The JCC of Greater Rochester will be relevant to every member of our Jewish community. The mission of the JCC is to strengthen Jewish identity and promote Jewish continuity through all stages of life. This is accomplished in an environment that provides opportunities for meaningful cultural enrichment, physical well being and social, educational and recreational experiences for individuals and families. Dear JCC Members... We continue to marvel at the unique qualities of our JCC. We can think of nowhere else in Rochester where, under one roof, you can meet friends, stretch and flex your muscles, enjoy a cup of matzo ball soup, see a theatrical production, listen to the wisdom of an acclaimed author, celebrate holidays, screen an international film, and take an art class. Where else can you sip a smoothie, relax while your children play, take a yoga class, and enjoy a massage? The JCC is truly the heart and soul of our community. With two, three, and even four generations of families growing up, socializing, learning, and getting fit at our JCC, it is an amazing place. A very large part of our success has been the incredible ongoing support our community has provided. This support has allowed us to grow, evolve, and continue to meet the ever-changing needs of our diverse community. As most of you are aware, we embarked on the Our Vision, Our Future Capital Campaign in 2013 in order to: • Provide much-needed renovations, including a new pool and outdoor splash park • Centralize and expand our fitness spaces • Make necessary infrastructure improvements • Reinvigorate community spaces

Construction began in May. Included in the JCC’s Building Project is the complete renovation of the existing pool, which will reopen this fall as interior renovations begin. The entire project is slated to be completed in the summer of 2016. We are thrilled to tell you that, to date, more than 600 donors have contributed a total of $13.6 million to our campaign—90 percent of our $15.2 million goal. We still need to raise close to $2 million, with generous contributions from many more members of our community. When we ask for support, we are giving someone the opportunity to fulfill a mitzvah, the Hebrew word for “good deed.” After all, what could feel better than knowing that you are going to have an impact on your community today and on future generations? We are incredibly excited about the impact this campaign can have for the present and future of the JCC of Greater Rochester and would love for you to share in our enthusiasm. When you give to the Our Vision, Our Future Capital Campaign, you are investing in our future and, in turn, our ability to provide programs and services to our members and the community. We are happy to meet with you to discuss the potential of your gift to the Capital Campaign. For a personal journey through the new spaces, please call our Development Director, Sarah Goldstein Post, at 585-461-2000, ext. 210 and she will be happy to arrange a meeting.

IT’S NOT JUST

“T

Theatre Vacation Camps will take place in December, February, and April during school breaks. Each will offer different content, so children will enjoy attending all of them. And introducing! The director of the TYKEs program as well as the creator of all of the new offerings for our young actors is Freyda Schneider. Freyda has spent most of her adult life involved in children’s theatre. “I adore children’s theatre and always wanted to start a company that followed my own vision. Twelve years ago, I met Gina Donahue, who had a similar vision…and together TYKEs was born.” TYKEs will launch its 12th season with the production Curious George in November, based on the popular series of books by H.A. and Margret Rey. TYKEs performances originally took place on the third floor of the Auditorium Center downtown. Freyda remembers it fondly: “I was very pregnant and I traveled to the diamond district in NYC to sell my great-grandmother’s wedding ring to scrape up enough money to pay for the wood to build our first set and the fabric for the costumes for our first show, a hilarious version of Rapunzel written by the creators of the TV show Friends. The tower of Rapunzel’s castle was so heavy that my not-very-expensive wheels (that ring wasn’t worth quite as much as I had hoped!) could barely move the revolving set piece.” From there, Freyda brought TYKEs performances to the Hart Theater at the JCC, and ultimately, TYKEs evolved to become a part of the JCC's CenterStage Theatre. 17

Our Vision, Our Future JCC Capital Campaign & Building Project

Building Project Construction

Due to this summer’s renovation of the JCC pool, Rob West is like a “fish out of water”! Recently appointed as the JCC's new Aquatics Director, Rob’s first three months have been “sans pool.” What a start for a guy who has surfed, swam with sharks along the Great Barrier Reef, snorkeled with dolphins, become a scuba diver, played collegiate water polo, and used swimming as a means to overcome childhood asthma! However, it’s all positive from here! By mid-September the JCC pool will be in full swing. Meanwhile, Rob is planning exciting classes for the pool, and is ready to “dive right in,” if you'll excuse the pun!

Inside and outside, things, they are a-changin’! Clockwise, top left to right: leveling terrain behind the JCC to prepare for the addition; scaffolding used in complete pool renovation; removing the back wall panels from the building to connect the old with the new!

Originally from Australia, Rob made his way to the USA through Camp Seneca Lake, where he worked for four summers. Rob explains it best: ”I wish to pass on to others the ability to enjoy the water. It is a fantastic way to improve your overall fitness level and also gain confidence in yourself. I eagerly look forward to having you join us in our renovated pool this fall.”
