rom “Black Magic Woman” in 1970 to “Smooth” in 1999, Carlos Santana has accomplished the rare feat of scoring hit singles decades apart.
As he celebrates five years of a Las Vegas residency at the House of Blues, the guitarist is not only making history on the charts, he’s making a difference in the community. “I started learning from B.B. King and Tito Puente,” Santana tells Luxury Estates International. “I also learned from Dolores Huerta, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. I learned that it’s all really one breath.” The 10-time Grammy award winner is on a mission to spread “weapons of mass compassion” with the Milagro Foundation, a nonprofit organization he founded in 1998. It has funded more than $7 million in charity projects over the years and is joining forces with Habitat for Humanity to develop a community of 20 attached single-family homes in Henderson for people in need. Santana believes the ambitious effort will pay off in the long

Named after the Rat Pack’s residency at the Sands more than 50 years ago, The Summit is elevating Summerlin living to new heights - in all ways possible. Mike Meldman is the founder and CEO of the Discovery Land Company, the driving force behind the community. He spoke to Luxury Estates International about how the 555-acre project is taking shape.
LOTS AND LOCATION Known for developing resort-style residential properties in exclusive locations, the Discovery Land Company has kept a close eye on Las Vegas for years. “It’s always been the time. We just weren’t able to find the right piece of property,” says Meldman. By teaming up with the Howard Hughes Corporation, the company took advantage of a prime Summerlin location to develop The Summit. “We have bigger lots than most of the communities and views as good as anywhere in Vegas, whether you’re looking at the Strip or Red Rock.” Privacy and space are balanced by the convenience of being close to elite schools, shopping, restaurants and attractions. The Summit is just nine miles from the Strip and about 11 miles from McCarran International Airport. The first homes are already under construction with about 269 total residences expected, ranging from custom estates by the nation’s best architects to two-bedroom condos in the clubhouse.
A NEW WAY TO GOLF The centerpiece of The Summit is an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Tom Fazio. “Tom’s done 14 or 15 of our golf courses, so he’s our go-to guy,” explains Meldman. “He’s very visual and aesthetic when it comes to golf. He maximizes view corridors and the entire experience.” The golf course is already open and the only true private club in Las Vegas - strictly for residents only. In addition to its elite design, the course has spectacular views and a unique mix of style and atmosphere. Comfort stations, a staple of Discovery properties, offer golfers drinks and food on their own time between holes. “It’s not like a normal golf course,” says Meldman. “It’s an experience of golf, food and drinking. You can play barefoot. You can play in a t-shirt. You can play in board shorts. We don’t have a dress code.”

A DIVERSE PORTFOLIO Don’t be surprised to see plenty of Casamigos tequila at the clubhouse or comfort stations. The premium spirit was launched by Meldman, along with high-profile partners George Clooney and Rande Gerber, before being sold earlier this year. “It was nice for Casamigos to have all the Discovery communities purchasing the product and sharing it with the members,” says Meldman with a laugh. “A lot of our members are very influential... and it probably helped grow the brand quicker than it would have otherwise.”
A LOOK TO THE FUTURE The Summit is in high demand with those who understand the market best. About 85 percent of the sales are by local buyers with the majority of lots already sold. Could an additional development take shape nearby? Perhaps Henderson? Or on the waters of either Lake Las Vegas or Lake Mead? “Even though our communities are big by acreage and price points, they aren’t big by density,” says Meldman without giving too much away. “I think with the success we’re having, once we sell out, there will be room for another one as long as we find the right location.” As the Discovery Land Company weighs its options, Luxury Estates International will remain your leading resource on the most exclusive communities in Southern Nevada.
