Serving as a sanctuary for political activists during the apartheid era, the Catholic Church was built in 1938 after the Lutherans had invited the Roman Catholics to start a Mission in Clermont. Founded in 1858, the Lutheran Mission Station of Christiananburg is one of the oldest places of worship in Clermont. Every year, some 3 million people gather on pilgrimage at St John’s Apostolic Church – also known as KwaMasango. Clermont is also the birthplace of the Shembe religion, being the site of Isiah Shembe’s residence and temple before he moved to the Inanda Area.

An important site in the struggle for justice, peace and equality in South Africa, the Phoenix Settlement (073 055 5860) was founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904. It is also where the country’s first Indian newspaper, the ‘Indian Opinion’, was printed until its closure in 1961.
