Danylo Halytskyi International Airport ‘‘Lviv’’ is the largest airport in Western Ukraine by passenger count and number of destinations. It is located in the southwestern part of the city only 7 km from the city center. As of 2014, Danylo Halytskyi International Airport’s destination network includes of about 30 international and domestic routes.

The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (1661) is one of the oldest universities in Central Europe and was the first university in Ukraine. Academic Venues Academic venues can offer not only their conference halls, which are located less than 3 km from the city center, but also expertise in their respective scientific fields. The buildings of Lviv’s main universities are grand and magnificent. The oldest university in Ukraine the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv opened its doors in 1661. Lviv Polytechnic National University (1844) is the oldest technological university in Eastern Europe. Things to See & Do Lviv is a unique combination of Western and Eastern cultures and is an extremely attractive tourist area of Ukraine. Lviv is a hidden gem of Europe, which is slowly being discovered by the world. History and architecture Lviv was founded by King Danylo Halytskyi in the 13th century and was named after his son Lev. Over the past 100 years Lviv has been under the rule of 7 countries — Austro-Hungary, Russia, West Ukrainian People’s Republic, Poland, Germany, Soviet Union and independent Ukraine. In 1998 Lviv’s historical center (120 ha) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. In Lviv there are more than 2 500 architectural monuments and 5 ancient castles around the city.

Spirituality and faith For centuries Lviv has been an important spiritual center for various religions. Lviv is now famous for the beauty of its cathedrals and variety of their styles. In Lviv, there are 20 denominations worshipping in 120 different churches, the oldest of which is the Church of St. Nicholas that dates back to 1292. Also, in the city there are more than 20 miraculous icons. In June 2001 Pope John Paul II served the Byzantine rite Liturgy in Lviv for 1 500 000 people.

Arts and creativity The range of artistic expression in Lviv is impressive. People from all over Ukraine flock to Lviv to learn the latest in cultural trends and to meet with stars from all over the world. The city inspires young and creative artists to demonstrate their talents during festivals, in galleries and exhibitions. City of Lions has more than 60 museums built in the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles, it is considered to be the largest open-air museum in Ukraine. 16


Festivals and traditions Lviv has been the cultural capital of Ukraine since 2009. It is in Lviv where the traditional celebrations of holidays are receiving the new format of various themed festivals. There are more than 100 festivals and city celebrations per year. About 100 000—200 000 tourists and city guests visit are visiting each of the festivals. The most popular are the classical music and jazz, coffee and chocolate, and the street arts festivals. Eight festivals in Lviv are listed in the top-100 best festivals in Ukraine.

Coffee and chocolate Lviv merchant Yuriy-Franz Kulchytskyi opened in 1683 in Vienna one of the first coffee shops in Europe. Now, each autumn Lviv City Coffeefest gathers all coffee lovers. There are approximately 1 500 restaurants, cafes and confectionaries in the city to sample Lviv’s finest coffee and chocolate all year round. Coffee and chocolate are famous souvenirs from Lviv and can be a great gift for those with a sweet tooth.

Beer and savories

Beer was first brewed in Lviv during the 15th century. Since then the beer culture has become a part of the culture of the city. It was so good that shortly it became popular not only in Ukraine, but also in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and later in the Soviet Union. There is a beer museum that invites all to learn the history of brewing, not only in Ukraine, but also from all over the world, beginning in ancient times and continuing to the present. In the large number of pubs that are located within the city all can try different beers from both Lviv and the surrounding region as well as try specific Galician savories that go with the local beer.

Sports and recreation

The Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains, with the highest being Hoverla (2 061m), are in a 2 hour drive from Lviv. There are a wide range of activities for the avid adventurer regardless of the season. These activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, skydiving, skiing, and many more. There are also seven resort and spas in the area around Lviv. The Carpathian Mountains are not just primeval mountains; they also present the culture of mountain dwellers. 17
