BEST FOOT FORWARD
Taking the Spanish classic and giving it a contemporary African twist, Espadril produces handmade shoes that take the nonnegotiable elements of the iconic shoe (woven jute soles, the shape of the uppers) and adds a cool take on colour and materiality. While the range is wide, you can still have a pair customised. Available from Superbalist. espadril.co.za

A REFINED PALETTE
Plascon’s colour forecast, offering fresh hues and combinations, is always eagerly anticipated. The first category, Anonymous, is calm simplicity, stripping down to the essentials, with pale shades at its core. Terrain is inspired by raw earth – desert landscapes and colours – and is made up of warm tones of yellow, orange and minerals. Prism is about youth and fun,
bold with brights. Pause, the final theme, is a subtle and nuanced palette of sophisticated neutrals. While it seems minimal, there’s no lack of depth thanks to chalky finishes and metallic accents. The Colour of the Year ‘In the Mood’ is from the Terrain story and is a warm, grounded tone with subtle pink tints. plascon.co.za

DESIGNER
DROP-TOP Mercedes-Benz chops the roof on its stylish C-class, just in time for summer
T
raditionally, shoehorning a supercar’s engine into the bay of a cabriolet is a recipe of contrivance. Drop-tops are usually designed to act as poseurs’ vehicles, more at home cruising sun-kissed boulevards and country lanes than blasting up mountain passes at full tilt. And they’re inherently compromised. Lobbing off a major structural element such as the roof renders the vehicle wobbly. Retaining rigidity requires strengthening across the vehicle that ups mass considerably, when sports cars benefit greatly from rock-solid assembly and lighter weight. At least, that was my impression until I jumped behind the
6
Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel of the new MercedesAMG C63 S Cabriolet. It’s heavy, yes, to the tune of 1 870kg, but because Mercedes-Benz has managed to apply strengthening to all the right places, there’s nary a wobble when traversing poor-quality roads. And then, of course, there’s that magnificent 4.0-litre V8 engine that shirks off the weight and blasts the C63 S along at an incredible rate. It could have been heavier, but Benz has wisely opted to use a cloth roof, which is lighter and more compact. The result is a useful-sized boot and space for four adults. The three-layer roof, stowable in 20 seconds at speeds
TEXT Terence Steenkamp PHOTOGRAPHS Supplied
of up to 50km/h, is available in four colours and follows the contour lines of the coupé model to a tee, so the vehicle appears elegant and well-resolved. What’s more, it’s incredibly refined: Benz has taken the lessons it learnt in developing the flagship S-Class Cabriolet’s system and applied them here. But what’s most endearing about the C63 S Cabriolet is that, in stowing the cloth top, that screaming V8 engine is granted full access to your ear canals. Add a cliff face or tunnel for the sound to reverb and the Benz morphs into a true sports car. mercedes-benz.co.za

FROM LIFE
Privacy remains the most valued luxury in travel today. And solitude is all part of the magic at these three Southern African villas TEXT Michelle Snaddon and Jane Broughton PHOTOGRAPHS Michelle Snaddon and supplied
AZURA QUILALEA, MOZAMBIQUE By Michelle Snaddon
There’s nothing quite like being strapped into a lifejacket before boarding a helicopter in 30ºC heat and extreme humidity to confirm that you’re off on an adventure. But once airbourne and gliding swiftly over impossibly blue waters dotted with wooden dhows and a plethora of untouched islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago, the magic fast unfolds. So much so that, arriving to ice-cold, lemongrass-scented hand towels and a walk through a forest periodically dotted with 1 000-year-old baobabs, it all becomes part of a journey that feels like a living dream. >>

SINGITA PAMUSHANA’S VILLA 7, ZIMBABWE By Jane Broughton
his five-bedroom family villa, perched high on a koppie between dramatic boulders and mature trees, forms part of Singita Pamushana. The villa and six additional suites overlook the Malilangwe dam and are unique in design, combining intricate and decorative stonework – reminiscent of the Great Zimbabwe ruins – with thatch and glass. Up until January 2016, the villa was for the exclusive-use of Wall Street hedge funder Paul Tudor Jones, who set up the not-for-profit alilangwe Trust, which owns the private and remote Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve. Bordering Gonarezhou National Park, it’s a truly wild and beautiful corner of Zimbabwe, characterised by towering rocky outcrops, hundreds of baobabs, ancient rock paintings and abundant wildlife such as white rhino, lion, leopard and wild dog. In addition to split-level living spaces, the sprawling, self-contained villa, decorated in bold Shangaan patterns and bright colours by Boyd Ferguson, has a kids’ den, study, rim-flow pool and outdoor shower. It comes with private staff, including a personal chef, guide and tracker. ays are filled with game drives, nature walks, bike rides, sunset boat cruises, fishing and star-bed sleepouts. Or you can simply gaze out over the panoramic landscape. singita.com
AZURA QUILALEA (CONTINUED)
Azura Quilalea is now available as an exclusive-use island hideaway. Its typically Mozambican welcome of wide smiles paves the way for blissful days of watching parrotfish swimming over a coral reef metres from the shoreline or waking to discover turtle tracks in the sand. Deep grooves remain imprinted on the beach testimony to the immense effort it took to lay more than 100 eggs before returning to the water utterly exhausted. Of course, it’s an extraordinary privilege to witness these ancient rituals. You’ll think nothing of wandering from your private villa down to your beach at dawn half asleep, standing with your feet in the balmy water and slowly sipping your first cup of tea. It’s about timing your visit around the moon so that you can kayak at high tide over a rocky entrance to the mangroves on Sencar Island. It’s about letting go and letting island time take over. azura-retreats.com

TARKUNI, TSWALU PRIVATE GAME RESERVE, KALAHARI By Jane Broughton
Spanning more than 1 000km2, the Oppenheimer family’s private conservation area in the southern Kalahari provides a luxury of space and solitude that is priceless. Checking into arkuni, the private, five-bedroom getaway, gives you access to all of it. Untamed and uninhabited, the entire reserve awaits exploration by 4x4, on foot or horseback accompanied by a private guide and tracker team. Backed by the ancient, quartzite Korannaberg mountains and fronted by seemingly endless savannah grasslands and red sand dunes, the rusticchic thatched lodge has a large swimming pool, outdoor lounging areas, its own boma for starlit dining, an extensive library and a spa, where you can indulge in signature Tswalu treatments (try a desert mineral crystal body exfoliation followed by an aromatic, desert botanical-infused candle massage). tswalu.com

COLOUR IN Colour is a key element when displaying art, one that isn’t often used to best effect surprising, given how simple it is. By placing a work on a block of colour, you can emphasise elements within the piece. ere, interior designer Greg Natale (gregnatale. com) has used a strong shade of blue to pull out hues within the painting, as well as to create a sense that the painting melts into the wall.

Sculptures can seem tricky to place due to their threedimensionality their location has to be more considered than a flat artwork. n top of a piece of furniture, at eye level, keeps them in focus but unprecariously positioned. Also, grouping them gives them conte t and presence. ou can even combine a traditional sculptural piece with functional objects such as a jug or natural objects coral, crystal, fossil) for a more layered effect, such as in this sleekly chic oliform (poliform.it) interior.
Multiple works on the same subject, combined as one larger work, gives greater conte t to each individual piece. It’s an interesting alternative option if you’re looking for a large-scale artwork for a particular space. Also, take ohn acob’s (johnjacobinteriors. com) lead and don’t neglect spaces such as bathrooms art is just as necessary in functional areas but take care to protect it from steam and damp).

INTERVIEW
“STUDENT EXHIBITIONS ARE GREAT PLACES TO START TO SOURCE GREAT AFFORDABLE ART”
WHAT WERE THE DESIGN CUES FOR YOUR HOME?
We wanted to feel completely connected to the Hawaan Forest (a World Heritage Site) onto which our home faces, so we had giant, full-height steel and glass sliding and stacking windows fitted on all the forest-facing rooms. I also particularly love the combination of glass and steel, offshutter concrete and lots of timber. WHICH LOCAL DESIGNERS AND ARTISTS DID YOU GRAVITATE TOWARDS FOR THE SPACE?
I love Laurie Wiid van Heerden, Tonic, Robin Sprong, Okha and Dokter and Misses. TELL US ABOUT YOUR DRAMATIC PALETTE
I am known for my love of charcoals, greys and neutrals – but I also adore colour and use it judiciously in a neutral palette. It is powerful with decor accessories: a cushion or fabulous throw, flowers, glassware and art can inject colour. These details can be updated inexpensively when you tire of the colour. WHAT’S YOUR MOST RECENT BEST BUY?
My favourite recent purchase was a bench from Wiid Design. I am still utterly mad about it two years later.
AND YOUR BEAUTIFUL GLASS COLLECTION?
I have a collection of Guido van Besouw’s glassware, 1950s glass, Murano and glass paperweights. But I have a few dozen collections of various objects, picked up on my travels as well as locally.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU ON RECENT TRIPS?
In New York, I discovered the fascinating glass artworks by Brooklyn hipster Thaddeus Wolfe. He is a genius for his method of casting/moulding glass instead of blowing it. I’m also mad about Jaime Hayon’s work for Baccarat, his new lighting and ceramics. He’s multitalented and his graphic boldness and confidence is e citing. hese guys are young and brave. I love that fearlessness. 082 928 2277

he holiday town of Ballito continues to enjoy high volumes of property investors who want to purchase homes in the area. Since its establishment in 1954, it has been a popular destination for those looking for a change of pace. Often described as the Caribbean of the North Coast, Ballito has become a firm favourite among South African holidaymakers, foreign tourists and property investors alike. INVESTMENT GO-TO To keep up with the consistent demand for property, Ballito has
28
become one of the fastestgrowing nodes in the country, says Clive Greene, sales associate at RE/MAX Dolphin Realtors. Over the past 12 years in particular, the region has attracted a great deal of development. “After Zimbali Coastal Resort launched in the late 1990s, it has become a household name in South Africa,” says Greene. “It is known as one of the country’s most sought-after real estate developments and has provided most investors with huge capital growth. Simbithi Eco Estate followed, which again has resulted in excellent appreciation in value, yielding fantastic returns
on investment. The town has since mushroomed and developments such as Brettonwood and Dunkirk have all reached maturity. Moving north, the huge Palm Lakes development near Tinley Manor is also selling at an unprecedented rate.” In addition, the opening of King Shaka International Airport, just 10km from the town, and the N2 interchange have ensured that the area is set for exponential growth. “Other developments that have more recently added to the area’s popularity include a new 64 000m2 shopping centre to accompany the existing lifestyle shopping

centre. With these two developments, Ballito offers a complete mall and entertainment experience,” says Greene. BEAUTY AND LIFESTYLE Despite the influx of development, the area has still managed to maintain the unique holiday destination atmosphere that has made it so popular over the years. It is a combination of the area’s beauty and lifestyle offering that continues to allure property investors to Ballito’s shores. The consistent demand for property in Ballito has resulted in home values steadily rising over the long term. A NEW PROJECT “In the middle of all this growth, on one of the last remaining sites left to develop in Ballito, developers Santo Pulvirenti, Hilton Hall and Rick Pulverenti have launched an
exciting new project called The Dunes. They are well-known for many high-quality developments in Durban, Umhlanga and Ballito,” says Greene. One of the first of its kind, this uniquely crafted sectional-title development is located in Ballito overlooking the prestigious Zimbali development and natural forest. Consisting of 34 freestanding units, which have been built to high standards, this development has all the luxuries residents could wish for, while using proven technologies that reduce the development’s environmental impact. ECO AWARENESS “Each home has been designed with energy conscious construction in mind. Every unit will be equipped with 35m2 of roof-mounted solar panelling, batteries and inverters, and will have a 10-amp connection
to the main power grid for backup in case of inclement weather,” says Greene. “This design ensures that all homeowners will, in essence, be able to generate most of their electricity using the sun as their source of energy. Together with energy efficient appliances such as gas stoves and geysers, this will ensure uninterrupted power and significantly reduced energy costs.” Continues Greene: “It is an indisputable fact that electricity costs are going to continue to rise. However, through innovations in technology we can to some degree offset this. Harnessing the power of the sun has become part of new development in the established world today and this exciting development allows new homeowners the freedom of knowing that their energy costs can be controlled going forward.”

THE POOL HOUSE AVAILABLE TO RESIDENTS ON DESIGN, SECURITY AND AMENITIES The development features eco-friendly natural finishes such as wood and stone. Contemporary openplan architecture and superior internal finishes complete the picture for each individual home.
“The estate is secured with an access-controlled guarded gatehouse and 24-hour security,” says Greene. “The Dunes is also within proximity to the new Junction Mega Mall, Netcare Alberlito Hospital, excellent schools, worldclass golf courses and the famous beaches of the Dolphin Coast.”

ith its contemporary design and wood and white detailing, it hardly seems possible that this house was originally a modest suburban Durban home. “It used to be a little face-brick house on the hill with a picket fence at the bottom of the garden,” say current owners Greg and Giorgina Slotar, who live there with their young daughter, Jordan. “When we bought it, it had already been somewhat renovated, with a new facade, bathrooms and open-plan living area.” The house’s main attraction was the uninterrupted sea view, which e tends from the Bluff all the way to mhlanga. The couple could also see the house’s potential and soon set about additional renovations. “We demolished the outside entertainment and pool area, changing it completely. It was a massive job that required major earthworks and manual labour through some of the worst rain Durban has seen in years,” Greg recalls.

The new space was certainly worth the hard work, as it has extended their living area dramatically. The covered patio with its exposed beams opens directly from the kitchen and dining area, connecting to a bar area, above-ground swimming pool and raised deck perfect for lazing in the sun. “We have the best time out here with our friends and family. We love entertaining and having the people we care about around us, and this space lends itself so perfectly to that,” says Greg. o enhance the flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces, they replaced the laminate floors with a wood-look vinyl that runs throughout and furnished the patio in the same style as the rest of the house – a combination of rawwood pieces and industrial edginess with subtly glamorous details such as a pair of beaded chandeliers, sequinned cushions and reflective white tiling around the swimming pool. “We love a contemporary yet rustic feel and are both outdoorsy people who enjoy soaking up nature and being on the beach. Ceating a calm natural feel, with the odd retro piece, is how we feel most at home,” says Giorgina. “Bringing in the natural textures of wood and wicker was a great way to create warmth as the white and grey palette could have been rather clinical on its own.” A standout piece is the oversized sofa upholstered in Nguni hide, a must-have for Greg, although Giorgina was less enthusiastic. But, she now admits, it fits seamlessly into the home. “We originally called it the moo couch but since we got married it’s become the lobola couch,” she adds. With the entertainment and living area complete, the couple set their sights on giving the main bedroom and en-suite bathroom an overhaul. “The bathroom was small, with a single vanity, a pokey shower and a bath my husband couldn’t fit into, iorgina recalls. hey knocked out the wall between the bedroom and bathroom with the help of Amend-a-Home to create an open-plan space and raised the bath on a platform so that the sea views can be enjoyed while soaking in the large freestanding tub. The main bedroom is now one of their favourite areas. “It’s perfect for when we want to unwind: either to snuggle in on a rainy day with a movie while looking over a stormy sea or to enjoy a perfect day, reading a book,” she says. Giorgina, a clinical nutritionist, spends a lot of time in the kitchen. “Growing up with an Italian mom had me experimenting in the kitchen from a young age and my work inspires me to nourish and nurture my family through food,” she says. It’s this focus on family, further evident in the framed photos and personal mementos that abound in the house, that makes this chic space a truly warm and welcoming home.

comfortable seating and a large dining table encourage relaxing and socialising; a pair of beaded chandeliers and chunky glass vases are minimalist without being mundane; vibrant
