Di r e ctor ’s Not e Dear Friends – Reviewing this issue of eVue you are about to enjoy, it’s hard to believe that spring has come and gone and summer is upon us. This spring saw the beginning stages of Longue Vue’s “renewal” with scores of painters, carpenters, and electricians returning the sparkle to this magnificent place. And while all of that was going on, plans were laid for new and recurring programs at Longue Vue. The Lucy C. Roussel Discovery Garden is due for its share of sparkle and polish as we prepare to welcome hundreds of younger guests for summer camp (all sold out for 2014), Kinder Garden and many of the popular Longue Vue birthday parties. By Saturday, July 26, the heat of the summer will be upon us and we think that’s a perfect time for the annual Longue Vue Ice Cream Social. Along with the ice cream, we’ve asked the Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO) to drop by with a few temporary residents looking for a permanent home. A quick reminder that the Shop at Longue Vue has also been renewed, is back in its original location by the Playhouse, and offers an exquisite array of gifts for home, family and friends. AND...when looking for a venue for a meeting or special event, please consider the attractive spaces located throughout the grounds of Longue Vue, including the Playhouse, Gate House or one of our many garden spaces. As you have the opportunity this summer to entertain family and friends, bring them to see Longue Vue House and Gardens, one of the great treasures of New Orleans. Finally, I direct your attention to the list of generous donors to Longue Vue found on the closing pages of this eVue. Many thanks to each of them for their commitment to Longue Vue and for the gifts of their time, their talents and their treasures.

On Wednesday, June 4, guests can join Artist Margaret Hull and Longue Vue Curator Lenora Costa for a summer talk and tour, as part of the Intended Legacies exhibition. Unveiled on May 15, Intended Legacies is the result of Hull’s intimate exploration of the furnishings, textiles, and contemporary art at Longue Vue and offers perspective on the Sterns’ mission to support art and artists. Margaret Hull is an artist working primarily in the fiber realm including embroidery, weaving, and assemblage. She grew up in the historic district of Church Hill in Richmond and graduated with a BFA in Fiber from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore in 2008. At MICA, she was involved in Community Arts Partnerships and received a France Merrick Fellowship to pursue an embroidery project with homeless women and children. She has continued community outreach work by teaching art and literacy in New Orleans. Guests are welcome to bring their lunch; Longue Vue will provide drinks. The talk and tour is free for members or with general admission and lasts from noon to 1:30 p.m. More information can be found at www.longuevue.com or by contacting Lenora Costa at 504.293.4712.

Keller FA mily F o u n d at i on Providing Free Kinder Garden in the Community

Although facilitated by a Longue Vue Educator, the child and accompanying adult are the true directors of the experience, selecting activities that are most appealing to their interests. The program curriculum was originally developed with the assistance of the Childcare Center at Delgado Community College. Throughout the seasons, themes vary and include Summer Fun in the Garden, Back to School, Where the Green Grass Grows and Creep, Crawl, and Fly. Now entering its 11th year, Longue Vue is proud to have received this $5,000 grant from the Keller Family Foundation to expand Kinder Garden. This money will be used to host ten free Saturday sessions over a four month period at Longue Vue, four free sessions at Hollygrove Market and Farm and to purchase new program supplies. For more information about Kinder Garden, contact Jen Cohn at jcohn@longuevue.com or 504.293.4721. Visit Longue Vue’s calendar of events at www.longuevue.com to view dates for the free sessions.

Longue Vue’s Discovery Garden

In fall 2013, the Keller Family Foundation announced its intent to provide additional funding to maintain and expand Longue Vue’s successful Kinder Garden program. Conducted in Longue Vue’s Lucy C. Roussel Discovery Garden, Kinder Garden is an outdoor educational program for children 18 months to 3 years old and their caregiver. Since its inception in 2003, over 6,000 adults and children have participated in Kinder Garden, introducing them to early pre-reading concepts, environmental science, math, art and movement.
