Dear JCC Members... It’s almost summer, and at the JCC, summer means camp. With day camps, residential camp, teen programs, Family Camp, and more, we offer something for everyone. This summer, we are thrilled to announce the expansion of Theatre Young Kids Enjoy (TYKEs) into a year-round children’s theatre program! TYKEs has been consistently voted the #1 children’s theatre in town by participants in the Rochester kidsoutandabout.com survey, and its shows always sell out. Beginning with KidStage this summer at Camp Sisol, look for new opportunities for children of all ages to make their mark on the JCC stage and join TYKEs in the magical world of theatre. We are pleased to be sending the largest delegation of teens to Israel through our Camp Seneca Lake “CSL in Israel” program in its third year. Thirty-seven teens will be traveling to Israel this summer to immerse themselves in Israel’s land, history, culture, politics, and society, exploring the beauty and depth of Israel from the inside out. We are so excited to hear of their adventures and live vicariously through their photographs, as together they experience this once-in-a-lifetime summer to remember. Earlier this spring, Aaron Cantor, the Director of Camp Seneca Lake, traveled to Israel to participate in the Jewish Agency for Israel’s Summer Shlichim Program. The Shlichim “Israel Emissaries” program places young Israelis at summer camps throughout the nation, where they use their training and expertise to bring Israel to life. This summer, Camp Seneca Lake is proudly hosting nine shlichim, while a tenth shaliach will be placed at Camp Sisol to serve our day camp community. If you're looking for something beyond our traditional day camp experience, check out Camp Sisol’s KidSport and other specialty camps for children entering grades 3-6 as well as our outstanding teen travel program for teens entering grades 7-9. All programs proudly infuse Jewish culture and traditions seamlessly into daily camp life while remaining accessible and welcoming for all. Take the whole family and join us August 28-30 at Camp Seneca Lake for an allinclusive three-day, two-night vacation at Family Camp! Shabbat services on the lake, swimming, boating, crafts, campfires, delicious food, and more await you at one of the most picturesque locations in the Finger Lakes.

Trainer: Rob West JCC Member: His entire life What is your weekly exercise regimen? Every day is “abs” day. Monday I train with Rob. Tuesday I rest or do cardio. Wednesday is “push” day. Thursday is “pull” day. Friday is “leg” day.

How has using a Personal Trainer worked for you? It helps me cope with stress and provides a healthy after-school activity. I had set goals and have succeeded within the first six weeks of training with Rob.

What advice can you give others about keeping physically active throughout life? Keeping physically active is important because it helps you deal with everything at school. Since working out, my schedule has been more

What part of your workout regimen do you DREAD? Mondays! It’s a love-hate relationship with Rob!

Junk foods you cannot resist? I eat a lot of food. I eat pretzels, but I don't think that’s a bad food. I don’t even like cake. I like ice cream and frozen yogurt, but I don't overdo it.

Favorite music to work out to? I don’t listen to music much when I work out. I don’t think it's necessary.

Who was your childhood hero? I never wanted to be like someone specific, but my family and my Camp Seneca Lake family put me on the right path. I learn more during one summer at camp than in a whole year at school.

JCC Member: 20+ years What is your weekly exercise regimen? I train with Bev one day on the TRX equipment. I also take a one-hour weekly Pilates Reformers class. In between, I practice TRX and do cardio (spin or cross-trainer) 3-4 days per week.

How has using a Personal Trainer worked for you? I find that it’s quite crucial to ensure that I do the exercises correctly and that I don’t get into a habit of doing the same exercises. Bev comes up with some creative routines for me every month. Most of the time, I follow her instructions without deviation...but then there are those times when my stamina begins to decrease and I “muscle through” the exercise instead of moving correctly. It’s during these times that Bev’s instructions are critical to making sure I get the greatest benefit of each exercise and don’t injure myself. When working out alone, I can often hear Bev’s voice: “Engage your abs...open your chest...” and that keeps me out of trouble!

What advice can you give others about keeping physically active throughout life?

As Bev often tells me, “A body in motion stays in motion.” When I first started training, I was having knee discomfort. A few cortisone shots helped initially but the effect was not long-lasting. Bev helped me develop incredible muscle strength to the point that I virtually have no knee pain. This makes a big difference, not only while working out but in life. Everything in life requires maintenance and keeping active helps to prevent those costly repairs, physically and cognitively.

What part of your workout regimen do you DREAD? Haha...if I dreaded any of it, I probably wouldn’t be there. No matter how challenging, Bev can figure out a way to modify an exercise so that my muscles learn the move in a gentle way and then advance from there.

Junk foods you cannot resist? Before I became vegan, there wasn’t anything that didn’t taste good with Nutella...don’t get me started!

Favorite music to work out to? My favorite music during cycling classes is anything that has a driving beat that matches what we’re doing. Of course, when I pass a Zumba® class and hear a reggae or Latin tune, I can’t resist!

Who was your childhood hero? My grandfather, who was an orthodontist. Ever since I can remember, he would tell me to dream big and to have many dreams in case my first choice wasn’t within reach. What great advice that was. I follow it to this day.

THOMAS ZAHAVI 45

Trainer: Joween Opperman, for over six years JCC Member: 11 years What is your weekly exercise regimen? My regimen includes two hour-long sessions of weights with Joween; 2 to 3 one-two hour bike rides; 2-3 days I run 3-10 miles; 1-2 days of swim training; 1 recovery day.

How has using a Personal Trainer worked for you? About 6 ½ years ago, I had a conversation with a friend. I mentioned to him how difficult it is for me to commit to training and to make it to the gym early morning. He recommended a Personal Trainer as it has been working for him for many years. I took his advice, and here I am more than six years later.

What advice can you give others about keeping physically active throughout life?

keep you motivated to train. Once you train long enough, you get hooked!

What part of your workout regimen do you DREAD? Pull-ups! Difficult to breathe while hanging up there…

Junk foods you cannot resist? I keep a pretty strict plant-based diet with no wheat or added oils. But when I’m in NYC or Israel, I cannot resist my favorite falafel, hummus, and pita bread, preferably with ‘Schug’ (hot sauce) and Coca-Cola to intensify the burning sensation. It brings back childhood memories.

Favorite music to work out to? Mostly pop and some rock

I know it may sound like a commercial for the JCC, but I would recommend a Personal Trainer. For cardio, I recommend joining a running or cycling group and to sign up for a race. It will

What is your weekly exercise regimen? I’m currently participating in the FitPass Move Strong program. Our small group training meets Monday - Thursday. Workouts include Kettlebells, TRX Suspension and RIP Trainer, Pilates mat, and Pilates Reformers. I also attend a Pilates Reformers class on Sundays.

How has using a Personal Trainer worked for you? It keeps me accountable and keeps me moving. I really enjoy the variety of the workouts they design. It’s wonderful to have the individual attention to ensure my form is correct and to provide me with any modifications.

What advice can you give others about keeping physically active throughout life? Setting specific goals and being patient with yourself is key to maintaining an active lifestyle. Also, having a workout buddy (or buddies in my case) really helps make even the most challenging workouts fun.

What part of your workout regimen do you DREAD? Running on the track – I don’t like running in circles.

Junk foods you cannot resist: Burritos!

Jewish Rochester in the Summer Wait, no holidays? Whereas during certain times of the year it can seem like there’s a new Jewish holiday every day, in the summer, there are none. From Shavuot in late May until Rosh Hashanah in September, there are no major Jewish holidays or celebrations. But that doesn’t mean vibrant Jewish living stops. The JCC is a great place to be Jewish in the summer! July features our annual Ames Amzalak Rochester International Jewish Film Festival (RJIFF), now in its 15th year. With something for everyone, RJIFF is a great way to connect with Jewish culture and heritage on the big screen. In the Department of Jewish Life and Learning, we are offering a new Moonlight Yoga program for Rosh Chodesh. Come join us in the Downstairs Courtyard by the Yoga Studio as we celebrate the arrival of the new lunar/Jewish months. Has it really been 10 years since Israel disengaged from the Gaza Strip? JCC dedicates new memorial for Rochester Holocaust survivors Hundreds came to honor and remember... Close to 200 people attended an event on April 12, 2015 to honor 286 survivors who settled in Rochester, whose names were permanently engraved on panels that were added to the Holocaust Memorial Garden at the JCC.

There will also be an educational component of this project to be shared with all area school districts to teach future generations about the Holocaust.

“T The True Value of the JCC... A life-long member speaks about five generations of involvement in the JCC community.

he JCC is no small thing to Burt Gordon! "My family has considered the JCC a part of our home for five generations," he explains. "My mother was an ardent member of the volleyball league and swam in the pool almost every day. My father had his weekly massage with 'Red' Shapiro and my children and grandchildren all attended Camp Seneca Lake, most ending up as counselors." Burt proudly adds, "Plus, my greatgranddaughter will be starting daycare at the Wolk Children's Center next month!"

Burt, presently 90 years old, has been a JY/JCC member since the age of 10, when his parents sent him to the Franklin Street JY. “Back then, all the Jewish kids went to the JY. They had a very strong youth program,” Burt recalls. “Nearly all members of the JY were Jewish, so it became a central meeting place for Jews of all ages.” “I’d leave work during my lunch hour to swim laps in the Andrews Street pool. I continued lap swimming at the JCC when it moved to Edgewood Avenue," but as the pool grew to be one of the busiest areas of the JCC, Burt decided to move to the fitness area for his exercise. Now, Burt's weekly ritual includes exercising three times each week using the Cybex Circuit, stationary bike, and doing Pilates

with his personal trainer, Kathy Mulvehill. One of Burt’s beliefs is: “If you make your living in a community, you have a responsibility to give back to that community.” He not only talks the talk, but he walks the walk. Burt and his late wife, Audrey, chaired the JCC Annual Gala many years ago. He served as part of the JCC Board of Directors and has been a supporter of CenterStage, the Jewish Film Festival, and the Jewish Book Festival as well as a longtime member of the Markus Society. Burt looks beyond the actual physical facility when he assesses what he considers the true value of the JCC. “What is important are the relationships and camaraderie that members have with each other here. The JCC should be kept alive and enduring and be a part of both the Jewish and Rochester communities. I wish it well!”
