Letter from the President As my first quarter as president and I can t r u l e y say I am honored to lead this chapter for my last year at OU. We have had a very busy quarter with huge events, regional retreat, fundraising, recruitment and community service opportunities on top of our busy schedules and all working to graduate on time. We strive to keep our chapter strong and visible on campus. We have implemented a ‘letter day’ where one day out of the week we all wear letters. We have also been hosting large events around campus. On a regional level we hope to start traveling more throughout the region as we have been to Indiana and Bowling Green so far. I hope this edition of the Gamma Gazette provides you with more in-depth information on what Zeta Gamma has been up to this quarter and all of us here are greatly looking forward to our 5th year chapter anniversary/ reunion! As always if you have any comments please feel free to contact me, I wish you all a safe travel back to OU this fall :) Christina ‘Ayana’ Cassan #15

We kicked off Hispanic H e r i t a g e M o n t h addressing H u m a n Trafficking on domestic as well as international levels. Theresa Flores a Sex Slave survivor/ Author and Naddia Lucchin Ohio’s Campaign Director of Not For Sale were our guest speakers. About 100 people were in attendance and we were educated on what is considered Human Trafficking. The speakers explained why and how it happens, we were informed that Ohio lacks laws on it and what we were told what we can do to help abolish modern day slavery. If you’re interested in hearing Theresa’s Story you can pick up a copy of her book ‘A Sacred Bath,’

I can promise you the book will be worth it, her story is very sad but touching at the same time. We teamed up with the Betas for our other hispanic heritage month event and hosted the hip hop activism group Rebel Diaz. G1, RodStarz and Soror Lah Tere hosted a hip hop and activism workshop in Baker that informed participants about the origins of Hip Hop. Later that evening they performed at 19 south. Overall it was a great event and we hope to bring them back to OU!

Community Service This quarter has been off to a great start with volunteering in the community. Our chapter sponsored the Empower 5k run as well as volunteered throughout the morning of the race. There was a huge turnout for the event and people of all sizes, shapes, and colors came out to support the efforts in Africa. Coming soon there is MVP, which is a week long event that we have all volunteered to help with on various days.

Recruitment

Currently we have 2 strong interests. Both women seem to be very motivated and excited to start their journey towards becoming a Sister. We have some social events planned with the interests. First and second round interviews are quickly approaching in early November. We are still trying to recruit and have a couple other girls who are interested but like you all know we are looking for Quality over Quantity.

The Zeta Gamma Gazette is a quarterly publication created by the Ohio University Zeta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.
