WELCOME to

the LYCEUM

I

Season 2010/11

t is always pleasing when presenting a programme of plays to feel that the span of work could touch everyone, that the resources and artistic direction of the programme are expansive, generous, ambitious and with the gift of the new. I hope that you’ll agree when you see our list of plays that this Season’s fare fits the bill.

ROMEO AND JULIET

We are tackling a number of big classic works this year with Romeo and Juliet, The Importance of Being Earnest, Educating Agnes (Liz Lochhead’s version of Molière’s The School for Wives) and A View from the Bridge. They are famous and substantial pieces that demand an approach which is bold, thoughtful and imaginative to tell their great stories and reveal their power and wit for a contemporary audience. We have the new in Sue Glover’s world première of her play Marilyn and the British première of Canadian playwright Linda Griffiths’ Age of Arousal. We end the Season with the Scottish première of David Greig’s triumphant Royal Shakespeare Company hit Dunsinane (his sequel to Macbeth) which the National Theatre of Scotland will present in association with the Lyceum.

BY ARTHUR MILLER Directed by John Dove

As well as working with the National Theatre of Scotland and RSC to bring Dunsinane to Edinburgh we are working with the brilliant Stellar Quines Theatre Company and also the terrific Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. These partnerships will inspire and broaden the availability of the work we all make. There’s plenty of laughter here too and lots of opportunities to find real human engagement as we all seek communal experiences to help bind us together. Theatre brings that. I see it every time I step inside our theatre. As I look along the landscape of plays this year there are extraordinary minds looking at love, sexual politics, identity, family and the divisions that may destroy us. I hope we can welcome you to the Lyceum many times during our Season to see the plays and also to join in the whole creative programme that our team has pulled together for your enjoyment.

“Is love a tender thing… it pricks likes a thorn.” Arguably Shakespeare’s most passionate and heartbreaking drama, Romeo and Juliet unravels the tangle of emotions in the hearts and minds of the forbidden lovers, and their friends and families. The play is an elegy for doomed youth, exploring the damage that social divisions and family feuds can inflict. The impact on Shakespeare’s star cross’d lovers, and on the society around them, is overwhelming. The outcome is lies, conflict and the play’s famously tragic ending.

“Once I am a citizen… I would start to be something wonderful here.” Arthur Miller’s modern social tragedy explores the life and loves of the family of a dock worker in post-war New York. Eddie Carbone lives with his wife and niece, a happy enough family with an intense love and sense of duty locking them together. But life becomes a struggle for meaning when the family is rocked by the arrival of two illegal immigrant cousins, and tensions mount as an eruption of violence beckons. With underlying themes of identity, personal politics, sexuality and the law, Miller’s tale of ordinary human beings and their extraordinary lives is a richly textured story in keeping with his other plays, Death of a Salesman, The Price and All My Sons. Lyceum Associate Artist John Dove returns to direct.

“ Tell the men we’ll be in Scotland a little longer than we expected.” Macbeth is dead. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the land, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, the commanding officer is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards the tyrant’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war. David is a multi award-winning Scottish playwright whose play with music Midsummer was a hit of the 2009 Edinburgh Festival. His work is regularly produced by the National Theatre of Scotland with his new version of Peter Pan touring the UK in 2010. His most recent production for the RSC was The American Pilot.

“On winter nights when we are asleep she flies silently through the streets…” From her ice palace at the very top of the world, the wicked Snow Queen plans to turn everything to winter – no more summer, no more sunshine, no more warmth, no more holidays making sandcastles on the beach… She starts by casting her spell over one little boy, Kay, turning his heart cold and letting him see only misery and ugliness in the world. But Kay’s friend Gerda has always thought of Kay as a brother, and together with the beasts of the forest and the sun spirit Bhima, she undertakes a quest to save him – and the rest of mankind – from eternal chill! Stuart Paterson’s plays have long been popular with young audiences, especially at the Lyceum, and we’re delighted to be revisiting one of his earliest, most beautiful and most popular adaptations of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytales. Guaranteed to put warmth into the coldest of hearts, however young or old you are! The Snow Queen is suitable for ages 5+, and perfect for adults too, whether they’re grown up or not… Directed by Lyceum Artistic Director Mark Thomson (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 2008) and starring Allison McKenzie (Macbeth, River City) as The Snow Queen.

WHY SHOULD I GET A Season

Ticket?

Join around 3,000 Lyceum Season Ticket holders in taking advantage of guaranteed seats for all seven shows this year. Take advantage of fantastic savings, and flexibility in switching dates when required.

BEST seats

FLEXIBILITY

With a Season Ticket, you can book the best seats in the house and make sure of getting them for every show.

BIG savings

Season Tickets allow you to make big savings on your tickets – full details of pricing are in the table below but you could save up to £35 compared with buying individual tickets for all seven shows.

A Season Ticket helps you to arrange your diary in advance – but if you find later on that you need to change a date, it’s simple to do at no extra charge*. If you move to a more expensive night, we’ll ask you to pay the price difference on your ticket; move to a cheaper night, and we’ll credit your customer account! * Subscribers get one free ticket exchange per show. Subsequent changes will be charged at the standard rate of 50p per ticket.

UPPER Circle

SPECIAL subscriber discounts

We offer Season Tickets for the Upper Circle as well as the lower levels – this means you can enjoy a comfortable seat with a great view at a lower cost.

STUDENT & UNDER 18 Season Tickets We also offer Season Tickets to Students and Under 18s so that young people can come along and enjoy theatre at an affordable cost.

As well as getting cheaper tickets, a Season Ticket means you can take advantage of a number of exclusive subscriber discounts, including savings on: • Our fabulous Christmas show, The Snow Queen (see page 12) • Tickets to visiting productions at the Lyceum (subject to discretion of the company) • All drinks and snacks at our theatre bars • Lyceum programmes

OKAY, I WANT ONE – WHAT’S NEXT?

It’s simple. There are just 3 easy steps to arrange your Season Ticket:

1

D ecide what day of the week you want to come to the show by picking a performance code from the diary at the back of this brochure (Page 30) Each show has a run of at least three weeks. Season ticket holders book for the same day for every show and to make it simple each of these has a performance code (eg. the first Tuesday evening of each run is Code A, while the second Saturday matinee is Code M). Prices for each code are in the table below.

2

Choose where you want to sit and how many Season Tickets you want to book

3

Complete the application form opposite, and send it back to us with your payment

Some people prefer the Stalls, others prefer to be a little higher in the Grand Circle – either way, it’s the same price. Or there’s the Upper Circle, where you’ll still get a great view but at a lower price. We’ll get you the best seats we can and if you have any special requests (eg. an aisle seat, extra leg room, etc), just say so on the form and we’ll do our very best to oblige. We’ll just need your contact details, info on what seats you’d like and how many, and for which days. Then just decide how you want to pay – card, cheque or with our interest-free Direct Debit (see reverse of this page) – and after that you can leave it to us, and we’ll sort all the rest out for you.

AND THAT’S IT – easy as 1, 2, 3!
