Di r e ctor ’s Not e Dear Friends – As spring approaches, we look forward to unveiling the many recent improvements at Longue Vue! Respected art book publisher Rizzoli has announced it will produce a book on Longue Vue House and Gardens. Acclaimed New Orleans photographer Tina Freeman has been selected to photograph the house and gardens and the photography phase of the project is slated for the last week of March and the first week of April. As a result, visitors to Longue Vue will find the grounds and interiors awash in activity – repairing, painting, polishing, cleaning – all in an effort to make Longue Vue “picture perfect” for this major book release in the fall of 2015. One very noticeable change is the relocation of The Shop at Longue Vue to its original location selected by Mrs. Stern. The now spacious shop has returned to the Coach House and new inventory is arriving daily. Restoration work is almost complete in the Whim House, the Playhouse and The Shop at Longue Vue’s former location in the Gate House. The Whim House’s original furnishings – including the swinging bed – have been retrieved from the Longue Vue attic and are being re-installed so visitors can enjoy the Whim House as it was when first built. Spaces offered for facility rental – the large Playhouse and the more intimate Gate House – have been attractively refurbished and await the occasion of your next meeting or event. Spring is a wonderful time to visit Longue Vue and we look forward to welcoming you soon!

The couple initially resided in New Orleans before moving to Colorado, where they pursued the pleasure of skiing and music. In the 1970s Polly and Edgar developed Deer Valley Resort in Utah; in 1986 they made a final move to San Juan Island where Polly continued her interests in landscape, interior and restaurant design. She is survived by her four children, Sandra Stern McIver, Eric, Monte and Lessing Stern, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Avant-Garden: Louisiana Iris Takes the Spotlight at Longue Vue Spring is a wonderful time for visits to Longue Vue House and Gardens. There’s no doubt that when it comes to choosing the star of Longue Vue’s blossoming spring season , the Louisiana Iris takes the spotlight. The collection contains over 3,500 plants which includes the five native iris and hundreds of natural and man-made hybrids that erupt into a rainbow of colors each spring. The physical layout of Longue Vue’s Iris Walk provides an extraordinary narrative of the natural history and cultivated development of the iris. Designed in 1939 by Ellen Biddle Shipman, the winding walk is flanked by 265 foot-long troughs that span the length of the garden and provide a perfect home for the iris plants. When the tall irises bloom, the design has been known to convey the sensation of traveling through a swamp in a pirogue. Edith Stern retained the services of renowned naturalist and iris hybridizer Caroline Dorman in 1947 to advise and oversee the planting of the Wild Garden. Mrs. Stern’s eye for collecting, Shipman’s skill for garden design and Dorman’s extensive knowledge of Louisiana natives make the iris collection at Longue Vue more than simply an element of the garden, but truly a work of unrivaled art.

- Plan your visit Longue Vue’s myriad of spring plants growing throughout the eight-acre estate, make a perfect background for nature and bridal photography, as well as garden gatherings. From March to May, keep an eye out for these beauties in bloom:

Guests are invited to join Honorary Chairs Olivia Manning and Patricia Brinson and event co-chairs Shaun Duncan and Barkley Rafferty in support of the legacy of Edith and Edgar Stern. “The value of Longue Vue in the community is not only based on its National Historic Landmark designation but importantly lies in the continuation of the Stern’s commitment to education, equality and environmental stewardship,” said Duncan. “As a center of active programming and varied exhibits, the home and gardens are utilized creatively and constantly by students, youngsters and tourists,” added co-chair Rafferty. The “night in the gardens of Spain” takes place in the lush Carrollton Avenue garden of Stephanie and Joseph Bruno, with famed Galatoire’s fare created by Chef Michael Sichel, fine wines and signature cocktails with a Spanish flair. Cultivating Communities: Fulfilling Philanthropy One Plant at a Time Partnering with the Waldo Burton Memorial School, Longue Vue’s Cultivating Communities program teaches students how to grow, produce and sell their products to raise money for a nonprofit of their choice. At the beginning of this school year, students worked with Longue Vue Gardener Megan Roniger and Educator Jen Cohn to produce a bountiful crop of vegetables and herbs. Then, Chef Bradley McGehee of Ye Olde College Inn taught students how to turn their crops into delicious hummus and pesto, which in turn were sold at the Crescent City Farmers Market and Hollygrove Market and Farm. This semester, the students have transitioned into the philanthropic phase of the program, where revenues raised are donated to a nonprofit of their choice. Students have taken a field trip to the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and are preparing for trips to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, and YAYA: Young Aspirations, Young Artists.

2013-2014 Cultivating COmmunities.

Which nonprofit will the boys choose to donate proceeds to this year? Stay tuned for the final decision!
