Visitors are welcomed into the heart of Zulu villages to experience the culture, consult with a sangoma or watch a rural wedding ceremony and experience Zulu hospitality. African art and crafts, ranging from basket weaving and beadwork to pottery, can be viewed at either dedicated craft centres or at roadside markets. Places of cultural interest to visit include the ZULULAND BATTLEFIELD SITES, FORT NONGQAYI, KING CETSHWAYO’S MEMORIAL and the EMAKHOSINI CULURAL HERITAGE PARK where the legendary ‘Valley of the Kings’ is located. Zululand is also known as the birthplace of African game conservation and led the way in the fight to preserve our wildlife heritage, a fight that continues today with the danger posed to our Rhino population by poachers. THE LANGUAGE OF THE BEADS The earliest Zulu beads were made of organic materials such as seeds and seashells or ivory. They were coloured with dyes made from fruit, roots or mud.

THULA THULA ELEPHANT EXPANSION PROJECT: A community project for the necessary extension of habitat for our elephants. Our original herd of 7 elephants has now increased to the maximum sustainable capacity. Thula Thula has now the opportunity to add a further 3500 ha of land to increase their habitat. These community projects not only support our wildlife, but also improve employment and education in the local communities. THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONSERVATION FUND was created to raise funds for this expansion with the need of 35km of electric fencing, land management and conservation, increased security and the list goes on, to keep our wildlife growing safely.

Through the ages, in addition to being objects of adornment, the most important aspect of Zulu beadwork was the message carried by these works of art. The colours all have different meanings. White is associated with purity, pink with poverty, blue with loneliness and green with pining. Zulu maidens would send long involved messages to their loved ones, weaving thoughts of love, grief or jealousy, poverty or uncertainty into their intricately patterned creations.

Trained guides are available to ensure an informative experience. EMAKHOSINI - VALLEY OF THE KINGS. Many royal Zulu ancestors including King Shaka lived, and were buried here, and the reconstruction of this area gives us a rare glimpse into the historic past of the Zulu dynasty. Shaka’s successor and half-brother, Dingane, established his Royal Residence in the eMakhosini and it was here where he clashed with the Voortrekkers who sought new lands in the Zulu Kingdom. The valley also contains the Hill of Execution, kwaMatiwane, where Dingane’s men put Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and his followers to death. There are several other sacred, ancient places in the valley such as Nobamba, the homestead of Shaka’s grandfather Jama, which is also referred to as “the most sacred site” and “the place of unity and strength”. Also situated nearby is Makheni, a hallowed spot where men are not permitted to strike or even touch the ground with their sticks, lest they disturb the spirits of their ancestors. THE SPIRIT OF THE EMAKHOSINI MEMORIAL is surrounded by seven animal horns, representing the graves of the seven Zulu kings who lie buried here namely Unkosinkulu, Zulu, Phunga, Mageba, Ndaba, Jama and Senzangakhona. OPHATHE GAME RESERVE, established in 1991 and located on the southern banks of the White Mfolozi River, was proclaimed as a sanctuary for the Black Rhino and other endangered species. The development of both the eMakhosini Valley and Ophathe Game Reserve led to what is known as the eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park. KZN BATTLEFIELDS ROUTE THE TRANQUIL HILLS AND GRASSLANDS OF ZULULAND CARRY MANY A FAMOUS BATTLE SCAR. The canvasses of the 19th century are filled with one historical drama after another as three forces pitted their armies against each other - fighting for land and supremacy. Between 1836 and 1852, Zulu warriors clashed with Boer settlers. Some years later the might of the British military was hurled against the Zulu nation. During the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, and the independent Afrikaner movements twice took up arms against the British Empire first from 1880 to 1881 and then for three years

during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). The tranquil hills and grasslands of Zululand carry many a famous battle scar. The largest concentration of battle sites in South Africa are to be found in Inland KwaZulu-Natal. Visited by military history enthusiasts from around the world, the sites are visitor friendly and linked by the Battlefields Route. Several of the key towns on the Route are in Zululand, as are dozens of battlefields and fortifications, museums, war graves and memorials.

The key towns on the Battlefields Route are Newcastle, Ladysmith, Dundee, Vryheid, Ulundi, Melmoth and Eshowe. Between them they

offer a fascinating array of military landmarks that capture the atmosphere of a turbulent past. The Route can be travelled as a self-drive adventure, and an excellent guide-map is available from all local tourist information offices. Alternately, join a tailor-made battlefield tour in the company of a specialist guide who will show you sites and recount tales of epic battles, bravery and betrayal. THE ZULULAND BIRDING ROUTE

Zululand’s Route 66 between Gingindlovu and uPhongolo follows one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand. Settlers resident in Port Natal in the early 19th Century would set off in oxwagons on well-worn tracks and cross into Zululand at a drift very close to the present N2 bridge over the Thukela River.

The route has a spectacular 605 bird species and is a treasure

The merchandise their wagons carried, as they forded the Thukela River into Zululand, included cotton and lambswool blankets, calico cloth, brass and copper wire, and coloured glass beads. Other commodities such as pick handles were not uncommon, and sometimes a gun or some gunpowder might be smuggled in to enhance profits. During their trips which would last up to three months, the traders hunted and bartered and on their return journey, if all went well, they would return to Port Natal with their wagons filled with ivory, buffalo and wildebeest skins, rhino horn, hippo teeth and hippo fat.

The wagon tracks have long since made way for a modern infrastructure but today’s visitors in their airconditioned SUV’s, navigated by GPS, can still get a sense of how things used to be on Route 66. Many of its valleys once teeming with wild game, have been divided up into fertile farms but Zululand remains a place deeply rooted in its ancient traditions.

The Zululand Birding Route is much more than a convenient information and programme, proving that birding can generate income for local communities - in this way, birding tourism adds real value to wild birds and habitats in which they occur; it provides a tangible reason to conserve natural habitats and the birds that occur in them. The Birding Route is helping create a new career path for young South Africans from disadvantaged communities from communities neighboring the birding spots for training, and through ongoing follow up assistance and mentorship this sharpens and assesses their skills and empowers them totally different and take a day out birding. Fascinating marine and coral fossils are all that remain of an ancient coastline and can still be found scattered along the western shores of the lake.

MTUBATUBA Mtubatuba, located about 200 km north of Durban, began as a railway siding in 1903 and was named after the local Zulu chief. The town was established in 1916 with the building of the first sugar mill, a shop, bank and hotel. Today Mtubatuba has developed from a humble railway siding into a strong sub-regional commercial, service, transport and administrative centre for the entire North Eastern Zululand region. Recent commercial growth has seen the establishment of a number of retail and wholesale outlets with the Umfolozi Sugar Mill, part of Illovo Sugar group, remaining the industrial flagship of Mtubatuba. Mtubatuba and surrounds offer a great opportunity to explore the rich culture of the Zulu Nation, world renowned game reserves and the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, all located in close proximity to the town. Various accommodation establishments are available in the area along with restaurants and sporting facilities. LED & Tourism Officer: Smangenle Zondi 035 550 0069. With its rugged hills, savannah and wooded areas it is one of the largest game parks in South Africa, and offers an astonishing kaleidoscope of game viewing options. The Big 5, namely elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard may all be spotted from the comfort of your own car or on an open safari vehicle with a registered guide. A wide range of plant life sustains many other mammals including cheetah, wild dog, giraffe and nyala. Other activities include elephant and rhino tracking, game drives, night game drives, self-guided or wilderness trails that take you near to wildlife either on foot, on horseback or in a canoe. The accommodation available ranges from luxury five star lodges to cozy chalets and tented camping options. The Hluhluwe area also produces a large proportion of South Africa’s pineapples. Much like South Africa as a whole, Mpumalanga is a melting pot of cultures. To the San and Koi- San who’s rock art is found in the caves all over the Mpumalanga, and the colourful geometric arts of the Ndebele cultural villages. The Kingdom of Swaziland, bordered in the north, west and south by South Africa and in the east by Mozambique, is a partner in the exciting east3Route (e3R) initiative established in 2011 to generate crossborder development and co-operation with regard to job creation, economic growth and of course tourism, in the countries that form part of the route. Swaziland is renowned for its scenic beauty and offers visitors a ‘royal experience’ amongst mountainous grandeur, cascading waterfalls, lush forests and fertile valleys. The capital MBABANE, and the industrial hub of MANZINI offer an upbeat alternative to the tranquility found in the more outlying areas while the Ezulwini Valley is the Kingdom’s main tourist area offering a wealth of attractions. Traditional ceremonies are an integral part of Swazi life and this provides visitors with a wonderful opportunity to partake in some fascinating cultural activities. The monarchy and the people of Swaziland actively maintain and preserve their remarkable cultural heritage, allowing visitors to get a better idea of traditional African culture. The most important of these is the sacred NCWALA or FESTIVAL OF THE FIRST FRUITS held annually in December /January on a date chosen by astrologers in conjunction with the phases of the moon and sun. This ritual is held to renew the strength of the King and the Swazi Nation for the coming year.

THE UMHLANGA OR REED DANCE takes place during August or early September. Swazi maidens, of marriageable age, gather at the Queen Mother’s residence and set out in parties to gather reeds. The reeds are used to repair the windbreak around the Queen Mothers residence. The singing and rhythmic dancing takes place on the afternoon of the sixth and seventh days at the Royal Village. SIBHACA dancing is known for its stirring rhythms, energetic and dramatic movements and bright colours. Swaziland has a remarkable and impressive range of TRADITIONAL ARTS AND CRAFTS with many of its products now found in trendy ethnic boutiques around world. Throughout the country men and women are at work creating the finest handicrafts such as creative basket ware in vibrant colours, wood and stone carvings, glassware, exquisite candles, batik items, jewellery all uniquely Swazi.

There are a number of casinos across the country, nightclubs in the more populous areas, and many hotels also have evening entertainment on offer. Accommodation ranges from upmarket and luxury hotels and lodges to bush camps, charming guest houses and bed & breakfasts, self-catering establishments or camping sites and backpackers.

In some places there is also a chance to see talented craftspeople at work, and these provide both income and empowerment for their craftspeople from poor rural communities.

Also at Lobamba is the EMBO STATE PALACE, generally used to meet visiting dignitaries. Only authorised persons may approach or photograph it. The SOMHLOLO STADIUM at Lobamba is used for soccer matches and concerts as well as for the annual Independence celebration of the colourful Reed Dance ceremony held in late August / early September every year. Between Lobamba and the Royal Swazi Sun complex at Ezulwini, on the Mbabane/Manzini road, is the turn-off to the MANTENGA FALLS AND MANTENGA CRAFT. The striking Nyonyane Mountain with its exposed granite peak known as the EXECUTION ROCK is in, and is accessed through MLILWANE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY. With its peak at 1110m, Nyonyane is where ancient Bushmen once lived and where Swazi Royal graves are situated giving historical significance. Ancient stories are often told how this magnificent peak acquired its name. Swaziís suspected of witchcraft or criminals were forced to walk off the edge at spearpoint for their crimes.

The distinctive twin-peaks, SHEBA’S BREASTS, are clearly visible from the Malagwane Hill as the traveller descends from Mbabane into the Ezulwini Valley. The rock formations are named after the legendary beauty and mysterious Queen of Sheba from Ethiopia, who supposedly seduced King Solomon. The author J. Rider Haggard, was inspired by the peaks and it is believed that he wrote his famous ‘King Solomon’s Mines’ while staying at the private Kapola Estate. His lesser-known novel ‘She’ was also inspired by the Queen of Sheba. Legend tells that Sheba’s Breasts are the site of King Solomon’s mines. The rural town of MALKERNS is well worth exploring. It lies in a lush and beautiful valley of fertile farmland with sugarcane and pineapples as the main crop. There are wonderful craft shops, including outlets selling locally made decorative candles, basketware and batik work ideal to take home as mementos of a worthwhile trip to this region.

MBABANE Mbabane is Swaziland’s capital and largest city with a population of around 100,000. Located on the Mbabane River and its tributary the Polinjane River in the Mdimba Mountains, the average elevation of the city is 1243 meters making for a more moderately humid, subtropical climate. The city derives its name from a CHIEF MBABANE KUNENE, who lived in the area when British settlers arrived. The current town dates back to 1887 and the area rapidly became part of the transport route from the Transvaal to Mozambiquelater known as Ndelakayomi (path never empty) due to heavy traffic. The NGWENYA MINE an iron ore mine is located on Bomvu Ridge, northwest of Mbabane and near the north-western border of Swaziland. This mine is considered to be the world’s oldest.

Mickey Wells, is recorded as being the first European settler who opened a primitive hotel, restaurant and store in the area. Mbabane was founded in 1903 when Swaziland fell under British protection and the new government opted for the cooler climate of the Highveld. North of Mbabane, the road to Luve is known as PINE VALLEY. Along here visitors can view a series of waterfalls on the BLACK UMBELUZI RIVER and the granite heights of ‘SIBEBE ROCK’. Mozambique is a warm country with beautiful places and exotic beaches, of fine white sand. Its archipelagos contain stories and legends that are still respected from generation to generation. Its charm comes not only from its exotic places or landscapes or environment of their cities, but a contrast in the land and the people who are born and live with passion and intensity. RELIGION Christian (Catholic and Protestant), Muslim and Hindu and traditional beliefs. In the days of Eid (Islamic religion) and Easter (Christian religion), the Government decrees a public holiday. LANGUAGES

Mozambique is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east and Swaziland and South Africa to the south west. A warm welcome awaits travellers to this remarkable country with its untouched tropical coastline. The total area of Mozambique is 799 380 Km2 from North to South, to the East it has a coastline with the Indian Ocean for over 2515 km. The more south we go the narrower the land becomes, its widest point being the Central Northern region, between the Coast and the point where the rivers Aruángua and Zambeze meet. The narrowest southern point, in the Namaacha region is only 47,5 km wide. From the coastal plains inland, the land changes abruptly from a narrow palm studded strip of beach along the coast to a broad belt of savannah and woodland then forested mountains. Forty percent of the territory has an altitude rising to 200 meters; Cabo Delgado, Nampula and the interior of Inhambane, are plateaus of 200 to 600 meters and further on between Manica and Sofala the land forms mountains with heights above 1000 meters.

Portuguese is the official language of the country, however, there are more than 60 languages spoken throughout the country. English is spoken in major cities as business language. CULTURE Traditional ways of life are preserved in Mozambique - varying from province to province. This cultural kaleidoscope provides visitors with a series of experiences and precious memories. Makonde people of Cabo Delgado in the northeast, are known for their fearlessness and initiation rites. For male initiation, participants dance with masks “MAPICO.” The body is tattooed and the teeth are sharped only for aesthetic purposes. The Makonde are also talented artisans producing fine wood - primarily mahogany, ebony and ironwood and ivory sculpture which usually depict the stories of previous generations. Music is very important for the people of Niassa living in the sparsely populated northwest. They use wind instruments made of dry and hollow gourds, producing a sound like a trumpet. Bands of musicians play instruments of different sizes. Macuas women, in Nampula Province, paint their faces with “musiro,” a stratum of white root.

40 | Explore e3R

They also make straw baskets, mats and other items as well as ebony and clay sculptures. The traditional and spicy food of Zambezia is highly appreciated. The Zambezian grilled chicken with coconut milk, is a delicacy. The agility of Nhau dancers from Tete province is much admired. To the sound of thumping beats, they dance holding huge and scary wooden masks. For Chopes of Inhambane province “Timbila” is the name of a percussion instrument. The instrument is similar to a xylophone. During the dance, up to 23 different sizes of instruments are played. The Chope also use “mbira” made of strips of metal attached to a hollow box and played with the fingers.

MAPUTO is the capital and a cosmopolitan hub of culture, where delectable fresh cuisine, a wonderful blend of Portuguese, Indian and African influences, is served, and retail therapy at countless local markets and shops will ensure the discovery of a treasure or two. The tourism sector is growing and amongst the many POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATIONS are: PONTA DE OURO which captures the very essence of a Mozambican holiday and swimming with the dolphins and scuba diving is a must. GAZA PROVINCE has a blend of quiet, beautiful beaches, action packed deep sea fishing and in BILENE one can find plenty watersport adventure. XAI-XAI (the capital) bustles with shops, markets, restaurants and bars. When Vasco Da Gama rounded Africa in the late 15th century, he fell in love with INHAMBANE and named it ‘Terra de Boa Gente’ or Land of Good People. The name says it all, and the tropical reef areas are spectacular.

VILANCULOS is the gateway to the BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO which consists of six Islands. A place of incomparable beauty, turquoise waters, idyllic beaches, bewitching coral reefs and rare tropical fish - the ultimate destination for ocean-lovers and divers. BENGUERRA ISLAND is home to a variety of animal, bird and plant life and the lush forests and exquisite landscape is incredible to behold. ISLANDS The Seychelles Islands…another world In an overcrowded world that is becoming more polluted by the day, the Seychelles archipelago is fast gaining recognition for the integrity of its unique ecosystems. Almost half of the country’s landmass has been granted protected status as nature reserves. Since that distant time when Seychelles’ granite and coral islands became scattered over a secluded corner of the Indian Ocean, they have remained timeless sanctuaries for some of the rarest species of flora and fauna on earth. Seychelles is made up of 115 islands which lie between 4 and 10 degrees south of the equator. There are two categories of islands: the tall, granitic Inner Islands which cluster around the main islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue and the more remote coral isles and atolls that make up the Outer Islands. MAHÉ, the principal island, is home to the international airport and the tiny capital Victoria, and lies roughly 1000 miles from the East African coast in splendid isolation amid the crystalline azure waters of the western Indian Ocean. PRASLIN, originally known as Isle de Palme, lies about 40km north east of Mahé. It is here that one finds the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which nurtures the legendary coco-de-mer, and was once thought to be the original site of the biblical Garden of Eden. Praslin posseses some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world with Anse Lazio – widely acclaimed as the most beautiful beach on earth. LA DIGUE is located 7kms from Praslin and offers authentic island - style experiences. With breathtaking, beaches, adorned with granite boulders, time feels as if it has stood still here, and traditional modes of transport such as bicycles and carts drawn by oxen add to this feeling. 44 | Explore e3R

CULTURE The Creole Language is spoken by everyone and is an adaptation of 17th Century French, African languages and Malagasises. It has been elevated to national language status, earning the same respect that English and French receive and today Creole is a written language as well as spoken. Such freedom has resulted in an outburst of creativity in plays, poetry and prose. The Creole culture is today a major attraction for worldwide visitors who want to experience a unique way of life. Creole architecture is another important cultural aspect of the islands. The traditional designs of some of the grand old houses with their steep roofs and many openings to catch the island breezes, have been assimilated into modern architecture, ensuring comfortable living in the tropics.

Traditional music and dance such as the sega, with its tantalising hip swaying movements to the pulsating sounds of drums, fiddles or guitars is found in Seychelles, as on other islands. But the dance and music most unique to Seychelles is the moutia - a dance seen by the old colonial authorities as so sexually brazen that it was banned. After a week of hard labour on the plantations, the workers would gather under the coconut palms and dance to the sound of the moutia drums.

Other African looking instruments also make up the musical heritage of the Seychellois sound: the one stringed zez from Madagascar, the bonm and the kaskavel. All were played during the long warm starlit evenings on verandas or alongside beach fires. DINING Kreol Cuisine has its origins in the racially mixed Seychellois. From India comes many varieties of curry; from China comes popular rice dishes and stir-fried vegetables and noodles with steamed fish, and from France the aromatic blends of garlic and herbs. All these influences, mixed with a huge selection of seafood plucked out of the Indian Ocean and a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables make eating out in Seychelles a culinary delight. Local delicacies include kari zourit (a creamy octopus curry) and tec tec soup (a small white shellfish collected from the beaches and made into a soup usually with pumpkin). Local cuisine is on offer at several charming restaurants, often in romantic settings which feature Creole culinary traditions and popular international specialities. Most hotels offer a fine combination of international and Creole dishes on their menu. Be sure to frequent some of the many restaurants that specialise in Creole dishes on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, where you can dine tête à tête with your feet in the sand on uncrowded beaches.

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS Diary dates not to be missed by locals and visitors alike include the annual Kreol Festival in October, a vibrant celebration of traditional culture music, dance, arts, crafts, cuisine, customs and the general way of island life. The annual Carnaval International de Victoria, due to be held in February 2016.

A fascinating week full of the colours, sounds, flavours and fragrances of a corner of the Creole world that treasures its traditions while embracing the opportunities of the present. WEDDINGS AND HONEYMOONS Seychelles has long been dubbed ‘the islands of love’. Home to the unique Vallée de Mai purported by many to be the site of the original Garden of Eden, it is little wonder that lovers are inspired to take their vows and wed in this gentle and romantic atmosphere. Marriage and/or honeymoon packages are offered by several leading travel agencies ensuring that your wedding day or honeymoon can be as blissfully romantic and unique as you in your wildest dreams can conjure, and that the memories of those special days will become forever emblazoned in your hearts.
