Is the Panamera more “sports car” or “luxury sedan”? To answer this question, we test drove not one but two cars – the 911


Carrera S and the Panamera S, in that order.

The answer begins with the moment you slip into the driver’s seat of the Panamera S. It’s a low-set cabin; the driver’s seat position is similar to a 911’s, just 1.2 inches higher. The cockpit architecture also carries over the 911 look in the instrument panel, with its array of five round dials. The transmission tunnel has a battery of switches and buttons that are more logical and less gimmicky than other luxury sedans in its class.

The Panamera is unmistakably Porsche in its exterior. The sleek tapering of the hatchback and an abundance of other 911 styling details, give it the look of a sibling or offspring of the quintessential 911. into a 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine, combined with the PDK dual-clutch seven-speed automated manual transmission earlier introduced in the 911. A touch the gas pedal brings on the familiar growl and pounce of the 911. That the Panamera is much more a predator than prey is clear from the get go. With it’s low center-of-gravity, the Panamera takes bends and curves with ease clinging securely to the road. Equipped with a launch-control system and a Start/Stop system, the

Panamera makes for more environmentally friendly driving as well. As soon as the Panamera comes to a stop, the system shuts off the engine, then restarts very softly when the driver lifts his foot off the brake. It’s an industry first for V-8 engines and automatic transmissions. For high-speed stability, the Panamera Turbo is equipped with an active spoiler, called the “3D spoiler.” It pops up and extends widthwise at higher speeds adding considerable downforce to reduce lift.

“The designs for my first wallpaper collection are all fragments from memory. Because I’m not drawing from life references, I let go of worries about correctness of form and just let sketches come to life as patterns in their own right ”

The British artist Georgia Horton brings a wealth of experience to ‘The One Collection’, her very first range of wallpapers. Brought up in Southern Africa, where she later worked with traditional and fashion textiles, she initially trained in Italy as a fine artist. There she studied the intricacies and disciplines of museum catalogue drawing, architectural restoration, fresco and trompe l’oeil, all of which have informed her subsequent works. Now based in London, England, she is well known for her interiors commissions including large scale murals and restorations. In 2009, Georgia turned her attention from murals to wallpapers, but reflecting her background as an artist, her approach is uniquely artisanal. Worlds apart from mass produced products, her specialist wallpapers are hand printed in very short runs. This also allows her to offer the option of customised colourways, opening the door for customers to use her designs in a wide range of different situations. Adopting this very traditional and highly skilled method of producing wallpaper pays dividends in the incredible qualities and detail of her designs. Georgia herself describes her strongly illustrative wallpapers as “somewhere between organic and architectural”. Themes of light and texture, symmetry and spatial illusion link together the very individual series of patterns which comprise ‘The One Collection.’ Designed on a large scale, the patterns all originate from nature; from the twig nests which sparked ‘Mikada’ to the whispering glade of ‘Pavilion Palm’ and witty formality of ‘Lobster Quadrille’. Georgia’s love of nature underpins her work as an artist and

since childhood, she has been fascinated by the intricacies of flowers, plants and the animal kingdom. ‘Lobster Quadrille’ is one of the best loved patterns from her current collection. The name is inspired by Alice in Wonderland and the pattern does have an almost ‘hyper-real’ quality. Lobsters are used to create a detailed symmetrical pattern which is wonderfully intriguing to the eye; working both at a distance and close up. Georgia says the pattern ‘arrived’ one day when she was casually sketching out, almost doodling, a series of lobster shapes. She adds, “Lobsters are such great fun to draw and when these guys appeared, the dance just happened. I wanted this pattern to be fun and light hearted.” Likewise, the contemporary floral ‘Follow Me’ was inspired by working in her garden. “I find the flowers of wild convolvulus irresistible and although considered to be a weed I don’t like getting rid of any plants until they have stopped flowering. Here, just as in the garden, it is found meandering in all its glory”

The finer details of these and Georgia’s other incredibly vibrant designs are seen at their very best because they are so painstakingly printed using the silk screen process; a form of printing which goes back for centuries. Wallpaper experts agree that this traditional craft process still produces highly superior print detail. Famously explored by contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, it remains the very best way to transfer works of art such as Georgia’s designs to the large areas of paper necessary to decorate walls. There are 9 different patterns in ‘The One Collection’. Each is available in 4 stock colourways, which range from sympathetic neutrals to highly dramatic dark shades and metallics. Alternatively, all of the designs can be custom coloured, and because the colours are all mixed by eye, bespoke commissions can be very accurately matched to the desired shades. In a world where so many domestic items are mass produced, it’s great to find a rising star like Georgia Horton designing wonderful new wallpapers and hand printing them with specialist printers. As part of an extravagant advertising campaign, directory firm Yellow Pages invited Pacific Environment Architects Ltd to collaborate with them on the design for this treehouse restaurant. The form itself is a grown-ups tree house, designed using multiple fins of wood in a simple oval form. Comparisons have ranged from the obvious onion and garlic clove to a chrysalis or cocoon, whereas the architects themselves have referred to the structure as ‘reminiscent of childhood dreams and playtime, fairy stories of enchantment and imagination’.

Set on the edge of a forest, with panoramic views over the surrounding open meadows and streams, the structure itself is attached to one of the tallest giant redwood trees in the area. Situated 10m up the 40m trunk, the form is connected to the tree with steel collars at the top and bottom, with a circular plan that is split apart on the axis with the rear floor portion raised. Having reached a midway stage of the project, PEL were informed that they would have to provide wheelchair access to their suspended treehouse. With this in mind, a gently sloping walkway was constructed between the trees, allowing easy access to disabled visitors.

One of the leading architects on the design team, Peter Eising, said: “I haven’t designed a treehouse since my childhood, let alone built a restaurant in one. I’ve been amazed at the interest from media and the design community overseas and, now that it’s completed, I’m really proud of the way it’s turned out.” The project has won multiple architectural awards, including the New Zealand Institute of Architects Branch Award, Gold Award at the New Zealand Institute of Design - BEST Awards and Excellence Award from the New Zealand Institue of Building. It was also a finalist at the World Architecture Awards 2009.

in the Beneteau 40 As the sailing season comes to a close for another year, it provides an ideal perspective to both remember the enjoyment had from a spectacular summer/fall season just past, as well as a look forward to what 2010 has in store on the water.

T

o help in this exercise, we visited Westerly Yacht Sales in Vancouver, the Beneteau dealer for western Canada, to ask about the Beneteau 40. The B40 was the standout boat of 2008 as determined by Cuising World Magazine’s Boat of the Year judges in their annual quest to find the winners amongst the various manufacturers’ products. Overall, the Beneteau 40, with its beautiful lines, is a boat that offers the exhilaration that sailors seek, along with a comfortable interior that captain and crew will appreciate after a long day of sailing. To start, we wanted to know a little about how a specific boat model comes into being. DH: When thinking about producing a new model, how does Beneteau approach designing and developing a new boat like the B40? WY: To keep moving forward in product development & design, Benteau has always updated its line of yachts every 4-5 years or so. Since they cannot re-design the whole line at the same time, they schedule various models to start with, and then move through the lineup until every model has been re-done.

Beneteau started with the 46 and 49 in 2007 which enjoyed spectacular sales results, and they happily continued to update their cruising range with the introduction of the 40 for the 2008 sailing season. As with her sister ships, the new Beneteau 40 was designed by naval architects Berret/Racoupeau with the modern, linear interior décor provided by the prestigious Italian company, Nauta Design. Essentially, the sailing market calls for certain size boats so that sailors can choose the boat that best suits their needs, and in the case of the new Beneteau 40, it succeeded the previous 393 model, and serves as Beneteau’s introduction to the big boat series. DH: What do the judges look for in a boat of the year? WY: Judges typically look for style & comfort belowdecks, and a well-organized topside for ease of sail handling before going out for a test sail. Under sail, they look to see how she handles in light air, and then try to understand how she will handle in a stiffer breeze. With all of their work done, the judges found the Beneteau 40 to be the outstanding midsize cruiser amongst all other entrants.


WY: Immediately, when astern to the dock, one notices the ease of entry onto the boat through the transom because of the dual helm positions – twin wheels provide improved visibility of the rig on either tack. This is a noticeable change from the single helm on a centre pedestal on the 393, and the helm set-up is further enhanced with the near-by navigational instruments for ease-of-handling. In addition, the new 40 incorporates the sleek new hull/deck design lines that conforms to the Beneteau 49 & 46 appearance, and continues to set Beneteau yachts visually apart from their competitors’ boats. Below, the first big difference is that Beneteau went to the noted Italian design firm, Nauta Design, and they have given the line a thoroughly Euromodern look with a spacious and well-lit interior, and highlighted with light colored, select Moabi hardwoods to provide the richness that is a Beneteau hallmark. Many other refinements below, such as the generous use of stainless steel, add interesting touches to the core of warmth and comfort. Two comfortable size staterooms and an ample aft galley provide the sumptuous comfort most sailors demand from today’s manufacturers. (Editor’s note: the B40 also comes in a 3-cabin floorplan). DH: Isn’t a 40’ boat a little big for most sailors? WY: Increasingly, the market is moving toward bigger boats. Back in the 70’s and early 80’s when fiberglass boats were still in their infancy, a 30 foot boat was considered big, and the rare sighting of a 40 would have been referred to as a yacht. Today however, Beneteau starts its model line with the 31, and goes upward from there with the 40 right in the middle of the basic line (seven models running from the 31 to the 49). Furthermore, Beneteau also produces two luxury size yachts, the 54 and the new 58; a reflection of an increasing market demand for that super-size vessel as well. Given the amount of time that sailing has now been a part of life for an ever-increasing number of people, it is little wonder that bigger boats are in greater demand. For one thing, many people shopping for a new boat have been sailing for decades, and feel very comfortable in handling a 40’ boat. These days, new-comers are looking at a sailboat as their cabin on the water and want the amenities that a larger boat affords. And with the modern equipment available for today’s sailor, experts and novices alike can handle a forty with ease, in fact, with just a little practice, the 40 can easily be single-handed.
