, but when it comes to food, you literally have to pull me away from books, markets, documentaries or related films. I never stop learning and I never stop searching for my next culinary challenge! Q: Who is your cuisine guru or source of inspiration? Alison: I would be hard for me to put one or two names down for my source of inspiration. As I grow, these people have
changed very much. When I was younger, I really loved Trish Magwood on her show Party Dish. To me, she had my dream job. Meeting clients, creating menus, featuring local vendors, and preparing the food and décor with a small team opened my eyes and made me fall in love with the industry! I grew up watching personalities like Emeril, Christine Cushing, Mario Batali and the list goes on. These chefs inspired me because they were out there living their passion and broadcasting it to the world! Alternatively, I am also extremely inspired by the amazing independent “hole in the wall” restaurants in the urban cities I have lived in. So much comfort and history behind some of the dishes being served from age old family recipes. Sharing their food traditions and surviving in a city with ever changing culinary landscapes is really impressive and inspiring.
Q: What drew you to this business? Alison: Enjoying the experience of food was an idea that was introduced to me by my parents at a very young age. I always felt safe, comfortable and confident working in the kitchen at home with my parents and grandparents. I always knew that I was meant to do something that required creativity and style. Cooking for people has this ability for them to really get to know who you are and likewise show that you really care about them and their mission for their event. I love meeting people and feel my true self in a big group of people connecting, celebrating and sharing a memory together. Q: What has been your biggest challenge so far? Alison: My biggest challenge so far has been missing out on some important milestones in my family’s lives. Living in different places across the country has been
49
a tough to be there for my sisters, parents, and friends during exciting and challenging times in their lives. I am so grateful that my whole family has been so supportive of my goals and mission with Design to Dine and that they inspire me to keep pushing and growing everyday. Q: Why Vancouver? What’s unique and special about this city? Alison: 5 years ago, I was extremely fortunate that my boyfriend Logan decided to test out Vancouver and pursue moving out here for work. Once I was settled in the city, I could see what potential there was here to grow a specialty business. There is something magical about Vancouver whether it be the landscape, the people or the amazing international businesses that were homegrown in this city. I find Vancouver is open to opportunity if presented in a way that is valuable and unique to what is already going on. Q: What have you learnt about what Vancouverites want? The majority of our clients are in and out of Vancouver on a regular basis. They live extremely busy lives and schedules are packed day in and out. Upon arrival into the city, knowing they have a
reliable community and network to come home to is a good feeling for anyone. So far, our success has been really getting to know and understand who our clients are and what types of services they require to fit in with their schedules and lifestyle. Our clients truly value spending and sharing their available time with those that are closest to them, their friends and family. We can’t speak for all Vancouverites because not everyone is our client, but what we do know about our clients is that at the end of the day they trust us to represent them, their event, their guests and help to create long lasting memorable experiences. We go through every effort to make sure that our clients are treated as guests at their own event Q: What’s next in store in the business? What’s your mission? Alison: I have always wanted to have a space where I can entertain. Having a group to come into my space where they can embark on a one time only experience. A custom menu, entertainment,
50
cocktails, wine pairings that only they can experience with their guests in that moment. The space would function as a place for our clients to entertain their guests outside of their home but to have the ability to not loose the intimate feeling that is created in your home. The back end would service as our production kitchen to continue to grow the special events catering side of Design to Dine. I see a lot of opportunity in West Vancouver to offer this kind of luxury experience. Q: Who is your primary client? Where do you see your growth taking place? In which sector? Alison: Our clients have a great appreciation for the opportunities in love and life to celebrate. Our first year of business was really connected to private residential clients. Smaller groups of 6-50 guests for highly customized dinner or cocktail receptions in an intimate setting with tailored service. We have really focused on offering this same level of service to larger corporate clients and larger wedding celebrations. We have found great growth in successfully merging into the luxury automotive industry helping to highlight specific brands through menu design and tailored service. Logan and I see Design to Dine working alongside
luxury brands around Vancouver where we can work to integrate a highly customized food experiences inline with the particular brand’s identity. Q: Who is the creative mind behind ‘Design to Dine? Alison: I have to say that there are two creative minds behind Design to Dine. My partner Logan is as much a part of the creative event design and process as I am in the kitchen. With our client’s events, we approach everything from food, attire, florals, bar and ambience from a design based perspective. My specialty is food and plating. Logan has a unique background and perspective coming into this industry from training as a civil engineer. Logan plans, schedules, calculates, constructs and executes the magic that is directly seen and experienced by guests upon their time at the event. Q: What is your favourite part of what you do?
Alison: There are so many aspects of what I do that I love. I meet new people everyday and learn how I can design an amazing experience for them through food. I get to design menus, create custom recipes and shop at my favorite food vendors. I have the opportunity to cook in some of the most beautiful kitchens and create works of art for my clients. I have talked to some of the most amazing business leaders in this city and had the opportunity to share my passion with them and their closest friends and family. Most of all, I have this amazing opportunity to share this journey with my partner Logan and watch him shine and grow everyday. Q: We’ve heard you talk about the ‘Alison Ramage experience’… How would you describe that? Alison: The Alison Ramage experience… well I don’t know if I have officially coined that phrase but perhaps I can shed some light on what that means. Even before the idea of Design to Dine, I really wanted to change the expectation for people what food can be at an event. It is important for me that my clients are confident that the food is
together. We really enjoy being at our client’s events as we host them as well. We treat them as if they were our own events and tailor our service accordingly. Being at an event balances our work and personal life as we get to surround ourselves by amazing people while enjoying a wonderful experience. Moments like these are always a lot of fun, and you never know who you are going to meet. Q: How is Alison Ramage to work with? Logan: Always something new and exciting! Not to say challenges do not come hand in hand with all that is new and exciting. We have two very complimenting and drastically different skill sets which allow us to view projects, people, events, tasks and everything in between differently and from different perspectives – which is amazing. We are both able to shed light from another view on a different way to solve a problem. Alison has also really opened up my eyes and given me great appreciation for the value in being able to connect with other people. I learn a lot from her each and every day. Alison has the welcoming, personable and warming personality and attitude to bond and connect with anyone from the second she meets them. I’ve witnessed this time and time again from her offering fresh baked loaves of bread to a local homeless man out of the kindness of her heart, to Jim Treliving telling her that “Any time you need an endorsement just let me know” after serving his family a celebratory dinner. Q: What was childhood like for you? Logan: As a child growing up I was never the one that regularly attended the parties and social gatherings, I was mostly caught up in my own personal hobbies and sports. Also while growing up, I always found myself extremely passionate and creative when working on projects that interested me. I would invest hours upon hours jumping from one passion project to the next. This once led me to producing a short film (although I had no experience in film making) that landed my film in the Banff Mountain Film Festival and toured the entire globe. Now Design to Dine is my passion, and I find that I am able to express my creativity in being able to pursue growth with the company and Alison, and connect with new and exciting people. Now I find myself attending large social gatherings and special events, and really enjoy them as it is something that I missed out on when I was young. There is nothing better than being amongst people celebrating and having a wonderful time, that’s when personalities really shine, and you can connect with people on a very personal level.
going to be outstanding, the service perfectly tailored to the style of event and that they can trust me and my team to take care of them as if this were our own celebration. I inspire people to get together more often, connect even when life is busy and let loose once in a while and enjoy down time in a meaningful way. Q: On a more personal front... how do you balance work life and personal life? Alison: To be honest, it is not always easy, but we are getting better at it! We both have our passions and hobbies outside of Design to Dine, but through business relationships it has been relatively easy to meet clients and other industry professionals that share those same passions. A lot of our clients and team members have become good friends of ours while sharing our same passions. Getting out into the city or out to the mountains with them is always a treat and only helps grow our friendships
of choice today?
Q: Does it have anything to do with your career
Logan: Absolutely. As a creative individual I always allowed my passion to lead me towards an outlet where I can express myself. Unfortunately, when employed in the engineering and construction management sector, I was never able to expand my creativity, express myself, and connect with people on a personal level. After pursuing to grow Design to Dine, I was able to jump in with two feet full time 2 years later. I am extremely passionate about growing Design to Dine, supporting what Alison and I as an entrepreneurial couple have to show the world. Design to Dine has provided us with an outreach and the leverage to try new and exciting things while meeting new and exciting people in the process. This fuels our passion and gives us the energy to grow Design to Dine and enjoy the journey. www.designtodine.com

Opening his first restaurant and Calgary’s premiere oyster bar, Cannery Row, in 1981 at the young age of 29, was the restaurateur’s first step towards building a legend. “I like opening businesses! later, Lindsay turned west, opening iconic Monk McQueens in Vancouver’s False Creek three weeks before the 1986 Expo. open-ocean needs, there are expandable balconies on both sides that add 100 square metres to the sprawling deck. This massive area is replicated in the two decks below as the interior space covers the full length of the bridge deck. A cascade of windows flows down from the sides of the yacht to give the lower decks a panoramic view of the ocean. This unique design breaks from the traditional wedding-cake structure of older yachts. The Zen superyacht is the first of its kind. Its designers, Henk de Vries and Sander Sino combined their decades of experience in the yachting world to redefine what a yacht is in the 21st century.

The Zen concentrates the guest spaces in two luxurious decks crafted with dark wood, chenille fabrics, Dull silk carpets and bronze. The owner stateroom and VIP staterooms are surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass facades that provide a flood of daylight and an all-encompassing view of the ocean. The lounge and dining area on the bridge deck also provide a slanting 360-degree glass facade, but adds an overhang for added protection and intimacy. The Zen superyacht is designed for relaxation and also hosts a spacious gym and spa on the main deck. The glass facades in these areas can be opened and expanded into balconies to provide guests with fresh ocean breeze while they work out in the state-of-the-art gym. The Zen superyacht is ready to be built immediately and offers capacity of 10-12 people with one owner’s stateroom and 4 up to four VIP Cabins as well crew capacity for up to 25 crewmembers. Guests can watch the captain and crew’s maneuvers in the innovative wheelhouse with a dual steering arrangement. The Zen is an experience, a voyage, a personal slice of floating paradise and it’s available now. sinot.com

into real estate was relatively straightforward.
I’ve been monitoring your career over the past few years from a distance and really wanted to interview you to find out more on how you’ve been able to make such an impact on the real estate market in both West Vancouver and Edgemont Village. DEREK: I appreciate the compliment. For me, it has been what I had been doing in other various strategic executive positions prior to applying it to the luxury real estate category.
SAM: Straightforward how? DEREK: I simply took the same idea, as if each individual home was its own individual brand. Each home is so very different; target audience, family versus down-sizer, West Side buyer versus overseas international buyer, Richmond Chinese moving to join their friends in West Vancouver….so I personally positioned my own overall strategic platform as ‘EVERY HOME

When I speak of a marketign plan... I’m talking about a serious integrated geo-targeted marketing approach that will interact with people that are looking for homes and people that might NOT be looking for homes. It’s about having a consumer come across a piece of advertising that intrigues them to consider visiting your home that’s for sale. That’s the point! I’ll give you a few examples without giving away everything for other Agents to copy (which they have a little... which is good, as I truly believe that competition is good!). I’ve designed a 12 page brochure. Inside the brochure there are pictures of the house, benefits and descriptions of the house on a separate page (professionally and creatively designed to make an impact), 3D floor plans, neighbourhood highlights to engage people from other walks of life and to give familiarity. So ... a number of things here. First - the brochure itself; Because of the style and the quality (the cost is $10/each), they find their way into peoples’ hands because they are intriguing. If you’re going to an open house or seeing houses with a REALTOR® and you get a brochure that stands out amongst the rest, then my brochure and home has the advantage of resonating more with a potential buyer. To go further, if I’m selling a house over $4 million in West Vancouver, then I’m trying to get our brochures into other peoples’ hands who are selling for over $6 million because those $6 million sellers might consider buying the $4 million house.
with the brochures. I saw you in Ambleside a few months back doing a video across from the Crema Coffee Shop - what was that all about?
DEREK: Hahaha. I was filming a video for 968 Wavertree in Edgemont Village. The videos I’ve been creating have been more like stories recently. It’s NOT photos with the photos simply moving to create a motion-like video like most approaches that others are doing. I feel videos need to have an idea ... again that’s the point! Something creative, something different, something intriguing for people to remember. For that video, the idea was to feature a $4.5 million house in Edgemont but we were shooting across from Crema. Many West Vancouver families have been shopping for homes in Edgemont, more so in the past 3-4 years, and even more increasingly in the past 18 months. The value of new homes in Edgemont are so attractive as the

minutes away in Edgemont Village. I thought it was a great point to capture that would resonate with the target market in West Vancouver. The video was created to give the sense of ease within the two communities that border each other.
I have people all the time say that I saw that video you did for 910 Leovista or I loved the architect’s voice-over you did with Lisa Bovell and Matt Mcleod for 3681 Sunset Lane. Any person that says higher end, entertaining real estate videos don’t work,

true marketing approach.
SAM: A few weeks ago, I visited an open house you were conducting. The crowd had a mixture of local buyers and what seemed to be International buyers. Chinese to be exact. Do you work with foreign buyers and investors? How do you work with them? Is there a language barrier? I saw you interacting with the entire group and wanted to dig a little deeper into this.
I’m planning another trip this year to a real estate conference as I’m bringing feature properties to market directly. It’s evident the Chinese culture is alive and well in Vancouver and brokering our boarders to work with and understand them intimately has always been my approach. But let’s also understand that there is a strong local base transaction/buyer that we must truly target

because it’s one that’s spoken about a lot. We definitely have the resources when it comes to buyers who do not speak English, BUT most if not all people buying here in Vancouver whether it be Chinese, Russian, Spanish are all very educated. So - most of them speak English well enough. Often what I find is the Chinese don’t let you know this because they are either shy or simply because they themselves are trying to be strategic in their approach to buying. Time and time again after they get familiar with you and comfortable they truly come around. In knowing this, you need to bridge the relationship gap like you would with anyone. One of the biggest things that needs to be spoken about is that the Chinese agents have been leveraging the language equation with local sellers telling the local sellers that as a result of the hypothetical language barrier
SAM: Any predictions for the 2017 real estate market in Vancouver? We’ve seen lots of changes by the Provincial Government and the volume of transactions have been released and are significantly down. What are your thoughts? DEREK: I’ve already seen some solid sales. I currently have an $18 Million and $11 Million deal on the table. Sure, it’s going to be slower... but remember, we are coming off some historic sales volumes Jan-May 2016 so we knew those numbers would slow down. We will all regroup for the first 4-6 months volumewise in 2017 and the homes with the best awareness approaches and the overall best presentation will be victorious.

the truth. It’s so evident on all the deals I’ve done and our office has done with Chinese buyers that buyers and sellers are quickly realizing that knowledge, expertise, marketing/ advertising, strategy and trust are the key reasons to choose who to work with. I took a trip to China a few years ago and it was a great experience for me to fully understand the culture.

Built in 2014 and located in Ayutthaya, Thailand (80 km north of Bangkok), the Sala Ayutthaya Resort and Spa is elegant and understated in its impressive architectural design. The hotel both emphasizes the city’s stunning surroundings steeped in heritage, while incorporating architectural devices that mitigate the risks of the region’s tendency to flood by using stepped decks. Onion Architects, the firm which design the 26-room boutique hotel, emphasized the ancient city’s beauty while accounting for its geological temperament by approaching the site sympathetic to its environment yet with the highest standard of design treatment. The result is a gently monumental structure, whose mazelike corridor entranceway mimics a fortified medieval city, fusing traditional elements such as the use of terracotta brick and wood and

blending seamlessly with the clean lines, steps and terraces of its interior courtyards. Only when you pass through its corridors does the full impact and beauty of the location become apparent. From the Sala Ayutthaya hotel’s restaurant, its guests revel in a view which rivals the top sites in the world. Situated directly opposite from the incredibly ornate Buddhist temple, Wat Phutthaisawan, the hotel is uniquely positioned within the heart of the ancient city of Ayutthaya, formerly a wealthy centre of international trade and capital of the Siamese kingdom from 1350-1767. By 1700, Ayutthaya was the largest city in the world, with 1 million residents, sometimes referred to as the “Venice of the east”. After the city was nearly burned to the ground in 1767, only a few of the original buildings remained. The remnants of
this historical kingdom were recognized by UNESCO and the city is now a World Heritage Site. Hotel guests benefit from a multitude of activities as it rests on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The Sala Ayutthaya hotel offers river cruises, bicycle tours, a floating market, and elephant tours as well as golf, tennis, and a gym and spa. Thoughtful landscaping completes the 38,000 square foot hotel complex; as its trees mature to create a scented walkway to the river, the hotel like the city, will grow and mature through time. The hotel’s understated elegance is also augmented by a double height contemporary gallery space, which showcases artworks by local artists and offers an impressive space for special events and private parties. The Sala Ayutthaya offers five levels of accommodation: Superior; Deluxe River View; Deluxe River View Terrace; 1 Bedroom Pool Suite; and 1 Bedroom Duplex River View Suite, each offering individual configurations, not replicated within the complex. If you are looking for a relaxed yet luxurious getaway; with ancient temples to explore on your doorstep, look no further than Sala Ayutthaya. salaresorts.com/ayutthaya

This new selection of adornment reflects five of London’s historic landmarks, from across the capital and through a number of eras, spanning the time period of the city’s inception as the Roman town of Londinium (extending as far back in time as AD 43) right through to the most modern of landmarks, representing London as a contemporary cultural capital with a history steeped in character.

Through the feminine filter of artist, Mary McCartney’s evocative photography, the eldest daughter of Sir Paul McCartney, the “London De Beers woman” is the focus of its latest collection as conveyed through romantic pastel atmospheric imagery. De Beers has created 5 custom lines of jewelry inspired by a number of iconic landmarks throughout London. These include: the Albert Bridge (1873); Elizabeth Tower (1859) - more famously known as St Stephens Tower, and housing the ‘Big Ben’ bell until it was renamed in 2012 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee; the Battersea Power station (constructed from the 1930’s and updated through to the 1950’s), an exemplar of Art Deco industrial architecture and now home to the Tate Modern Art Gallery; the Thames Path, which skirts the meandering Thames River and has been a natural path since the birth of the nascent city; and finally, the London Eye (officially opened on New Year’s Eve 1999 to mark the millennium). This chapter in De Beers’ history is a continuation of the brand’s long standing talented women project, featuring women who embody the De Beers DNA. Mary McCartney, as a renowned and prolific photographer (like her mother, Linda), parallels both the coveted lineage of the historic jewelry house and exquisite artistry of the jewels themselves. Her interpretation of London’s historic sites through photography, are married seamlessly to the jewelry designs of De Beers’ finest products. Ranging from 1 to 25 carats, each series offers rings, necklaces, earrings, that comprise a work of art – whether worn individually or as a full set. The shape, line and cut of each piece echoes the period and style of their corresponding landmark. An array of cuts such as ovals, marquise, emerald, pears and rounds are perfectly matched to the graduated carat weight of each diamond.
97
Whether a present from a loved one, or to yourself, these finely crafted artisan pieces are sure to dazzle on every occasion and can be passed down from generation to generation. Through its rich heritage and fine craftsmanship, De Beers established and earned a world re-known reputation that encapsulates the sparkle, mystique and grandeur of London.

LANGHAM PLACE HOTEL ON NEW YORK’S EXCLUSIVE 5TH AVENUE

Luxury home furnishings brand Roche Bobois has made its name in high-end, exceptionally made furniture and bold contemporary design since its inception in 1960. Last year, just in time for New York Fashion Week and the United Nations General Assembly, the retailer teamed up with New York’s iconic Langham Place hotel in a unique partnership that introduces an all-new concept: the new Roche Bobois Suites at Langham Places that opened their doors in September 2016.
L
Beautiful living room furniture, including the modular and stylish Presence Sofa, which features an twist on the classic Chesterfield; and the Epoq Sofa from the Nouveaux Classique collection, which represents French tradition through chic and understated elegance.
Prominently situated at 400 Fifth Avenue, Langham Place boasts a legendary presence in the city’s centre. With 214 guest rooms, a multi-million dollar permanent art collection, and a Michelin-starred restaurant, the hotel shows a classic residential aesthetic. The new collaboration, which happens to be Roche Bobois’ very first hospitality project, presents an exclusive take on two 1,900 square foot suites, located on the hotel’s highest 25th and 26th floors. Each suite received a full makeover from the Roche Bobois design team: inspired by the company’s tradition of collaborating with renowned couturiers such as Gaultier and Missoni, the interiors showcase the cutting-edge, high-fashion style synonymous with the brand, integrating elements from its recent partnership with Christian Lacroix. “[Roche Bobois’] sense of French art de vivre is the ideal counterpoint to our existing design aesthetic,” said Richard Bussiere, Langham Place managing director. “We are honored to be partnered with such a reputable design powerhouse.” Some of the suites’ most notable highlights include a curated selection of Roche Bobois’ iconic pieces such as king size Courchevel beds, embedded in a wall of leather, and the Epoq sofa from its Nouveaux Classique collection, an updated take on traditional French elegance. An Aqua table for ten presides over the dining room, with its water-drop shaped base cut from a single block of Carrara marble. Brocade artwork, textiles, and accent pillows come courtesy of Maison Christian Lacroix, the fashion house’s home furnishings division; while the understated drapery is the touch of menswear designer Paul Smith, relaying a suiting-like sharpness in its clean lines. Each suite features two full bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths, a living and dining area with a full-service kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame an incredible view of the New York skyline and Empire State building. “We are truly excited about this collaboration with Langham Place,” said Daniel Lombardi, a Trade and Contract representative with Roche Bobois. “There could be no better partner for our first hospitality project in the US. Our two companies share the same goal, which is for guests to feel at home away from home.” Roche Bobois | West Hastings, Vancouver

In his 76 years of life, Ferruccio Lamborghini has built a legend.
In 1963, the Italian industrialist would lay the foundation to one of the world’s most iconic automobile brands, when he conceived the Automobili Lamborghini; a remarkable machine that would inspire a whole new league of supreme supercars, and leave behind a legacy to be worshipped for generations. In 2016, Lamborghini’s renowned founder would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To commemorate this significant date, Lamborghini’s designers took free creative rein to honor Ferruci’s dynamic vision with an incredible automobile accordingly named Centenario, meaning ‘centenary’. Unveiled at Monterey Car Week in California, the open air version of the Lamborghini Centenario, the Centenario Roadster, embodies the automaker’s core traditions, adhering to its ‘form follows function’ motto. Its dramatic silhouette, however, marks a departure from the typical Lamborghini, incorporating elements of GT and Formula 1 race cars. A carbon fiber monocoque showcases clean, powerful lines, with low overhangs at front and back,
an aggressive rear, an integrated adjustable rear wing, and a massive diffuser that aids in increasing downforce, with air flowing out through a channel in the cabin wall. An ultra-responsive V12 powers the impressive machine, delivering an astounding 770 hp. Going from 0-100 km/ h takes all of 2.9 seconds, with speed topping an exhilarating 350 km/h, and braking distance taking just 31 meters from 100-0 km/ h. Enhanced control comes courtesy of a new rear wheel steering system, which increases turning agility at low speeds while increasing stability at high speeds. The passenger cabin is engineered with no less detail to functionality as much as comfort, ensuring the ultimate driving experience while minimizing turbulence. A chic earth-toned “Terra di California” palette plays up the subtly luxe interior, inlaid with Bianco Polar leather. The exterior, in contrast, displays an exclusive shade of silver, “Argento Centenario”, fashioned by Centro Stile Lamborghini designers specifically for the Centenario Roadster. A signature matte texture is attained through a sophisticated process by which the metal is dissolved and the metal grain diluted to achieve a smooth satin finish.

Massimiliano
Pogliani,
Vertu’s
Chief
Executive
Officer, said: “There has always been significant consumer desire for Vertu products that make a lifestyle statement. Many of our consumers not only appreciate rarity and craftsmanship in the goods that they choose to own, but desire products that reflect modern styling and trends in their colour palette and material. They expect a statement piece that not only performs to the utmost standard technically, but is also beautiful as an object as well.
In contrast to Signature Touch, which has seen its popularity soar amongst our more traditional and corporate customers and is very masculine in design, with hard, straight, edges and classic lines, Aster is a more unisex offer and appeals to a different customer; someone searching for something a little more glamorous. In Aster we looked to create a handset that was not only engineered to perform to the highest standard, but one that would complement our customers’ lifestyles in its capacity as a fashionable accessory. For those desirous of luxury and understated elegance, but unwilling to compromise on performance, Aster is the ultimate lifestyle handset.” He continued, “Over the last two years we have expanded our product range with specific consumers in mind. Powerful technology now runs throughout all Vertu devices and there has been tremendous opportunity for us to tailor designs, materials and service suites to meet differing consumer needs and desires. Today, we have a coherent, segmented product portfolio in which every model delivers Vertu’s unique combination of craftsmanship and materials, services and technology, enabling our global consumers to choose from distinctly different flavours of our brand whilst still receiving the ultimate Vertu experience. We will go further with our segmentation strategy over the next 18-months, expanding at either end of our current range through elements such as higher end materials and services or a wider variety of personalisation options, for example. Importantly, future
all products
will continue to be true to the Vertu spirit.”

Chanel’s
favourite
flower,
the
camellia, emits no scent. Its delicacy provides an alluring contrast to the simple, bold lines of CHANEL’s fashion pieces, with a singular piece articulating just enough emphasis toward its wearer, without drawing too much attention. The camellia is a forbidden flower, thought to symbolize androgyny, going beyond convention. It was a decorative device often found in her Parisian studio on Chinese decorations of the Coromandel screens and wallpaper. The Plume line features the feather motif which perfectly illustrates the expertise, audacity and creative spirit of CHANEL Fine Jewelry. Used in CHANEL Haute Couture as a fabric, the feather took root in the 1920s in fashion. It reflects the freedom and inspired modernity of the jewelry pieces from 1932 in jewelry for today. CHANEL’s fine jewelry collections identify with specific types of women, serving the gamut of individual styles. From Coco Crush’s luxurious quilted motif, to the all mighty lion in the Sous le Signe du Lion collection, to the classic chain of the Ultra collection - all of these collections weave into the fabric of CHANEL, deeply rooting the its primacy and reputation, and securing its place as an innovative leader in the universe of fashion.

LUXE JEWELLERY & WATCHES
_ VACHERON CONSTANTIN’S _ NEW METLERS D’ ART VILLES LUMIERES COLLECTION PROVIDES AN ILLUMINATING NIGHT VIEW OF THE MAJOR CREATIVE CENTERS OF THE WORLD
GENEVA, PARIS & NEW YORK
148
T
The new Métiers d’Art Villes Lumières collection is an invitation to embark upon a nocturnal journey above cities bubbling with creativity. On dials draped with an enamelled
base in deep shades, a wide variety of powders creates a bird’s-eye view miniature tableau of these sprawling urban expanses. Traditional Grand Feu champlevé enamelling mingles with handapplied precious powder, an art never yet used in Fine Watchmaking. The striking and realistic beauty of these Hallmark of Geneva certified timepieces opens up whole new artistic and creative horizons, where traditional skills are constantly nurtured by fresh influences. The Maison has dreamed up a sparkling encounter between two exceptional arts: Grand Feu champlevé enamelling, a skill passed on for almost three centuries by the Vacheron Constantin artisans; and hand-applied precious powder, a technique mastered by Japanese guest artist Yoko Imai. This is the very first time that this technique has been used on a watch dial to which particles of gold, pearl, platinum and diamond powder are meticulously distilled one by one, endowing the enamel with exceptional radiance. The bright dots of light, placed with the greatest precision, compose a portrait of these broad and majestic urban landscapes. The light effects play across these strikingly realistic roads, rivers and famous landmarks. Certified by the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva, the Métiers d’Art Villes Lumières watches beat to the rhythm of a mechanical Manufacture Vacheron Constantin caliber graced with refined finishing, in accordance with traditional Fine Watchmaking techniques. The first three models in this new collection are dedicated to the nocturnal magic of Geneva, Paris and New York. This night-flight will soon continue over other cities. TheMétiers d’Art Villes Lumières collection perpetuates the age-old Vacheron Constantin tradition of artistic crafts. In 1755, the very first known watch by the founder of the Maison, Jean-Marc Vacheron, already featured delicate engraved arabesque motifs. Ever since, for almost three centuries, gemsetters, enamellers, guillocheurs and engravers have been cultivating and passing on these forms of expertise that have become extremely rare. Today as yesterday, over the years and in step with successive creations, their

These decorative skills have acquired the habit of echoing each other, combining their techniques with art and creativity on watch dials, and often adopting the spirit of lesser known and surprising arts such as illumination, Japanese lacquer, glyptics or gemstone cloisonné effects. THE AGE OF ELECTRIC
SUPERCARS _
ULTIMATE IN LUXURY
THE SPECTACULAR MERCEDES-MAYBACH 6 The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is the first luxury coupé in the series of visionary design show cars from Mercedes-Benz.
With its sensual, emotional design and intelligent details, the Vision MercedesMaybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design – this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles.
W
The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car. Thanks to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, it features all-wheel drive. The output of the drive system is 550 kW. The shallow underfloor battery has a usable capacity of approx. 80 kWh. This not only allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0‑100 km/h in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250 km/h) but also a range of over 500 kilometres! Clearly defined contours and organically formed
158
wings stand in contrast to the sharply drawn, extended feature line on each side which defines the upper vehicle body from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle to the rear. There is also a striking contrast between the Maybach red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end. The extended, round “boat tail” format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6’s rear recalls a luxury yacht. The front windscreen serves as a transparent display: driving-related data and geographical information is shown across its full width, augmenting the outside world with additional information. This information can be controlled and adjusted by the occupants using gestures. The dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge.
The sitting surface forms a horizontal, which transitions into the vertical of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing. In the doors and dashboard the traditional wood trim softens the appearance of the digital control and display interfaces. As a contrast to the digital world of the displays, elm is used in the floor area, creating a refined yachting look. “Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool”, states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.”

A DAZZLING VISION
OF THE FUTURE FROM ROLLS-ROYCE
Rolls-Royce, like no other brand, is certainly known for pushing the envelope when it comes to utmost exclusivity; synonymous with the crème de la crème of automotive luxury possessed only by the selected elite. But what happens when the cult automaker rolls out a concept car unrestrained by anything as mundane as real-life limits? The answer: the Vision Next 100, codenamed 103EX – a creation so visionary, it doesn’t bother with conventions such as steering wheels, or even a driver.
L
In their place, 103EX’s potential passengers are treated to a suitably imposing, 5.9 meters long by 1.6 metres high machine, which could more accurately be described as a cruise ship one wheels. The likeness is heightened with a smooth hull that surrounds Rolls’ iconic ‘Double R’ Pantheon grille, and catamaran-like aluminumwrapped wheels. A zero-emission drivetrain, advanced suspension, and admittedly mythical-

strength combustion V12 power what is bound to be an impossibly smooth “magic carpet ride”. Inside the cabin, any preconceived notions including dashboards and controls are dispensed with entirely, in favor of a large OLED screen up front. In the center, an oversized silk and wool ivory sofa sprawls, inviting riders to make the most of the restful drive. A plush ivory wool carpet sits sumptuously underfoot, with the interior wrapped in Macassar wood panelling. In lieu of a driver, the fully robotized vehicle comes with your very own virtual assistant and chaffeur, ‘Eleanor’. Backed by sophisticated artificial intelligence technologies, Eleanor’s etherealvoiced presence carries out every task you could conceivably need on or off the road: from getting the car to you and back, to keeping track of calendars and appointments, to alerting you to crucial road conditions and safety information. In a word, it’s a vaguely sci-fi futuristic fantasy come
true. With the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 we were mindful not to dwell on the past,” says Giles Taylor, Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “We wanted to be as innovative as possible and at the same time transcend the design history of the marque.” The show-stopping machine was presented in a mesmerizing unveiling ceremony at London’s Roundhouse. To demonstrate one of the concept’s founding tenets, the Grand Arrival, the Vision Next 100 was shown arriving at its destination, basked in an otherworldly glow. A glass canopy lifted dramatically, just as a step emerged smoothly from under the running board, with a red lighted path alluding to a rolled-out red carpet - all perfectly befitting the automobile’s - and it’s owner’s - regal style. “The Rolls-Royce patron will continue to be a famous figure in the future,” said Rolls Royce Director of Design Giles Taylor. I envision that the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100

THE SLEEK & SEXY
ASTON MARTIN
_
VANQUISH
ZAGATO VOLANTE
_ WORDS: KATE MISSINE
Rippling in all its sleek, dynamic glory, the 2017 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante may look like it has zoomed right out of the future; but the race car’s sporting roots run back nearly six decades. In 1960, the creation of the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato marked the first of what would become a long-standing collaboration tradition between the British automaker and Italian design house Zagato. Its remarkable legacy included such memorable convertibles as the 1987 V8 Vantage Volante and the 2003 DB AR, an established collectible.
R
The new Vanquish Zagato Volante plays partner to the Vanquish Zagato Coupe, previously unveiled to overwhelming success at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, with an elegant convertible version that will be limited to a production run of only 99 models. The Vanquish Zagato Volante shares a number of the
166
Coupe’s distinctive features, including an enhanced V12 powertrain that pumps out 592 bhp, hitting 0-60 mph in a zippy 3.7 seconds. The two models also mirror each other’s classic proportions, true to quintessential Aston Martin form. A muscular silhouette and sculpted rear are wrapped with carbon fibre sills for a powerful shape, marked with Zagato’s trademark ‘bladed’ LED taillight reflectors and twin rear deck cowls. The Volante’s only significant difference is, of course, the bespoke hood concealed at the luggage compartment, which unfolds swiftly when needed with Aston Martin’s signature mechanism. “Just like the Coupe, we have emphasized the way surfaces change and intersect to create a muscular form; to create an elegant, flowing shape that really works,” says Aston Martin’s EVP and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman.
Inside, Aston Martin’s subdued yet impeccable craftsmanship takes the spotlight, with a classically masculine aesthetic: herringbone carbon-fibre, sumptuous Bridge of Weir leather, and anodized bronze detailing. The trademark Zagato ‘Z’ is subtly woven throughout, from the seat’s quilt pattern stitching to the headrests and console. As par for the course with the automaker, Aston Martin’s specialist ‘Q’ division is always on standby to fulfill the client’s requests for personalization.
“The Vanquish Zagato Volante illustrates the ways in which Aston Martin design can evolve in collaboration with such a trusted and long-standing partner,’ says Reichman. “Vanquish Zagato Volante continues Aston Martin’s new century of innovation and creativity, strengthening the association between these great automotive marques in the process”. The Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante is scheduled for first customer deliveries in 2017.

ALL THE MOST DOMINANT SPECIES START OUT IN THE WILDERNESS There’s no denying Land Rover’s mastery over the wilds, but add a 3.0-liter Td6 turbocharged V6 diesel engine and even the streets will have to submit. The Range Rover Sport handles the most uncooperative roads with a lighter, more athletic aluminum frame and with a Td6 Diesel engine you get 9.4 L/100 km to the V6 gasoline model’s 12.4 L/100 km.
