In the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton, Shangri-La is a mystical utopia where time seems to stand still. Isolated from the outside world, its inhabitants live a blissful life in peace and tranquillity. We therefore set out to see whether this luxury hideaway lives up to its name. In terms of location, the resort has everything one would expect of a Maldivian paradise. Villingili island is a jewel set in the glistening waters of the Indian Ocean and is situated in Addu Atoll − the Maledives’ southernmost atoll which extends across the equator. It comprises a total of 27 isles, the majority of which are uninhabited. Lush green vegetation and pristine white sand surrounded by the turquoise ocean await guests arriving by speedboat from the local airport on Gan, which is just an hour’s flight from the main airport on Male. Greeted warmly with a fresh coconut drink and flowers for the ladies, we knew straight away that the journey had been well worthwhile.
