GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Effortless summer style was the goal for Poetry’s spring/ summer 2017 ranges. Inspired by a greenhouse in full bloom and the architectural forms of tropical foliage, the collection highlights natural colours and textures, leafy prints and easy, timeless shapes. There are formal items, too, featuring lace and embroidery as well as fashion-forward footwear (look out for the espadrilles) and on-trend accessories. poetrystores.co.za

TOWARDS A CONCRETE MOUNTAIN
We’re suckers for attractive feats of architecture, especially when they have biomimicry characteristics, such as the FPT University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Designed by Vo Trong Nghia Architects, construction of the university campus began in June 2016 and, aside from looking like a growing mountain that blends into the natural landscape and blurs the line between concrete and greenery, it has been described as
5
the city’s new icon of sustainability. The copious amount of trees and vegetation as part of its design will reduce the building’s carbon footprint and greatly improve the air quality of the surrounding area. votrongnghia.com
AN ANOINTED BUILDING
The National Museum of African American History and Culture, a recent addition to the Washington DC culture scene, is an ode to the historic milestones of African-American culture. The David Adjaye-designed museum follows the prolific people who have shaped the history of the States. Aside from its intriguing appearance, this piece of architecture is also tipped to be the most sustainable national museum ever built. nmaahc.info

LIVING LEGACY
Although Zaha Hadid (pictured top left) passed away earlier in 2016, her legacy of forward-thinking and cutting-edge design lives on. One Thousand Museum by Zaha Hadid Architects is the late architect’s first residential building in the western hemisphere. The new development, brought to market by Sotheby’s International Realty, is situated in downtown Miami in the epicentre of the city’s cultural and artistic precinct.
Once complete, the 62-storey tower will contain 83 residential units, with the fittings in every one reading like a designer catalogue of the world’s most sought-after interiors brands: Dornbracht, Gaggenau, Poliform, Porsche Design Studios. 1000museum.com

OLD VALUES Although late to the SUV party, Jaguar’s F-Pace is nonetheless a great first attempt

onsidering the Leaping Cat is one half of muchloved British company Jaguar Land Rover (the second half of that name entails rugged, goanywhere off-roaders), it’s somewhat surprising that it’s taken the aristocratic British brand this long to develop its own SUV. Even more surprising is the fact that, underneath its svelte skin, the new F-Pace is not simply a Land Rover re-engineered to capture the character of the Jaguar brand, but a vehicle that shares its architecture with the most recent round of XE and XF sedans. Those vehicles are some of the most unashamedly sporty in their respective segments – and therein lies the clue to the F-Pace. If you arrive at the F-Pace unacquainted, you may
6
expect it to drive like any other family SUV. However, it takes but a trickle down the road to realise that, despite its lofty height and even loftier aspirations as a family holdall, this is a Jaguar through and through. Even the humble 2.0-litre turbodiesel, the entry point to a range that crescendos in the scalding 35t AWD S model (and its immense R1.2 million price tag), asks questions that the chassis never fails to answer. Feeling for all the world simply like a bloated family hatchback instead of the large Cat it is, the F-Pace shrinks around you as you start to explore its dynamic talents. That’s not to imply it’s a onedimensional creature, though. In a careful balancing act, Jaguar has made the ride comfortable, the seats cossetting, the cabin spacious and the boot big.
Enveloping the driver and passenger in two distinct zones, the cockpit is a master class in striking design that’s also effective in day-to-day use. Yes, some of the material quality is no match for that of its main rival, the equally athletic Porsche Macan, and local specification is less than generous when it comes to standard features, but the F-Pace’s cabin feels warmer, more inviting, less austere. And isn’t that the ethos of any Jaguar? They might not always be the best in their respective classes, but they make motoring special. Where the German carmakers aim for perfection, in the process occasionally sacrificing soul, the UK manufacturer produces cars that craft a sense of wellbeing. And kudos to Jaguar for refusing to stray from that approach in an alien segment. jaguar.co.za

rom the jagged outcrop of Happiness Rock, mist rolls towards Oaklands Country Manor, which is curled atop Van Reenen’s Pass like a napping cat. Polo ponies graze along the white-post-and-rail fence that runs past the oak plantation towards the estate. This boutique country manor, located midway between Durban and Johannesburg, makes for an ideal weekend of stick-and-ball, combined with fine dining in an idyllic country setting. The Tully family’s six dogs welcome guests as though they are members of the clan. Caroline became a Lady and Oaklands’ heiress when she married Sir Hervey James Hugh Bruce-Clifton, a former major in the British Army. After his untimely passing, her two sisters and brother joined the Oaklands family, each adding their expertise. Executive head chef Kathy Romer-Lee was chef to the Dahl family when Roald was penning Revolting Recipes. While Annie Barnard takes charge as hotel manager, brother Simon Tully is the marketing manager. As the province’s oldest stud farm, Oaklands has an intriguing history. Bob Hall, a British millionaire, bought it for his actress wife in 1860. Later, a clairvoyant owned it until Transvaal cricket captain David Dyer called it home. Today, Kathy runs her kitchen with a farm-to-fork philosophy. What isn’t grown in her vegetable garden is sourced from neighbouring organic farmers. She mixes in some of Dahl’s magic into the epicurean dishes on her

seasonal, gourmet menu. Caroline has also launched her fermented foods range, which will be on sale at their gift shop. It’s this honest, farm-style food ethos that upholds the highest quality, which has garnered Oaklands the Best Country-Style Eatery in KwaZulu-Natal at the 2016 Eat Out awards. But Oaklands is best known for its biannual polo tournaments, frequented by South Africans and Brits each April and October. Ten teams of four players may be hosted at Oaklands. Even if you’re not a polo player, you can cheer from the sidelines with your binoculars in one hand and a glass of artisanal gin in the other. Join in the half-time tradition of divoting, which involves stomping on the earth the horses and mallets have kicked up, before returning to your gourmet picnic lunch to watch the rest of the game. Caroline hosts some of the country’s top polo coaches, who can teach beginners the rules of the game, how to handle a mallet and the proper riding style. Meanwhile more advanced players visit for stick-and-ball lessons followed by practice chukkas (the seven-minute-long segment of a polo match) – often the Tully family (all of whom are seasoned riders) join the fun. Guests are offered a five-day polo package, including accommodation, tuition and equipment. After a few games, retreat to the Last Post Pub, where you can jubilantly clink your glasses in celebration of your successful ride-offs and goals against the other team, and savour their assortment of fine South African wines. The pub is well-known, even among locals, for its extensive collection of school and polo club neckties that hang from the wooden rafters. Each is accompanied with an entry in the ledger that describes its origin or previous owner.
INSIDER’S GUIDE GETTING THERE Oaklands is on the Schaaps Drift Road, Van Reenen, about 30km from Harrismith. If you drive the N3 route frequently, you might want to try the scenic De Beers Pass as an alternative to Van Reenen or take the beautiful back road between Ballito and Pietermaritzburg via Wartburg. Alternatively, if you’re the active type, you might enjoy All Out Adventures (alloutadventures.co.za), set in spectacular surroundings just off the R74. DISCOVER CLARENS Set aside about two hours to drive via Golden Gate Highlands National Park to the characterful village of Clarens and soak up the views along the way. Known as an artist’s haven and with more than 20 galleries to browse, it’s worth leaving Oaklands early to fully enjoy this round trip. AS THE PROVINCE’S OLDEST STUD FARM, OAKLANDS HAS AN INTRIGUING HISTORY
Soon they’ll have more ties to add to their collection as polo is steadily growing across South Africa, with many young players learning to play the game of kings, as it is known. “Polo is highly addictive – it’s an adrenaline rush,” Simon explains. “It’s one of the world’s most dangerous sports and that’s what makes it so thrilling. It’s also a challenging sport as the level of skill needed is high.” Guests often learn how to gallop in the training arena before going on an outride around the estate’s perimeter, past the three dams where you can fish for bass on a catchand-release basis or go canoeing or bird-watching. Keep a lookout for the white-winged flufftail, rare Rudd’s lark and wattled crane, which are endemic to this region. You’ll never bore on a visit to Oaklands Country Manor: there’s much to do, from mountain biking (the longest trail is 80km) and hiking to tennis, table tennis and volleyball.

Take your clubs for a warm-up round at the nearby Harrismith Golf Course. But it’s not only the homely ambiance, polo and fine dining that attracts visitors. The region’s historical highlights include the battlefields of the Boer War, where Winston Churchill – who was a journalist stationed in South Africa at the time – acted as a message courier to and from Spion Kop, where Mahatma Gandhi served as a stretcher-bearer in the Indian Ambulance Corps and South Africa’s General Louis Botha, alongside other generals, led the Boers to victory. To delve further back in history you can visit the San rock art nearby. he word “antiques” may conjure up images of stuffy armchairs ill-suited to a sophisticated urban setting. But consider that the start of the modernist design movement – with its less-is-more doctrine – is at least 100 years old. That means the iconic Eames chromed metal chair with moulded plywood seat is possibly as much of an antique as a walnut Biedermeier secretaire. Antiques are not limited to furniture, either. Artworks, clocks, cameras, coins, jewellery, ceramics, clothing, books, toys: these can all be classified as antique. But are they relevant in today’s modern lifestyle? “Apart from the cultural worth attached to older artefacts, which translates into monetary worth, antiques are something to have fun with – investments that you can actually enjoy,” says Lynn Grant, owner of Take It For Granted. “The most successful investors are the ones who are not afraid to take chances and be bold – those who dare to be different. They do not collect according to a prescribed style or period but instead are guided by their instincts. They
develop their passion by collecting individual pieces that are outstanding in their own right and are thus valuable.” They also follow different avenues of i nterest, mixing older items with newer ones in ways that contrast with and highlight various qualities. The results are personal interiors that are eclectic and engaging, filled with a diverse mix of treasures. Each space becomes an extension of the personality of the person who created it. This is where the modernity and relevance lies. Selecting pieces can be a challenging task. “Buy the best and oldest object you can, and try for a first-edition piece,” advises Jeremy du Mughn, owner of Jeremy Stephen Antiques. He adds, however, that age on its own is not a guarantee of desirability. “Quality and association with a known designer are important to determine value.” Antique dealers are a key element to building your own collection. The best are those who are knowledgeable and honest about their particular field and they inevitably have the best stock, too. Recognised associations are always a reliable

choice. The two annual South African Antique, Art and Design Association (SAADA) Fairs – Cape Town in February and Johannesburg in October – are excellent forums for potential investors to be guided. Riaan Bolt, a SAADA member, agrees: “It is possible to do well by following trends. But successful investors in antiques and vintage items are more likely to be individuals who break the conventional mould and follow their hearts. They are also people who recognise that investing in such collector’s pieces is a long-term commitment. The four elements that make for a good choice, in any field, are always the same: quality, rarity, condition and provenance. The early Cape furniture pieces I deal in are exceptional not because they are in vogue right now and fit well in contemporary South African homes – which they incidentally are and do – but because they all fulfil those uncompromising tenets.” It sounds like an almost guaranteed success if one is willing to wait, buying and selling at the right times. But how do politics and economics have an impact? “In some respects, antiques can be somewhat immune to the immediate political and economic climates,” says Peter Mrkusic, part owner of online Bancroft Antiques shopping platform. “Unless the value of an item is deeply rooted in a particular environment – such as an artwork by an emerging South African artist – an antique can have global appreciation and thus work as a form of international currency.” Where is the real money likely to be in the future? What kind of items are those looking to invest likely to covet? Spend some time trying to answer these questions successfully and you may end up enjoying your investments while their value increases beautifully.

INTERVIEW
“I SEE THE WORLD IN AN UNCONVENTIONAL WAY, ALLOWING ME TO QUESTION EVERYTHING” ALICE TOICH Artist
Artist Alice Toich finds painting to be a form of therapy, a way to help others live better TEXT AND PRODUCTION Julia Freemantle PHOTOGRAPH Karl Rogers
WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS PARTICULAR CRAFT?
It’s funny that you should say craft. It really is. Although an endless debate rages between what is art or craft, I’m unconcerned by it. I believe my practice is greatly inspired by merging the use of my hands and my mind. What has guided me to becoming an artist is simply the need to communicate and share, a desire to slow down and unpack daily happenings, to question issues. After studying advertising, I realised so many people don’t understand how contrived these type of messages are. I would rather spend my life creating useful media for people, something that helps them live better, not feel more insecure and helpless. I am not afraid of thinking of art as a form of therapy. Secondly, I find the pace of modern life exhausting and overstimulating. I often daydream about being in another era or time space. Being in my studio is an attempt to reclaim my life at my own pace and give seriously and honestly to something that can enrich others.
WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING?
Making people smile or feel as though they are connected in some way to beauty. Being able to help people feel more normal for not feeling normal. WHAT HAS BEEN A CAREER HIGHLIGHT TO DATE?
Being chosen for a scholarship to study a month of intensive drawing at the Grand Central Atelier in New York in 2014. My art residency in Istanbul for two months was a big highlight, too. And having my portrait of a friend make it to the top 100 of South Africa's first Sanlam National Portrait competition while I was still studying was a huge honour.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO READS THIS AND THINKS, “I WANT TO DO THAT”?
There are many ways you can add to the fabric of humanity in a positive way. If creating art is one of those ways, then go for it. While the romanticised perception of what it is to be an artist is not that simple, this will be your own journey.
HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF ON THIS PATH?
It was no accident that I chose to pursue art as a career. It has come about from a lot of time spent gaining self-knowledge and deciding that this is the best way I can add to the world using my talents. My thought processes have always been creative. I see the world in an unconventional way, allowing me to question everything.
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU’D KNOWN BEFORE YOU EMBARKED ON THIS CAREER?
It takes a long time to create a sustainable setup for yourself that can economically feed your practice. If you want it to be valuable, not just trendy, it will take even longer. alicetoichart.com

2 POOL PAVILIONS
If budget and space allow, a separate structure specifically for poolside living and entertaining is first prize. And it doubles as storage for towels and outdoor cushions, pool toys, and braai utensils and equipment. 1 In this home in Amagansett in East Hampton, New York, the pool pavilion, designed by iCRAVE (icrave.com), is the space for ultimate relaxation. Essentially three rooms within a wood-andsteel structure, it contains a spa, a bedroom and, in between, an outdoor living node. The pool itself mimics a beach at its entrance and stretches across the length of the pavilion

2 The design for this pool pavilion by architect Brian Korte (bk-architect.com), while a partner at Lake Flato Architects, was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona pavilion and Philip Johnson’s Glass House, with extensive use of steel beams and glass

CUTTING EDGE
3 The water’s surface flows apparently seamlessly into its surrounds and looks like a reflecting piece of glass in this pool at Vanilla View Villas (vanillaviewvillas. com) just outside Tofo in Mozambique. Lying flush with the wall, this pool enables an interesting approach to decking, with the extension over the pool’s surface giving the impression of floating when lying on the memoryfoam outdoor loungers
INSIDE OUT
4 & 5 The Gallery House in Perth designed by Craig Steere Architects (craigsteere architects.com.au) and House Ber in Midrand by Nico van der Meulen Architects (nicovd meulen.com) are beautiful examples of this outside-flowing-in concept
Functioning in a similar way to rim-flow pools, knifeedges also have a perimeter overflow that catches the water and funnels it back into the pool. The difference is that in knife-edge designs the overflow functionality is hidden, making the pool perimeter appear flush with the water’s surface.
An indoor-outdoor connection and the elegant execution of this flow is pivotal in contemporary pools and pool-pavilion design.

Q&A: JEROME DAVIS FOUNDER OF ECO POOLS
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS IN ECO-POOL DESIGN?
As the market has matured, there have been vast improvements and valuable learnings – better technology, for example, has led to advanced filtration with significantly less algae. Because of their strong visual appeal, the potential of eco-pools to link the garden with the living space and the healthy bathing experience, natural swimming pools are now being seen as an asset and an investment, and may substantially increase the value of a property. A further area of development has been
5
through our Eco Pools Horticulture division, where a diversity of new wetland plant species have been adapted for use in our Eco Pools. The result is a wide range of textures, flowers and colours.
is made easier by the cleaner, more reliable filtration technology now available, while their guests enjoy a more relaxing and healthier swimming option. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN ECO-POOL?
HOW POPULAR ARE ECO-POOLS LOCALLY?
There has been significant growth in natural swimming pools in South Africa over the past few years. The call for natural pools has burgeoned as consumers become savvier to their value and the dangers of chemical pools, and the demand for Eco Pools (naturalswimmingpools.co.za) in hotels, guesthouses, health spas and game lodges has increased markedly in the last few years. The decision for a manager or developer looking for green credentials
The vast majority of people who opt for Eco Pools are doing so because of the many health factors, less maintenance, the significant (up to 70%) saving in electricity and the fact that they’re beautiful year-round rather than just a place to swim for a few months of the year. As our natural environment is compromised more and more, the simple luxury of having a slice of nature to dip into whenever desired is superior to anything else in the built environment.

A DIP WITH A VIEW
Nothing enhances a sense of oneness with the elements like submerging yourself. Add to that incredible scenery and you have pure bliss. 6 The Lord Milner Hotel pool in Majiesfontein (matjiesfontein.com) pays homage to its country location with a low werf wall that allows a sense of seclusion without sacrificing the views 7 Long and lean, a design in Knysna by Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen (saota.com) is oriented entirely towards the expansive ocean vista and natural vegetation
AU NATUREL
While eco-pools are a growing trend (see box), pools that look like they’ve been carved by nature have always been a firm favourite. 8 The pool at Singita Boulders Lodge (singita. com) in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve coheres with the surrounding organic shapes of the area, particularly those of the boulders on which the site rests, and reflects the nest-like ceiling of the dining pavilion
