BRIDGE OVER (UN)TROUBLED WATER
Design firm NEXT is renowned for designing jaw-dropping public bridges. Their newest masterpiece: the 185m-long Lucky Knot bridge in Changsha, China, the result of winning an international competition to design the city’s bridge over the Dragon King Harbour River. It was created with recreational, tourist and ecological goals in mind and connects many levels – the river, road and upper park – in the shape of a knot, hence the name. In Chinese folk art, a knot represents luck and prosperity. nextarchitects.com

FOR THE JET SET
Conceived as a luxury, floating villa, the Unidentified Floating Object (UFO) 2.0 is – as its name suggests – a futuristic fibreglass and carbon floating structure. Designed by the group of Italian engineers behind the Jet Capsule, the floating villa is comprised of three different levels: the main living area with kitchen, storage space and bathroom, a sublevel including a bedroom with a view of the seabed and a 50m2 terrace that works as an upper deck. The first is expected to be completed by 2018. jetcapsule.com

SUITE VIEWS
Petite German artist Jeannine Platz recently chose Cape Town’s Atlantic Suites’ guesthouse in Camps Bay as the 41st ‘Suite View’ in her series of 50 paintings done from hotel suites around the world. Her style is unique: she paints fast with her hands, scrapers and toothbrushes, but never travels with a paintbrush – only two rolls of canvas and her infectious personality. With no fine art training, and a box of surgical gloves, she gets to work, mixing the colours on the back of her hand. suiteview-artproject.com, atlanticsuites-campsbay.com

How to save on your home insurance TEXT Patrick Cairns PHOTOGRAPH iStock by Getty Images
ENSURE YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY FUND TO PAY FOR SMALLER ISSUES
I
n difficult economic times, many South Africans are looking for ways to reduce their monthly expenses. Often, this includes insurance. Because it is something of a grudge purchase and you don’t necessarily see its value until you need it, household insurance can look like an obvious place to save money. Doing away with it altogether or cutting back on your level of cover should not, however, be genuine considerations. If you are underinsured – or not insured at all – when disaster strikes, this could end up costing you far more than you ever saved on your premiums. That said, it’s possible to reduce what you are paying without taking lesser cover. All you need is an understanding of how insurers evaluate you and your risk, setting your premiums accordingly. To do this, they take a number of things into account, including your credit record and claims
6
history. Consumers with a better credit record are considered lower risk and will be charged lower premiums. This is another reason for managing your debt prudently and making sure you always keep up with monthly payments on items such as cellphone contracts.
ARE YOU HIGH RISK?
In terms of your claims history, consumers who claim too often will be flagged as high risk. It is the frequency of claims that matters, not the size. If you make one claim for R200 000 in five years, an insurer would not be concerned but if you claim 20 times at R10 000 each over the same time period you would be considered high risk. For that reason, ensure you have an emergency fund to pay for smaller issues. In the long run, this could save you a lot of money.
PREMIUM NEGOTIATION
In addition, many insurers may charge a lower premium if you bundle your insurance. You could potentially save money by using the same company for your vehicles and home. You should, however, be willing to shop around. The short-term insurance market has become incredibly competitive and companies are trying to attract more business by offering lower prices. Don’t accept whatever annual increase your insurer offers you. Most companies will negotiate on the size of the yearly premium increases. They don’t want to lose your business. Finally, if your insurance cost really is getting too much, your best option may be to increase your excess. The higher this is, the lower your premiums will be. If you have an emergency fund to meet this amount, you can save money every month without compromising your cover.

Now in its seventh generation, BMW’s 5 Series executive sedan provides the perfect foil to the SUV TEXT Terence Steenkamp PHOTOGRAPH Supplied

hen you commute home after work, take a few minutes and count the number of BMW X5s you spot. Then compare that figure to how many 5 Series sedans you see. I’d bet the SUV outnumbers the sedan and by a considerable margin. I attempted this e periment in Cape Town’s City Bowl and noticed nine X5s compared with a single Series. This market shift to off roaders took place in the not too distant past. And that’s somewhat odd. South Africans used to love their large family saloons. ids were ferried to school in them and, come December, we filled the commodious boots with paraphernalia before departing on holidays to the coast. ut then the ermans launched lu ury S s two decades ago. onsumers couldn’t resist their elevated stance and the suggestion that the driver ventured off the beaten track in between surfing, kayaking and gardening. These days, the S is the de rigueur family solution for those with the means. And I find that peculiar. hy ecause S s are more e pensive than their four door counterparts with which they share their main componentry; are heavier and therefore heavier on fuel employ e pensive, drag reducing four wheel drive systems that will never kick into gear on an off road track; and are cumbersome to drive and park.
8
I pondered this while sitting behind the wheel of a d one of four 5 Series models to hit South Africa in February) on a deserted coastal road south of ortugal’s capital, isbon. I had ust driven the car with gusto, but the trip computer registered an average fuel consumption of ust . litres per km. hat’s more, earlier in the day while ascending a steep, sinewy mountain pass, the d accelerated harder than a olf TI and was nearly as entertaining. And yet the new Series was also whisper quiet inside, rode beautifully, provided loads of space for five occupants as well as their luggage in its massive litre boot and contained every piece of ground breaking technology you’d find in the flagship Series, including the ability to park itself without the driver ensconced behind the wheel. Ah, but sedans aren’t as safe as large S s, I hear you counter. According to uro A , which crash tests every new car in urope before awarding them a rating out of five stars, there’s little difference between the protection offered by a four door versus an off roader. So, go on, give the venerable sedan a second chance. ou’ll be doing your pocket, and the environment, a favour. And, if you make it a 5 Series, you’ll just happen to net the market’s best new e ecutive saloon. bmw.co.za

WELCOME TO THE
FUTURE
No longer a futuristic niche for tech geeks and luxury homeowners, smart homes have become an integral part of life, raising your home’s IQ and its value TEXT Jocelyn Warrington PHOTOGRAPHS Henrique Wilding, David Ross, supplied

oday’s high-tech home knows when you’re on your way back from work, switching on the lights, turning up the heat or air-con and streaming your favourite music in preparation. It knows when the best times are to run the washing machine, clean the dishes and water the garden. hen you leave a room, the lights are turned off. At the intersection of rapidly developing technologies such as the internet, mobile communication and renewable energy, home automation has taken a significant technological leap forward over the last few years. Where, until fairly recently, automation was mainly focused on installing controllable power outlets or light switches and wiring infrared controls around the house, today’s wireless networks (3G, LTE, Wi-Fi, LoRa) and smart devices with wireless communication interfaces (Bluetooth, ZigBee, Wi-Fi) allow the user to take home control to the next level.
16
The smartphone and tablet revolution has finally brought the personal, universal remote-control device into the home, says Ivan Potter, MD of Gauteng-based home automation product and services supplier iLED (iled.co.za). “The days of wall panels are gone,” says Potter. “We live in the age of apps, which are easy to operate. Their employment in home automation is simply an extension of this lifestyle.” With smartphone voice assistants having entered the mainstream market, Star Trek-style voice control for smart homes may well be the next frontier. “Voice recognition software is becoming increasingly viable. Telling your home to switch on certain lights, change the channel on your TV or arm your security system while lying in bed is the next big thing,” maintains Demos Rouvis of Nuru Intelligent Buildings (nuru.co.za), home automation specialists with offices in ape Town and ohannesburg.

SMART THINKING
With improved usability and new capabilities, the motivation for installing smart home technologies has become broader, too. The vision of green buildings capable of significantly reducing energy and water consumption is finally becoming real. It is in the eco efficiency arena that the most exciting developments in home automation are taking place, claims Brad Sale, owner of residential automation systems provider Elas Africa (elasafrica.co.za). Monitoring current and past power consumption and identifying load profiles provides the basis for intelligent power management. “Smart appliances coordinate their operation with smart meters (home gateways), reducing overall energy consumption and avoiding peak loads,” says Sale. apabilities include heating control to manage room temperature, smart lighting to control illumination and water-consumption reduction through sensor taps and plant watering systems.

Studies report that automated lighting leads to domestic electricity savings of up to 30%, with automated heating saving between 15% and 20% of energy. Sale notes, too, that smart homes allow for integration with smart power grids. These, driven by the rise of renewable energy generation, are in the process of being built globally. “Smart meters and smart gateways can only work if a home control and automation infrastructure is in place,” he says. “This infrastructure can then interact with the supply and demand-driven electricity cost in smart power grids and schedule high-energy processes, such as turning on the geyser, operating the dishwasher or washing machine, and cooling the fridge or freezer. In this way, smart home automation can contribute to significant energy savings without impacting the comfort levels of residents.” Indeed, home automation standardisation based on open internet technologies, omnipresent smartphones and sensor-equipped devices has been the catalyst for manufacturers to start integrating control functionality into their products as a default. According to Potter, the broad wave of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has embraced the smart home, making it an integral part of its concepts. “These intelligent devices can communicate with each other, forming a network around ourselves, our house and our environment,” he
explains. “The interchange of information allows decisions to be made to improve our lives by simplifying tasks, automating functions and communicating with us.” onfirming otter’s statements, in August , Samsung (samsung.com/za) announced that IoT technologies have become the centre of the electronic giant’s strategic focus, with more than R17 billion to be invested in IoT research and development over the next four years. Paulo Ferreira, director of enterprise mobility at Samsung South Africa, says Samsung aims for all of its devices to be IoT-enabled by 2020. But IoT cannot succeed in a vacuum, he notes. Samsung is actively promoting cooperation that will result in smart ecosystems of intelligent devices. “With Samsung’s SmartThings platform, we are now able to support the convergence of a range of smart devices – from fridges to light bulbs – on an open platform to make the smart home a reality,” he says. “All of this will impact us dramatically in the years to come – and by years, I’m talking one or two,” continues Potter. “If your home is enabled to take advantage of this technology explosion, then you will have a major advantage over homeowners where the infrastructure has not been planned into the fabric of the home.”

Luxury_Apr_Tech.kw.indd 5
CASE STUDY MIRAMAR, BANTRY BAY, CAPE TOWN Briefed to create a transformable space that would simultaneously maximise the dimensions of a compact footprint and make the most of the ocean views, Tony Mariano, founder of interior design studio Mariano Rossouw (marianorossouw.com), pushed technology to the extreme in this Atlantic Seaboard apartment. The diminutive 110m2 open-plan living area incorporates a fully functional kitchen, living room, dining area and bar. By employing an ingenious system of bifolding doors designed by Ian Smith of Interjoin (interjoin.co.za), living spaces seamlessly appear and disappear on demand. “We only had two walls with which to work – one for the kitchen area and a longer wall to accommodate the entrance feature, dining room table, TV/entertainment display unit and bar area with integrated fridge,” says Tony. An exercise in extreme micro-design, the joinery running the length of the longer wall was clad in grey solar shield glass, which effectively acts as a two way mirror, reflecting the view and throwing light into the apartment by day. At night, it is sufficiently transparent to illuminate a series of backlit display niches behind it. In addition to creating the illusion of enhanced space, this
wall of mirror also houses a retractable six-seater dining table (which can be collapsed for use as a desk), as well as a backlit panel for the display of the owner’s favourite artwork and a pair of ottomans for use when additional seating is required. “The carcass of the system was built from light but strong birch ply. The doors have aluminium frames onto which the glass is laminated,” says Smith. A similar multifunctional concept was used in the kitchen, this time with 2mm rock cladding inspired by the boulders that front the apartment. For this reason, the 2.8m-wide space still manages to incorporate a fridge-freezer, dishwasher and oven as well as ample cabinetry. Strategic lighting was essential for space enhancement and hidden storage. For this, the clever interplay of reflected, indirect and mood lighting was employed by lighting designer oland hemelli of ovo Illumine (novoillumine.co.za). ombining the principles of chromotherapy with the latest colour-changing technologies, the intensity and hue of the individual lights can be adjusted according to the time of the day and the desired mood [above]. This creates the illusion of altered space while also evoking an emotional response from the user,” he says.

BELOW Spacious rooms, huge windows and exposed concrete are combined with a well-designed energy concept and intelligent home technology in the award-winning Bauhaus (bauhaus.info) Smart Home
CASE STUDY BAUHAUS SMART HOME, ZIRNDORF, GERMANY Designed by award-winning German architect Dagmar Pemsel (bp-arc.de), this striking Bauhaus-style home incorporates groundbreaking technology from Gira (gira.com), a global leader in intelligent building technology. At the heart of the system is a certified management system, which links the home’s many technology components. A powerful Gira HomeServer, meanwhile, functions as the “brain” of the system, merging and evaluating all data before sending corresponding commands to the machine control mechanisms (actuators). All the lights in the house can be activated from here, blinds can be raised or lowered and heating can be regulated. Several functions also run automatically in the background – the blinds, for instance, are raised when the Gira weather station detects strong wind. The system is intuitive and easily controlled from within the home or remotely using an iPad or iPhone. “The house is entirely future-proof,” says Gira system
integrator Klaus Geyer, who worked on the project. “It is especially practical that the system can be reprogrammed, adapted or retrofitted at any time without having to prise open the walls because the infrastructure (such as the cables) is already installed,” he says. In addition to isolated functions, entire scenes can be programmed into the push-button sensors in the rooms. For example, a reduced-light scene with lowered blinds can be set for cinema evenings, as can targeted lighting at the dining table with subtle background music. Door communication with video function provides security, while selected light fittings and loudspeakers are discretely integrated in the architecture as ceiling or wall installation variants. CASE STUDY SYNERGY TREE HOUSE, SCARBOROUGH, CAPE TOWN This luxury tree house is proof that high-tech can also be wholly organic. Situated amid the gnarled boughs and boulders of its coastal setting, it is the last word in automated enterprise. Bound on three sides by frameless glass walls (framelessglasspartners.co.za) that, at the touch of button, open up completely to stupendous sea views, the house can just as easily be put into full lockdown mode thanks to automated shutters (acscreens.co.za) with adjustable slats. The blinds throughout are remote controlled, as are the TVs that lift from discreet boxes at the foot of each bed (above). Also adjustable from the soft-touch access panel is a striking water feature, together with the pool pump and light (eaglelighting. co.za), and even the coffee machine. In the kitchen, cooking odours are eliminated thanks to an automated extractor fan that slides from the counter when activated. Manager India Rostad sums up the bipolar appeal: “While guests have the latest smart home gadgetry at their fingertips, it is so inconspicuously integrated into Synergy’s design that they feel immersed in nature.”

INTERVIEW
Lighting designer Thabisa Mjo talks Nando’s and curiosity TEXT AND PRODUCTION Julia Freemantle PHOTOGRAPH Karl Rogers
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR CAREER?
I initially studied production design at AFDA. After graduating, I worked in the T and film industry for a while. As much as I loved production design, I wanted to create spaces in the real world, spaces people can live and work in hence I’ve focused my business on retail and hospitality design, studying at Inscape Design School for the industry knowledge. I consciously design pieces that have a estern design aesthetic straight lines, materials such as copper and marble with an African influence. That’s the sweet spot, the place where the two worlds meet and create something really compelling. HOW DID YOU COME TO FIND YOURSELF IN THE WORK YOU DO?
I’ve received the most attention from my product design particularly lighting, which was totally unplanned. I wanted to design interiors for ando’s, so I was trying to get onto their radar. hen I created the Tutu . light, I’d literally never designed anything before it was a happy accident but through this, I’m now on the road I wanted to take my business down. WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
hen others recognise a part of themselves, a part of their cultural heritage, even a childhood memory, in one of my designs. I love that they are helping people view things with fresh eyes, seeing something familiar presented into designs that are clever and new. WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT TO DATE?
“THERE IS NO ONE RIGHT WAY OF DOING IT. KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR DESIGN COMPETITIONS, THOUGH” THABISA MJO

orking with ando’s and being included on the 100 Beautiful Things stand at 100% Design South Africa, going on to win Best Product Design and est merging reative. I didn’t even stay for the awards ceremony because I genuinely never ever thought I’d win. WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR NEWCOMERS IN THE INDUSTRY?
There is no one right way of doing it. Keep your eye out for design competitions, though it’s a good way to get a foot in the industry and achieve credibility. WHY DOES THIS CAREER SUIT YOU?
I’m quick to adapt and am self confident. It’s so important to believe in your own vision it takes others time before they’re on board, so you need to be able to encourage yourself much of the time. It’s also important to listen and you have to be curious curious and open to learning, curious to know how things work, curious about the world. mashtdesignstudio.co.za

RESIDENCY is the legal right to live, work, travel and study in a country, subject to certain conditions. Typically you wouldn’t give up citizenship in your own country.
CITIZENSHIP confers additional legal privileges, for example, the right to vote. Residency can be revoked; citizenship typically can’t be. Some countries allow dual citizenship; others do not.
