We are working closely with South African Tourism to grow and sustain our domestic tourism. We are collaborating with members of the tourism trade to create new innovations, new experiences and value for money packages to ensure that tourism is accessible, easy and part of the everyday life for all South Africans. As 2018 marks the MANDELA CENTENARY, we will be promoting travel and tourism through Mandela’s Legacy, by contributing to the South African Tourism’s national initiative called “What’s your 100 Madiba experiences?” This will focus on promoting travel and tourism through Mandela’s legacy. A total of 100 sites across the country and in all nine provinces that relate or connect to Nelson Mandela’s legacy have been identified. These have become “must visit” sites during the course of 2018 both for domestic and international visitors. The next few months will see us collaborating with the Departments of Economic Development Tourism Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) and Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) to implement activities aligned to “Mandela’s KZN Footsteps”. This is aligned to our existing KZN domestic campaign, “Do KZN” which encourages people to explore KZN, encouraging intra-travel and making tourism affordable and accessible.

KwaZulu-Natal will focus on enhancing the tourism offerings at the Nelson Mandela Capture site in Howick. Some of the activities include: The Mandela Day Marathon on August 26, 2018: Thousands of runners from all over the country take part in this great initiative by uMgungundlovu District Municipality which aim to unite people from all walks of life. The journey begins at Manaye Hall in Pietermaritzburg where he made his last speech and ends at capture site. Nelson Mandela Legacy Ride4Hope: Cyclists trace the footsteps of the icon from Vilakazi Street in Soweto, travelling to Standerton, Newcastle, Ladysmith and end at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. During the four-day cycle participants will also take part in community projects in the various towns. Tourism Month: During Tourism Month in September, we will drive a robust marketing campaign to promote all the corners of KZN. This will culminate with the Lilizela Tourism Awards that will reward the best of the best the tourism sector during a prestigious event hosted by the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Sihle Zikalala. Taste the Midlands Food and Wine Festival will take place on 27 September. This family orientated event is a first of its kind, taking place at the Capture site, and will include participation by various stakeholders in the tourism sector in the Midlands Meander, where they will showcase various cuisine and other products found in the charming Midlands Meander. KZN has of course a whole lot more. Follow us on all our social networks, Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), to be updated on all our upcoming events and to drop us a line and tell us about your exceptional holiday in the Zulu Kingdom, and remember to #GottaLuvKZN. Enjoy your Zulu Kingdom experience!

NO DOUBT, THE BEST WAY TO VIEW WHALES AND DOLPHINS UP CLOSE IS FROM A BOAT THE ISLE OF CAPRI CRUISES offers an exhilarating 2 hour cruise into the ocean on their boat “Bafana”, to view one of the world’s most magnificent mammals, the Humpback Whale! The trip takes you into the Indian Ocean and close to the Mozambican current to encounter them at close range. All trips have friendly and fully qualified whale tour guides on board, to share their vast knowledge of the ocean and its creatures with you. Every year, from June to November, whales can frequently be seen off the KwaZulu-Natal coast on their migratory route, from the Southern Oceans to the warmer tropical waters for mating and giving birth, and on their return, heading for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. By law, you are not allowed to approach within 300m from a whale, unless you are aboard a boat permitted by the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Permit holders are all members of the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association and as such are required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to undergo training. The Isle of Capri Cruises boasts one of two whale watching permits awarded in Durban.

We also offer: • Hourly Harbour Cruises from 10am - 4pm (conditions apply) • Sea Cruises at 12.30pm and 2.30pm • Educational School Trips • Boat Rides • Party Cruises • Fishing

Known for its intimate, relaxed atmosphere, the festival is now in its 13th year and is held at White Mountain Lodge near Giant’s Castle in the scenic Central Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal, just 28km off the N3 on tarred roads, 185km from Durban and 400km from Johannesburg.

Aside from the music, festival-goers can look forward to a wide variety of food and drink outlets, colourful arts and crafts, plus loads of outdoor leisure activities for the whole family. Once a year, in the heart of South Africa’s Kingdom of the Zulu, thousands of people make the long journey to one of His Majesty’s, the King of the Zulu nation’s royal residence at KwaNyokeni Palace. Here, in Nongoma, early every September month, young Zulu maidens will take part in a colourful cultural festival, the Royal Reed Dance festival - or Umkhosi woMhlanga in the Zulu language. For visitors to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa’s most popular tourist destination, the Reed Dance festival offers the unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and majesty of the Kingdom of the Zulu, combined with the vibrant spectacle of Zulu cultural life. The road to the Reed Dance festival runs north from the city of Durban, and winds through the green lushness of the North Coast sugar-belt, skirting through the Kingdom’s world-renowed wildlife reserves of Zululand and Maputaland. RITUAL CELEBRATION The Reed Dance is also a celebration of the Zulu nation and performs the essential role of unifying nation and the king, who presides over the ceremony.

THE HILTON ARTS FESTIVAL 14-16 SEPTEMBER 2018 The Hilton Arts Festival is the largest theatrical event of its kind in KwaZulu-Natal. Established in 1993, the Festival aims to bring the pick of South Africa’s high quality performing art to KwaZulu-Natal.

This primary aim is enhanced by all other aspects of the festival: art exhibitions, quality craft, food and drink, live music. It offers the opportunity to showcase the cream of South African theatre and to support South African writing.

Tel: +27 33 383 0126 (Direct) Email: theatre@hiltoncollege.com

The festival takes its name from the riverbed reeds, which are the central focus of this four-day event. The reed-sticks are carried in a procession by thousands of young maidens who are invited to the King’s palace each year. More than 10 000 maidens, from various communities throughout the province of KwaZulu- Natal, take part in the Reed Dance ceremony, with the rest of the Zulu nation helping them to celebrate their preparation for womanhood.

LIONS RIVER CRAFT BREWERY AND BEER GARDEN lrish born, Ronald Mc Clelland has had a lifelong love affair with beer. His father, also Ronald, had a home brew system, and Ronald (Jnr) has travelled the world tasting beers and visiting breweries. He started brewing craft beer as a hobby, using a homemade system, but after locals had tasted it, they demanded that he supply the restaurants and markets around Lions River in the KZN Midlands. ln 2014 Ronald imported a Speidel Braumeister brewery from Germany, and after much research re recipes and hard work re adapting to the bigger system, he has perfected the techniques and his recipes (mainly German). With several custom-made additions to the equipment, to streamline the various processes such as cooling and capturing the rainwater for the beer, he has added to the whole culture of “attention to detail”. Most recently Ronald imported 2 Speidel Brite tanks, an automated bottling and capping unit and an automated keg washing unit. Ronald makes 500 litres of craft beer at a time, and has four fermenting units, where the temperature is controlled according to style, and after approximately 13 days, the craft beer is either bottled or kegged, and then matured under controlled temperatures. Each batch is tested for correctness before being marketed. Opening a Beer Garden has always been a dream of Ronald. With enough nagging from supporters, the beer garden finally opened in May 2018. The Beer Garden is open Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 4:30pm. On offer is: Brewery tours | Craft beer on tap Country platters consisting of a selection of fresh Midlands homemade and homegrown pickles, relishes and cheeses, charcuterie (handcrafted cured meats), artisan breads and farm butter. DURBAN Visitors to Durban get to experience the sights and sounds of this typically African city, a city that abounds with cultural diversity and multi-cultural traditions. From its divided past to its democratic present, Durban offers a wealth of influences to educate, entertain and enthral with museums and heritage centres to traditional dancers, local cuisine and colonial heritage. Walk in the shoes of those who impacted our present through their selfless struggle – learn from the past and embrace the present. This coastal city is that’s blessed with the warm Indian Ocean, glorious beaches extending from Amanzimtoti to Umdloti and a summer that lasts for virtually 12 months of the year. Here visitors are invited to walk the promenade at sunrise, to take the surfing lesson you’ve always wanted, or join the locals at the monthly Salsa dance sessions at the Suncoast Amphitheatre. Enjoy cocktails and live music at a trendy jazz club, pop into a street-side café for a cappuccino or craft beer, or head to a local shebeen for a memorable township experience. Get a taste of Durban’s colonial history with ‘high tea’ at one of the city’s hotels, its Indian heritage with a visit to the Victoria Street Market to stock up on spices and the Markets of Warwick for an African vibe. This is where local traders sell everything from beadwork and traditional art to fresh produce, herbal medicine and traditional cuisine - you must visit the Bovine Head Market… the succulent facial meat is served off the bone with condiments and dumplings. Take a fascinating journey through the past as you visit museums, homes and hideouts of the regions many anti-apartheid activists by following the KwaZulu-Natal Freedom Route, which spans the

cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Visit the KwaMuhle Museum and view Durban through the eyes of African’s who lived and worked here from 1928 to the late 1980s – learn more about labour regulations, separate housing and the subsequent protest action. Or venture into Cato Manor, an informal settlement on the outskirts of the city, and visit the Cato Manor Heritage Centre. Large black and white photographic prints vividly depict the stark realities of evictions, rebellion, riots and suppression. North of Durban in Inanda is where you’ll find Mahatma Gandhi’s Phoenix settlement – a self-reliant community that included a clinic, school, homes and a printing press for his newspaper. There is also the Ohlange Institute, the first educational institute in South Africa founded by a black person - John Dube and his wife Nokutela. It was where President Nelson Mandela chose to cast his vote in the first democratic election in South Africa in 1994.

The Outer West area of the city of Durban extends from Kloof inland and includes the beautiful Valley of 1000 Hills, up the winding and picturesque Botha’s Hill. Botha’s Hill, midway between the beaches of Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial capital Pietermaritzburg, enjoys the most commanding views on the coastal side of the Drakensberg. At about 800m above sea level, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the berg and the ships on the Indian Ocean. Overlooking the world-famous Valley of 1000 Hills with its living Zulu museum and many other cultural and natural attractions, Botha’s Hill is on the route of the Comrades Marathon and Dusi Canoe Race. Named after Carolina Botha who opened the first inn there in 1849 to cater to wagoners, Botha’s Hill has maintained this spirit of hospitality. Comfortable B&B guesthouses in Botha’s Hill also offer self-catering facilities, and there is a well-equipped backpackers’ lodge for the more adventurous. Shongweni Dam, Game Reserve and Polo Grounds are nearby, as are Inanda and Nagle Dams as well as Tala Game Reserve. A word of caution - if you want to stay in Botha’s Hill during the Comrades or Dusi races, book well ahead!

MIDLANDS

The days are getting longer and there is a hint of spring in the air, the forested hills and rolling countryside will soon be tinged with green and dormant bulbs wait patiently to burst forth in a riot of colour. This is a great time of year to enjoy the fascinating mix of arts and crafts, artisanal produce, sublime spas and world-class restaurants – or shake off the winter blues by getting active with one of the many adventurous pursuits on offer in the region.

And speaking of adventure, this area offers a wealth of outdoor adventure activities for visitors to enjoy. From trail running and hiking, to mountain biking, horse riding and paddling – you’ll find your chosen activity here – check out the diary section for a list of MTB and trail events available. The Karkloof Canopy Tour offers adrenalin junkies a rush as you whizz past towering trees, cliff faces dotted with orchids and over a pristine forest floor… and hot-air ballooning enables you to view it all from above. Not wanting to break out a sweat? Then pick up a Midlands Meander map and explore some of the routes offering visitors easy directions to a wealth of fabulous cuisine, historic landmarks and artist studios. There are plenty ‘shop till you drop’ opportunities to take home the perfect handwoven rug, a designer pottery teapot or deliciously creamy Swiss-styled local goats cheese. Kids will love exploring the gardens of Groundcover, painting their own pottery at the Zulu-Lulu Art Bar or feeding the goats at Swissland cheese. Craft beer is a big deal nowadays, and visitors to the Midlands won’t be disappointed with the likes of

KZN’s oldest, the Nottingham Road Brewery to a relatively new kid on the block, the Lion’s River Craft Brewery and Beer Garden. And if beer isn’t your ‘poison’ top up with a dose of caffeine at Terbodore, famous for its Great Dane, Steampunk (where the locals get their fix) or Blueberry Café, where, as the name suggests, the coffee is accompanied by a choice of deliciousness. Walk the gardens as the last of the winter aloes flower make way for banks of azaleas bursting into bloom and the oak trees wear their emerald finery to celebrate spring. Pop into the Pietermaritzburg Garden Show at the Royal Show grounds for extra gardening inspiration. Take some time out and visit the Mandela Capture Site to view the remarkable sculpture that marks the place where former president, Nelson Mandela was captured. Alongside the sculpture is a temporary exhibition telling the story of Nelson Mandela’s journey from comrade, leader, prisoner and negotiator to statesman. Or get your running gear on for the Mandela Day Marathon on the 25/26 August – there is trail running and MTB event too.

NORTH COAST The KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, is a treasure trove of history and culture, richly imprinted with Zulu, European and Indian influences. Its unspoilt natural environment, lush tropical coastline and warm waters have attracted a unique mix of luxury resorts and affordable holiday accommodation, allowing its guests to keep in touch with nature, while enjoying the degree of luxury they deserve. The warm Indian Ocean plays host to the common bottlenose dolphin which can often be seen frolicking in the waves from many of the secluded bays and golden beaches. The patches of natural coastal forest give way to endlessly rolling hills covered with sugarcane – testament to the importance of South Africa’s first commercially grown sugarcane crop. The Morewood Memorial Gardens in Verulam mark the contribution of Edmund Morewood to the establishment of Kwazulu-Natal’s very important sugar industry. In 1848 Morewood planted sugarcane on his farm in Compensation which had arrived by vessel from Mauritius the previous year. There were six acres of cane growing by 1850 and, by the end of January 1852, he was able to walk into the offices of the Natal Times newspaper with a sample of sugar made on his farm. It is said that he used a section of yellowwood tree covered with tin, like an outsized kitchen grater, and that the cane juice was boiled in a large iron pot. This region is also home to a large Indian community, so look out for their temples, sample their spicy foodstuffs or shop for fresh produce at any of the numerous markets. The town of KwaDukuza is the home to King Shaka Gravesite and Memorial and The King Shaka Cultural

Heritage Tourism Trail, in honour of the heritage that King Shaka left behind - also known as the “Gateway to the Zulu Kingdom” of KwaZuluNatal. KwaDukuza also boasts to be the home of the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Chief Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli – his home, now the Luthuli Museum, has been declared a National Monument. Set in his former home, the museum features numerous photographic records, many significant belongings and a life-sized bust of the man himself. A short drive takes you to Chief Luthuli’s Grave as well as the Church in which Chief Albert Luthuli’s body laid in state. In addition to history and heritage, this region abounds with fabulous beaches, the warm Indian Ocean and a wide variety of outdoor activities ranging from horse riding and hiking, surfing and fishing, to mountain biking and micro-lighting. August is Strawberry Festival time so be sure to stock up on some fruity deliciousness, or at least feast on fabulous local fare at one of the local markets. Golfers will appreciate the North Coast’s excellent golf courses - from the sweeping fairways of Umhlali’s golf course to the internationally-designed and challenging Zimbali Golf Course, with its narrow fairways and numerous bunkers.

DID YOU KNOW? The garden strawberry was first bred in France in the 1750s via a cross of two wild strawberry species, one from North America, the other from Chile. The French however had been taking wild strawberry plants from the forests to plant in their gardens for centuries – French king, Charles V, had 1,200 strawberry plants in his royal garden between 1364 and 1380.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG Named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people and ‘The Dragon Mountain’ by the Dutch Voortrekkers, the awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains with their massive cliffs, that tower over riverine bush, lush yellowwood forests and cascading waterfalls, form an enormous barrier separating KwaZuluNatal from the Kingdom of Lesotho. In combining sheer natural beauty with a wealth of biological diversity, this 243 000 hectare mountainous region known the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site. On 30 November 2000, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park was added to the World Heritage Site list, and is described by UNESCO as having “exceptional natural beauty in its soaring basaltic buttresses, incisive dramatic cutbacks, and golden sandstone ramparts...” The Park is an important haven for many threatened and endemic species, and for its wealth of rock paintings made by the San people over a period of 4000 years. The Bushman or San paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures and have been recorded at 500 different cave and overhang sites between Royal National Park in the north and Bushman’s Nek in the south. This region attracts nature lovers, hikers, adventurers and mountaineers alike, all wanting to set their foot on the mountain, conquer its challenges, revel in its beauty and admire the awesome views from its lofty peaks. In the spring the upper reaches of the escarpment may still be covered in snow, whilst the lower regions will be showing their colours as the planes and oaks come into leaf, the peach trees come into bloom and the bulbs break through the earth. Take to the air and experience nature’s

wonderland from a different viewpoint with a scenic flight over the escarpment… or experience the awesome thrill and peaceful serenity of hot air ballooning. Or pop into the Drakensberg Brewery near Cathkin Park for a pint of Amphitheatre Red Ale or Giant’s Castle Stout – 10c of every beer sold goes to local vulture conservation. Experience the spectacular Sani Pass mountain road, once a rough mule trail descending the Eastern Highlands of Basotholand into Natal, now the well-known entry point into Lesotho from the Drakensberg. It is the only border post between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho and offers spectacular scenery, breathtaking drop-offs and frozen waterfalls en-route to the mountains of Northern Lesotho – it is strictly 4X4 only and care must be taken as the roads can still be rather icy. Keep a look out for herds of eland, mountain reedbuck, klipspringer and chacma baboons who frequent the lower slopes, and gaze upwards for a possible glimpse of a Lammergeier (bearded vulture) or endangered Cape vulture soaring above the peaks. Stop in at Sani Top chalet, the ‘highest pub in Africa’ for some hot soup, or a local Maloti beer!

DID YOU KNOW? The Basutho pony, a regular sight in the mountainous regions of Lesotho and Sani Pass, can be traced back to the Cape horse. These horses are often the only means of transport in rural areas, but are also used by tourists for trekking through these mountains – a valuable source of income for local communities.

SOUTH COAST There’s no doubt about it - visitors are spoilt for choice with what to do along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, with its subtropical forests, blue lagoons, golden beaches, rocky coves, the warm Indian Ocean and sunny weather – this is what makes the South Coast such a popular destination. But have you ever wondered what lies beyond the beach? There’s a world of colourful rural scenes, authentic cultural experiences and a tavern or two along the way. Daily life flows at its own pace in this tranquil hinterland, where people and their stories provide the intermittent bursts of brightness, vibrancy and interest. Listen with interest as a local guide unlocks the secrets of the landscape and its inhabitants through a local guide and gain insight into the rich Zulu culture, its ceremonies and beliefs and even pick up a phrase or two in Zulu. But don’t expect to do typical. Rather do it your and their way combined as a great authentic cultural exchange –Zulu dancing, beading workshops, drumming demonstrations, sangoma readings, storytelling for the kids, traditional food and drink, refreshing stops at taverns, hikes up holy mountains, San cave paintings, shopping for handmade arts and crafts, overnighting in rural accommodation, scenic special events or picnics at waterfalls, where you’ll discover a different beach altogether. There are so many options there for you to explore and enjoy. These ‘Great Drives Out’ rural adventure experiences encourage responsible and authentic culture and heritage explorations in scenic environments, fostering links between diverse

cultures, and between the popular KZN South Coast coastline and the lush hinterland, only a few minutes’ drive away. Another great way to experience this is on the back of a motorbike! The 3-day Matat2Pont enduro and adventure ride takes riders from the mountainous region of Matatiele to the lush coastal forests of Port Edward (21-23 September). Each year this event supports S.H.O.E.S (Sportsmen Helping Others Enjoy Shoes) and this year is aiming to collect 1,000 pairs for those less fortunate in rural areas – drop off point is the Bike Shack in Pinetown. Other ‘beyond the beach’ activities include visits to crocodile farms, banana plantations and candle factories, or shop for handmade crafts and local produce… from macadamia nuts from a farm stall to the strong aroma of freshly ground coffee – locally grown, harvested and processed at the Beaver Creek Coffee Estate. The adventurous will enjoy the varying degrees of thrills available at the Oribi Gorge… from mountain biking and hiking, to suspension bridges, the gorge swing - the world’s highest abseiling site and, in the rainy season (November to April), white-water rafting.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast is surely one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas. Explore the dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, marvel at the lush ferns and wild orchids, the wild date and lala palms dotting the landscape and the swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery. Hike up mountainous sand dunes, through thick coastal forest, onto pristine beaches and the warm Indian Ocean. With this variety in habitats, it is little wonder that this region offers some of South Africa’s finest game viewing and bird watching. The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (declared South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999), boasts more than 420 recorded bird species and is renowned for its game-viewing hides, pans and the guided ‘fig forest walk’. Looking east from the village of Mkuze is Ghost Mountain - two pronounced features rise out of the Ubombo mountain range, together resembling the figure of a woman on her back, her head on the right is Tshaneni and her knees on the left, is Gaza. From early times it had become customary to bury the bodies of Chiefs on Ghost Mountain. High on its slopes is a taboo cave that has been used as a tomb by generations of the Gaza family. Soshongane and his descendants, although they lived many miles away in Mozambique, were carried back to the Ghost Mountain when they died – in 1819, after being conquered by Shaka, Soshongane and his followers fled their ancestral home into Mozambique, where he founded the Shangaan tribe. Ghost Mountain is said to be haunted and weird noises and flickering fires have been reported at irregular intervals over the years. The eastern shores region of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is home to a huge diversity fauna and flora as a result of its different ecosystems – ranging from coral reefs and sandy beaches to subtropical dune forests, savannas and wetlands.

A variety of animals found in the Park include elephants, black and white rhino and buffalo, as well as large numbers of Nile crocodiles and hippo. Whales, dolphins and marine turtles, leatherback and loggerhead, as well as the occasional whale shark are found in the ocean. Boat based whale watching is a highlight during the winter months as whales pass along the KZN coast on a migration route between their summer polar feeding grounds in the Antarctic, to the tropical and sub-tropical coastal waters of Northern Mozambique and Madagascar where they breed in the winter. A highlight is surely the iSimangaliso MTB Adventure Tour, a ‘Limited Edition’ event taking place from 6-9 September 2018 - where 100 riders will have the experience and privilege of riding through this outstanding UNESCO World Heritage Site. They will be led by riders who have extensive bush knowledge, allowing participants to truly appreciate the conservation values, ecosystems and biodiversity of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. And like all the other iSimangaliso Eco-series events, it aims at raising awareness and funds towards the protection of rare and endangered species within this World Heritage Site. It will enable riders to experience the world heritage values for which iSimangaliso was inscribed - biodiversity, interlinking ecosystems and sense of place – using existing management tracks, animal paths, jeep tracks and secondary gravel roads.

DID YOU KNOW? The iSimangaliso Wetland Park recently donated 30 of its uMkhuze elephant population to Zinave National Park situated in the Mozambique component of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area. This was the largest single translocation of its kind in the Park and is a great solution to alleviating the pressures associated with growing elephant numbers in South Africa.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

ZULULAND The Zululand region lies north of the Thukela River and extends to the subtropical northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. It is an area of breathtaking hills and valleys dotted with traditional tribal villages and quaint towns – where the warm waters of the Indian Ocean gently caress its golden shores. Whether you soak up the sun along the coastline or head inland for a more traditional experience, Zululand is where you’ll experience warm hearted Zulu hospitality. A celebrated event in the Zulu calendar is the Zulu King’s Reed Dance, the uMkhosi woMhlanga, a traditional ceremony of maidens held annually in September. Maidens from all over the province and from as far afield as the Kingdom of Swaziland flock to the eNyokeni Royal Palace to participate in the traditional dance of the maidens. The girls converge in groups from the Zululand regions to the Kings Palace the day before the ceremony. The main attraction of the ceremony is the presentation of reeds to the King. Each maiden is to carry a reed from the river and present it to the King in a spectacular procession at the Palace. Zululand offers opportunities for an authentic insight into the contemporary cultural lifestyle of the average rural Zulu person, to experience village life as happens – a vibrant living culture. For a glimpse into the history of the region, pop into the Fort Nongqavi Museum in Eshowe, the oldest town of European settlement in Zululand. The museum depicts the history of Zululand from the early Iron Age and focuses on the fascinating

cross-cultural influences of the past 200 years. For a more hands-on experience, take a guided tour into rural Zululand where you’ll meet ordinary Zulu people in the countryside and townships – where your Zulu guide will explain the traditions and cultural beliefs of sangomas and nyangas, and introduce you to local beaders and potters. Also in Eshowe is the Dlinza Forest, visited by birdwatchers from all over the world hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the many bird species to be found there. The 125-metre Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk, at an elevation of 10 metres, allows visitors to walk right under the canopy of Dlinza’s indigenous scarp forest and culminates in a 20-metre observation tower with a breathtaking view. Craft beer enthusiasts will appreciate a tasting experience at the home of the famed ‘Zulu Blonde’ – the Zululand Brewery. With some luck, brew master Richard Chennels may be on hand to give you inside information on this award winning local brew.

DID YOU KNOW? The Vukani Zulu Cultural Museum in Eshowe houses some of the best Zulu arts and crafts collected over the years, with several of the artists receiving international recognition for their work. The Vukani Association was formed more than 30 years ago in an attempt to revive the then-dying art of basketry - this inherited knowledge of grasses, palm leaves, natural dyes, beadwork, woodcarving and ceramics has created a new market for the crafters of Zululand who now produce a range of contemporary items with a traditional theme.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

BATTLEFIELDS

The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Route boasts the largest concentration of significant battles and war related sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance. But if it’s more than history you’re looking for, the Battlefields region does not disappoint – there are a number of activities to keep the adventure junkie happy, from white-water rafting down the mighty Thukela, to some serious mountain biking and 4x4 trails. Besides taking an organized tour, there are several self-drive routes that enable you to visit these historic towns and sites. Knowledgeable, friendly and accredited local guides are available and guarantee hour upon hour of captivating company. The King Shaka’s Way Route takes visitors from the coastal region of Stanger, through Eshowe, Melmoth and on to Ulundi and offers world-class game reserves, heritage sites and Zulu culture and tradition. The Remembrance Route begins from Pietermaritzburg through Greytown, Tugela Ferry, and Dundee and onto the Ithala Game Reserve whilst the Rifleman’s Road Route starts from Volkrust in the northwest, down through Newcastle, Dundee, Ladysmith, Colenso and Escourt. Visitors will encounter fabulous scenery, generous hospitality, and tales of great courage and endurance. The Siege Salute Route has a high concentration of historical sites encompassing Anglo-Boer War and several Voortrekker- Zulu War sites. Major towns along the route are Ladysmith, Colenso, Escourt and Winterton. This route is abundant with beautiful landscapes, wildlife, birdlife and adventures. From Ulundi through to Vryheid, on to Paulpietersburg

and Ithala Game Reserve the Warrior’s Trek Route offers stunning scenery, warm mineral fountains, battlefields, game viewing and culture galore – visit the Ncome Museum, dedicated to fallen Zulu warriors and to Zulu culture. Dundee is the centre of the Red Soldiers Route, and the impressive Talana Museum, set in a 20 acre heritage park, on the outskirts of the town depicts the varied history of the region. Battle sites on this route include the Isandlwana and Fugitives drift. Traditional beer brewing has been part of the Zulu culture for hundreds of years and still forms part of their heritage today. Visit the United National Sorghum Breweries (UN Breweries) in Dundee, part of the KZN Brew Route, and be introduced to the industrial brewing and bottling of traditional Zulu beer. Here Zulu beer brewing is carried out to produce iJuba, meaning ‘Dove’ in Zulu, which is considered by some to be a national drink. Visits to the surrounding settlements can be arranged via the brewery and guests can experience traditional beer drinking first hand. The customers normally buy 20lt barrels from their small, local shops and then dispense the beer to the whole family.

DID YOU KNOW? Beer is central to the social culture of the Zulu’s. Traditional beer is made from sorghum and is brewed by women. It is brewed in a special hut that is not completely thatched so smoke can escape and the beer gets enough oxygen to ferment. Traditionally Zulu beer is served in a clay pot (uKhamba).
