CANSA is committed to connecting people facing cancer with information, day-to-day help as well as emotional support they need in the communities where they live. Our aim is to ensure that cancer Survivors and their loved ones don’t have to face cancer alone; we’re here to support them through every step of their cancer journey.* Your support helps us to continue the fight against cancer in South Africa and brings us closer to the challenge of a cancer-free society within our generation. Let this become our legacy to our children and generations to come. Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) number – Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA): 130001397 Non Profit Organisation Registration number – Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA): 000-524 NPO A bone mineral density test, sometimes just called a bone density test, detects whether you have osteoporosis, a word that comes from Greek and literally means “porous bone.” When you have this condition, your bones get weak and thin. They become more likely to break. It’s a silent condition, which means you don’t feel any symptoms. Without a bone density test, you may not realize you have osteoporosis until you break a bone. Substantial support for breast cancer awareness and research funding has helped create advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Breast cancer survival rates have increased, and the number of deaths associated with this disease is steadily declining, largely due to factors such as earlier detection, a new personalized approach to treatment and a better understanding of the disease. A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast. Doctors use a mammogram to look for early signs of breast cancer. Regular mammograms are the best tests doctors have to find breast cancer early, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt. Berea & Durban North | 7

GLENWOOD / BEREA

Glenwood Berea

The Berea was named by the missionary, Capt. Allen Gardiner in 1835. It later expanded to become one of Durban’s most popular residential areas and assigned distinctive names for its various suburbs, e.g. Stamford Hill, Toll Gate, Stellawood, Morningside, Glenwood and Montpelier. In the early days residents of Durban, to avoid the heat and dust of the town centre, moved out to the suburbs. The Berea was popular as living conditions were more pleasant on the ridge, with spectacular views of Durban. The gentry of Durban built their homes on the Berea in scenic surroundings with orchards, paddocks and fields. Ridge Road and Musgrave Road were among the first to be established. Today busy shopping centres, hospitals and schools, blocks of flats, and homes on smaller stands, have to a large extent changed the character of the once rural suburb. Some of the gracious mansions from this bygone era remain, and a number have been converted to business premises.

Durban North Just 15 minutes north of the city of Durban on the northern side of the Umgeni River Mouth, is the upmarket suburb of Durban North. Most of this beautiful area was once a coastal dune forest system and there are still parts of it preserved in the Mangrove Swamps, and the Umgeni Bird Park bears testimony to the number of birds attracted to the area. Residents and visitors enjoy a scenic setting with an abundance of trees and shrubs and of course views of the Indian Ocean or Umgeni River.

Durban North is located close to major sporting venues including Moses Mabhida stadium, Kings Park Rugby stadium and Kings Park olympic swimming pool. Excellent golf courses in the area are Beachwood, Windsor Park and the Durban Country Club which often hosts the SA Open. There is an abundance of accommodation to suit every need, including luxurious guesthouses, comfortable B&B, hotels and well-appointed self-catering cottages. A large selection of schools are available in the area a well as great shopping centres and small speciality boutiques.

EDUCATION HELLO FROM ANT BOOKS IN GLENWOOD! Many of you will know me as ‘The Ant Lady’, who has visited your school with my wide range of English, maths and Afrikaans books. I am proud to announce that ANT BOOKS turned 20 this year. I used to run a tutoring centre in Pietermaritzburg, and three years ago I opened the ANT BOOKS EDUCATION CENTRE in Glenwood to offer private tutoring to the local children here. This is my way of making a difference in my community. MY MESSAGE TO SCHOOLS AND PARENTS IS THIS: If you have children who are battling, or have fallen behind and need help in catching up, bring them to me. I will conduct an academic assessment which is key to placing them correctly from the start onto my programmes. Children then come for an hour a week per subject and receive personal tuition from my dedicated staff of tutors. And parents: our prices are the best in the business! Lessons are conducted every afternoon and on Saturday mornings. I am personally involved not only in the formulation of each programme based on the assessment, but in the lessons themselves: I liaise constantly with my tutors to ensure each child is getting the best from his or her

St Thomas Home for Children – A registered Child and Youth Care Centre – Residential Care and Personal Development of abandoned, orphaned and vulnerable Children. St Thomas Home for Children was established in 1959 and today is a recognized Child and Youth Care Centre and a registered Not-for-Profit Organisation in the city of Durban, EThekwini Municipality, Province of KwaZuluNatal, South Africa.

#HELP REPAIR ST THOMAS HOME FOR CHILDREN IN DURBAN! St Thomas Home has been on a drive to upgrade its facilities at 5 Williamson Place in Sydenham. Environmental Health and Safety for all children in our care is non-negotiable, our Children are our Number One Priority. We thank the Victor Daitz Foundation for setting the ball rolling with their wonderful donation of R1.2 million to replace our asbestos roof. The Foundation also helped us with the relocation of the Home due to the health dangers of asbestos for children. We were most fortunate to find alternate premises in Sydenham and the children are all settled and safe. Unfortunately while this asbestos roof replacement project was underway we were hit by the cyclone storm in April this year. We give thanks that our children did not have to experience this trauma. The storm wreaked havoc to the premises with mass destruction of the wooden flooring and doors in the children’s dormitories,

flooring in bathrooms and damage to the mechanism in the special cold room for safe food storage. The insurance has only covered one-fifth of the total costs as our buildings are over 60 years and in need of repair. The immediate repairs cost stands at R1.1 million. We have received funding from the Department of Social Development and a generous South Africans. There is however a short fall of R460 000.00 and we appealing to all South Africans to assist us. You are free to call the Manager and Social Worker Marie-Therese Naidoo on 0713820458 or 031-2087964 or principal@stthomas.org.za IF YOU WISH TO MAKE A CASH DONATION: Banking Details : Account Name ( St Thomas Home For Children) Account Number (052598985) Branch Code (043826) Bank (Standard Bank) Swift Code: SBZAZAJJ

ANIMAL CHARITIES

PAW PRINTS RESCUE AND REHOMING’s main focus is on the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of puppies. Over the last 5 years they have rehomed around 600 pups and dogs. They have been fostering for years, and take care of all the pups at home in Westville. They ensure all pups are vaccinated at 6 weeks or before they are homed, and they will never leave foster care unless they are healthy and ready for their new family. Older dogs are also all sterilized and vaccinated before being homed. The adoption fee now includes Microchipping and a sterilization fee. Like most rescue organisations they rely on fund raising and donations from supporters and are constantly finding creative ways to raise money. If you are looking to adopt a pup or pooch, please feel free to look them up on Facebook. SA ANIMAL LIFE LINE was founded by Prishani Pillay who has an unconditional love for animals, treating animals not just as pets but as family. SA Animal Life Line was started when they took in our first rescue kitten that had been abandoned by his mother and once she saw the need to help the voiceless animals that are abandoned and abused she could not stop and decided to start the NPO to help these animals by fundraising to get them to a vet and find them a forever home. At SA Animal Life Line they rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals and fundraising plays a huge part in this. The fundraising allows them to have the animals checked by a vet. Check out the website is www.sall.org.za. If there is any person who is willing to donate to this worthy cause, no matter how small, it will be greatly appreciated.
