INTRODUCTION
THE HILLCREST STORY The town began as a small holiday village in 1895 on the farm ‘Albinia’, owned by William Gillitt. The shape and size of ’Albinia’ shows it started as a Voortrekker farm. There is reason to believe that this farm may have been called Buffelsfontein or ‘Buffalo Spring’, inspired by the wetland in the present Springside Nature Reserve. It also tells us about the wildlife present in 1835. The main wagon road to Pietermaritzburg and the interior passed over the farm. When minerals were discovered, the wagon traffic increased. The Natal Government railway line was built through the area by 1879 and D.D. Fregona opened a store, near present Oxford Village, in the 1890s. Ernest Acutt leased a portion of Gillitt’s farm Albinia to start the village. The name Hill Crest (originally two words) was suggested by Senator Frank Churchill in the 20th century. RETIREMENT/FRAIL CARE
RETIREMENT ACCOMMODATION AND CARE CENTRE CHOICES – A ONE WAY STREET! Today there are a growing number of private, unregistered retirement facilities and care Homes that do not comply with legal requirements; such as for example, registering with CSOS, and the Department of Social Development. And, as they are not competing on a level playing field, they are often able to offer lower prices than their longer established and more traditional counterparts. But sadly there are no free lunches and lower costs are invariably accompanied by inferior services, and even sometimes by an increased risk of abuse. The choice of which facility to retire to, is a one way street, from which, if you get it wrong, few return unscathed. So what can be done to make sure that we make the right decision? Investigate thoroughly and ask the right questions; some being as follows: FINANCIAL - What is the history of the organisation? Can you have a copy of the audited financial statements? Ascertain what the prices/fees are? (And importantly in the event of death what refund is due to your estate?).
WAITING LISTS- Do they have a waiting list? How long does it normally take for the offer of a unit (or Frail Care bed) to arise? How much is the current levy - and what does it cover? Is there a levy stabilisation fund? How much is in it? Has the facility ever had to raise a special levy? ... Why? What for? (Special levies are often an indication of mismanagement). LEGAL COMPLIANCE – Is the facility registered with CSOS and/or the Department of Social Development (Ask to be shown a copy of the registration certificates). When was the facility last inspected? Is the facility a non-profit? Perhaps the most important indicators of reliability relate to provenance and pedigree. The Hills Retirement Community is just such a organisation; established in 1904, and under the responsible guidance of Rotary – they are indeed the Go-To people for retirement matters. Henry Spencer - Author on retirement matters.

WATERFALL
WATERFALL & CRESTHOLME
Development in the Upper Highway has happened at an unprecedented pace over the past 12 years with the suburbs of Kloof, Hillcrest and Gillitts being almost fully developed. As a result there is more interest in Waterfall and Crestholme which are remarkably beautiful parts of the world with magnificent views of gorges and valleys. The present inhabitants are hoping it will not be too densely developed and to this end the Ethekwini Planning Department have put a Development Plan in place that is intended to control growth by limiting the minimum size of sub-divisions. This will apply to complexes as well as free-standing properties and it will become
increasingly difficult to re-zone agricultural land for housing development. It has changed from young couples starting out and earning in the lower to middle income bracket to more established families in the middle to upper income bracket. MUSHROOM FARM
THE MUSHROOM FARM Free Range Shopping At Its Best THE MUSHROOM FARM site is located on the old working Chef Mushroom Farm. The main shed housing the majority of retail units are converted mushroom growing sheds. While the smaller shed was a composting plant in its previous life. Today, however, it is quite hard to imagine that some of the shops were once filled to the brim with smelly compost! Efforts have been made to create an environment which appeals to both local highway residents as well as meanderers from further afield who are looking for an outing on the weekends. There are not many places in the bustling highway area where you can have an award winning cup of coffee whilst having a chicken pecking at your feet. The centre is not only home to a group of enthusiastic traders but it is also home to an ever growing animal farmyard. Valentino the Cameroonian Goat rules the farmyard from atop his pile of rocks which have been aptly named Goat Mountain. His subjects include a menagerie of ducks, chickens, guinea fowl and rabbits! There have been a number of great escapes by the rabbits and as a result, you will often come across a rabbit or two while you walk through the centre.

BARK ANGEL was founded by Debbie Moss. She has such compassion for animals and saw the need in her area to help when there was a lost or abused dogs. This quickly spread to other area’s. Bark Angel is a registered NPC with Debbie Moss, Heather Barclay and Jackie Salter. All the dogs that are rescued or surrendered to them are checked by the vet, and all puppies are vaccinated. They do fundraisers and auctions to fund the vet bill, and rely on the help from the public. Bark Angel also has a feeding scheme in the Clairwood area where there are a minimum of 120 dogs that get fed. They go through about 80 to 90 tins of dog food and about 85 kgs of pellets every second week, and often find more dogs or puppies as owners do not have their pets sterilized. They also appeal for kennels for animals that do not have any cover. The puppies and adult animals are fostered by people who help until they find each one a permanent loving home. Debbie does a great deal of the fostering on her own. If there is anybody who is looking for a new edition to their family please contact them. Any members of the public who are willing to donate monthly, or when they are able, or a company that is willing to donate towards Bark Angel, be it cash or animal food, it will be extremely appreciated. Please contact Jackie on 082 306 0405 for any further questions or information required. Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance | 43

The KwaZulu-Natal Blind & Deaf Society is a leading service provider in the field of Blindness and Deafness in KwaZulu-Natal. The Society currently reaches the poor, unemployed African people living in rural areas who do not have the finances or ability to receive services. The greatest challenge that the Society faces, is how to improve these unfortunate individuals quality of life. The sad situation is that these almost forgotten people are not only deprived, but also disabled, which leaves them feeling very inadequate and incapable, and the sad fact is that most of them receive no external assistance. KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society provides a range of services to blind, partially-sighted, deaf, hardof-hearing, and deaf-blind people in Durban and its surroundings, Chatsworth, Pinetown, Umlazi, Amanzimtoti and Durban South, Inanda, KwaMashu, Ntezuma, Phoenix, Verulam, Tongaat, Kwa Dekuza, Pietermaritzburg and Zululand. The Society’s work is substantially improving the lives of our clients, contributing to their development and independence.

EDUCATION ST MARY’S INSPIRED GIRLS REMARKABLE WOMEN, SINCE 1906 “We believe that every girl who walks through our gates, walks towards a brighter future. We give her a place to belong, a place to grow, in character, in confidence, in conviction. With lessons in respect, kindness and selflessness, that will take her far. At the heart of what we do, is heart. Rooted in faith, in God, we strive to instil life-long values empowering our girls to not only face the future, but thrive in it. We believe in holistic learning. An education that goes beyond the classroom – to the field, the stage, the community. We cultivate curiosity, not just teaching our girls, but teaching them to think”. In Grade R our aim is to have happy little girls whom we encourage to learn through play and educational games that promote critical thinking and problem-solving. Our girls also benefit from our whole school facilities like the

EDUCATION THE SCHOOL OF MODERN MONTESSORI is situated in Gillitts, and offers preschoolers a ‘home from home’ environment where skills for life are developed. Maria Montessori, who was an Italian doctor & psychologist founded the method. She believed that children learn by experiences gained from their environment. She encouraged parents to make the most of the first six years. Each classroom is divided into various areas – all making the most of a child’s innate love of learning. In the Practical Life section the children develop co-ordination and dexterity and become independent by carrying out activities. In the Sensorial area children experience colours, sounds, touch, taste, dimension and weight. Activities help the children develop skills for reading and writing. They learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by using specifically designed materials. Cultural subjects are also tackled and help the children understand more about their world and their important place in it. Prospective parents are encouraged to have a consultation with the Principal, Yvonne Evans, at which point the child’s individual needs, the various subjects areas and extra curricular activities can be discussed in detail. Bumble Bees provide a homely environment with only the best care and attention. The school aims to provide each child with individual, as well as group attention. PICKING UP GERMAN IS CHILD’S PLAY As adults, learning a new language is a daunting task, however most children accomplish this with ease if they are exposed to the language regularly from a young age. This is why the Deutsche Schule Durban (DSD) now provides a toddler group (from 18 months) in addition to its established Kindergarten. The DSD is premised on the belief that multilingualism and intercultural skills are an important part of an education towards a global future. It is a small, independent primary school affiliated with ISASA. The school provides a warm, family-centred environment that makes learners and their parents feel welcome. It subscribes to a holistic view of education, using a combination of the South African and German curricula. Classes are small, allowing individual attention for learners from the very supportive teaching staff. For those not living close to the school (based in Cowies Hill), there is a school bus service.
