Teachers decry exclusion of deserving 4P’s learners

Three deserving learners for the 4P’s program were not enlisted from the 165 registered recipients for SY 2023-2024, which raised questions to some teacher advisers in Luz Banzon IS that hinder their privilege in availing of the government program for less fortunate and below-poverty families living in the nearby community.

One of the excluded learners is Sarah, a grade 3 learner who, according to the teacher adviser, is very worthy of being listed in the 4Ps, or Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), a flagship program of DSWD that aims to support below-poverty Pilipinos to sustain monetary assistance for learners officially enrolled in all schools from kindergarten to junior high school.

According to DSWD Jasaan Municipal Link of Barangay Luz Banzon, Mrs. Renelyn D. Abanes, RSW, they were very careful in including families to belong in the 4Ps but due to distance of residence, other families could not be reached and/or others were ignored because nobody was at home during the conduct of the census.

Mrs. Salvador, teacher adviser of Sarah worries the same possibility of this negligence which could somehow assist the needs of learners in providing school supplies, school uniforms, and other necessities they need, especially financial assistance.

“This amount is just a minimal count for us but for them, it is a huge thing and could even make ends meet. We are trying our best to help these learners to be enlisted hopefully next SY because they deserve it the most than other recipients,” said Mrs. Salvador.

These 168 4Ps recipients of Luz Banzon IS have been rescreened to eliminate non-deserving learners due to over-age and completers in school. Barangay Luz Banzon personnel also extend their support in the transparent implementation of this government program to the finest.

Swearing of studes alarms teachers

Adisappointing confrontation of the school administration against learners was seriously demanding restrictions on its influence on other learners who were always caught swearing and cursing “pamalikas“ inside the school premises was opened to parents during the 3rd Parents’ Teachers Conference on February 17, 2024.

According to a statement from raisingchildren.net. au., children swearing are usually expressing negative feelings taken from their peers or from their homes. They swear because it gets a strong reaction from their parents or because they fit in socially with the group.

According to Robert J. Asis, school principal, he asked parents to be sensitive to their children, especially to their school behaviors. He directs all the teacher advisers to supervise and make strong sense if there are learners caught swearing or cursing again, especially in the school field where anybody can hear these inappropriate words, and orders them to be reported in his office and invite parents or guardians of learners to talk about the latter issue.

“We are not teaching you to swear or curse here in school, but we always hear you say those words. This is a school where we transform you into a holistic being with a dignified and wholesome personality, but we see it the wrong way,“ Asis expressed.

“We are not tolerating that kind of attitude here in school; if you keep saying those things, we will be forced to enjoin sanction on those who will be caught cursing,“ he added.

SELG President Adrianna Merriales, a Grade 6 learner, with the help of the SELG Adviser, initiated a campaign against swearing and cursing in the school to mitigate immoral insights and offending other learners.

In an interview, Merriales gave insights about the issue, which is very sensitive because she incorporated the possible role of the parents at home and said that this issue should be taken care first at home.

Interrogations were conducted to identified Grade 4, 5 and 6 lerners of LBIS who were spotted frequently having a puppy love date with their pairs and sharing meals during lunch time for a series of times in a week already.

According to reports, their classmates said that these pairs were affirmatively in their ON A RELATIONSHIP stage for a long time already without revealing to their class advisers.

“We really discourage these acts to these immature learners more so of doing public display of affection which is not yet ideal for their ages”, said Mr. Asis, the principal.

The school ordered class advisers to strictly monitor their learners not to engage yet to this kind of intimate relationship to avoid severe outcomes since they have more meeting places in school, express the principal. “Years before, I have no cases like this but after the establishment of Junior High School, it gradually dawns on them that having an affair is acceptable, as evidenced by their observations of other junior high school students. To regulate this, I suggest we should also limit this kind of affection display to Junior High School,” said Mrs. Mag-away, elementary adviser.

During the 3rd SPTA Assembly conducted on March 16, 2024, the school principal highlighted the sensitive issue to the parent attendees to closely monitor the activities of their children in school and openly discuss the said matter at home to widen their understanding about this serious matter.

These sentiments and hearsay about the possible negative impact on this construction, left questions and controversies on some parents in the community especially from the School PTA.

According to SPTA President, Mrs. Bolipata, the rise of this mall is a manifestation of the progress and development of our barangay but we should not compromise the academic development of our learners which is very vulnerable to them..

“It will surely attract enrollment and tourism, yes but, our worry is the possible distraction on their academic progress. We should implement a system to address the possible issue or strengthen school policy to recalibrate the school’s integrity” she added.

More than 250 learners from Grades 7 and 8 happily expressed their sentiments during the groundbreaking ceremony for a 4-story classroom building worth 10 million funds from Provincial SEF to rise as answers for the 6 years agony of learners staying in the makeshift classrooms of Luz Banzon IS, Jasaan.

The province of Misamis Oriental is ready to showcase a spectacular initiative—a two-story, fourclassroom school facility at Luz Banzon Integrated School (LBIS)—in response to the critical demand for suitable learning spaces amid a boom in student population. The Misamis Oriental School Board Special Education Fund (SEF)-funded project, with a budget of PHP 10,080,220.23, began building on October 12, 2023, and is expected to be completed in May 2024. USB Builders has been appointed as the project’s general contractor.

The completion of this long-awaited facility is a critical step toward closing the province’s educational infrastructure gap. The new structure is intended to meet the expanding educational needs of students, who have long faced a lack of classrooms due to the annual increase in enrollment, notably during the current academic year.

“This initiative is a game-changer for our school. With the new classrooms, we can better accommodate our students and provide them with a conducive learning environment that promotes growth and development,” said Mr. Asis, the principal.

Echoing Mr. Gomez’s sentiments, the provincial engineer, Mr. Carlos Dela Cruz, emphasized the significance of the project, saying, “The construction of these classrooms aligns with our commitment to prioritize education. These facilities will not only address the current shortfall but also create a sustainable learning space for generations to come.”

The new two-story, four-classroom structure is expected to relieve pressure on current facilities and improve the educational landscape in Misamis Oriental. It symbolizes the province’s dedication to creating a learning environment and providing students with the resources they need to succeed.

According to standard teacher-learner ratio of SDO Misamis Oriental, 4 classrooms are needed to occupy the Grade 7 learners of the school which are now merge into two congested classes. The Provincial SEF allote another 10 classrooms - 2 story building which can decongest other classes in the primary level, according to the Provincial Office.

Over the years, millennials have continuously faded out, leaving these Gen Z people with their unique ways and means of communication and socialization schemes with their peers but, what matters now is their behaviors in school, which are poorly monitored by their parents, especially in their language manners.

Gen Z people are born and grew up with the prime dominance of the internet and social media, gaining unique behaviors that may seem rude to older generations but are inclusive and other ways of being respectful. Their language may sound different and reinvented, but they are truly made to attract attention and have fun. In school, they are bold in saying words older generations are not allowed to say.

According to paminy.com, Gen Z etiquette is more elaborate and inclusive than millennials. Gen Z etiquette is more open-minded and tolerant of different perspectives and experiences than older generations.

In school, language and etiquette are the baselines of attitude. But it is always observed that their language and manners seem so different. Some of them are bold in swearing, cursing, and making profanity in some conversations with their peers, which results in arguments and quarrels among them. Most cases reported in classrooms are attitudes that are barely controlled by some teacher advisers and lead to parent consultations and reports. Surveys confirmed that these language manners originated from social media, where generations were focused and lived. Some imitate actions, dances, languages, songs, and even images that they think are appropriate for them, but not all of them. Gen Z always thinks they fit in, but not all the time.

It is also a sign of development for the community, which attracts employment, tourism, and economic growth. Is this worth compromising the education of the learners?

The SR Mall offers diverse leisure activities, potential part-time jobs, and access to establishments meeting academic and recreational needs. Venturing into global franchise opportunities at SMX Mall of Asia demonstrates an aspiration to inject a global ambiance into the local scene.

However, students, including myself, worry about the temptation to spend too much time at the mall during school hours or after classes, risking a decline in academic focus and involvement in schoolrelated activities. Proximity to recreational facilities, entertainment options, and retail

establishments could tempt students to skip lectures or neglect their schoolwork. Recognizing potential downsides of a nearby mall, I believe proper guidance and balance can mitigate the negative impact. Students need to prioritize studies and manage time effectively, with school management and instructors playing a crucial role in promoting awareness. By embracing Benjamin Franklin’s advice, students should anticipate challenges and actively seek solutions, thereby ensuring academic excellence while also enjoying the convenience of having a nearby mall.

Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) is the lifeblood of all public institutions here in the Philippines to support the learning programs and help maintain a safe and healthy environment in schools, as first released in implementing guidelines as stipulated in DepEd Order No. 13, 2016.

The significant increase in water and electricity utility expenditures has raised concerns about the educational landscape at Luz Banzon Integrated School. The startling 35%, or PHP 4,500.00, increase in monthly expenses, which has pushed bills from PHP 9,000.00 to a frightening PHP 13,500.00, poses an alarming situation for the institution and its stakeholders.

This sharp increase in electricity prices directly threatens the Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) budget, which is critical to meeting the diversified demands of students, educators, and school infrastructure. Such enormous costs imperil the basic resources required for a suitable learning environment.

The expensive expenditures stem from the school’s outdated infrastructure, which requires maintenance. Leaking water pipes from the main sources and poor electrical cabling worsen consumption, resulting in an unsustainable increase in utility prices.

The burden of this financial strain falls heavily on the shoulders of Luz Banzon Integrated School. The restricted MOOE budget jeopardizes critical aspects of education, limiting access to instructional materials, teacher training, and essential operational needs. As a result, educational quality declines, which has a direct impact on our chances as learners within these walls.

Immediate action is required to prevent this coming calamity. Urgent repairs and rebuilding of leaking water lines and defective electrical connections are critical measures for reducing growing utility bills. Government agencies, local governments, and concerned stakeholders must band together to provide resources and skills to address these infrastructure deficiencies.

The situation necessitates a coordinated effort to protect the integrity of education. Advocating for additional financing and timely action on infrastructure maintenance is critical. Our children’s education should not be hampered by preventable problems caused by a lack of resources.

The way I see it, as a community, we must come together and advocate for immediate action. The future of our students, as well as the integrity of education, is at stake. All parties involved must prioritize the solutions to these infrastructure challenges to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning and growth at Luz Banzon Integrated School.

MADE-UP not CATCH-UP

One primary catalyst for the increasing Friday absences of Luz Banzon Integrated learners is the unintended consequence of the catch-up reading program. While the initiative aims to address literacy challenges among learners, it has inadvertently become a source of anxiety and avoidance for some students. The fear of falling behind or the stigma associated with participating in the program prompts students to opt for absenteeism on Fridays, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the school.

The effectiveness of the catch-up reading program, in this context, becomes a subject of scrutiny. Does the program genuinely cater to the needs of struggling readers, offering them a meaningful opportunity to catch up on their skills? Or is it a token gesture, a checkbox to appease educational standards without delivering tangible results? Luz Banzon Integrated School must critically assess the impact of the program on student literacy levels and adjust its strategies accordingly.

In an interview of ACT Chairperson Quetua in Philippine Star, she stressed that aside from teachers additional load iand expenses in catch-up friday preparations, learners tend to leave classes due to lack of engagements of teachers which is because they lack reading materials for these learners. It is very sad to know that our teachers are cooking their own oil just for this compliance.

In my opinion, a nuanced approach is required to address the “Catch Up or Made Up?” dilemma. It is essential to acknowledge the genuine literacy challenges faced by some students while simultaneously dispelling the notion that participation in the catch-up reading program is a mark of inadequacy.

Moreover, the school administration should actively involve students in shaping the narrative around the catch-up reading program. By incorporating their feedback, understanding their concerns, and adapting the program based on their needs, the school can move beyond a potentially fabricated narrative and cultivate a culture of genuine improvement and learning.

“Catch Up or Made Up?” dilemma at Luz Banzon Integrated School necessitates a thoughtful and multifaceted response. By addressing the root causes of Friday absences, dispelling stigmas associated with the catch-up reading program, and actively involving students in the solution, the school can move toward creating a more supportive educational environment. It is through a genuine commitment to literacy and learning that Luz Banzon Integrated School can ensure its students are not just catching up but forging ahead on their educational journeys.

Regulation of using visitor’s ID for outsiders

It is very evident that the administration is pushing into action about the wearing of Identification Cards in school especially to those learners officially enrolled this SY.

Effectively, the rule was obeyed and followed by the learners and teachers as well. This is to answer the recent incident regarding the commotion brought by the outsider resulting to gain injuries of the learner in school. The action was alarming considering the gate personnel has no idea who is coming in and getting out every now and then.

But, one thing was distracting the attention of some parents when their children were not permitted to get inside due to not wearing of their IDs. This issue must resolve with a gentle touch of reprimands because there are some things we cannot control like they miss to wear their IDs and it will just compromise the safety of the learners when not admitted inside the school. Hope to hear our sentiments. Thank you for hearing our voice.

he ongoing argument over the “No School Uniform” policy, enacted by the conflict and discussion at Luz Banzon Integrated School. While the instruction events have highlighted the possible downsides of this practice.

The lack of a recognizable uniform has caused confusion and misidentifications, as evidenced by the incidents in November 2023. It underlines the necessity to review the policy to achieve a balance between cost considerations and ensuring a safe and structured educational environment.

With proper wearing of school uniforms, it emphasized a more ideal school practice that even others cannot afford to buy. That is why the school always reminds even the 4Ps recipients to reserve their share of the 4Ps assistance, which should be school supplies, school uniforms, and other minimal school fees.

Given these instances, the significance of a clear dress code for parents, instructors, visitors, and students is obvious upon entering the school grounds. Establishing an appropriate dress code promotes not only a sense of identity and pride but also a safe school atmosphere. It facilitates identification, reduces external disruptions, and promotes a professional environment.

There are several advantages that we can attain by promoting an appropriate and proper dress code in school. The top on the list is that it can promote a learning environment that creates a focused and respectful atmosphere in the classroom. And also, the most important thing is that it fosters safety and security among learners, which prohibits clothing offensive and violent imagery of learners, creating much dignity for learners.

Considering today’s mindset of Gen Z people, overdressing or underdressing might be subject to bullying or sensitive actions. Striking a good balance between individual expression and community identity through a well-defined dress code is critical for creating a positive and

Teachers, school administration, or students themselves? Teachers may struggle to prioritize the handbook amid their many responsibilities. Administrators, as culture influencers, should prioritize its importance and integrate it into school ethics. Students also bear responsibility, needing to recognize the handbook’s importance for a conducive learning environment.

Ultimately, all stakeholders share the responsibility to uphold the handbook’s standards, creating a culture where it guides the educational journey effectively. It is not solely the duty of teachers and school admin to remind and push the school rules in every hand of learners but also the School PTA and the Barangay Officials which are the alternate ego of the school.

As we all say, it takes a village to educate a child. Thus, educating is not merely giving academic lessons to children but also a life lesson in keeping them responsible and on the ground in school and the outside community.

IRising business, it’s Bulad-ish!

Starting a business is an obscure investment. It can multiply and prosper, or it can go the opposite way. Your determination and hard work have proven to be the most effective ingredients for a business to succeed.

In Luz Bazon, Jasaan, a small group of business owners tested their luck by investing in bulad, or dried fish—a common and traditional Filipino side dish that usually comes with fried eggs and sliced tomatoes; others do it with almost all other dishes on the plate, and it tastes like heaven when perfectly fried.

In 2023, only 5 vendors began selling “Bulad” along the highway near the school, which pushed them to avoid wasting excess fish obtained that season. The only way to preserve these fish is to dry them, and because they are placed beside the highway, they believe they will be able to sell them to passersby.

Kevin, a Luz Banzon IS alumni, is one of these vendors; it was a quiet place back then, so he had to urge his brother to sell it to teachers and parents in school just to make ends meet.

In the beginning, Kevin recalls the long hours he spent perfecting his recipes and experimenting with various flavors to create a unique identity for his dried fish products. His commitment to quality and customer satisfaction became the cornerstone of his business. Soon, word spread like wildfire, and the demand for Kevin’s dried fish skyrocketed.

As the business grew, Kevin expanded his operation, moving from a modest street-side stand to a charming little shop adorned with colorful banners and inviting signage. The once solo venture now employed a small team of dedicated individuals, creating job opportunities for locals and contributing to the economic growth of the community.

Today, Kevin’s dried fish business stands as a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. When a series of heat waves hit our country, most people became concerned and even passed out owing to the intense heat radiating from their surroundings. Some anticipate rising utility bills, water shortages, and even price increases in some commodities.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOA), the El Nino phenomenon will cause severe heat from August 2023 to the first quarter of 2024. These intense heat waves led our rivers and lakes to dry up, affecting the lives of individuals who rely on these types of environments.

In Luz Banzon, Jasaan, along the road beside the school, we can see a growing dried fish trade. These stores are largely run by parents of students at Luz Banzon Integrated School.

The amount of fish is unquestionable because this hamlet is located next to the shore, and fishing is the primary source of income. People from othe town or even passersby loved to stop to purchase some of their one-ofa-kind dried fishes which has varieties to choose from the smallest fish to the largest ones. One of those stores are owned by Mrs. Anastsya Natividad.

Mrs. Natividad, sells a variety of dried fishes, the most popular of which is the “burot,” a little flat-bodied fish that is often grey in color. Their costs vary not according to size, but according to rarity. They range from Ph250.00 to Ph550.00 per kilo, and the majority of their high-priced dried fish are wrapped to guard against insects and pests.

Their typical weekly income varies by day; for example, Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest selling days, with weekly earnings of Ph8,000.00Ph11,000.00 if it is not rainy season.

The LGU Jasaan appears to have encouraged the growing economy of dried fish in Luz Banzon by providing them with a comfortable market place complete with comfort rooms and shades. Time is the most precious commodity a human can ever have. We can buy everything, but we can never buy time. During the supremacy of the COVID-19 pandemic, people were tested by their faith, loyalty, and dedication to one another based on their responses, reactions, and emotions.

But some young aspirant scientists defy the challenge they experience due to the sentimental arrival of a dying grandmother who wasn’t given enough comfort from medicine. These learners realized the time spent could not be rewinded.

According to the National Library of Medicine, USA, each year, in the United States alone, 7,000 to 9,000 people die due to a medication error. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of other patients experience, but often do not report, an adverse reaction or other complications related to a medication. This data answers the call for the same experience that occurred to one of the learners at Luz Banzon IS.

Three young innovators, Jude D’Niel Arriola, Anjela Heartescolano, and Gillian Grace G. Reyes, revealed the AMEDIS Junkbot at the District Science Fair 2024 where it earned 2nd place, this robotic solution is a response to pandemic challenges, showcasing innovation and creativity.

Aseries of unprecedented passouts among learners were recorded a month after the opening of classes in August 2023. The alarming heat index hikes in the months of September to October of 2023 brought unhealthy reactions to some learners in school due to congestion inside the classroom as well as poorly ventilated areas.

The growing horizon of games seems to be endlessly expanding outside everybody’s reach. E-games, or electronic games, are now dominantly preferred by mostly millennials, as the growing pedestal of technology is also unreachable.

According to an update on Reddit, Mobile Legends territories seem to include Russia, the Middle East, India, the majority of Southeast Asia, a small part of Latin America, and, surprisingly, Australia and Japan. These surges of interest should be governed with proper usage or monitored by the parents or guardians to minimize these exposures.

In some public schools, these e-games are known to be played by learners in their homes and even in school during class breaks, but what we see is that most traditional games are gradually being negligible by this generation. What is next? Perhaps it will go into history.

Playing with a stationary body might have bad effects on your health, both physically and mentally. Unlike traditional games, bodies are mostly being used as part of the game to execute the rules and mechanics.

The next step will be crucial considering the possible negative impact on their health as they indulge themselves in these gadgets over time. As educators, we should not consider these e-sports to be included in school.

It negates the vision and mission of our department, which is partly giving these learners an overview of how we take care of our bodies to become healthy and productive. Ylaya shines bright in Provincial Meet ‘24

In a triumphant comeback, Dave Andrew YLaya, a grade 10 learner from Luz Banzon Integrated School, made waves at the Provincial Swimming Meet 2024 held at Balingasag Central District’s HardRock Resort from January 23–26, 2024. Having embarked on his swimming journey in grade 4 at LBIS, Dave participated in the regional competition for three consecutive years during his elementary days before briefly shifting to volleyball in grades 7 and 8.

With high hopes for his final year at LBIS, Dave Andrew YLaya returned to the pool, aiming to make a splash in the provincial meet. Although the dream of advancing to the Regional Meet 2024 eluded him, YLaya’s unwavering determination and perseverance proved to be a source of inspiration for his school and the entire district of Jasaan South Unit 2.

During the provincial meet, YLaya showcased his exceptional skills, securing a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle relay, a silver medal in the 200-meter medley relay, and a bronze medal in the 100-meter breaststroke.

During the Provincial Meet 2024, the boys and girls from LBIS Elementary plunged into the pool in a stunning display of technique and genuine emotion, sending ripples of happiness and pain. Marc John Gemelga, a Grade 6 star, showed off his abilities by finishing eighth in the tough backstroke division. Their formidable stunts made them gain the crowd’s cheer and yells during the entire swimming tilts in the recently concluded Provincial Meet 2024 held at Balingasag, Misamis Oriental.

Amidst challenges faced during the event, like losing focus due to imminent fever, Vanessa still managed to pursue the competition with ease and confidence. As the youngest of all the athletes, she was graced with care and comfort by all other athletes during the whole swimming event in Palarong Panlalawigan in Sapong, Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental.

Echoes of triumph reverberated as Jester Badelic and Michael Gemelga, both swimmers from Luz Banzon Integrated School UNIT 2, made waves in the recently concluded Provincial Meet 2024., held at Balingasag Central District, HardRock Resort, last January 23–26, 2024.

Jester Badelic and Michael Gemelga embarked on their swimming journey during their formative years at Luz Banzon Integrated School. From the tranquil waters of elementary competitions to the challenging waves of the provincial meet, both swimmers have been unwavering in their commitment bringing glory to their school and District Unit 2.

The driving force behind their success is Coach Maam Janice A. Jumuad, a mentor who instilled not only the techniques of swimming but also the values of determination and discipline. Under her guidance, Jester and Michael flourished from promising talents to formidable contenders, ready to face any challenge the pool presented.

Held at Balingasag Central District on January 23–24, the Provincial Meet 2024 became the stage for Jester and Michael’s aquatic prowess. Vanessa showcased her exceptional talent and determination, emerging as the youngest swimmer among her peers, during the Unit Meet 2023 held at Lagonglong District’s Sapong Spring. Her unwavering passion for swimming led her to fearlessly compete in the freestyle 400-meter and 200-meter dashes, typically events for more seasoned athletes. Vanessa’s impressive performance highlighted how skill and dedication can surpass age boundaries in sports.

What sets Vanessa apart is not just her participation but her incredible performance, particularly in the grueling 400-meter and 200-meter races, where her resilience and endurance were on full display.
