Meet Ingrid Carozzi, a leading sustainable floral designer, bestselling author and industry disrupter.

I

ngrid Carozzi, owner and creative director of Brooklynbased Tin Can Studios, is one of the leading sustainable floral designers in the world. Carozzi’s recently released book, “Flowers by Design,” is a beautifully crafted guide for creating sustainable floral design and showcases floral “recipes and techniques” for weddings, life celebrations and daily living. “My designs evolve connecting flowers with people and using less expensive sustainable ingredients while mixing them together,” says Carozzi, who has published three other floral design books including the best-seller, “Brooklyn Flowers.” “It’s like cooking except I’m working with flowers.” Specializing in weddings and corporate events, Carozzi and her team created the floral arrangements and installations at journalist and former “Today” co-host Katie Couric’s daughter’s summer wedding. Of “Flowers by Design,” Couric wrote: “To call Ingrid a florist is reductive. She is truly an artist whose medium is flowers. This beautiful book shows her work in all its glory—creations that remind us of the way flowers can amaze us and enrich our lives.” As a graphic designer nine years ago, Carozzi worked for the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York, where, with her eye for design and color, she created the floral arrangements for a gala dinner honoring the

king and queen of Sweden. “I also created a bouquet for the Queen which got some attention,” Carozzi says. From there a thriving new career evolved. In 2015, New York Magazine named Carozzi “Best Florist.” As Carozzi explains: “I was part of an evolving trend in an industry that was stagnant. I was creating more organic, looser and flowy arrangements using recycled vintage glass and ceramic vases and wooden crates. They looked nothing like people had seen before.” Her signature hanging garden installations showcase nature at its best. “We always use local ingredients, whenever possible,” Carozzi says. Even though Carozzi counts A-list celebrities as clients, her personal style is as unpretentious as her designs. Clients include Anna Wintour, Martha Stewart, Chef Eric Ripert, John Legend, Takashi Murakami, The Queen of Sweden, Shawn Mendes, Rachel Ray and Carolina Herrera, to name a few. “What I am most proud of is sharing my techniques, methods, and educating people on sustainable floral design,” says Carozzi, who has taught workshops in such celebrated spaces as the late artist’s Frida Kahlo’s Mexico City garden and Italy’s Lake Como. BOX BEAMS | Transforming style from contemporary to vintage or farmhouse to modern is only a box beam away. “You can change the overall look of a home with hand-hewn box beams,” said Eric Freed, founder and owner of Los Angeles-based E&K Vintage Wood. “Today’s design trend is to cover existing ceiling beams with three-sided box beams in a different style or install new ones direct to ceilings.”

HOME OFFICES | Working from home has evolved from pretty to practical. Janet Hobbs of Hobbs’ Ink Custom Home Design of Lakeway, Texas, observes “the office by the front door is history! It has gone the way of the old-fashioned parlor.” That pretty desk is now replaced by a highly functional standing desk, dual monitors, a printer, and all the essentials for today’s remote office.

SUPERSTAR KITCHENS | Sunday night suppers in the kitchen reach new levels with two-toned finish and black quartzite countertops and glamorous, yet modern pendant lighting. “Our clients want to bring the experience of dining out, in,” says Jaclyn Isaac, interior designer and owner of Doni Douglas Designs in New Jersey.

A London-based architect proves that design can be both functional and beautiful.

J

ust over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, surrounded by the Slanghoek and Waaihoek Mountain ranges, Bosjes Farm in South Africa’s Western Cape region has become a destination for weddings and a daycation spot for families looking to spend time in nature. The working farm includes vineyards and orchards, along with gardens, play areas, a spa and a guest house. And, most notably, three architectural gems including a chapel, a restaurant and a café and gift shop, all designed by South-African born London-based design architect Coetzee Steyn of Steyn Studio. The project, which presented a number of structural challenges, occurred in two phases over seven years, and was executed in collaboration with South-African based consultants. The first phase, which included the chapel and the restaurant, was done in collaboration with TV3 Architects and cndv Landscape Architects. The second phase, which included the cafe and gift shop, was accomplished in collaboration with Meyer & Associates Architects and Square One Landscape Architects. The end result is a blend of architecture and landscape that celebrates the Breedekloof Valley and truly takes your breath away. (bosjes.co.za)

THE CHAPEL | The serene sculptural form of the chapel, which is used for weddings and events, mimics the mountains in its view and appears to rest lightly on the pool of water before it. Constructed from a slim concrete cast shell, the roof draws inspiration from a biblical theme important to the farm’s owners. It has, since its completion, attracted worldwide attention and has been the recipient of numerous awards including an Architizer A+ Award as well as a Civic Trust Award. “To achieve the visual ‘lightness’ of the roof, the structure had to be simple, unifying and as structurally efficient as possible,” says Steyn. “It was therefore decided that the roof can also become the walls/columns; its own supporting structure. We created a sculptural form that emulates the surrounding mountains as well as the poetic motion sought. This lightness and motion is further emphasized by means of a strategically placed reflection pond.”

THE ARCHITECT | “Steyn had to pitch for the project. At the time, he was a young and promising architect,” says Bosjes GM and Head of Marketing Carlen Vorster. “As he grew up in Montagu, not far from the farm, he had a good sense of the natural surroundings, climate and the terrain, which was important for us.” Steyn believes design has the power to solve problems, inspire and improve lives. His passion is the creation of buildings and environments that are not only commercially practical but culturally meaningful. And nowhere is that better on display than at Bosjes Farm.

THE RESTAURANT | The more formal restaurant, Kombuis, surrounded by gardens, sculpted water features and sheltered pathways, offers visitors a stunning dining spot. “The building’s symmetrical form demonstrates an open-ended extruded gable profile, with glass panels orientated to address expansive views of the valley and mountains,” says Steyn. “Stone, concrete, glass and wood comprise the principal construction materials. These were chosen with the aim to blend the building in with the surrounding landscape.”

THE CAFÉ & GIFT SHOP | A recipient of the 2021 Prix Versailles and Architizer A+ Awards, Spens Garden Café is one of two sister buildings, the other the Winkel boutique. The seamless integration of the landscaping elements with these building structures were inspired by the simple architectural forms used by the San, who first inhabited the Western Cape. The café is built partially underground into the landscape, with gardens that wrap over the buildings. In turn the buildings are woven back into the landscape with intricate trellis structures, another nod to the San, whose grass mat huts included timber slats bent to form dome-like lattice structures that were then overlaid with woven grass mats. A sprawling lawn in front provides flexible outdoor space for a variety of functions and events, whereas the rest of the garden includes great play areas for little ones. “The gardens represent a micro version of the valley, which has now been cultivated with the new didactic gardens and new buildings nestled within it,” says Steyn. “The landscaping and buildings are located off to one side of the visual axi between the two dominating architectural features of the estate, the Manor House and the Chapel, and were carefully designed to not compete with these.”

hen the Palazzo di Vista property in Los Angeles’ exclusive Bel-Air neighborhood went up for sale in 2021, it wasn’t the millions of dollars in marble or the sweeping views that made the headlines, it was something a bit more creative. Co-listed by The Agency’s Mauricio Umansky and Compass’ Aaron Kirman, the expansive hilltop estate, on the market for $87,777,777, features an NFT (non-fungible token) art collection valued at more than $7 million and represents the potential future of the real estate business. “NFTs aren’t changing the scope of the sale but do draw attention to those that may be in the market for a new trophy property and the one-of-a-kind NFT collection that comes with it,” Umansky says. In short, NFTs are a digital property that live on a blockchain (a digital record of sorts) and are traded via unique identification codes that makes each token separate. The emerging technology is making waves in the art world where creators are finding new ways to monetize digital forms of physical works or digital-only pieces that live exclusively on a blockchain. “It’s a new experience of the space,” says Colossal Properties President Philip Braunstein. “Instead of just

looking at paint on canvas, you can rotate in all sorts of images for a more dynamic way to experience art.” The collection is an attractive addition to an already magnificent property and could be the tipping point for someone comparing one high-level home to another. However, NFTs represent only the beginning of how the blockchain may revolutionize real estate at all levels. Both Umansky and Braunstein note serious interest and growth in “smart contracts,” which essentially move the transaction process into the blockchain, allowing both parties to verify and complete most aspects of the transaction through this digital record

as opposed to paperwork and potentially lengthy bank delays. “It essentially wraps ownership into digital documentation and makes for a faster transaction,” Braunstein says. Umansky is optimistic about the long-term impact of blockchain, noting that his brokerage is “investing heavily in new technologies and advancements this year,” including smart contracts, NFTs, cryptocurrency and additional data platforms. What remains to be seen is how quickly this evolution occurs. For now, digitization isn’t replacing many of the traditional aspects of a real estate transaction, but, according to Braunstein, “It’s the future.”

ou might know hibiscus as the bright, vibrant flower often associated with the tropics, but the flowering plant has myriad health benefits beyond its beauty. Culinary and nutrition experts alike predict this tangy flower will blossom into 2022’s most popular floral flavor, whether in a cocktail, jam, main dish or tea. Not all hibiscus is edible, but the species hibiscus sabdariffa, also known as Jamaican flower, produces deep red, edible calyces used to make teas, jams and drinks. According to Healthline, it’s packed with vitamin C and antioxidants and has been proven to lower blood pressure. Other benefits claim that it might boost liver health or even promote weight loss when consumed regularly. Hibiscus is known for its tart flavor, similar to cranberry or pomegranate, and while it’s not sweet or floral, it works exceptionally well in a range of both savory and sweet dishes and drinks. In Mexico, one of the most common agua frescas is called agua de jamaica, a freshly flavored, refreshing hibiscus iced tea. Hibiscus works well as a mixer in drinks as well, like in Haus’ low-ABV aperitif pre-bottled cocktail mixes: Citrus Flower and New Fashioned. The low-alcohol apéritifs (meant to be enjoyed as an addition to a cocktail) features real fruits, herbs and botanicals, and Haus uses hibiscus for its “punchy, floral and a little tart” notes, as well as the deep crimson hue it provides each drink.

Jams and sauces are another popular way to incorporate hibiscus to emphasize its tart flavor, which pairs well with cheeses or even drizzled on desserts. Small purveyor V Smiley Preserves has a tangy Cherry Rosehip Hibiscus Jam, which is recommended alongside bloomy rinds, like brie. Kassumay also has a line of hibiscus flower fruit spread in a variety of flavors, like mango, ginger and blueberry. Many people also favor hibiscus tea, easy to make with your own hibiscus flowers or with store-bought organic hibiscus tea sachets, like those from Traditional Medicinals. Seedlip, a non-alcoholic spirits company, even has a delicious spice hibiscus margarita with hibiscus tea so you can reap the benefits of hibiscus while enjoying a mocktail with family and friends. Hibiscus is also making its way onto menus in main dishes and desserts, such as food blogger and chef Sylvia Fountaine’s hibiscus flower quesadillas, which she features on her Feasting at Home blog. She first experienced hibiscus quesadillas in Sayulita, Mexico, and was taken with the meaty rehydrated hibiscus flowers sautéed with onion, garlic and spices. In Hibiscus, a cookbook by Nigerian Chef Lopè Ariyo, Nigerian-inspired flavors and cooking methods transform everyday dishes into something spectacular such as her hibiscus chicken with its signature sauce. Chefs are also adding hibiscus to the dessert menu, with everything from ice pops and meringues to soft serve ice cream and the Hibiscus Cheesecake—with vanilla pistachio shortbread crust, whole lime purée, lime curd, sorrel gel and candied pistachio—that’s become a destination dish for Matthew Kenney’s plantbased restaurant Adesse at Selfridges in London. Kenney, well known in California where his upscale restaurant Plant Food + Wine has been a stalwart of the Venice beach scene for almost a decade, says “Hibiscus has a vibrant, lovely, flavor that pairs well with creamy textures. This is why we use it for our cheesecakes in particular. People are always exploring new ingredients, and who doesn’t love the color of hibiscus? It immediately impresses any dinner guests when plated.”

he Macallan, known for its single-malt whiskies, has recently partnered with the godfather of British pop art, Sir Peter Blake, for their third collaboration: the Anecdotes of Ages Collection. The limited-release whisky and art collection of 13 one-of-a-kind bottles of exceptional 1967 whisky “was chosen for its classic yet distinctively colorful character, which is reminiscent of Sir Peter Blake’s work of the same year,” says Sarah Burgess, lead whisky maker at The Macallan. “With notes of oak and fig leading to a burst of hazelnut and strawberry, this is a truly special single malt that finishes with complex flavors of chocolate and lightly spiced peach.” One of the bottles, The Anecdotes of Ages Collection: Down to Work Limited Edition, features distinct artwork in the artist’s unique style that tells a story reflecting a milestone in the history of The Macallan: a time when the decision was made to continue using sherry seasoned oak casks in the face of pressure to compromise. On this label, Blake chronicles that time and honors the history of the workers who devoted their lifelong efforts to whisky making. The outer box was modeled on Blake’s own art supply box. A removable panel reveals a thumbnail photography collage documenting the artist’s journey with The Macallan for the creation of the collection. A sliding drawer features Blake’s signature laser etched into the oak. Within is a leather-bound book revealing the 13 unique stories behind the full Anecdotes of Ages Collection. “For The Macallan, the past is an integral part of our brand,” says The Macallan Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell. “It has shaped our signature flavor of the whiskies we make today and will do into the future,” The Anecdotes of Ages Collection: Down to Work Limited Edition is available globally for $83,000. FULL CIRCLE The Macallan’s collaboration with pop artist Sir Peter Blake (known for co creating the sleeve design for the Beatles’ album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”) began in 1986 when he designed a label for a set of a dozen 1926 60-year-old single malts. His signature style is now represented on The Anecdotes of Ages Collection—with 13 unique bottle labels that showcase the company’s history, community, and the natural landscape of The Macallan Estate. In a perfect partnership, the collection has been captured by the lens of British photographer Mary McCartney, Paul and Linda McCartney’s daughter. Each bottle of this 1967 single malt whisky is adorned by a Sir Peter Blake designed collage style label and shot by McCartney on The Macallan Estate in locations representative of the anecdote they depict. The 1967 whisky was chosen for its classic yet distinctly colorful character, representative of Sir Peter Blake’s unique character and the year that his collage style transcended the art world into pop culture. McCartney’s photographs display the bottle in settings that reminds us of the everyday work and persistent dedication that goes into creating The Macallan’s single malts.

n order to be considered truly world class, an architect must make an innovative statement on a global stage. America’s most successful naval architect and yacht designer, Bill Tripp III, who comes from a family of nautical designers—his father created the iconic Bermuda 40 sailboat, long considered the pinnacle of classical elegance afloat—checks that box. With offices in Connecticut and Amsterdam, Tripp, whose long list of yachts includes the impressive 23-meter Black Pearl, 86-meter Aquijo and 45-meter Saudade, is currently producing the architecture and design for both a sail and power boat for top German superyacht builder Abeking & Rasmussen. Both boats feature a design he’s calling “Elemental,” which eliminates garish embellishments and brings back purity to the hull and superstructure. (trippdesign.net)

BILL TRIPP III ON THE FUTURE OF YACHT DESIGN THE VISION | “I strongly believe we need to make all methods of transport more environmentally friendly,” says Bill Tripp III. “My most recent design for a large power boat, elemental power, saves a significant amount of fuel by optimizing the shape of the hull. And while sailing yachts—if they are used as such—have inherently less of an environmental impact, there are also many ways to make them even better by using solar, hydrogeneration, bioplastics, etc. My goal for the future is to introduce as many of these design and technological betterments as possible in order to move yachting forward.”

THE FUTURE | “Personally, I find many of today’s yachts over-designed,” says Tripp. “I prefer a more linear, pure line. Yacht design needs to reflect how people live. The extensive use of glass and the fading of the line between inside and outside spaces has been prevalent in homes for much longer than in yachts. If you live in a home with beautiful views, why would you want to ‘go below’ on your yacht? I think the main living spaces should be positioned to maximize the view and natural light and allow for living as close to nature as possible, which is what most people want to do when they travel to beautiful places.”

ANYbag reimagines New York’s waste for the good of humanity.

ooted in tradition and passionately bounding toward the future, Alex Dabagh is a New Yorker through and through. Following in his father, Pierre’s, footsteps, he is re-envisioning what the modern handbag looks like, operating the last leather goods factory in the city, a family legacy that has occupied the same space for 40 years: Pietro NYC. Dabagh’s latest project is aNYbag Co., short for A New York Bag. Taking the family’s specialty in weaving leather and applying it to a sustainable mission, aNYbag uses soft plastic waste collected from within the five boroughs to create a textile that gives plastic a second life in the world of fashion. Combining materials like bubble wrap, singleuse grocery bags, newspaper, film and others, Dabagh has devised a clever method of using a heat sealer to create a long sheet of plastic. This material is then cut into thinner strips to be woven together with cotton yarn, creating a textile on their handloom. We love to think the plastic we consume is being nobly recycled, but it’s often not the case. Our feverish use of soft plastics has left the world with a problem to be solved—and in this case, art is the solution. ANYbag Co. has collected over 10,000 pounds of plastic in their first year of launch and sold 500 bags and counting. And the company is expanding, looking to introduce home goods into its collection, with products ranging from placemats, baskets and runners to outdoor furniture and planters. A big picture vision is at stake: Dabagh ‘s ultimate goal is to take the aNYbag to other cities, mimicking their setup in NYC. He aims to build workshops by creating jobs, raising awareness and closing the loop on plastic waste, leaving zero carbon footprint. “Sustainability has become a dirty word,” says Dabagh. “Everyone wants to use it, but they aren’t really making an impact on our environment. I like to think I’m creating a business to go out of business by creating a second life for material that would otherwise be single-use.” And who knew that sustainability could look so good? Influential sneakerheads have claimed aNYbag as their own,

and celebrities such as Liza Koshy and Miranda Kerr have been spotted toting the bag. Just like New Yorkers themselves, each is unique, telling a distinct and compelling story as they walk down the street. MAKING SOUND WAVES | OJAS, the creative pen name of Devon Turnbull, who in 2003 co-founded the clothing brand Nom de Guerre, thought a DIY speaker made pandemic sense. In April of 2020, inspired by a visit he made to Akihabara—the Mecca of Japanese audio maniacs—years earlier while working in Tokyo, he first announced plans for a project geared at audiophiles sheltering in place. His Artbook Shelf Speaker Kit, which can be constructed with a screw gun and some wood glue, is available on the late Off-White founder, architect and fashion designer Virgil Abloh’s web store. Abloh met Turnbull when he asked him to create a custom sound system for his “Figures of Speech” exhibition in 2019 at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Ojas’ other high-functioning audio equipment has been making waves throughout the fashion industry, becoming coveted design objects that can be found in Supreme and Saturdays stores, in the lobby of the Ace Hotel New York and inside listening bars around the world. FLOOR ART | Inspired by the beauty of the Nordic light, colors and landscape, Nordic Knots, founded on the Scandinavian tradition of functional design with a minimalist aesthetic, started as a Swedish family of three and today designs rugs in the company’s Stockholm Atelier. A new rug collaboration with Danish artist Carsten Beck Nielsen consists of three works of art—Simple object 11, Simple object 18 and Connection (the latter two pictured above). The rugs are hand-knotted with high-quality New Zealand wool with a shaggy 1.6 inch wool pile and handmade by experienced Goodweave certified weavers in Bhadohi, India. “It’s a different way of experiencing art in a home,” says Nielsen. “It’s fascinating to see how different an artwork is experienced when it’s on the floor rather than on the wall.” Because it’s made in small batches, only a few in each size are available. UNIQUE WHEELS | Chip Foose, founder of the television series “Overhaulin,” launched Foose Design, an automotive and product design development company, in 1984, before relocating to Huntington Beach in 1999. His background as an automotive designer and fabricator of electric vehicles used in the NFL and MLB, and his work with his father designing and building street rods, studio vehicles and show cars for Hollywood, allowed him to specialize in the complete construction of automobiles and related products. Hemisfear, the most renowned Foose vehicle, is the culmination of a personal dream that began in 1990, during Foose’s senior year at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. olish skin care guru Joanna Czech is fashion’s favorite facialist. The esthetician counts Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian and Anna Wintour, to name just a few, as loyal customers. Known for her science-backed approach to skin care, Czech has 35 years of experience under her belt and knows what it takes to achieve perfect skin, which explains her two year waitlist. Known for using both machines and massage techniques within her signature facials, Czech works deep in the muscles to lift and sculpt the face, combining it with LED light therapy, cryotherapy, Lyma Laser and microcurrent therapy. While the remedy for glowing skin is different for everyone, Czech recently launched her first-ever products emphasizing skin care basics. The Kit contains seven skin care

S

cent is incredibly personal, having the ability to take us back to a time and place quicker than anything else. But for most of us, our sense of smell only takes us so far. We might distinguish one scent from another when it’s strong and familiar, but we’re often lost when it comes to pulling out a minute note from something whole and powerful. Christine Nagel, who has been the inhouse perfumier for Hermès since 2016, isn’t “most of us.” Trained to not only pick up a specific citrus note in a perfume, she can also tell you what fruit it belongs to and where that fruit was from, be it California or Morocco. Having trained as a research chemist and market analyst, Nagel’s career took off in Paris in 1997, when she (and her

nose) crafted major fragrance hits like the successful Narciso Rodriguez for Her (with Francis Kurkdjian), Jimmy Choo Flash and Guerlain’s Les Elixirs Charnels collection. Nagel’s own personal appreciation for scent stems from her loved ones and informs her storied career, having divulged to Perfume Society recently that her very first “scent memory” is “the scent of the famous Italian talc ‘Boro Talco’” that her mother used for her little brother. In fact, some of her favorite smells in the world are connected to her family. This nostalgic appreciation happens to be one of the reasons why we are currently in one of the most exciting times in fragrance history. According to Nagel, “Brands are asking for more and more authentic and qualitative notes, complex fragrances with great character and signature.” Imagining what Nagel, who works at Hermès alongside famed French perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena, might come up with next is anyone’s guess. But in the meantime, let’s take Nagel’s advice about scent: “Smell everything you can, everywhere, every day.”

Last spring, Nagel introduced Hermès’ third Twilly fragrance, the unique Twilly d’Hermès Eau Ginger. Twilly scents are named after the company’s slim colored scarves with the neck of the bottles tied with their very own Twilly scarf.

n the process of restoring several architecturally significant properties in the Los Angeles area, Xorin Balbes discovered a more purposeful design philosophy that leads to more conscious living: the SoulSpace. Balbes, an architectural conservator, designer and philanthropist who is the founder of Xorin Homes, a design and architecture firm with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Maui, Hawaii, officially created his eight-stage SoulSpace process in 2011 when he published

a book by the same name to help his clients create spaces that are an extension of who they are and who they have been. Soon after publication of the book, Balbes began the revitalization of the historic Fred Baldwin Memorial Home on Maui called Lumeria Maui, a “sanctuary for authentic transformational travel,” which is focused on wellness. Through the SoulSpace stages—assess, release, cleanse, dream, discover, create, elevate and celebrate—clients, as well as readers of his book, will discover that home “is more than a place where your possessions are—it is a place where your body can recharge, where your passions can be fulfilled, where you can safely explore yourself and your desires, and where your soul can rest, be inspired and soar,” he writes in the book. In other words, an exploration of your own internal interior design. Because the home is, according to Balbes, the one environment and place that is “totally within our reach to shape, design and embed with possessions that are truly uplifting,” when someone walks into an environment “that has been carefully curated with furniture and objects that have a deep resonance to beauty, then the space itself lifts us up when we walk into that vortex,” he says. Most everyone wants their home to harbor this sumptuous “vortex.” But how does one actually cultivate a SoulSpace through design? Through his heart-centered philosophy, Balbes believes there is no such thing as a superfluous object or energetic liability to cloud judgment. Instead, he works with what remains—what we are when all illusory stories have been extracted. This is where Balbes—who designed the Sowden House, a 1926 Lloyd Wright; Talmadge Villa, the Los Feliz replica of a 17th century Italian villa and the former home of 1920s screen legend, Norma Talmadge; and the award-winning restoration of the 1926 Art Deco Security-First Pacific Bank—believes the SoulSpace process can be ignited.

Exploring Inner Space The second step to SoulSpace design is “looking at your environment from a deeply internal space, and then allowing your home to take shape based on this perspective, [which] is like looking into the mirror and seeing a reflection of yourself,” says Balbes. “It’s like our homes serve as placeholders for us to clear and release when we are ready. Anything in the room can have significance, [which] can be positive or negative,” he says. And you can start small. After meditating, Balbes suggests a simple task, such as cleaning out a drawer. What objects in this drawer no longer serve you? If the object doesn’t give you great joy or happiness, let it go. “When the drawer is cleaned out and organized, check in with yourself and feel how much more calm there is inside of you,” Balbes says. When you see and acknowledge this shift within you, you’re participating in a spring cleaning process that reflects Balbes’ design philosophy. Another Balbes-inspired design step resides in embracing empty space. For instance, if you’re holding on to an old, ratty couch because you believe you can’t afford another one, he suggests parting ways. In the “world of SoulSpace, having an empty space totally supports me in the version of my best self…because now I am dreaming about what it is that will

replace it, which is the first step in manifesting anything. Dream it. Feel it. Have it.”

Rituals of the Senses Another SoulSpace principle is incorporating play and storytelling into your design. Make it interactive, make it inviting, make it mystical. “On a daily basis, we meditate in different spaces around the house depending on the weather and lighting,” Balbes says, adding that he also implemented a “scent system” of soothing aromatherapies that are released through the HVAC system throughout the day and are meant to soothe the nervous system and bring us back to our bodies, which is where he believes true creativity and a sense of self are found. According to Balbes, it’s best to design your SoulSpace from this place where there is not much cerebral thinking involved. Balbes’ other daily ritual involves discipline. He carves out specific time each day to redesign and transform his space. He likes to think of it like a “feng-shui pick-me-up” to keep creative juices flowing, “a spring cleaning of the soul” in order to get to the truth of things. “When someone designs their SoulSpace with authenticity, then what people are stepping into is wholeness of truth that brings everything back to love because truth is love,” he says.


MY FAVORITE SPACE A designer of masterfully curated Venusian beauty, Xorin Balbes shares his favorite spaces in his home.

“UNITY; The Unification of Humanity”

To enhance the fun of quotidien life, your home … has a room dedicated to a tarot card collection. It’s one of my favorite spaces. We often find ourselves in this room, choosing a card. It’s uncanny how the cards are always telling the story of exactly where we are. So how does the design concept of SoulSpace play into the collective paradigm shift in spirituality and consciousness? “I believe that all people are already in a process of surrendering to themselves,” Balbes says. “The SoulSpace process is like having an expediter in the fast lane. I believe that rawer and more natural resources will be used in our environments, and a major part of it will involve being in nature with our true nature.” As the world increasingly becomes an echochamber of information, pollutants and general sociopolitical and psychological tumult, Balbes’ concept of SoulSpace seems more relevant than ever, especially for younger generations who are fatigued from chronic overstimulation. “Healing design for the younger generation will (inevitably) happen because so many young people are demoralized with the state of our world,” he says. “Teaching younger people that a deep connection to yourself will bring about all that you truly desire—is the key. This level of self-love always manifests itself in many ways including success and abundance.”

The most sacred part of your home is … the [primary] bedroom. The reason for this is that so much love is felt in that room and it’s also the space to wake and to sleep, which may seem, at first glance, an unceremonious and mundane part of life, which are indeed far more sacred if we shift our perceptions. The [primary] bedroom serves as the ultimate chamber for renewal, both with love, sleep and peace. It is a foundation for something, and you can make it a temple of restoration through the use of organic materials and decorative objects that elicit an intense sense of joy or tranquility. I can take a few minutes to review my day in my head, and I do my best to release any judgement I may have so that I am falling asleep with a clear mind. And there we have it, the [primary] bedroom is also a place of non-judgement. Your most meaningful possession is ... a piece of art that follows me to every project and home. “UNITY; The Unification of Humanity” is more than just a masterpiece to my eyes, it is a message to my soul, It always reminds me of what is most important—to play our part in this unification. Love in all of its expressions is the answer. The one message that I want my environments to communicate is … that LOVE LIVES HERE.

From one angle, it is covered in a coated aluminum that flows from the ground to the roof. From the waterside, the structure is encased in sculptural glass that blurs the lines between the interior and exterior. Founded in 1986 to tell the story of Amsterdam’s architectural history, ARCAM is the oldest and largest of the local Dutch architecture centers. It puts on a variety of exhibitions every year works with local designers and institutions to influence the city’s artistic future. Make sure to check out the now-permanent exhibition, Timeline Amsterdam 2000-2030, which is a timeline of Amsterdam’s more recent architectural history that takes you through its vast developments and hopes for the future. Zoltan Pali has been steadfastly changing that, nearly singlehandedly revitalizing the Southern California’s modernist architecture scene. As founder and design principal of SPF:a, Pali’s modernist masterpieces can be found all over Southern California—especially the Los Angeles area. He’s won more than 90 design awards, including an American Architecture Award in 2014 for the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in

Beverly Hills, a National AIA Honor Award for his design of Somis Hay Barn completed in 2001 in rural Somis, California, and a AIA|LA Presidential Award for leading the Executive Architecture team on the $300-million renovation and expansion of the Getty Villa Museum. Pali is known for his elegant minimalist approach to California modernism and takes on a wide array of projects, but his personal residences always stand out for their unique geometric lines and beauty. Prioritizing innovative functionality over form, Pali always takes the environment and lifestyle into account when developing a design plan for a structure. Instead of falling into the common LA trap of bigger is better, churning out sky-high mansions, he instead chooses a more subdued approach and focuses on improving the landscape. Two such projects, now on the market, epitomize his architectural artistry: The Orum House and Nightingale properties. Completed in 2018, The Orum House is a three-level private residence sitting on a Bel Air hilltop, overlooking

the Los Angeles Basin. Pali wanted the home to feel like it was floating above the elements to take advantage of its perch, so he left it as open as possible. From above, The Orum House takes on the shape of a three-wing propeller that is wrapped in glass, allowing it to melt into its surroundings and give unobstructed views of such sights as the Getty Center, Downtown and even Long Beach. Then you have the “Bronze House on Nightingale,” an unassuming slatted bronze masterpiece hidden high above the Sunset Strip with views that reach as far as Catalina Island. Finished in 2021, the design of Nightingale was inspired on the very street it sits on. “I wanted to create this flaring at the edges to evoke that feeling that we’re up here, we’re overlooking the city, and boy, we can fly if we really wanted to,” Pali says, explaining how the home is an architectural adaptation of a bird’s wing. “After that idea was struck, everything kind of fell into place.”

Pali has a knack for highlighting the innovation of residential architecture in Los Angeles and showcasing the landscape by designing stunning homes that not only take inspiration from the city, but actually enhance it. s luxury travel roars back, global travelers will finally be able to enjoy the work of more than a couple notable architects as part of a trend that emerged well before the pandemic began. High-end operators far and wide enlisted the services of those responsible for major art museums, flagship urban projects and much more to define the aesthetic of the next generation of luxury hospitality. “My own interpretation is that people are keen to get away and enjoy something—that luxury of traveling freely,” says London-based architect Stuart Forbes, who oversaw the design renovation of several Volcanoes Lodges properties in Uganda and Rwanda ahead of their 25th anniversary this year and is responsible for several important hospitality projects throughout Europe. In the case of this renovation, guests are able to enjoy

The Lana (Dubai, UAE) | While the city is no stranger to boundary pushing-architecture, the Dorchester Collection’s first Middle East property features 30 stories of Foster + Partners design, bringing something the modern metropolis hasn’t previously seen. The split-opening exterior is certainly striking along with interior touches that effortlessly blend Middle East style along with an interior that wouldn’t look out of place in some of Europe’s grandest destinations.

While that all may seem like common sense in luxury travel, the industry is getting more competitive by the day and that means architects and hotel companies alike will continue pushing boundaries, designing special experiences for both the physical structure and within the property itself.
