Dear JCC Members and Friends, It is with sadness and excitement that I write to you. As many of you know, Leslie Berkowitz informed the board of directors at the beginning of the year about her intention to step away from being the executive director at the JCC and begin a new chapter in her life, spending more time with her family and consulting. With deep gratitude for her leadership and vision, the board and I thank Leslie for her 19 years of dedicated service to the JCC. Leslie is a consummate professional, thoughtful, insightful, and a visionary, who has made an indelible mark on our community.

Soon after Leslie notified us, we formed a search committee and conducted an intensive nationwide search for the best candidate. Leslie's leadership paved the way for us to attract high quality Jewish communal leaders. We are fortunate that strong leadership will continue at the JCC with the arrival of Arnie Sohinki. Arnie began his career with his work for the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization and served as the associate director of the JCCs of Greater Los Angeles and the chief executive officer of the JCC of Greater Washington before his leadership experience at the Jewish Community Center Association in New York where he helped community centers around the country bring best practices into action.

Arnie and his wife, Jo, are eager to become a part of our Rochester community. I know Arnie will be glad to meet each of you-so reach out and introduce yourself to him. Jo will be joining Arnie in December as she finishes up her commitment at the Kaplan JCC on the Palisades as the early childhood director. Their son, Rich, lives in New York and is a senior account executive for Brand|Connections. Their other son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Laura, live in Pittsburgh, where Lewis is the director of the day camp and year-round program for the JCC of Greater Pittsburgh. They are the parents to Arnie and Jo’s first grandchild, Charlie, who is 8 months old.

Welcome, Arnie and Jo Sohinki. We are very happy that you have chosen to build a life here in our community and we look forward to your involvement.

Thank you, Leslie for all you have done for the JCC and the Rochester Jewish community. Your legacy will live on with the numerous staff and volunteers who call you their mentor.

In the midst of significant changes, this is an exciting time for the JCC! The current services and programs offered here rival those found at other JCCs throughout North America. My goal is to build on these successes and continue to identify new and innovative programs that meet the needs of our members and the Rochester Jewish and larger community.

My other immediate goals are to continue the momentum in moving the JCC forward with renovations and fundraising, while maximizing programs and services for our members and the community. There are challenges ahead but our opportunities are limitless. I look forward to getting to know each of you and I value hearing your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. I feel lucky to have joined a fantastic team of lay leaders and professional staff within an inspiring and vibrant community. Together, we will make a difference.

Think Aladdin landing on Mars in his magically carpeted futuristic spaceship or Jack growing an organic beanstalk, so he can be a contestant on a cooking competition television show. The sky’s the limit as kids use their powerful imaginations to come up with clever, creative plot twists and compelling characters. We’ll perform our show at 4pm on Friday, Feb 19 for family and friends.
