1960 - Creatures
1960 - “Creatures” That is the name I gave to my works from this period and because is features are fundamentally organic. Besides, the hinge that joints the planes made me think of the spinal column. The displaying of the metallic plates determines the positions of the “Creature”, which at first look seem unlimited. Whenever I am asked about how many movements the “creature” can make, I answer: “I don’t know, you don’t know, but it knows…” The ‘Creature” has no upside down. Each “Creature” is an organic entity that reveals itself totally inside of its inner time of expression. He has a likeness to a snail and a shell: it is a live organism, a work essentially active. Between you and it happens a total interaction, an existential one. In the relationship between you and the “creature” there is no passivity, neither from you or from it. A kind of closed fight between two live entities. It does happen in fact a dialogue in which the “creature” has its proper answers and well defined stimulus to the spectator. Formerly metaphoric, this relation between man and the “creature” becomes real.

The “Creature” has its own circuit of movements that commands the stimulus of the spectator. It is not made of independent or motionless forms that can be manipulated at random and indefinitely like in a game. Quite the contrary: its parts relates to each other in a functional way as in live and real organism, and the movement of each of its parts is wholly independent. In this relationship between you and the “Creature” there are two kinds of movements. The first one made by you, is purely external. The second, the one from the “Creature” is made by the dynamics of its own expression. In the former (the movement you do) there is nothing to do with the “creature” yet because it does not belong to it. In another hand joint of your gesture with the immediate answer from the “Creature” establishes a new relationship and this can only happen due to the movements it can do: it is its own life.
