WELCOME TO KWAZULU-NATAL SOUTH AFRICA The east3Route initiative is important for many reasons. South Africa, as the main trading partner to Mozambique, Swaziland and one of the main trading partners of the Seychelles, is acutely aware of the need to further bolster the strong economic bonds that already exist between this quadruple alliance of countries. We are fortunate that each of the east3ROUTE member nations are uniquely positioned to offer the regional and international investor community attractive investment possibilities. Mozambique is South Africa’s second largest export market with trade having increased dramatically over the past five years. A significant portion of Mozambique’s economic growth is driven by capital-intensive export sectors and foreign investment projects in the mining sector and aluminium smelters, which have also led to growth in the services and construction sectors. Swaziland’s largest trading partner is South Africa, from which it receives more than 90% of its imports and to which it sends 60% of its exports. Other key sectors that drive the economy of Swaziland are textiles and apparel as well as food and beverage. The main exportable commodities are soft drink concentrates, sugar, wood pulp, cotton yarn, refrigerators, citrus and canned fruit. Swaziland imports motor vehicles, machinery, transport equipment, foodstuffs, petroleum products and chemicals. The economic makeup of Seychelles is reportedly 2% agricultural, 18.7% industrial and 79.4% services. The country’s main trading partners are Saudi Arabia (24%), Spain (12.1%) and France (5.9%), with South Africa positioning
itself as the fifth largest source market for the Seychellois’ import demand. Seychelles is one of the most successful African stories, with an unemployment rate of 2%. The main economic sector in Seychelles is tourism. While in other parts of the world investment promotion is focused on inward investment, South African companies focus on outward investments on the African continent. KwaZulu-Natal is a major role player in both manufacturing, transport and logistics sectors in South Africa, with world class infrastructure that supports export led companies. The province enjoys the strategic competitive advantage of being a global gateway for trade into Southern Africa and the world. Its strategic location and highly developed industrial sector ensures a competitive advantage for investors and exporters alike.
MICHAEL MABUYAKHULU KWAZULU-NATAL MEC FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS
KwaZulu-Natal’s manufacturing sector is the second largest in the country, making the region an ideal destination to locate manufacturing businesses, whilst enjoying government incentives and support from the well-established sector. The success of this tourism and trade corridor for KwaZulu-Natal, Mozambique, Swaziland and Mozambique has to be sustained through positioning it as a continuous commitment that would be celebrated annually. There will be stock taking on the progress made and challenges experienced in the process of achieving real regional integration. Its success will be mainly reflected in the growth in the tourism spend and allied investments accrued – which should feature international visitors and investors.

KwaZulu-Natal
Visitors are welcomed into the heart of Zulu villages to experience the culture, consult with a sangoma or watch a rural wedding ceremony and experience Zulu hospitality. African art and crafts, ranging from basket weaving and beadwork to pottery, can be viewed at either dedicated craft centres or at roadside markets.
Zululand
KwaZulu-Natal
Places of cultural interest to visit include the ZULULAND BATTLEFIELD SITES, FORT NONGQAYI, KING CETSHWAYO’S MEMORIAL and the EMAKHOSINI CULURAL HERITAGE PARK where the legendary ‘Valley of the Kings’ is located. Zululand is also known as the birthplace of African game conservation and led the way in the fight to preserve our wildlife heritage, a fight that continues today with the danger posed to our Rhino population by poachers.
THE LANGUAGE OF THE BEADS The earliest Zulu beads were made of organic materials such as seeds and seashells or ivory. They were coloured with dyes made from fruit, roots or mud. Through the ages, in addition to being objects of adornment, the most important aspect of Zulu beadwork was the message carried by these works of art. The colours all have different meanings. White is associated with purity, pink with poverty,
blue with loneliness and green with pining. Zulu maidens would send long involved messages to their loved ones, weaving thoughts of love, grief or jealousy, poverty or uncertainty into their intricately patterned creations. Zululand has much to offer the visitor, from comfortable accommodation in major towns to numerous Big Five game reserves that offer luxury lodges, bush camps or tented campsites as well as game-watching facilities and hiking and nature trails. If however you are looking for a ‘different experience’ there is accommodation available in rugged rock chalets or traditional Zulu huts. RHINO ORPHANAGE: A refuge where wounded and orphan rhinos from poaching are welcomed and cared for by a dedicated team with the purpose of rehabilitating the orphans into the wild. Security has become a major issue and the need to increase the safekeeping of our rhinos, anti-poaching training of our guards is one of our priorities at THULA THULA, to improve the much needed protection of our rhinos.
THULA THULA ELEPHANT AND RHINO EXPANSION PROJECT: a community project for the necessary extension of habitat for our elephants, but also for our orphan rhinos, which will be released, once rehabilitated from our orphanage. Our wildlife population is increasing tremendously due to the fact that no culling or hunting is taking place at Thula Thula. These community projects not only support our wildlife, but also improve employment and education in the local communities.

There are several other sacred, ancient places in the valley such as Nobamba, the homestead of Shaka’s grandfather Jama, which is also referred to as “the most sacred site” and “the place of unity and strength”. ZULULAND’S HERITAGE ROUTE 66 Zululand’s Route 66 between GINGINDLOVU and UPHONGOLO - follows one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand. Settlers set off in ox wagons on well-worn tracks and crossed into Zululand at a drift over the Thukela River. They carried produce like cotton and lambswool blankets, calico cloth, brass and copper wire, and coloured glass beads. During their trips traders hunted and bartered and on their return journey, and they would return to Port Natal with wagons filled with ivory, buffalo and wildebeest skins, rhino horn, hippo teeth and hippo fat. The wagon tracks have long since made way for a modern infrastructure but today’s visitors can still get a sense of how things used to be on Route 66. Visit the website www.zululandroute66.co.za THE ZULULAND BIRDING ROUTE The route has a spectacular 605 bird species and is a treasure trove of specials such as Green Barbet, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Pink-Throated Twinspot, Neergard’s Sunbird and Palmnut Vulture. The Zululand Birding Route is a conservation programme, proving that birding can generate income for local communities - in this way, birding tourism adds real value to wild birds and habitats in which they occur; it provides a tangible reason to conserve natural habitats and the birds that occur in them. ROUTE 66 - Zululand Heritage Route
A journey along Route 66 is filled with unexpected discoveries. Stop at a tavern for refreshment and get knocked out by boxing legend Tap Tap Makhatini, walk in the forest and find fascinating creatures great and small - and take time to hear the extraordinary history of the region: the Zulu kings who lived here, the Norwegian missionaries who brought Christianity to Zululand and how the British tried to change the old order of Zululand. Zululand Heritage Route 66 – follows the road between Gingindlovu and Pongola via Eshowe, Melmoth, Ulundi and Nongoma. This is one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand. Settlers resident at Port Natal (Durban) in the early 19th Century would set off in ox wagons on well-worn tracks and cross into Zululand at a drift very close to the present N2 bridge over the Thukela River. The tracks followed the coast for a while before turning inland towards the heart of the Zulu Kingdom as settlers required the permission of the Zulu King before they could hunt and trade in his territory. The R66, begins at Dokodweni Toll Plaza close to the pristine Siyaya Coastal Park in Mtunzini, and ends less than 250kms further north at the busy town of Pongola but in that short distance, visitors have traveled through the picturesque towns of Eshowe, Melmoth and Ulundi, a world from another time. The Zululand Heritage Route passes through territory that has given rise to events which have captured the world’s imagination. The rise of Shaka and the battles of the Anglo-Zulu War have inspired novels, television epics and movies and today the scale and uniqueness of the annual Royal Reed Dance held each year in Nongoma draws considerable international attention. WELCOME TO SWAZILAND HON JABULANE MABUZA (MP) MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS SWAZILAND
Swaziland has set itself a target, to attain a first world status by 2022. Tourism is one of the sectors that have been identified to have the potential to ensure that Swaziland meets that target by 2022. To achieve that, we need to work together as a region to ensure that our countries, through tourism and investment promotions, create sustainable jobs for our communities. I am happy that this initiative has grown from strength to strength since it was launched in 2011, it is now a recognized brand within the region and internationally. Such initiatives, if supported fully, will ensure that our countries will yield the desired results, that of sustainable jobs for our communities and thus meeting one of the MDS. Swaziland is looking forward to welcoming all E3R delegates to the Kingdom Swaziland.

to get a better idea of traditional African culture. The most important of these is the sacred NCWALA or FESTIVAL OF THE FIRST FRUITS held annually in December /January on a date chosen by astrologers in conjunction with the phases of the moon and sun. This ritual is held to renew the strength of the King and the Swazi Nation for the coming year. THE UMHLANGA OR REED DANCE takes place during August or early September. Swazi maidens, of marriageable age, gather at the Queen Mother’s residence and set out in parties to gather reeds. The reeds are used to repair the windbreak around the Queen Mothers residence. The singing and rhythmic dancing takes place on the afternoon of the sixth and seventh days at the Royal Village. SIBHACA dancing is known for its stirring rhythms, energetic and dramatic movements and bright colours. There are a number of casinos across the country, nightclubs in the more populous areas, and many hotels also have evening entertainment on offer. Accommodation ranges from upmarket and luxury hotels and lodges to bush camps, charming guest houses and bed & breakfasts, self-catering establishments or camping sites and backpackers.

THE SWAZILAND NATIONAL TRUST COMMISSION is the parastatal organisation responsible for the conservation of nature and the cultural heritage of the Kingdom of Swaziland. The offices are near the Parliament building. The activities carried out by the Swaziland National Trust Commission with regard to the countryís cultural heritage include the operation of the national museum, as well as national monuments, which include the KING SOBUZA II MEMORIAL PARK. Archaeology also falls under the Trust; the archaeology department, in the past, has been responsible for excavations at various locations in the country. Adjoining the offices is the NATIONAL MUSEUM which traces stepby-step the history, art and cultural artifacts of the Swazi people. Also at Lobamba is the EMBO STATE PALACE, generally used to meet visiting dignitaries. Only authorised persons may approach or photograph it. THE SOMHLOLO STADIUM at Lobamba is used for soccer matches and concerts as well as for the annual Independence celebration of the colourful Reed Dance ceremony held in late August / early September every year.
The striking Nyonyane Mountain with its exposed granite peak known as the EXECUTION ROCK is in, and is accessed through MLILWANE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY. With its peak at 1110m, Nyonyane is where ancient Bushmen once lived and where Swazi Royal graves are situated giving historical significance. Ancient stories are often told how this magnificent peak acquired its name. Swaziís suspected of witchcraft or criminals were forced to walk off the edge at spearpoint for their crimes. The distinctive twin-peaks, SHEBA’S BREASTS, are clearly visible from the Malagwane Hill as the traveller descends from Mbabane into the Ezulwini Valley. The rock formations are named after the legendary beauty and mysterious Queen of Sheba from Ethiopia, who supposedly seduced King Solomon. The author J. Rider Haggard, was inspired by the peaks and it is believed that he wrote his famous ‘King Solomon’s Mines’ while staying at the private Kapola Estate. His lesser-known novel ‘She’ was also inspired by the Queen of Sheba. Legend tells that Sheba’s Breasts are the site of King Solomon’s mines. The rural town of MALKERNS is well worth exploring. It lies in a lush and beautiful valley of fertile farmland with sugarcane and pineapples as the main crop. There are wonderful craft shops, including outlets selling locally made decorative candles, basketware and batik work ideal to take home as mementos of a worthwhile trip to this region.
Between Lobamba and the Royal Swazi Sun complex at Ezulwini, on the Mbabane/Manzini road, is the turn-off to the MANTENGA FALLS AND MANTENGA CRAFT.

The airport is perhaps the Kingdom’s flagship facility in the nationwide infrastructural investment envisioned by His Majesty to facilitate economic growth to first world status. The idea, as expressed in His Majesty’s National Development Strategy (NDS), is to enable the country’s direct air access to world source markets for tourism and trade, people and cargo. The launch of the airport, following its successful licensing in full accordance with ICAO standards, opens a new chapter in Swazilandís aviation story. The subsequent announcement of an additional new airline to operate from the airport to major regional cities such as Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Maputo is making news and lends credence to the belief that the Kingdom is ready to receive long haul flights from all corners of the world, as the airport is able to accommodate long distance travellers within the country and beyond. With facilities for handling large aircraft and long-haul flights, provisions for future growth and easy access to Manzini, the hub of Swaziland, King Mswati III International Airport, operated by the Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority, is the gateway to the region. MBABANE Mbabane is Swaziland’s capital and largest city with a population of around 100,000. Located on the Mbabane River and its tributary the Polinjane River in the Mdimba Mountains, the average elevation of the city is 1243 meters making for a more moderately humid, subtropical climate. The city derives its name from a CHIEF MBABANE KUNENE, who lived in the area when British settlers arrived. The current town dates back to 1887 and the area rapidly became part of the transport route from the Transvaal to Mozambique- later known as Ndelakayomi (path never empty) due to heavy traffic. A Bombardier Mickey Wells, is recorded as being the first European settler who opened a primitive hotel, restaurant and store in the area. Mbabane was founded in 1903 when Swaziland fell under British protection and the new government opted for the cooler climate of the Highveld.
North of Mbabane, the road to Luve is known as PINE VALLEY. Along here visitors can view

Mozambique is a warm country with beautiful places and exotic beaches, of fine white sand. Its archipelagos contain stories and legends that are still respected from generation to generation. Its charm comes not only from its exotic places or landscapes or environment of their cities, but a contrast in the land and the people who are born and live with passion and intensity.
Mozambique RELIGION Christian (Catholic and Protestant), Muslim and Hindu and traditional beliefs. In the days of Eid (Islamic religion) and Easter (Christian religion), the Government decrees a public holiday. LANGUAGES Portuguese is the official language of the country, however, there are more than 60 languages spoken throughout the country. English is spoken in major cities as business language. CULTURE
Mozambique is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east and Swaziland and South Africa to the south west. A warm welcome awaits travellers to this remarkable country with its untouched tropical coastline. The total area of Mozambique is 799 380 Km2 from North to South, to the East it has a coastline with the Indian Ocean for over 2515 km. The more south we go the narrower the land becomes, its widest point being the Central Northern region, between the Coast and the point where the rivers Aruángua and Zambeze meet. The narrowest southern point, in the Namaacha region is only 47,5 km wide. From the coastal plains inland, the land changes abruptly from a narrow palm studded strip of beach along the coast to a broad belt of savannah and woodland then forested mountains. Forty percent of the territory has an altitude rising to 200 meters; Cabo Delgado, Nampula and the interior of Inhambane, are plateaus of 200 to 600 meters and further on between Manica and Sofala the land forms mountains with heights above 1000 meters.

Traditional ways of life are preserved in Mozambique - varying from province to province. This cultural kaleidoscope provides visitors with a series of experiences and precious memories. Makonde people of Cabo Delgado in the northeast, are known for their fearlessness and initiation rites. For male initiation, participants dance with masks “MAPICO.” The body is tattooed and the teeth are sharped only for aesthetic purposes. The Makonde are also talented artisans producing fine wood - primarily mahogany, ebony and ironwood and ivory sculpture which usually depict the stories of previous generations. Music is very important for the people of Niassa living in the sparsely populated northwest. They use wind instruments made of dry and hollow gourds, producing a sound like a trumpet. Bands of musicians play instruments of different sizes. Macuas women, in Nampula Province, paint their faces with “muciro,” a stratum of white root. They also make straw baskets, mats and other items as well as ebony and clay sculptures.
The traditional and spicy food of Zambezia is highly appreciated. The Zambezian grilled chicken with coconut milk, is a delicacy. The agility of Nhau dancers from Tete province is much admired. To the sound of thumping beats, they dance holding huge and scary wooden masks. For Chopes of Inhambane province “Timbila” is the name of a percussion instrument. The instrument is similar to a xylophone. During the dance, up to 23 different sizes of instruments are played. The Chope also use “mbira” made of strips of metal attached to a hollow box and played with the fingers.

The name says it all, and the tropical reef areas are spectacular.
VILANCULOS is the gateway to the BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO which consists of six Islands. WELCOME Seychelles is proud to be playing its role in the east3Route initiative and only recently welcomed delegates from the partner nations to Seychelles for a highly successful Investment forum. I have no doubt that such partnerships are what the future will increasingly be made of as we look at erstwhile rivalries in a new light and realize that co-operation takes us further than they can ever hope to. East3Route is a wonderful example of this at work and our fruitful synergies over the past several years are bearing fruit in new synergies and partnerships and, most importantly, a new vision of the future. ALAIN ST ANGE SEYCHELLES MINISTER FOR TOURISM & CULTURE
We are indeed natural partners and complement each other perfectly in what we offer and I look forward to all the opportunities that will create in future years for us all.
The Seychelles Islands…another world In an overcrowded world that is becoming more polluted by the day, the Seychelles archipelago is fast gaining recognition for the integrity of its unique ecosystems. Almost half of the country’s landmass has been granted protected status as nature reserves. Since that distant time when Seychelles’ granite and coral islands became scattered over a secluded corner of the Indian Ocean, they have remained timeless sanctuaries for some of the rarest species of flora and fauna on earth. Seychelles is made up of 115 islands which lie between 4 and 10 degrees south of the equator. There are two categories of islands: the tall, granitic Inner Islands which cluster around the main islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue and the more remote coral isles and atolls that make up the Outer Islands. MAHÉ, the principal island, is home to the international airport and the tiny capital Victoria, and lies roughly 1000 miles from the East African coast in splendid isolation amid the crystalline azure waters of the western Indian Ocean. PRASLIN, originally known as Isle de Palme, lies about 40km north east of Mahé. It is here that one finds the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which nurtures the legendary coco-de-mer, and was once thought to be the original site of the biblical Garden of Eden. Praslin posseses some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world

ACCOMMODATION
Seychelles natural beauty can be discovered at any number of scenic viewing spots throughout the islands, where the mountain roads offer excellent panoramas of the sapphire ocean and virgin forests. Major tour operators offer excursions on full day or halfday basis and will include a Creole barbecue lunch. Prices and schedules are available from individual tour companies.

A trip to the beach at Port Launay for swimming and snorkelling is also included in some excursions.
As an alternative to land-based accommodation, charter a yacht and take a leisurely cruise around the islands. The Seychelles Secrets portfolio of hotels illustrates perfectly Seychelles’ particular brand of tourism with a range of accommodation that proposes island-style living at its best in establishments that have been especially vetted to provide an enticing blend of excellent facilities and value for money, offering true Creole hospitality in picturesque surrounds that are characteristic of the islands’ legendary natural beauty.
CULTURE The Creole Language is spoken by everyone and is an adaptation of 17th Century French, African languages and Malagasises. It has been elevated to national language status, earning the same respect that English and French receive and today Creole is a written language as well as spoken. Such freedom has resulted in an outburst of creativity in plays, poetry and prose. The Creole culture is today a major attraction for worldwide visitors who want to experience a unique way of life. Creole architecture is another important cultural aspect of the islands. The traditional designs of some of the grand old houses with their steep roofs and many openings to catch the island breezes, have been assimilated into modern architecture, ensuring comfortable living in the tropics.
Traditional music and dance such as the sega, with its tantalising hip swaying movements to the pulsating sounds of drums, fiddles or guitars is found in Seychelles, as on other islands. But the dance and music most unique to Seychelles is the moutia - a dance seen by the old colonial authorities as so sexually brazen that it was banned. After a week of hard labour on the plantations, the workers would gather under the coconut palms and dance to the sound of the moutia drums.
Other African looking instruments also make up the musical heritage of the Seychellois sound: the one stringed zez from Madagascar, the bonm and the kaskavel. All were played during the long warm starlit evenings on verandas or alongside beach fires. DINING Kreol Cuisine has its origins in the racially mixed Seychellois. From India comes many varieties of curry; from China comes popular rice dishes and stir-fried vegetables and noodles with steamed fish, and from France the aromatic blends of garlic and herbs. All these influences, mixed with a huge selection of seafood plucked out of the Indian Ocean and a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables make eating out in Seychelles a culinary delight. Local delicacies include kari zourit (a creamy octopus curry) and tec tec soup (a small white shellfish collected from the beaches and made into a soup usually with pumpkin). Local cuisine is on offer at several charming restaurants, often in romantic settings which feature Creole culinary traditions and popular international specialities. Most hotels offer a fine combination of international and Creole dishes on their menu. Be sure to frequent some of the many restaurants that specialise in Creole dishes on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, where you can dine tête à tête with your feet in the sand on uncrowded beaches.
FESTIVALS AND EVENTS Diary dates not to be missed by locals and visitors alike include the annual Kreol Festival in October, a vibrant celebration of traditional culture music, dance, arts, crafts, cuisine, customs and the general way of island life. The annual Carnaval International de Victoria, due to be held in February 2016.
A fascinating week full of the colours, sounds, flavours and fragrances of a corner of the Creole world that treasures its traditions while embracing the opportunities of the present. WEDDINGS AND HONEYMOONS Seychelles has long been dubbed ‘the islands of love’. Home to the unique Vallée de Mai purported by many to be the site of the original Garden of Eden, it is little wonder that lovers are inspired to take their vows and wed in this gentle and romantic atmosphere. Marriage and/or honeymoon packages are offered by several leading travel agencies ensuring that your wedding day or honeymoon can be as blissfully romantic and unique as you in your wildest dreams can conjure, and that the memories of those special days will become forever emblazoned in your hearts.
