Sleeping Porch at Longue Vue

Di r e ctor ’s Not e Dear Friends – We were pleased to see that Longue Vue was chosen to grace the cover of Bonnie Warren’s new book, New Orleans Homes at Christmas, because although the house is open to the public for all seasons of the year, no time is more perfect than now, when Longue Vue is decorated for the holiday season. Eight pages of luscious photographs by Cheryl Gerber illustrate the care and creativity used in decorating the house. Longue Vue’s unique exterior is dressed for the holiday season in fresh greenery tied with red bows draped around the doors on both the first and second floors as well as the balconies. Why not begin a family tradition of dropping by Longue Vue this holiday season to enjoy the house, gardens and even the Shop at Longue Vue where that perfect holiday gift awaits your selection! As the year closes, we look back with satisfaction on the completion of many, many projects all geared to put the sparkle back into Longue Vue House and Gardens. Floors have been stripped and refinished, marble and brass polished, light fixtures repaired and cleaned, and a fresh coat of paint both indoors and out all contribute to the “renewal” of Longue Vue. Restoration of the fabulous Whim House is nearing completion and we will soon be moving to the ground floor of the house to bring the Wine Tasting Room and Wine Cellar back to their original state. And not to be overlooked, Longue Vue’s center of activity – the Lucy C. Roussel Discovery Garden – is due for a “renewal” of its own in the coming months. One thing is certain – Longue Vue will be more vibrant than ever in 2015! I hope you will be a part of this Longue Vue renewal by taking a moment to make an end-of-year or contributing member gift which will ensure the success of our work.

Cultivating Communities 2014-2015

SUPPORT CULTIVATING COMMUNITIES IN THE NEW YEAR Since August, Cultivating Communities students from the Waldo Burton Memorial School for Boys have worked with Longue Vue’s education and garden staff to sow seeds, propagate herbs and plant a variety of greens in the Walled Garden and Discovery Garden. The bountiful harvest produced will be available for sale on January 6 at Crescent City Farmers Market. The public can support Cultivating Communities by purchasing their fresh vegetables grown at Longue Vue, as well as pesto and hummus created under the guidance of Ye Olde College Inn’s Executive Chef, Bradley McGehee. The students will donate the money raised at each market day to a nonprofit of their choice at the end of the school year. Cultivating Communities is a partnership between Longue Vue House and Gardens and The Waldo Burton Memorial School for Boys. This program is generously supported by The Herb Society of America New Orleans Unit, and Jack and Peggy Laborde. Find out more by contacting Jen Cohn at 504.293.4721.

Scene from Grosse fatigue at Longue Vue

CAMILLE HENROT’S GROSSE FATIGUE AWAKENS AT LONGUE VUE On October 25, New Orleans unveiled the Prospect.3: Notes for Now biennial exhibition. Visitors from around the world explored several exhibitions throughout the city, including works by three phenomenal artists at Longue Vue. Hailing from France, filmmaker Camille Henrot’s work is a 13-minute video telling the story of the universe’s creation. Through the use of spoken-word poetry and an eclectic mix of imagery from around the world, Grosse Fatigue (Dead Tired) integrates scientific theory with various stories of Creation. Completed as part of the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship Program in 2013, visitors now have an opportunity to view Henrot’s work in the main gallery at Longue Vue. Henrot shares the Prospect.3 stage at Longue Vue with Mexican artist José Antonio Vega Macotela and Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Works will be on display through January 25. For more information about art exhibitions at Longue Vue, including Prospect.3, contact Lenora Costa at 504.293.4712.

Mario Villa’s Holiday Jewelry Exhibition Sparkles at Longue Vue For several years, Longue Vue has hosted the creations of designer Mario Villa as part of an annual fundraising exhibition and holiday shopping extravaganza. Villa grew up in Nicaragua surrounded by the art collection of his parents. His earliest artistic endeavors included painting and welding scraps of metal into sculptural forms. Educated in Europe and the United States, Villa earned degrees in anthropology from the University of New Orleans and in architecture from Tulane University. After his family was exiled from Nicaragua amidst the Sandinista Revolution, Villa made New Orleans his permanent home. He opened his first gallery in a small converted garage space in the French Quarter and a larger, second gallery two years later. On November 20, Art Jewels opened in Longue Vue’s Whim House. Several of Villa’s jewelry designs are on display and available for purchase through the end of the year, with a portion of proceeds benefitting education programs and art exhibits at Longue Vue. Learn more about this fundraising exhibit by contacting Jen Gick at 504.293.4723.
