fter a successful Autumn of Love with Romeo and Juliet and The Importance of Being Earnest, followed by Christmas fun with The Snow Queen, the company is in rude health and is looking forward to a powerful and vibrant spring season of plays for you. With the world feeling unsteady on its feet, maybe theatre can offer a few hours’ respite to make you laugh, forget, reflect and be entertained by some of the finest work on the Scottish stage. With the addition of an extra show in June, our spring feels like a season in its own right. Five pieces of theatre served up on the dynamic stage in our unique Victorian theatre. We hope you are just as up for it as we are! We open with John Dove’s fifth and final Arthur Miller production for the Lyceum, and in A View From the Bridge he’s chosen to go out on a real powerhouse classic. After that we’re working with our friends at Stellar Quines on a co-production of Linda Griffiths’ tale of late Victorian sexual politics, Age of Arousal. And a second co-production follows (this time with the Citizens Theatre) in the world première of Marilyn, Sue Glover’s fascinating examination of the relationship between Marilyn Monroe and Simone Signoret. For our final two plays of 2010/11 we’ll have Liz Lochhead working her magic with Molière’s School for Wives, in her own Educating Agnes, before the arrival of David Greig’s incredible piece, Dunsinane, presented by the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Shakespeare Company. As I hope you’ll agree, it’s a truly mouthwatering collection. Join us!

“Once I am a citizen… I would start to be something wonderful here.” Arthur Miller’s modern social tragedy explores the life and loves of the family of a dock worker in post-war New York. Eddie Carbone lives with his wife and niece, a happy enough family with an intense love and sense of duty locking them together. But life becomes a struggle for meaning when the family is rocked by the arrival of two illegal immigrant cousins, and tensions mount as an eruption of violence beckons. With underlying themes of identity, personal politics, sexuality and the law, Miller’s tale of ordinary human beings and their extraordinary lives is a richly textured story in keeping with his other plays, Death of a Salesman, The Price and All My Sons. Lyceum Associate Artist John Dove returns to direct the last in our series of Miller plays. Cast includes: Stanley Townsend, Liam Brennan, Gunnar Cauthery, Richard Conlon, Kathryn Howden, Kirsty Mackay, Grant O’Rourke, Greg Powrie, Jeremiah Reynolds, Douglas Russell.

“Nobody ever said Lady Macbeth was a brunette.” Holding up a mirror to the notion of stardom and the pressure of fame, Marilyn offers a glimpse into the private lives of two extraordinary women. During the summer of 1960, Marilyn Monroe and French actress Simone Signoret live in adjacent apartments of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Thrown together while Monroe films the movie Let’s Make Love with Signoret’s husband, Yves Montand, the pair form an uneasy friendship, plagued by jealousy and insecurity. Under the watchful eye of Patti, hairdresser to the stars, it becomes a relationship that will test their deepest beliefs and threaten to destroy them both. Uncover the raw complexities of celebrity lives in this fascinating portrayal of two of the world’s greatest film stars. Best known for the modern classic Bondagers, Sue Glover is a renowned Scottish writer for stage, radio and television. This new play will receive its world première at the Citizens Theatre. It will play there from 17 February –12 March. www.citz.co.uk

“ Tell the men we’ll be in Scotland a little longer than we expected.” Macbeth is dead. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the land, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, the commanding officer is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards the tyrant’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. David Greig’s exhilarating play is a vision of one man’s attempt to restore peace in a country ravaged by war. David is a multi award-winning Scottish playwright whose play with music Midsummer was a hit of the 2009 Edinburgh Festival. His work is regularly produced by the National Theatre of Scotland. This production is directed by Roxana Silbert and includes members of the original RSC cast – Siobhan Redmond, Brian Ferguson and Jonny Phillips.

National Theatre Connections is a nationwide celebration of young theatre talent. Ten thrilling new plays have been commissioned by the National Theatre from some of today’s most exciting writers. Now, young theatre companies perform them for the first time in what promises to be an exciting, lively and inspiring event.
Spencer has been told to face the wall and intends to do so and Dean should have gone to the toilet before class. All of the pupils are aware that out on the street a repatriation of another fallen British soldier is about to begin and Leo really wants to go. Bassett is a darkly comic, powerful look at young people questioning their country and beliefs while living in a world where they can hardly remember a time when we were not at war. Bassett appears as part of NT Connections 2011.

Room HIRE Having a party? Need an inspirational setting for a meeting? The Lyceum is the perfect venue. The Lyceum offers a suite of rooms with an elegant and theatrical setting, perfect for a wedding reception, birthday party or staff away day. On the Grand Circle level there are two rooms, which have been refurbished to an extremely high standard with help from Tods Murray – the Ellen Terry and Henry Irving rooms. These rooms can accommodate a private dinner party for up to 40 people or a drinks and buffet reception for up to 80. Alternatively, we can set them up in the meeting style you require. The elegant Wyndham Bar on the same level also has room for up to 80 and provides a wonderful space for dancing if you want your event to go with a swing. Our rooms are available daytime and evenings and we can arrange catering and bar staff to suit your requirements. For more information on room hire and catering contact Manuele Biondi, Bars and Events Manager, on 0131 248 4800 or email mbiondi@lyceum.org.uk
Meetings, away days and workshops
As well as providing an inspirational space for your team meeting or company away day, the Lyceum Creative Learning team are able to deliver a range of staff development workshops and team building exercises and would be delighted to discuss with you any requirements you may have. For more information on workshops and training, contact Lucy Vaughan, Head of Creative Learning, on 0131 248 4838 or email lvaughan@lyceum.org.uk
