ANNIVERSARY SEASON GUIDE 2015/16 TICKETS 0131 248 4848 lyceum.org.uk | 1

WELCOME TO THE LYCEUM In selecting the eight plays for our company’s 50th Anniversary Season I wanted to reflect what has made the company special over the last half century - a living theatre, confident and proud of its past with contemporary theatre voices and adventure always keeping it youthful and vigorous. To launch this anniversary season I am especially delighted to welcome back the fantastic Brian Cox, original member of the first Lyceum theatre company, returning to perform alongside another great Scottish actor Bill Paterson in Beckett’s modern masterpiece, Waiting for Godot.

On our stage this year there will be gods, kings, music, romance, murder, fauns, revenge, forgiveness, sex, faith, betrayal, enlightenment, characters who don’t turn up and others who wish they hadn’t. Together they hold the world in all its inexplicableness up to the light. I hope you enjoy watching and listening to them all.

Throughout the year we will continue to celebrate our past and look to the future with a powerful mix of theatre voices. Great writers like Beckett, Miller, Homer and Molière whose words and reflections still move and inspire us, stand alongside the vitality and urgency of today’s playwrights Liz Lochhead, Laura Wade and Chris Hannan. Their plays animate big, resonant subjects from war and love to belief, identity and existence itself.

Celebrate 50 years of Theatre Made in Edinburgh with a ticket to our Anniversary Season For 50 years the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company has been one of Scotland’s leading producing drama companies with a world class reputation for both classical and contemporary work, and for developing and supporting Scotland’s creative talent. Individual tickets are on sale now, but this season is the perfect time to join 3,000 other Season Ticket holders to enjoy a journey through a whole year of extraordinary theatre from the best seats at the best prices - guaranteed. For more details and to buy your Season Ticket see back page.

Waiting Godot by Samuel Beckett

|

18 September – 10 October 2015

“What are we doing here? That is the question” Two of Scotland’s great stage actors; Brian Cox and Bill Paterson star as Vladimir and Estragon in Samuel Beckett’s masterly black comedy. On a bare country road, by a single tree, two down-and-out friends meet at dusk to await the arrival of the mysterious Mr. Godot. As they wait, they pass the time laughing at who they are, arguing over what little they have and speculating on the meaning of life. Their predicament would be absurd were it not so familiar. In the 60 years since its first UK performance, Waiting for Godot has proved itself one of modern theatre’s great masterpieces. Deadly serious yet seriously funny, this elusive play continues to provide delightfully entertaining food for thought. This exclusive three week run marks the 50th Anniversary of the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company.

World Premiere 28 October – 14 November 2015

“I used to think that whenever I thought of you I was all lit up, like a candle. I was afraid people would notice.” It’s 1887 and Nancy Astley sits in the audience at her local music hall: she doesn’t know it yet, but the next act on the bill will change her life. Tonight she will fall in love… with the thrill of the stage and with Kitty Butler; a girl who wears trousers. Giddy with desire and hungry for experience, Nancy follows Kitty to London where unimaginable adventures await. Acclaimed playwright Laura Wade (Posh, Royal Court & West End) brings Sarah Waters’ audacious bestselling novel to The Lyceum’s beautiful Victorian stage in an electrifying new adaptation, directed by Olivier award winner Lyndsey Turner (Chimerica, Almeida & West End).

The Crucible 12 |

Photograph: Laurence Winram

by Arthur Miller

18 February – 19 March 2016

“I danced for the Devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil!” When young women are discovered trying to conjure spirits, the God-fearing people of Salem, Massachusetts are told the devil is in their midst and must be rooted out at all costs. Accusations fly, scores are settled, and fear and suspicion reign. With terrifying power and momentum their faith becomes a murderous instrument of lust, paranoia and revenge. Written during Joe McCarthy’s anticommunist trials in America, this classic tale of the witch hunts in colonial New England still stands as a powerful parable against the politics of fear. Following huge acclaim for All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Price and A View from the Bridge, John Dove returns to direct The Crucible, completing The Lyceum’s acclaimed journey through the best loved works of Arthur Miller.

THOMAS I AM

A BRUTAL COMEDY WITH SONGS

14 |

World Premiere 23 March – 9 April 2016

“It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.” Edinburgh, a cold town on the edge of civilization, in very much the Year of Our Lord, 1696. The church has spies everywhere, each with a sharp ear for heresy and a taste for persecution. Here you keep your counsel and choose your words with care… and it is here that we meet Thomas – a loudmouthed, smart arsed, and likeable student of the university. A man in the wrong place at absolutely the wrong time… trouble is brewing for Thomas. Using Told by an Idiot’s trademark anarchic physicality and inventive storytelling, this glimpse into Edinburgh’s dark past brings out the black humour in the true story of Thomas Aitkenhead – the last person in Britain to be executed for blasphemy.

THE ILIAD by Chris Hannan

16 |

World Premiere 20 April – 14 May 2016

“There is the heat of love, the pulsing rush of longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible – magic to make the sanest man go mad.” The Gods of Olympus take their sides and the fates of all men hang in the balance. On the battlefield of Troy the scene is set for the final conflict to claim the beautiful Helen. Only the invincible Greek warrior Achilles can tip the scales of war to glory or defeat, but humiliated by his leader Agamemnon, he is stubbornly refusing to join the fray. Homer's Iliad, the greatest and most influential epic poem ever written, tells of the tragic and bloody climax to the ten-year siege of Troy; the darkest episode in the Trojan War. This great tale of gods and heroes, love, jealousy and revenge is brought to visceral life in a brand new stage adaptation by award winning Scottish playwright Chris Hannan (Crime and Punishment, Elizabeth Gordon Quinn, Shining Souls).

‘or Whit got him intae aw that bother...’

by Liz Lochhead

18 |

World Premiere 20 May – 11 June 2016

“Why do folk not, ever, catch on to themselves?...Ach, gies you another interesting nutter to play...” Welcome to Paris at the time of Louis XIV. Come backstage and meet the King’s theatre company - a troupe of grande dames, old hams, ingénue’s and of course, their leading man. Right at the centre, author of their dramas and cause of all their troubles – Thon man Molière. In constant threat of debtor’s prison, in big bother with church and state and - worst of all – disastrously in love with the wrong wife, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin de Molière writes brilliant comedies inspired by a desperate life. But telling the truth is a dangerous business and getting his latest drama on stage could be the death of him! Poet and playwright Liz Lochhead is the author of the acclaimed Perfect Days, and Mary Queen of Scots got her Head Chopped Off, as well as celebrated Scots versions of Medea, Oedipus, Antigone and Molière's great trio of masterpieces. This brand new, original play tells the story of her hero, the great comedian Molière; his scandalous marriage, his scurrilous plays and the irresistible creation of his infamous and celebrated satire Tartuffe.
