Clermont was a black middle income township during the apartheid days, surrounded by Westville, Kloof, New Germany and Inanda in the distance. The main road is called Clermont road and was named after Sir Clermont, a farmer in the area who sold his land. It was the only place Tourism Development in Durban where black people were able to buy property and build houses. Since the end of apartheid Clermont has become a sprawling township as people from the rural areas came to seek work opportunities in the nearby suburbs of Westville and New Germany, Pinetown and Durban. Clermont has a large Anglican, Catholic and Wesleyan community and on Sundays one can see the women of each denomination wearing their church uniforms with pride.

This township originated in 1845 when the British occupied Natal in force and established a number of native locations for the Zulus. It is a fine venue for anyone interested in experiencing township life, and offers shebeens, domestic lifestyles, nyanga’s shops, artwork and jazz . The township is what South Africa is, it is the pulse, the heart beat of the country, the country that was built on the backs of the people. Umlazi is representative of this. Originally discovered by King Shaka and his men and named Umlazi because when Shaka tasted the water it was um lasa (like sour milk).

SHOPPING A fragrant Eastern treasure trove, THE Spice Emporium lives up to its name. The shelves are jam-packed with exotic spices and blends, as well as all the trappings for authentic Indian cooking, such as dhal, linen bags of rice, beans nuts, seeds, poppadums, oils, pickles, paneer and ghee. There is nothing quite like the whiffs of cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, tumeric and black pepper when you enter this shop. Look out for lumps of black sugar that looks like something out of a stone scratch patch, the traditional Indian wooden ice cream churners, and bags of candy-coated fennel. On your way out, be sure to get some sabja seeds to soak in ice-cold milk and flavour with sweet rose syrup to make a delicious Bombay crush.

Tel: 031-312 9135 JOOP’S PLACE Situated a little off the beaten track in Durban’s trendy Morningside, this bistro style steak restaurant is a well known haven for those who love steak, but hate steakhouses. Established in 1993 by ex Capetonians Joop and Wendy Mol, the ambience is warm and welcoming. The music is strictly background to encourage conversation, while most of the noise comes from the open plan kitchen where Joop cooks all the meat, creating huge flames as he prepares his special dishes such as Joop’s Special, a centre cut of super grade fillet, stuffed with pineapple and cheddar cheese, cooked to crisp perfection, finished with button mushrooms and flambéed with brandy.

Intaba View is located in the majestic Valley of 1000 Hills. With a panoramic view of this magnificent valley, dining is available on our outdoor deck as well as on our wraparound patio. The interior of our restaurant is classically styled and a large fireplace guarantees warmth on the coldest of days. Our extensive a la carte menu is available every day and our Buffet on a Sunday is a must for family celebrations. Intaba View – an experience of beauty.
