SEASON GUIDE 2018/19

Photography: Aly Wight

Welcome to The Lyceum

I don’t know about you, but as the news seems to get ever darker I am increasingly in the mood for theatre that not only reflects the world around us but also provides a big dollop of respite - epic, timeless tales of the human spirit that can bring us cheer, excite us and fortify us.

The Artistic Director’s Development fund allows us to create ambitious and innovative productions like Local Hero.

I have put together a season of plays for next year with that aspiration in mind - some really big stories to bolster the spirits from a collection of names that deserve to be up in lights: William Shakespeare, Edmond Rostand, Edwin Morgan, J.M. Barrie, Ella Hickson, John Webster, Zinnie Harris and Bill Forsyth. I feel sure these are stories that will captivate you as they have me and we will be pulling out all the stops to bring them to the stage in remarkable productions. I hope that they will be stories that stay with you, that you can carry into the future – talismans against troubled times! Please join me for our free Talk Show events where we dive deep into these productions with a panel of exciting thinkers.

To find out how to donate to the fund, please visit lyceum.org.uk/support or call 0131 248 4831

William Shakespeare

“If music be the food of love, play on...” In Shakespeare’s bittersweet comedy genders blur, boundaries are crossed and the world is turned upside down, all with music as the engine for these bacchanalian shenanigans. Director Wils Wilson saturates this tale of magic and wonder with all the psychedelia and bohemian delight of the ‘summer of love’. Desire and grief collide in a heady cocktail as hidden emotions are aroused in a quartet of lovers. Meanwhile frivolity is edged with cruelty as the puritanical Malvolio, transformed for a time into a Technicolor alter-ego, is humiliated and abandoned; a man marooned, left behind by a generation he will never understand. So join Viola (or is that her twin brother Sebastian?), Orsino, Olivia, Toby Belch and his sidekick Andrew Aguecheek, and the rest of the household for Shakespeare’s most sparkling cocktail of wit and deep feeling. It’s sure to be the party of the year! Lyceum Associate Artist Wils Wilson’s vibrant production, performed by actormusicians, will include a score by Welsh Music Prize winner, Meilyr Jones, whose bold and beautiful compositions intertwine early music with contemporary tones. Co-produced with Bristol Old Vic. Production supported by The Lyceum Patrons.

By Edmond Rostand Translated By Edwin Morgan 4

“But think: your mooth, ma wurds, collaboration! She’ll melt, she’ll no resist that conflagration!” A passionate comedy of love, war and noses. The hugely romantic Cyrano de Bergerac is given a Caledonian heart in a new production of Edwin Morgan’s legendary Scots translation directed by Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill. The swashbuckling and flamboyant Cyrano has a personality as large as his nose but it’s this facial carbuncle that prevents him from revealing his love for Roxanne. He lends his poetic skills instead to the more outwardly handsome Christian, who wins Roxanne’s heart through his passionate ghost-written letters. Through the years, Cyrano continues to put quill to parchment, risking his life in the process, to express his true feelings for the woman who sees him only as a rambunctious uncle until it’s almost too late… An epic ensemble of actors and musicians use Morgan’s potent Scots verse to create a fresh take on this enduringly popular classic, first seen in a legendary production by Communicado 25 years ago. Brian Ferguson (A Number) plays the irresistible title character, while Tom Piper (Rhinoceros) designs a breathtaking set, with costumes from iconic British fashion designer Pam Hogg. Co-produced with National Theatre of Scotland and Citizens Theatre.

Based on the book by Joe Simpson Adapted by David Greig

8

WORLD PREMIERE

“Life can deal you an amazing hand. Do you play it steady, bluff like crazy or go all in?” What happens when you look death squarely in the face, and how do you find the strength to crawl back towards life? Joe Simpson’s memoir Touching the Void, an international bestseller and BAFTA-winning film sensation, charts his struggle for survival on the perilous Siula Grande mountain in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. The heart of the story is Joe Simpson’s mental battle as he teeters on the very brink of death and despair in a crevasse from which he can’t possibly climb to safety. Also unforgettable is the appalling dilemma of Simon Yates, perched on an unstable snow-cliff, battered by freezing winds and desperate to rescue the injured Simpson, who hangs from a rope below him. Knowing that they will both ultimately fall into the void, he makes the critical decision to cut the rope, changing both of their lives forever.

BOOK BY

BILL FORSYTH AND DAVID GREIG MUSIC & LYRICS BY

MARK KNOPFLER BASED ON THE SCREENPLAY OF THE ORIGINAL FILM, WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY BILL FORSYTH

10

WORLD PREMIERE

“We’re gonna be rich… filthy dirty rich!” A wry comedy about a man who sets out to buy a beach, but ends up losing his heart to a village, Bill Forsyth’s magical Local Hero takes to the stage with new music and songs by the legendary Mark Knopfler. Ambitious Texan oil executive Mac MacIntyre arrives in Scotland on a mission to buy a small seaside village and replace it with a refinery. It’s the deal of a lifetime, but Mac soon finds out that putting a price on this scenic spot is more complicated than he bargained for. Before the locals get rich, they must decide what a village is worth – a Maserati? A million? A marriage? Or is feeling at home worth more than even oil money can buy? Treasured by a generation in Scotland and loved far and wide, Local Hero is one of the defining moments of Scottish storytelling. Now the original creators of the international hit film and bestselling soundtrack Bill Forsyth and Mark Knopfler have teamed up with The Lyceum’s Artistic Director David Greig to create this brand new musical stage production with a multi-award winning creative team. Co-produced with The Old Vic. This production is generously supported by The National Lottery through Creative Scotland and presented by special arrangement with Neal Street Productions and Patrick Daly of Caledonia Productions

THE DUCHESS [OF MALFI]

BY JOHN WEBSTER ADAPTED BY ZINNIE HARRIS

12

“Whether we fall by ambition, blood, or lust, like diamonds we are cut with our own dust.” Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi is the most thrilling and chilling of the Jacobean revenge tragedies – an exploration of male rage and female resistance as two brothers try and control their sister, block her marriage and repress her agency with fatal results.

It was these themes of patriarchy versus female empowerment which convinced Zinnie Harris that the play is ripe for an adaptation which chimes with our contemporary concerns surrounding the abuse of male power. Webster’s dark tale of bloody treachery will be fuelled and retooled by Zinnie Harris’ insight, vivid imagery and dazzling prose which have been so heralded in her great adaptation of The Oresteia, This Restless House, (Citizens Theatre and National Theatre of Scotland) and her more recent versions of Ibsen’s The Master Builder (West Yorkshire Playhouse) and Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, which sold out at the Edinburgh International Festival and returned to great acclaim for The Lyceum Season 2017/18. She’ll also be directing the show, a welcome return after her awardwinning production of A Number seen on The Lyceum stage in 2017.

THE The Lyceum at the Festivals LYCEUM AT THE FESTIVALS Playing With Books

Following the success of last year’s events we present a co-production with Edinburgh International Book Festival, a theatrical exploration of scenes from three bestselling books with music, followed by a discussion with the creative teams.

THE ONE HUNDRED NIGHTS OF HERO

by Isabel Greenberg Saturday 11 August, 5.15pm

A gorgeous follow-up to her graphic novel The Encyclopedia of Early Earth, Isabel Greenberg’s The One Hundred Nights of Hero is set in the same world. It’s a rich tapestry of folk tales and myths highlighting a secret legacy of female storytellers. Playwright Ella Hickson will produce a short theatrical response to the graphic novel, with actors, a musician and a director. Then, Greenberg joins them on stage to discuss her work.

HOW TO BE BOTH

by Ali Smith Saturday 18 August, 4.30pm Brave, innovative and multi-award winning, Ali Smith’s How to Be Both is the dualnarrative novel that confirms her as one of Britain’s most talented living writers. Theatre-makers Julia Taudevin and Clare Duffy work with actors and a musician to create a 45-minute live performance inspired by the book. Afterwards, they are joined on stage by Ali Smith to discuss her unforgettable novel.

SIGNS PRECEDING THE END OF THE WORLD

by Yuri Herrera Saturday 25 August, 6.30pm

Mexican novelist Yuri Herrera’s Signs Preceding the End of the World charts the border between Mexico and the USA; a political hot potato since Donald Trump’s election. We present a theatrical exploration of scenes from the graphic novel, created with a director and playwright Linda McLean, followed by a discussion with members of the creative team. 14

DOCTORS OF PHILOSOPHY

By Muriel Spark Sunday 19 August, 5.30pm

Several of Spark’s novels have been adapted for theatre and film, but Doctors of Philosophy is the only one she wrote specially for the stage. In partnership with Edinburgh International Book Festival we present a rehearsed reading of the entire play. Hardly ever seen on stage since its London premiere in 1962, this is a very special one-off performance edited by David Greig and directed by Marilyn Imrie. The actors; the scenery; reality itself: everything is unreliable in this astonishing piece of theatre which demonstrates Muriel Spark at the peak of her powers. In a London theatre world dominated by ‘angry young men’, a sophisticated play by a Scottish middle-class woman was destined to gain little traction in the 1960s. Now its time has finally come.

PERFORMANCES & PRICES All performances take place in The Speigeltent at Edinburgh International Book Festival in Charlotte Square Gardens.

Evenings

£15 [£12 concessions] Edinburgh International Book Festival events go on sale to the general public on 26 June but a limited number of tickets to these performances are available to Lyceum audiences now via our Box Office.

by Sir David Lindsay

Directed by Ros Philips 3 – 26 August 2018 Tech Cube Zero, Summerhall Part of Made in Scotland at Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Directed by Joe Douglas Dramaturgy by Ian Brown Tuesday 7 August 2018 Part of Edinburgh International Festival

Tickets tickets.edfringe.com | 0131 226 0000 It’s 1982 and on Edinburgh’s Forth Street, two friends Bob and Sigrid are opening their new lesbian, gay and feminist book shop, ‘Lavender Menace’. A trailblazing venture that will become the beating heart for Edinburgh’s LGBT community.

“A play for our time that speaks volumes about cities and change” The Scotsman “Celebratory... a thoroughly entertaining and important piece of LGBT social history” The Stage “A stunningly beautiful play” The Reviews Hub A beautifully funny and moving exploration of the love and passion it takes to make something happen and the loss that is felt when you have to let it go, Love Song to Lavender Menace returns to Edinburgh after its sold-out Lyceum run in 2017.

Tickets eif.co.uk | 0131 473 2000 (Returns Only) 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of Tyrone Guthrie’s legendary production of Sir David Lindsay’s seminal 16th-century play Ane Satyre of The Thrie Estaitis, which was performed at Assembly Hall as part of the 1948 International Festival. Since then, numerous directors and writers have taken different approaches to this bold and, at times, contentious work. Director Joe Douglas and playwright Ian Brown – whose first original play, Carnegie, was produced at The Lyceum in 1973 – have interrogated the play and considered how it might be presented for a contemporary audience. Along with a company of actors, they will prepare a presentation of rehearsed sections of the play and a discussion about the nature of this unique work and its place in 21st-century theatre. Co-presented by Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, the Edinburgh International Festival and National Theatre of Scotland.
