ere we are, another season, another chance to present you with a collection of some of the best theatre the world has to offer. I believe we have assembled a season that we can all be proud of and excited about. In a social climate where it might seem best to draw in our belts and pursue safe options, we’ve decided to offer boldness and adventure. To that end we have three world premières for you, new, exciting works crafted from classic originals. Each has been given its own stamp of thrilling modernity. I’m hugely excited that we are able to work with Vanishing Point for the first time (as well as welcoming back Belgrade Theatre, Coventry for the first time since Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) with a newly re-imagined The Beggar’s Opera. We’re also working with Jo Clifford again on his new work Every One after the towering success of Anna Karenina and Faust. Rounding off the season, a legend of the Scottish Arts scene, John Byrne, will bring us his wry take on the classic Chekhov comedy, The Cherry Orchard.

Of course in amongst all this new work there’s also space for some classic stories, deserving of their own place in our line-up. There’s a brilliantly tense and moving example of Arthur Miller’s later writing in The Price, and we have my own version of James Hogg’s startling and highly influential novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. I was lucky enough to adapt this for the stage a few years back and am now revisiting it. Then we have the hilariously dark, gloriously cruel comedy, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, from the writer of In Bruges, Martin McDonagh. And of course our legendary Christmas show which, this year, is that classic to end all classics, JM Barrie’s timeless, magical Peter Pan!

POWERFUL COLOURFUL URBAN BOLD The future’s here. It’s a brave new world, but wherever there’s a world there’s an underworld: muggers, smugglers, prostitutes, thieves. Nobody plays by the rules, least of all MacHeath – bandit, hedonist, superhero to some, villain to others. Among imitators and wannabes, he’s the genuine article. But where he goes, trouble is sure to follow. MacHeath has married Polly Peachum. But he fancies Lucy Lockit. Lucy Lockit fancies MacHeath, but Polly doesn’t want to share. Mr Peachum wants MacHeath’s head, and so does Mr Lockit. And so does the law. With so many enemies, it’s hard to tell who your friends are. John Gay’s 17th century play The Beggar’s Opera has been reconfigured to the not-sodistant future. A dark, seedy, absurd, visually rich and cruelly comic co-production featuring new music from Alasdair Macrae and A Band Called Quinn, cutting edge production design and a large cast of leading performers including Sandy Grierson as MacHeath. This promises to be one of the most exciting theatre events of 2009. This show is recommended for ages 14 and up. After its run at the Lyceum The Beggar’s Opera will transfer to Belgrade Theatre, Coventry (9–24 October, 0247 655 3055) and Tramway, Glasgow (28–31 October, 0845 330 3501). FAITH FANATICISM MURDER MADNESS If you knew that you were going to Heaven no matter what you did... what would you do? In this dark thriller, Robert Wringhim’s powerful faith in predestination means he knows his name is in the Book of the Saved. He will be going to Heaven and nothing he does can change it. Based on James Hogg’s classic 1824 novel, Confessions of a Justified Sinner looks at what a man will do when freed (in his own mind at least) from any moral restraints. When Wringhim’s religious certainty is combined with the devious whisperings of a mysterious figure known as Gil-Martin, he finds himself caught up in a blood-soaked life of criminal activity. Hogg’s superb tale of good, evil and the sometimes thin boundary that separates them was a major influence on the writing of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde. With many of the same terrifying themes running through this piece, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a spooky Edinburgh night this Autumn. Mark Thomson directs his own adaptation of this thought-provoking play. The cast includes Ryan Fletcher and Iain Robertson.

FAMILY LEGACY TRUTH CHOICE The Price is a pithy, funny and deeply moving story of two brothers reunited after many years to sort through the belongings of their long dead father. Victor ended up as a policeman while Walter has risen to become a leading doctor. Victor is weary and defeated, his brother happy and successful. And it soon becomes clear that the paths of their lives stem from one crucial decision made in their past. As they dispose of an attic full of family possessions their mutual resentments come to the surface and painful truths are exposed – all the while circled by Victor’s disappointed and pushy wife Esther, and wise old furniture dealer Solomon, who tries his best to play peacemaker. This was one of Miller’s most commercially successful plays, described by the New York Times as ranking alongside ‘if not above, Death of a Salesman’. It’s a tense and wonderful drama which sweeps its audience along in a brilliant depiction of family tensions. John Dove (The Man Who Had All the Luck, All My Sons, Death of a Salesman) will direct this acclaimed work from the greatest American playwright of the 20th century.

PROFOUND UPLIFTING MOVING BEAUTIFUL From the pen that brought Anna Karenina and Faust brilliantly to the Lyceum, comes this beautiful, poetic and metaphysical new piece. Jo Clifford explores the lives of an ordinary family who are aware that they are part of a story, and initially bemused by all the attention. The everyday concerns and events of their lives form the early part of the play – raising children, growing up, growing old. But all of this changes when Death comes calling. Plunged suddenly into a reality where they can no longer rely on the ‘certainties’ of existence, Joe, Mary, Kevin and Mazz must reassess their lives. Perspectives change and the things they cherish and regret are stripped of all the usual distractions and confusions. Jo’s play presents a warm and uplifting look at how ordinary people deal with tragedy. FAMILY POLITICS CLASS REVOLUTION John Byrne (Uncle Varick, Tutti Frutti, The Slab Boys) once again turns his renowned talents to the work of Chekhov in this gentle comedy of social upheaval. Here John retains the main plot of the original but relocates the action to Scotland in the 1980s. In doing so he crafts a wonderful retelling of this classic tale. In the far Northeast, time is almost up for the Ramsay-Mackays – their grand old house and the wonderful cherry orchard that goes with it are all that is left of their once-large fortune – and the vultures are circling... Malky McCracken is an up-and-coming young investor, eager to free himself from his working class roots and make his name as a serious businessman. His zealous pursuit of the estate is countered by his fondness for the family themselves, not least adopted daughter Verity. A comic and moving examination of a family, and those who surround it, revealing personal absurdities and tragedies in equal measure. John Byrne’s new adaptation and Tony Cownie’s direction mine the richness of Chekov’s tale to present a play of truly great characters.

The Lyceum Christmas show is always a very special part of Edinburgh’s winter celebrations – and this year is no exception. We’ve taken you over the rainbow to Oz and through the wardrobe to Narnia, now fly away with us to a place where children never have to grow up – Never Land! Peter Pan is the show to see this Christmas, with JM Barrie’s legendary boy hero soaring onto the Lyceum stage to entertain, astound and inspire. Gasp as Peter, Wendy, John and Michael (not to mention Tinker Bell and the Lost Boys!) do battle with the wicked Captain Hook and his pirate crew. It’s a world where crocodiles go tick-tock, fairies are real and children can fly – a place where dreams really come true! The show is directed by Jemima Levick who brought Lyceum audiences a superb version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in 2005, and whose amazing production of Sleeping Beauty (Dundee Rep) recently won Best Design at the Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland. The Wizard of Oz and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe were sold out for virtually every performance, so book early to avoid disappointment this year. The show is suitable for ages six and up – and perfect for adults too, whether they’ve grown up or not!

Join renowned theatre expert and historian Owen Dudley Edwards for his friendly and fun series of theatre classes. D ecide the day of the week you want by picking a performance code from the Performance Diary at the back of this brochure (page 30). Each show has a run of at least three weeks. Season Ticket holders book for the same day for every show and to make it simple each of these has a performance code (for example, the First Tuesday evening is Code A, while the Second Saturday matinee is Code M). Prices for each code are in the table below.

Choose where you want to sit and how many Season Tickets you want to book Some people prefer the Stalls, others prefer to be a little higher in the Grand Circle – either way, it’s the same price. Or there’s the Upper Circle where you’ll still get a great view but at a lower price. We’ll get you the best seats we can and if you have special requests (an aisle seat, extra leg room) say so on the form and we’ll do our very best to oblige. Complete the application form opposite, and send it back to us with your payment

Lyceum Programme for Schools Theatre Makers

A six-week programme for P4–P7 linked to the Curriculum for Excellence. Children work with specialists from the Lyceum on practical and creative elements of theatre making. Theatre Makers is delivered during school time as part of the school day. Each session is 75 minutes – five take place at the school and one at the Lyceum. The six-week Autumn Term block starts w/c 7 September 2009. Due to the specialist nature of this programme we can only work with a limited number of schools. Applications will be processed in order of receipt.

Backstage Tours Lyceum Theatre Tour: includes history of the Lyceum, theatre design, visiting the green room, under the stage and exciting technical aspects of the current production. Standard Grade Tour: especially designed for Standard Grade Drama groups. Tours are booked to fit in with our busy production schedule. Each tour lasts approximately one hour and costs £2 per head (minimum group size 10, maximum group size 20).

Resource Packs

This season we will produce a schools’ Resource Pack for Confessions of a Justified Sinner (see page 5) – this is available to download from our website from Monday 19 October, www.lyceum.org.uk/schools Resource Packs from previous productions are also available to download.

Lyceum Youth Theatre Lyceum Youth Theatre is one of Scotland’s biggest youth theatre companies and has established a name for itself as a producer of high quality contemporary theatre, by young people. The ethos of LYT is that of a professional theatre company; young people are given the opportunity to develop skills and learn from experienced tutors, working in a professional manner as young actors and theatre makers. As well as regular drama sessions, LYT offers the opportunity to participate in a range of projects, workshops and performances. LYT aims to give the broadest range of high quality theatre experiences in a positive and supportive environment so that young people can develop their skills, not only in theatre and performance but also in terms of communication, confidence and creativity.

Projects

Projects and workshops that you can take part in are on the page opposite. We offer a range of activities for different ages with opportunities for complete beginners as well as more experienced young performers. Places are offered on a firstcome-first-served basis.

Youth Theatre Classes

Due to the popularity of our youth theatre, unfortunately we are not currently able to accept new applications for the weekly classes. If you join our mailing list (see opposite) then we can let you know about upcoming projects and workshops and you will be the first to know when we are accepting applications again for the main youth theatre.

PROJECTS LYT Engage (13–18 years)

As part of our Engage programme, which gives young people the opportunity to try different drama activities, we offer fiveweek blocks of theatre skills sessions for 13–18 year olds. Inside the Lyceum Welcome to the Lyceum, let us show you around... Foyer

In our foyer you will find the Box Office on the right, and it’s here that you can collect your tickets and purchase programmes for the productions. On the left-hand side of the foyer is the Lyceum Shop where you can buy programmes, Lyceum merchandise, sweets and ice-creams. In the inner foyer there is a cloakroom just behind the Box Office where you can leave coats or bags for free. As you arrive, members of the Front of House team will assist you with directions or any questions you may have. You will also find the downtime clock above the door to the Howard Bar which tells you the approximate running time of the performance and whether there are any intervals.

Bars

Why not arrive early and enjoy a drink before the performance? The Howard Bar is accessed through the main foyer and is open from 6.30pm (1.30pm on matinee days). This is also the place to be after the shows, when you might have the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the cast and company. There is an extensive wine list on offer in the Howard Bar, available by the glass or by bottle.

There are also bars on the two upper levels of the theatre and these are usually open 30 minutes before the performance and at intervals. Interval drinks can be ordered at any of our bars and we do advise that you take advantage of this service. Drinks can be taken into the auditorium during the performance – please ask a member of the bar staff for a plastic tumbler.

Exhibitions

The Howard Bar is available as an exhibition space for local artists. Each exhibition lasts for the run of a production and there is also an opportunity to exhibit during the Edinburgh International Festival. Past exhibitors include John Byrne, Richard Demarco and Kate Leiper. Future exhibitors will include Catherine Johnson, Alan McCredie and Callum Monteith. The Royal Lyceum Theatre is delighted to be working with Standard Life for the sixth consecutive year to support services for our audience members with special needs and requirements. The theatre has street-level access and a lift to all levels. In the auditorium there are wheelchair spaces in the Stalls Boxes and several seats with opening armrests if wheelchair users wish to transfer into seats. We also have a wheelchair and a selection of cushions available to all customers to help make your visit more comfortable. If you require hearing enhancement you can borrow infra-red headsets from the Lyceum Shop. We also welcome guide dogs to the theatre and they can be taken into the auditorium. Our ushers are also more than happy to entertain them while you enjoy the show.
