Human nature – how we imagine ourselves and who we reveal ourselves to be – is a recurring theme in our latest Season. It is perhaps a theme that is always there, but it has particular focus for Season 2012/13. Just look at the painful and joyous confusion of lovers in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Or the complex collection of ‘guid sisters’ who gather round to ‘help’ Germaine Lauzon. Or the challenges faced by Donna Franceschild’s asylum inhabitants as they try to define themselves. The same is true of our plays by Shelagh Delaney, JB Priestley and David Haig. These are all big society plays presented at a time when tough economics challenge us to consider what the most precious values of our society are. Theatre and its great writers have a lot to say in this debate. Who wouldn’t want a society with values defined and led by William Shakespeare, JB Priestley, Shelagh Delaney, Michel Tremblay, Donna Franceschild, David Haig and Johnny McKnight?

We have three world premières, four co-productions and three great classics in a Season dedicated to celebrating theatrical excellence and adventure. An extraordinary 72 actors will walk our stage, performing distinctive work led by more than 20 artistic creatives. I am immensely proud that the Lyceum is able to play such a pivotal role in Scottish theatre. We appreciate that we are all still facing tough economic times so we have taken the decision this year not to raise the cost of tickets for the main run of each play – you can see any of our 2012/13 productions for the same price as last year. We have also introduced more previews than ever before which means more lower price tickets are available throughout the Season. And finally, we have held the prices for our Season Ticket which offers great discounts and benefits. I look forward to meeting you in the foyer or bar on one of your visits during Season 2012/13!

ABOUT THE LYCEUM

The Royal Lyceum Theatre Company is one of Scotland’s leading producing drama companies, with an excellent reputation for both classical and contemporary work.

With our strong Creative Learning programme, we deliver projects and training to schools, companies and individuals. Our Lyceum Youth Theatre, one of Scotland’s biggest and bestestablished youth theatre companies, involves over 300 young people ranging from 5 to 18 years old.

Our aim is to introduce as wide an audience as possible, no matter their age or theatre-going experience, to the colourful and imaginative world of drama.

All of this takes place within our beautiful late Victorian building in the West End of Edinburgh. Costumes and sets for Lyceum productions are designed and built by our team in our workshops at Roseburn, while the Company rehearse in the building opposite the theatre. This all comes together to create high quality theatre in a wonderful setting.

Committed to developing and supporting creative talent, we commission new work, stage contemporary plays and re-imagine classic theatre, as well as work alongside a selection of both prominent and progressive theatre companies from across the UK.

Germaine Luzon wins a million Green Shield stamps. She’s in for a windfall but she can only collect her winnings by sticking each and every stamp into her saver books. As the night wears on her kitchen fills to bursting with family, friends and neighbours eager to help Germaine (and maybe themselves). A riot ensues as this formidable group of women talk about life, the world and the men in their lives. This ‘rich, raucous and gritty’ Scots version of Quèbecois writer Michel Tremblay’s play Les Belles-Soeurs premiered at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow in 1989 and has not had a major revival since. The Lyceum and the National Theatre of Scotland present this Scots classic featuring a cast of 15 actresses: Romana Abercromby, Sally Armstrong, Jo Cameron Brown, Maureen Carr, Hannah Donaldson, Karen Dunbar, Lisa Gardner, Kathryn Howden, Molly Innes, Jane McCarry, Sally Reid, Ann Louise Ross, Gayle Runciman, Marianne Tees and Gail Watson. The Guid Sisters is directed by Serge Denoncourt, one of Canada’s leading directors noted for his work with Cirque du Soleil.

A TASTE OF HONEY By Shelagh Delaney Directed by Tony Cownie

A Taste of Honey is a British classic from the northwest of England. This drama of tenements, housing estates and bingo halls burst onto the stage in what was to become known as ‘kitchen sink drama’. Shelagh Delaney was only 18 when she finished A Taste of Honey, a remarkable achievement given that it addresses issues of class, gender, race and sexuality. When it opened in 1958 it revitalised British theatre and in 1961 was made into an award-winning film starring Rita Tushingham as Jo. This production will be directed by Tony Cownie (Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off; Educating Agnes).

But, in a twist of time and with a brief glimpse into the future, we discover that life doesn’t play out as expected. Aspirations sour, relationships fail and the truths of the Conway family’s lives are revealed. Priestley’s play is an extraordinary manipulation of time and the fates, coming to a climax as he subverts the narrative and takes us back to the original moment when this successful family began to sow the seeds of their own downfall. Time and the Conways was written in 1937 and illustrated JW Dunne’s Theory of Time. Alongside the better-known An Inspector Calls, Time and the Conways is part of Priestley’s series of ‘Time Plays’ that toyed with different concepts and theories of time, and is widely regarded as the best of this series.

Philanthropy makes things happen. From the earliest days of civilization, philanthropists have invested in the arts to make a difference, enabling artists to realise their dreams, and bring them to life for the benefit of society. Imagine a world without the work of William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart... they all depended on the support of philanthropic patrons to achieve their artistic ambitions which have undoubtedly inspired so many generations since. Scotland has a long and impressive history of investing in society with support for public art forms. Andrew Carnegie is considered the father of modern philanthropy, believing and advocating that, ‘no man can become rich without himself enriching others.’ We believe in reaching out and investing in the talent of Scotland, and establishing a creative legacy for future generations. If you share our vision that art can transform lives, contact us on 0131 248 4800 or at development@lyceum.org.uk We’d like to thank all those people whose support enables us to inspire Scotland and beyond.

YOUR DETAILS Title Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms/Other (please state)
