WOMAN OF INFLUENCE: JANE HAMM LERUM Jane Hamm Lerum and her husband bought Joullian Vineyards & Winery when they were just 24 years old. Today, four years later, she balances running her winery with a newly rekindled passion, criminal justice reform in Oklahoma. It’s a dichotomy that suits her extremely well.
RITUALS OF SELF CARE: MASKING Self-care is crucial to well-being. A good self-care regimen can reduce stress, improve sleep and keep us looking our best. Chelsey Ann, whose Midtown boutique has taken the City by storm, explains the ins and outs of masking.
DESIG N SPEAKS WITH TRAVIS MORELOCK Freshening up our look from time to time comes naturally to most of us. Travis Morelock encourages us to freshen up our homes just as often, and offers simple-yetstunning upgrades to consider.
TRAVEL: THE WILD BEAUTY OF WEST ICELAND Iceland is whatever you want it to be: rugged and remote, urbane and romantic, or somewhere in between. Globe-trotting photographer JD Merryweather toured West Iceland and has written a definitive guide. KFOR anchor and reporter Lacey Lett’s Iceland is vastly different: it’s romantic and life-changing.
URBAN COLOR: STYLE IN THE CITY While the fashion uniform on the East Coast has always been black on black, here in the sun-washed center of the country, glorious color is the sophisticated antidote to winter. Photographer Josh Welch captures the power of the palette in a decidedly urban-rustic landscape.
LOCAL LEADERS: THE NEXT G ENERATION Meet the next generation of entrepreneurs. These women and men are taking risks and changing the Oklahoma landscape as we know it, and all are under the age of 40. Their careers are vastly different, but their dedication and drive are very much aligned.
OPTIMAL LIFE SPACE: MAKE AN ENTRANCE Streamlining and simplifying are two ways to create calm in your daily life, but achieving this organizational nirvana can be emotional and overwhelming. Knowing its emotional charge and working through it, can yield tremendous rewards.
701 HUDSON The level of quiet, beautiful, elegant luxury contained within the walls of the newlycompleted 701 Hudson building is understated, but unmistakable. Every room, from the floors to the cabinetry, is custom built and immaculate. Only eleven extremely fortunate people will call it home. Join publisher Stacy Johnson as she explores every detail.
LUXIERE REAL ESTATE Where you begin and end your days is perhaps even more important than what you do in between. The properties we’ve curated for you are impeccable and unique. A rarified collection of places to call home.

THE ESSENCE OF OKLAHOMA A Note from the Publisher This issue of L U X I E R E is one of my very favorites, because it perfectly encapsulates so much of the essence of Oklahoma. Our state is undergoing a near-constant metamorphosis and our great joy is bringing the stories of creative change-makers to you. Our Woman of Influence this issue comes by her dogooding naturally. Jane Hamm Lerum is co-owner of Joullian Vineyards and serves on the board of the Arnall Family Foundation. Her dedication to criminal justice reform was sparked by the realization that “liberty and justice for all” is still very much a work in progress, and she knew she could help create change. She’s Oklahoma County’s first-ever criminal justice reform policy director, and she’s already changing things for the better. Her mother, Sue Ann Arnall, has also been featured in these pages for her dedication to causes she and Jane share: criminal justice reform and animal welfare. It is a family legacy we are pleased to share with you. You’ll also meet seven young entrepreneurs, each changing the face of their industry. Their backgrounds are as different as can be, but the things they share – drive, gumption and heart - make them an inspiration.
collaboration with Brent Swift Construction. All of the completely custom interior finish work was the provenance of Swift, whose quietly elegant work has been coveted by a certain set for decades. If you are looking for a cool new travel adventure, Iceland comes highly recommended by KFOR-TV anchor and co-host of Freedom 43’s Rise ‘n’ Shine Lacey Lett, whose trip to the country with her then-fiancé two years ago was nothing short of magical. Renowned photographer and globe-trotter JD Merryweather holds the same deep affinity for Iceland, having explored it for weeks on two occasions. Each brings their experience to life for you starting on page 17. As always, our love of beauty, beautiful homes, gracious living and fashion have inspired us, as we hope it inspires you. Sincerely,
Stacy D. Johnson
Urban-infill construction is not at first glance a sexy phrase. Until, that is, one tours the pristine, modern, gorgeous project located at 701 N. WOMEN OF INFLUENCE
JANE HAMM LERUM
WOMAN OF INFLUENCE At 28, Jane Hamm Lerum is a woman hitting her stride. A self-described fixer, she is remarkably self-aware and thoughtful. This is a woman born into immense privilege, who feels the responsibility of it, takes nothing for granted, and relishes the idea of improving the world where she can. “My mother would always talk to us about the fact that we were born with certain gifts: intelligence and passion, but also a certain wealth. And she would ask us what we were going to do with those gifts. Because of the values my parents instilled in us, I feel like it’s my responsibility to work hard and push myself. I would feel lazy and ashamed not to,” Lerum says. Lerum is Oklahoma County’s first-ever criminal justice reform policy director, a post she has held for a handful of weeks. She’s probably also the only employee of a county commissioner who also owns a vineyard and winery. The two are far more similar than you might think. Lerum and her husband Tom bought Joullian Vineyards, a winery with Oklahoma ties, in 2015. They had been friends in high school, but didn’t start dating until college. She attended Duke University; he attended the United States Air Force Academy. The pair married and moved to Los Angeles, where Tom was stationed. Jane has studied public policy at Duke and had been working in banking. “Our original plan was to lease some property from my mother to start a vineyard. Tom and I studied wine business management at the University of California Los Angeles and realized that it was really a much more feasible plan to purchase an existing vineyard than to start one from the ground up,” she says. After a four-hour meeting at Joullian, the deal was all but done. “I think maybe when we first walked into the meeting, they thought we were crazy, but by the end of the meeting they felt good about us and about turning things over to us. We worked hard to make the transition smooth. It was wonderful. All of the staff stayed with us, and we moved forward together,” Lerum says. Lerum’s mother, Sue Ann Arnall, is a woman of intense focus, a trait she passed to her daughter, who immediately dug into the infrastructure of the winery’s business model. The company was doing well, but Lerum saw more potential, so she and Tom streamlined sales processes, updated wine labels, revamped the website and let the wine speak for itself. Tom’s station in California ended and the Lerums moved back to Oklahoma, with a goal of continuing to work on sales for Joullian from here.
This is where wine sales led Lerum to criminal justice reform. It’s an ‘only in Oklahoma’ story. “I was introduced to Judge Cindy Truong, who offered to help me by setting up meetings with people in the restaurant community. And while she was doing that, she sort of asked me if that was what I really wanted to be doing,” Lerum says. “Judge Truong is the definition of a selfless individual. She is tirelessly advocating for criminal justice reform and is one of the main reasons our jail population has been reduced to 1,700 from 2,600.” Judge Truong introduced her to Oklahoma County Commissioner for District 3, Kevin Calvey, who offered her a job almost on the spot. She said yes almost as quickly. “I’ve always been interested in criminal justice reform, but hadn’t immersed myself in it like my mother has. We are both very passionate about it but came to our passions from different directions. I am certain that both she and I would have landed here regardless. I found the prospect of being able to help improve the system very exciting. I really have confidence that we will make a difference,” Lerum says. Lerum’s job is a daunting one but she neither sees it that way nor feels daunted by it. What she does feel, though, is exhausted. “My mom and I are very alike in that when we are focused, we are laser-focused.” She spends her days, and nights, poring through records, looking at the accounts, reviewing management practices and finding ways to make processes and day-to-day operations of the Oklahoma County Jail better and more efficient, an effort supported by Oklahoma County Sheriff P.D. Taylor. Reducing the population of the jail is part of the strategy; making sure the jail is properly staffed is another. “The majority of the people are there for nonviolent offences - things like failure to appear for parking or traffic tickets. Violent offenders need to be locked away, but we need to stop putting people in jail for non-violent offences. We also need to operate the jail with a full staff. Right now, it’s so understaffed that inmates stay in their cells all day and shower maybe once a week,” Lerum says. “If you treat a human being like that, what happens next? They are released into the general population and are expected to be upstanding, law abiding citizens? They’ve been dehumanized. Nothing has been solved.” The reforms Lerum is working toward will also benefit taxpayers. “That’s the beauty of it. The problems I see are all very fixable, and the more of these problems we fix, the less it will cost to operate the jail,” she says. “I have been given the opportunity to work for my passions, and I plan to work on criminal justice reform for the foreseeable future. I hope that I am always pushing myself to learn and grow. I want to constantly be pushing myself out of my comfort zone.”

What Dreams are made of A TRIP BY OUR VERY OWN CHANNEL 4 MORNING ANCHOR FOR RISE AND SHINE, LACEY LETT.
In 2015, my significant other Josh told me he had always wanted to visit Iceland. I wondered why, of all the places in the world, this topped his list. He knew it was a popular stopover for people visiting Europe and honestly, not too far from the United States. We made plans to go to the capital, Reykjavík, in the summer of 2016, when the high temperature is 70-something degrees. What we didn’t realize was that daylight lasts 21 hours during the summer, which can be disorienting! Our first night, we visited Tapas Barinn, a downtown restaurant open late where you can order a prix fixe meal. The seafood was amazing. One of the dishes was paired with the popular Icelandic liquor Brennivin; it’s strong, but delicious. Try it when you’re Iceland, because it’s hard to find in the United States, and I still haven’t found it in Oklahoma! Our favorite experience was driving the south coast to Vik. It takes a full day, but you see the best nature has to offer. We rented a car, and I highly suggest doing the same when you’re in Iceland. Yes, your GPS will not pronounce any of the street names correctly, but then again you probably won’t either and will understand what it’s saying. The drive takes you to the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara. About 30 minutes away, stop at the Sólheimajökull Glacier and you will instantly feel the temperature drop. Glacier tours are offered, but require appropriate equipment and time, so Josh and I just walked up to the glacier and were able to stand near the bottom. It’s amazing to see how blue it was as well as how much it has subsided due to melting. Two beautiful waterfalls are also on the drive, one called Seljalandsfoss, where you can actually walk behind the falls. The other is Skogafoss. We were eagerly anticipating this particular waterfall because the Wallpaper Guide photos made it look gorgeous. We walked the 500-plus steps to the top to peer over the countryside and we saw several rainbows peeking from the mist below the falls. We then climbed down to a breathtaking view of this massive waterfall with double rainbows everywhere. While quite a few people were nearby, everyone seemed to walk away as my life was changed forever. There, at the bottom of this amazing waterfall, Josh kneeled, took out a ring hidden in his jacket, and proposed. It was a magical and intimate experience I will never forget. Just like Iceland’s glorious natural wonders, magical events happen there. Mine happened to be life-changing.

O K L A H O M A’ S N E X T G E N E R AT I O N O F E N T R E P R E N E U R S By Kati Hanna, Partner with The Mettise Group Meet the next generation of entrepreneurs. These women and men are taking risks and changing the Oklahoma landscape as we know it, and all are under the age of 40. I was fascinated to learn about what makes these entrepreneurs willing to put it all on the line to own their own business at such young ages? After my interviews, I quickly realized they each possess an old soul sense of wisdom and an inner drive to succeed. While each has a different set of rules for how they operate their companies, the common thread is a desire to continually learn and surround themselves with mentors, tools and opportunities to continue to be better.

Tell me about your company and what makes it unique? We help our clients tell their story by creating content for their online platforms while communicating the uniqueness of their business. At VGM we are passionate knowledge seekers. We are fascinated by entrepreneurship and committed to forming longlasting relationships with our clients; therefore we really take the time to know them and their industries. We believe this is the only way we will be able to help them narrate their story in an exceptional, engaging and effective way.
BRAD STUMPH FOUNDER AND OWNER • BREWERS UNION When I first met Brad Stumph, owner of Brewers Union, I was quickly struck with his genuine desire and heart for helping others. Stumph’s brewing incubator gives start up brewers access to resources they need to get started in the business. Brewers Union provides everything from brewing instructions and marketplace connections to a taproom to serve out of. You can find many of the brewers Stumph has helped get started in stores around the city and a few have even opened their own taprooms. Stumph has created the perfect “pay it forward” business model. What is your LUXIERE? I have a Jeep Wrangler JK with all the extras. It’s overkill for a daily driver, but it’s so much fun for weekend camping trips or a day at the off-road Park at Crossbar Ranch. What do you like most about what you do? My business model that works like a rugby scrum. It’s chaotic at times, but when the brewers interlock their arms, we can move our pack forward in an industry that is adding both local and out-of-state brands at a dizzying pace. My goal is to give brewers a space to collaborate, and I’m happiest when I see collaboration moving the scrum. Where are you planning to go on your next vacation? London! There will be football (soccer), pubs, and cask ale. If you could change one thing about your business what would it be? Because breweries are capital-intensive businesses, there is rarely enough discretionary revenue for a sustained advertising campaign. The more I see that people respond to the concept with such energy, the more I realize I need to do more to tell the story of the Brewers Union beyond the reach of our social media channels.
What is your LUXIERE? My greatest luxury is traveling. I believe that is the best way to invest your money. You learn so much about yourself when you travel, and ultimately these experiences stay with you for a lifetime. I find luxury in the simple things such as having time for myself and enjoying a moment of stillness and quietness. What do you like most about what you do? What I like the most is the fact that we get to work with companies that are in a variety of different industries; therefore we are always learning something new regarding different business models, leadership styles, and the nature of the business itself. We get to work with great leaders and be part of their growth. We feel very grateful to be part of their journey.

What has been your favorite job prior to owning your own business? Developing and teaching STEM curriculum. What is your morning routine? Wake up, maybe exercise, get a healthy breakfast for me and the family, get the kids ready for school, answer a few emails, and begin the first task of the day. Again, every day is different. The first task may be driving to a different state or suiting up to demo some rooms in a building. For more information on Hendrix and his amazing services, visit www.true-facade.com.
What is the last app you downloaded? Headspace – It’s a guided meditation app made simple. What is your dream car? I am not very much into cars; I personally fantasize more about living in the Amalfi Coast and owning a Vespa. Where are you planning to go on your next trip? Somewhere in Europe. That is where my soul feels at home. For more information on VGM Visual Storytelling, visit www.vgm.social
CHELSEY COBBS FOUNDER AND OWNER • SALT & WATER I first had the pleasure of meeting Chelsey Cobbs, when she was considering opening her first brick and mortar store, Salt & Water. Already a very successful makeup artist and skin care consultant, Cobbs had a desire to make her products and expertise more accessible to the Oklahoma City market. What struck me most about Cobbs is her extensive knowledge of skin care, makeup and the healthy difference the right products can make on your skin. Tell me about your company and what makes it unique? We’ve created an environment where people feel welcomed and safely vulnerable to reveal the areas where their skin and health have suffered. Within that space we get to watch and help those that desire to heal and live a healthier lifestyle.
What is the one piece of advice you would give your even younger self? Your career will rapidly shift away from a series of hierarchical promotions. Your community will become your net worth. Surround yourself with the mentors, business partners, and clientele that you aspire to be.
VALENTINA GUTIÉRREZ FOUNDER AND OWNER • VGM VISUAL STORYTELLING Valentina Gutiérrez owner of VGM is originally from Venezuela. She found the influence of her hard-working parents and their success to be the catalysts that made her want to own her own business at such a young age. Gutiérrez’s company, VGM, is not your typical digital marketing company. She is a true video and digital artist, and her craftsmanship and storytelling are like nothing I have seen. The time she takes to learn about her clients is apparent in her work and visual storytelling.
What is the last app you downloaded? FlareCON. It’s a controller for light fixtures I use when DJing weddings.
What is on your bucket list that you most certainly will check off before you die? My intention is to continue to travel and see the world through the locals’ eyes. There is something magical about immersing yourself into another country, language and lifestyle. I have experienced magical moments when traveling, and I am often amazed by the simplicity of life and raw human connection that transcends borders. I want to experience more of these moments.
What is your birth order? I am the oldest and have two younger sisters.
For more information on Brewers Union, visit www.buok.beer.
What is on your bucket list that you most certainly will check off before you die? I would like to design something that turns out to be quite significant. I have had these incredible ideas my entire life with no means to pursue any of them. The dream is to have a job where I get paid to make cool stuff by combining art and technology in unexpected ways so I can hope to stumble across one of these monumental accidents. Also, New Zealand!
What is your LUXIERE? Getting to fuel myself with adaptogens, potions, everything I get to put on or inside my body. NATHAN HENDRIX FOUNDER AND OWNER • TRUE-FACADE Nathan Hendrix, owner of True-Façade is one of the most fascinating young entrepreneurs I’ve met. He’s Oklahoma City’s own Tim Burton (Nightmare Before Christmas). Hendrix brings dreams to life in the most imaginative way. Tell me about your company and what makes it unique? We pool vastly different talents from technical creatives in the OKC area to provide experience design and immersive installations. With backgrounds in haunted houses, escape rooms, theater, film, live audio production, projection mapping, lighting, electronics, programming and many other fields, we simply enjoy bringing people’s crazy ideas to life. What is your LUXIERE? An incredibly flexible schedule, though it doesn’t always flex in my favor. What do you like most about what you do? Every day is different, and I’m constantly being challenged. One day I may be climbing a Ferris wheel to troubleshoot a lighting issue. The next day I may be producing a livestream video feed for a local talk show only to turn around and breathe life back into an automated show fountain. Basically, I create something every single day.
What do you like most about what you do? I love that even for a brief moment I get to witness someone be still and put their trust in me. I love helping people to see their natural beauty in a way that they may have forgotten or hadn’t realized was there. What is on your bucket list that you most certainly will check off before you die? Travel is never-ending for me but beyond that, I would love to take a sabbatical for a spiritual retreat. What is the most popular item in your store and why? Skincare, and specifically face cream. Hydration is such a key component for health and well-aging skin, and I believe people recognize this and are caring for themselves well. What is your dream car? A 1968 Volkswagen thing, preferably in hunter green. What do you keep at all times in your purse? Lip conditioner, propolis throat spray, hand cream, therapeutic essential oil roller and a crystal. To learn more about Salt & Water, visit www.saltandwaterco.com.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT What is the best advice you could offer your young self? Find a career that takes advantage of your natural talents instead of trying to “develop” your weak areas. You and your organization benefit the most if you’re in a role where you have a natural advantage over the competition by nature of your Godgiven talents, personality, and work habits, because it all comes down to execution, and when you’re in the right seat on the right bus applying the “gas pedal,” the results take care of themselves. For more information on Harlin and his company, visit www.trustpointok.com.
What has made the most impact on your professional career to date? I would easily have to say starting a business from scratch. There is so much you have to overcome in the market but also in yourself. I was always so hard on myself but when you have nothing and almost all odds are against you, you cannot be against yourself as well. So I learned a lot about positivity and optimism in an environment I probably never could have replicated in another way. TIMOTHY HARLIN FOUNDER AND OWNER • TRUSTPOINT INSURANCE Timothy Harlin, owner of TrustPoint Insurance is not your typical insurance agency owner. Harlin has gone back to the basics of building a business through the relationships and personal connections he and his team intentionally make a part of their business every day. Harlin drives his growth through developing consistency in his organization. No matter the size of the account, each client is treated with the genuine care and appreciation he believes is important in today’s busy world. Harlin has plans to expand his business model beyond the Oklahoma City market starting this year. What is your LUXIERE? Professionally, my greatest luxury is having the opportunity to work hard every day with top-notch individuals in my industry and related industries as we work to deliver an outstanding service level to our clients. From a personal standpoint, I feel blessed more than I deserve to live in a country with so much opportunity and to have a family that loves me. I enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters (3.5 years and 9 months), and we enjoy traveling, sailing, and playing golf every opportunity we get. What do you like most about what you do? Finding creative ways to solve problems. Leading a business is like an ongoing experiment. You keep looking for ways to tweak the inputs that bring a favorable improvement to the company’s output. You get some of them wrong, but when you find a tweak that substantially improves your company’s output, it has to feel about as good as hitting a home run in the World Series! What is one thing you cannot live without? As a Christian, my belief in God as a higher power and the fact that I’m on earth for a purpose enable me to not waste energy worrying about the “small” things like whether I’ll die in a car wreck or get hit by a bus next week, and instead focus about the important business of positively impacting my family, community, business, and the world around me. Without this confidence, I think it would be easy to get caught up in all the hate, controversy, and bad things that happen in our world and miss the opportunity to make a positive difference. Living life without believing in the opportunity to make a positive difference while on earth would be a miserable existence, and probably not one worth living for. What is your favorite TV show? Honestly, we go through phases. I like action and thrillers, and my wife can’t resist a good drama—our most recent compromise is binge-watching Shark Tank reruns. It definitely appeals to our entrepreneurial side! Where is the farthest you have ever traveled and what did you take with you? Singapore. I took a tech-company business plan to an international competition in college with a couple fellow business students. We returned with the 2nd place trophy (and some prize money) out of 130+ teams, which felt like a smashing success. 42 LUXIERE
ROBERT COPELAND FOUNDER AND OWNER • FOCUS OFFICE FURNITURE When I first met Robert Copeland a few years ago, it was obvious that he would be a successful entrepreneur. He invested in learning all about the furniture industry, establishing vendor relationships with the top furniture suppliers before ever opening his doors. Copeland realized there was a need in the Oklahoma City marketplace for personalized office furniture solutions for the busy professionals that minimized the time it took to furnish their office space by coming to them. A truly “putting the customer’s needs first business model. Tell me about your company and what makes it unique? We are a full-service commercial furniture supplier that provides complete workplace solutions to organizations of all sizes. We partner with over 80 different manufacturers so we can truly connect the right piece of furniture to what the real need is. We service the markets of corporations, education, government, and healthcare. What makes our company unique is that we truly serve the customer best in our industry by going out and meeting every one of our clients. We offer the services of meeting on-site, measuring, design, and consultation - all at no added cost. What is your LUXIERE? My greatest luxury might sound boring to some, but since I own a commercial furniture company, I have 2 desks in my office. I have one that is a normal height desk and one that is an electric height adjustable one, in addition to a sofa and a nice wardrobe cabinet. What do you like most about what you do? There’s always something different every day. Putting together complete workspace solutions for entire buildings or projects is extremely detailed-oriented and they’re all different. I also always love seeing it come together and the look on my client’s faces when they see their new workspace. What is one thing you cannot live without? Any notesyncing app. I use OneNote regularly, and it’s nice when I have thoughts and ideas about the business at home and don’t have my computer close by. I can just jot something down and see it when I’m in the office the next morning. What was the last great book you read that you could not put down? Good to Great by Jim Collins - one of my favorite books ever. What is your morning routine? My morning routine has changed over the past couple of years since my wife and I have a 1 year old and 2 year old. But most recently it is to wake up at six, have a cup of coffee, and give myself 15 minutes to wake up. Then go exercise, shower, get dressed, eat breakfast and head to work. I make eating breakfast last; that way, if I have to be with the kids more than I planned in the morning, I can eat a banana and Larabar on the way to the office.
KENDRA ROBBEN FOUNDER AND OWNER • ROBBEN LAW PLLC Kendra Robben is one of those owners that makes running a successful law firm easy all while she is building out a new office space, taking care of her two children both under the age of 6, and married to a husband serving in the military. When you meet Robben, you immediately know you are working with an attorney that cares. Robben’s success comes from her continued drive to do her very best for her clients. Tell me about your company and what makes it unique? Our firm focuses specifically on the business and estate planning needs of our clients, which allows us to provide high-level, complex planning to clients while still being a small boutique firm. I have a background in tax, accounting and small business management, so we feel one of our unique strengths is to integrate our legal planning more fully with the day-to-day tax and management objectives our clients are seeking. What is your LUXIERE? Time. As the mother of two small children whose spouse is currently living out of state for a year attending training as an Air Force Reserve officer, finding time to fit it all in is my biggest luxury. What is the key to being a successful attorney and also a mother and wife of a military husband? Asking for help! I have a really great team here at the firm who really makes it possible for me to give my clients great service while I’m balancing all the other parts of my life. I also have the support of great friends, family, and extra help at home who keep the kids and me on track while my husband is out of state. What is on your bedside table? A charger for my Apple watch and iPhone, a couple of books, and usually an assortment of toys the kids have left there. What is the last movie you saw? Ralph Breaks the Internet with the kids back in December. What was your favorite gift you got for Christmas? My husband got me a Wonder Woman “ugly” sweater – but it’s not really ugly at all and I wear it all the time! What is the best advice you would give your younger self? Enjoy the ride and don’t worry too much! For more information about Robben and her law practice, visit www.robbenlaw.com.

INSIGHTS INTO ORGANIZING
Professional Organizing is a mystery for most. One thing is certain, people are surprised when I talk with them about the specifics of the organizing process and chat through my most surprising takeaways. Fellow organizer, Becky Marple, CEO of BeeNeat, joins me in sharing a few surprising takeaways and useful tips. To illustrate, let’s go step-by-step through the process of optimizing your experience of walking into your home. It sounds simple, but we often find that entryways are our most cluttered spaces.
1.
Where is your real entryway?
This is based around where you walk in the door each day and where the most traffic is. Think about the way you and your family come and go. That is where your entryway should be.
2.
Create a system that will store each unique item.
Do you have a backpack, purse, hats, jackets, keys, etc? Create a home for each and every item in the entryway. Hooks for jackets and bags, key hook for keys, shoe rack with a flat top for shoes and maybe a bin for small items. Leave these items at the door so they are not strewn around the home - this has the dual benefit of reducing the appearance of clutter and making everything much easier to find when you need it.
3.
Organizing and decluttering is an emotional process more than you might think. I remember the first time I conducted a consultation and saw tears in my client’s eyes and I remember standing beside a client while they were overwhelmed by emotion - memories of loved ones mixed with pure frustration at the dead weight “stuff” they’d accumulated over the years. It’s powerful to understand how hard this process is because it keeps us from minimizing it. Knowing the process is emotional empowers us to confront the emotional complexity of decluttering and the puzzle that organizing presents. It’s a challenge, but facing it is an opportunity to move closer to living your best life.
Best Tip Create systems based on your good habits and how you already use your space.
Does this system work for you?
Analyze if this works for you and make changes as needed. Are a few items still being scattered through the home? Take a second look at the system you created. Is it not in the right spot in your home? Are the hooks too high or low and not being used? Is the shoe system too flimsy and not sturdy enough for daily use?

Surprising Takeaway
BEING THE FOUNDER OF BEENEAT, I’VE BEEN ORGANIZING OKC HOMES FOR OVER 7 YEARS AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE IS A STR ATEGIC PROCESS OF GE T TING ORGANIZED.
1.
Edit out what you no longer need to keep.
Why spend the time organizing something if you’ll never use it or think of it again? If you no longer... love it, need it, or use it, then consider selling, donating, recycling or throwing away to make room for what you do love and need.
Becky Marple CEO , BEENEAT
2.
Once you’ve done a good edit, come up with a plan for storage.
Never buy containers before you purge. Assess your remaining possessions, then determine how you’d like to organize or contain them. Containers aren’t always necessary but they can be helpful!
3.
Embrace that organizing is not a ‘one and done’ type of event.
Organizing for your current lifestyle will be fluid and requires change over time. Systems that work for your lifestyle as a newly married couple or a family with young children typically will not work well in a family with teenagers or empty nesters. Just like working out or cleaning the house, it must be maintained and kept up with time.
Best Tip There is no way around it to truly get organized, you must go through the process.
RUN, DON’ T WALK TO GET THIS PRODUC T: One of my favorite organizing products is a simple plastic shoe box container. They are the perfect size to contain a variety of items, and they have lids so you can stack and maximize space within cabinets. Place the container inside of a drawer or shelf to create a divider and turn a single drawer into a diverse organizing space. The best part about the “Our Shoe Box” from The Container Store is that they are clear plastic, rather than a cloudy finish, making it easy to see everything inside. www.containerstore.com/s/our-shoe-box/?productId=10001753&q=Our%20shoe%20box
photography by Kelsi Laine Photography
The Container Store is a leading retailer of storage and organization products in the United States. According to the retailer’s closet buyer, Jimmy Seifert, “Focus on these key areas when trying to maximize your space: the closet rod, floor space, and your door. Slim hangers, expandable add-on closet rods, hanging compartment organizers and over-thedoor shoe racks are great ways to maximize your storage space.”

Traditionally, the trimming of the Christmas Tree is a family event. Some families hold parties, others make it a family only time, creating traditions that last for generations. It is with this special family event in mind that Family Builders created the Christmas Tree Festival. The festival was held at the Civic Center Meinders Hall of Mirrors on Thursday, November 29, 2018, and was a smashing success, raising over $44,000. Eight Local artists, designers, and businesses donated a decorated Christmas tree or an artistic representation of a Christmas tree to be auctioned off at the event. The trees were a spectacular sight with every tree being unique to the artist/company inspirations. A special thank you goes to our tree donors; A-Line Designs, Arts Council OKC, Guernsey, Oklahome Homebuilders, REES, Sandler Training, Speech Pathway, and T & S Online Marketing. The evening consisted of beautiful musical performances by Tom Nix and the Canterbury Youth Choir, a silent auction filled with wonderful items from a variety of Oklahoma businesses, a signature cranberry cocktail, and the live Christmas Tree auction. The festival was an example of the giving holiday spirit and magic the holidays create! Family Builders was delighted to have the festival made possible by such wonderful sponsors; a very cheerful thank you to the sponsors that made the evening possible and a special thank you to the Santa Sponsors, The Chickasaw Nation, and Sandler Training.
M A R K YO U R CA L E N DA R F O R 2019 ! The Christmas Tree Festival will be held Thursday, December 5, 2019. Family Builders provides hope and helps families heal from the devastating effects of child abuse and domestic violence. Since 1976, we have worked with thousands of parents, helping them learn to provide safe, loving, nurturing homes for their children in order to heal the wounds of neglect, abuse, and violence. We hope you’ll join us as a sponsor for this important event in 2019. Mark your calendar for the Christmas Tree Festival kick-off party, Christmas in July on July 24, 2019, at Dunlap Codding, 5:00pm to 6:30 pm.

“The biggest compliment I have gotten, and the way I really know we accomplished what we set out to do with 701, is that I’ve had multiple people tell me they can’t remember what the building was before it was 701. That’s fantastic. That means it looks like it’s always been there,” says Brent Swift, whose team of artisans and craftspeople built the interiors and systems for the gorgeous new, luxury residential building, 701 Hudson. Lingo Construction handled building the super-structure. Swift’s team and Lingo worked in tandem with Gardner Architects on the project, a pairing that has brought central Oklahoma collaborative brilliance for years. Jeremy Gardner, principal at GA, echoes Swift’s sentiment. “We never wanted the building to draw attention to itself. That’s one of the biggest challenges in urban infill construction. We wanted the building to have a tight envelope, so we did things like carve out the balconies instead of pushing them out of the structure,” he says. 701 is definitely a thoughtfully-created vertical neighborhood. It’s relatively small, as residential buildings go, with just eleven homes within its walls; the building is like a pocket neighborhood, configured vertically. The interior details are spectacular. Every single surface is custom-created, and every detail is quietly immaculate. We recently toured the building and are pleased to share our tour with you. “Bringing 701 to life has been a two-year project. It’s allowed me to really, in a way, pay homage to an architect I’ve been really interested in, Robert A.M. Stern. When you look at his buildings, you can almost tell how the spaces within them are being used, which parts are public spaces, which are sleeping spaces. 701 feels like that. With this project there were three elements that were very important from the start. We wanted it to be an all-brick building with Pella windows and it had to be soundproofed,” Swift says. The structure boasts a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of 59, meaning the engineering is such that you cannot hear anyone in the homes above, below or adjacent, thanks to some next-level soundproofing technology. The soundproofing is well beyond common household sound eradication. One more point and it would be capable of silencing factory noise. “You could say that sound-proofing is something of an obsession of mine,” Swift says. There are two entrances into 701. A common lobby space on the ground floor may only be accessed by residents or guests who have been buzzed in via a video-driven security system. The lobby’s exuberant wall coverings add a warm elegance to a space designed for its purpose: an area to transition between the outside world and home, or a space to welcome and chat with guests.
