The balance of art and economics was dramatically different earlier in MacDonald’s career, when he was a painter and commercial illustrator for Fortune 500 companies. He took up bronze sculpting as a hobby, which eventually led to a series of commissions for monumental works. Things changed drastically in 1988 when a fire wiped out his studio and he shifted direction to gallery work. “I went from zero to over 70 galleries worldwide in a matter of a few years,” he says. MacDonald now creates art on his own terms and lets the money and acclaim follow. He may do a commissioned piece every now and then — perhaps one every 10 years for a major client like the Olympics or the 100th U.S. Open — but he retains full artistic control by contract. When you commission a work by Richard MacDonald, you’re commissioning his inspiration. “The art has to be purely from the artist’s view of the world,” he explains. While Las Vegas is still developing its identity as an art community, it continues to be an environment where inspiration and motivation can come at a moment’s notice. That’s why Luxury Estates International (LEI) is teaming up with Trustifi, a service that can encrypt, track and postmark all electronic communication. “We value our clients like no one else in real estate,” says LEI Broker/Founder Kamran Zand. “We’re honored to be the very first brokerage to utilize the services of Trustifi.” The key is offering a user-friendly experience that’s both simple and effective. Trustifi provides a desktop application that works as a plug-in on a web browser. If anything potentially sensitive is detected on an email message as it’s being written (like a combination of numbers that could represent a social security or credit card account), users will receive an alert recommending an encrypted email. If the option is chosen, the message will be protected with military-grade encryption before the “send” button is even clicked. To receive the email, the recipient must enter a PIN that’s sent automatically by text to their cell phone from the Trustifi application. As an alternative, a dedicated password can be created that’s given verbally to the recipient with a phone call. This option is good for clients who may be apprehensive about texting or using cellphones. The email is still coming from the sender’s account, like Gmail for example, but it’s being powered by Trustifi technology.

AMANDA HOPE During a time when running around the playground and finishing homework should be among the biggest challenges in life, too many children are forced to cope with the unexpected burden of cancer and other lifechanging diseases. The volunteers of Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels are doing their part to bring joy and comfort to young patients struggling with endless doctor visits, overnight hospital stays, complicated surgeries and intrusive chemotherapy treatments. The nonprofit was founded by Lorraine Tallman in honor of her daughter Amanda Hope, who lost a five-year battle to leukemia in 2012. After establishing its mission in Phoenix, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels is now serving Las Vegas under the leadership of chapter head Kelley Fertitta. “It was love at first sight,” says Fertitta of joining the charity. “I knew I wanted to do something with kids, in particular sick kids, because I think it’s so unfair they have to spend their lives in a hospital.” Fertitta spends much of her time at the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, which supports the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada — a treatment facility that will never turn away a young patient based on a family’s inability to pay for services. “Every child with cancer receiving treatment in the state of Nevada comes through here,” says Fertitta. “Usually in a day, there’s about 80 kids who come in.” Amanda Hope volunteers organize craft days in the waiting room, teen nights and special events like

So that’s what we tell our donors — every $10 you spend can buy one backpack.” Comfycozys are now in more than a hundred hospitals nationwide and will be featured at a fashion show fundraiser for Amanda Hope at the Red Rock Resort on October 27. MICHAEL GARDNER Building a custom home can be a complicated process that involves many different players. Not everyone sees eye-toeye and the priorities of an architect can often conflict with those of an interior designer or a landscaping planner. However, with studio g ARCHITECTURE, everything operates in perfect synergy. “We take a holistic approach to design,” says founder Michael Gardner. “The process is property line to property line.” Everything is done under one umbrella with a team of inhouse professionals and managed consultants. “Our clients only have to worry about working with us,” says Gardner. “We manage all the pieces for them.” A native Australian, Gardner moved to Northern California when he was 10 years old. The business was in his blood — his mother was a kitchen and bath designer while his uncle was an architect — and he spent five years studying architecture at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. A year abroad in Copenhagen helped shape his vision for what was possible in the field. Upon graduation, Gardner found work in developing commercial projects, including stores, casinos and outdoor promenades. “It was transactional architecture,” he remembers. “All business.” So Gardner shifted gears and followed his passion for residential design. After working for others and leading projects in California, Arizona and Nevada, he saw the potential of the Las Vegas market and opened studio g ARCHITECTURE on his own in 2011.
