INTRODUCTION

THE HILLCREST STORY The town began as a small holiday village in 1895 on the farm ‘Albinia’, owned by William Gillitt. The shape and size of ’Albinia’ shows it started as a Voortrekker farm. There is reason to believe that this farm may have been called Buffelsfontein or ‘Buffalo Spring’, inspired by the wetland in the present Springside Nature Reserve. It also tells us about the wildlife present in 1835. The main wagon road to Pietermaritzburg and the interior passed over the farm. When minerals were discovered, the wagon traffic increased. The Natal Government railway line was built through the area by 1879 and D.D. Fregona opened a store, near present Oxford Village, in the 1890s. Ernest Acutt leased a portion of Gillitt’s farm Albinia to start the village. The name Hill Crest (originally two words) was suggested by Senator Frank Churchill in the 20th century. WATERFALL / CRESTHOME

WATERFALL & CRESTHOLME

Development in the Upper Highway has happened at an unprecedented pace over the past 15 years with the suburbs of Kloof, Hillcrest and Gillitts being almost fully developed.

It has changed from young couples starting out and earning in the lower to middle income bracket to more established families in the middle to upper income bracket.

As a result there is more interest in Waterfall and Crestholme which are remarkably beautiful parts of the world with magnificent views of gorges and valleys.

LIBRARY

The present inhabitants are hoping it will not be too densely developed and to this end the Ethekwini Planning Department have put a Development Plan in place that is intended to control growth by limiting the minimum size of sub-divisions.

A functions room is available to hire. Children’s entertainment is organised during the holiday.

This will apply to complexes as well as free-standing properties and it will become increasingly difficult to rezone agricultural land for housing development.

KRANZKLOOF NATURE RESERVE Situated 4 km from the centre of Kloof this nature reserve boasts an abundance of wildlife. It affords spectacular views across the forested gorge cut by the Molweni River. Most of the reserve’s 532 hectares is covered by forest and vegetation.

Flora in the reserve is mainly of the coastal type and the gorge is a botanical paradise. Cycads are found in the reserve, as are aloes and numerous wild flowers including agapanthus, protea, watsonia and fire lilies.

Its best known attraction is the delightful and well developed picnic area adjacent to the dam at the head of Kloof Falls. The parks board has established an informative ‘Interpretative Centre’ at the site. This spot is easily reached by following Kloof Falls Road. Prepared walks originate from both picnic areas and visitors may view the falls or descend into the gorge, following the river course.

Entrance Fee: R50 per adult, R20 children under 12 includes picnic site facilities and walking trails.

The Wildlife Society organises hiking trails incorporating the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve with other green belt areas within the Kloof / Gillitts / Everton area. Fauna in the reserve includes bushbuck, bushpig, duiker, mongoose, vervet monkey and rock rabbit (dassie), to name but a few. Birdlife is abundant and visitors are often rewarded by sighting Crowned Eagles, hornbills and loeries in the forests, and hammerkop and kingfishers near the water’s edge. 40 | Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance

PET CHARITIES

PAW PRINTS RESCUE AND REHOMING’s main focus is on the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of puppies. Over the last 5 years they have rehomed around 600 pups and dogs. They have been fostering for years, and take care of all the pups at home in Westville. They ensure all pups are vaccinated at 6 weeks or before they are homed, and they will never leave foster care unless they are healthy and ready for their new family. Older dogs are also all sterilized and vaccinated before being homed. The adoption fee now includes Microchipping and a sterilization fee. Like most rescue organisations they rely on fund raising and donations from supporters and are constantly finding creative ways to raise money. If you are looking to adopt a pup or pooch, please feel free to look them up on Facebook. SA ANIMAL LIFE LINE was founded by Prishani Pillay who has an unconditional love for animals, treating animals not just as pets but as family. SA Animal Life Line was started when they took in our first rescue kitten that had been abandoned by his mother and once she saw the need to help the voiceless animals that are abandoned and abused she could not stop and decided to start the NPO to help these animals by fundraising to get them to a vet and find them a forever home. At SA Animal Life Line they rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals and fundraising plays a huge part in this. The fundraising allows them to have the animals checked by a vet. Check out the website is www.sall.org.za. If there is any person who is willing to donate to this worthy cause, no matter how small, it will be greatly appreciated. We plan to do so for many a year still as we believe it a right to have a beautiful life and dignity in death. It is our commitment to this philosophy that drives our famous levels of care during such trying times in life. We are your Hospice, and we are here for you!

www.highwayhospice.co.za The Highway Hospice is one of Durban’s oldest Non Profit Organizations. We have been providing Hospice and Palliative care for the eThekwini community for over 35 years.

As a Hospice, we provide care for people with advanced, incurable terminal illness in the final stages of life. We promote Palliative care which is treatment focused on the patient as opposed to the disease. The goal is to, “make people feel better”. Not only physically by providing comfort but also emotionally, socially, practically, intellectually and spiritually. This starts at diagnosis and continues during treatment, and moves through to end of life as needed.

Mariannhill

Monastery

The Mariannhill Monastery was founded in December 1882 by Abbot Francis Pfanner and his band of Trappist monks. They came to South Africa in response to a call from Bishop Ricards of Port Elizabeth. However, they eventually founded the great Monastery and mission centre of Mariannhill. At one time with 285 monks, it was the largest monastery in the world. Being Benedictine in tradition, the constant rhythm of prayer and work was well suited for life in the monastery and instrumental in bringing Christianity and civilization to the African people. In 1885 the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood was founded for the education of womenfolk. Because the strict Trappist rule of silence precluded the preaching of the Gospel, it was decided in 1909 that the Abbey of Mariannhill should be changed into an active missionary to be called the ‘Congregation of Mariannhill Missionaries.’ The pioneering work among the African people has had a farreaching influence throughout South Africa. St Mary’s Hospital, located next to the Monastery, was established by Mariannhill Monastery and had a very important role to play in the lives of many of the local inhabitants. However, the hospital is now a state run establishment. 44 | Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance

EDUCATION ST MARY’S Inspired Girls Remarkable Women, since 1906 “We believe that every girl who walks through our gates, walks towards a brighter future. We give her a place to belong, a place to grow, in character, in confidence, in conviction. With lessons in respect, kindness and selflessness, that will take her far.

This learning takes place in a caring environment where lifelong friendships are formed and our school motto, Service before Self, God before All, is fundamental to our ethos.

At the heart of what we do, is heart. Rooted in faith, in God, we strive to instil life-long values empowering our girls to not only face the future, but thrive in it.

We have a history of producing outstanding academic results. Our matric results year on year place us as one of the top IEB schools in both KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa.

We believe in holistic learning. An education that goes beyond the classroom – to the field, the stage, the community. We cultivate curiosity, not just teaching our girls, but teaching them to think”.

We invite you to visit our beautiful school for a personal tour. Please contact Michelle in our marketing department on 031 764 9856 or email mdimarco@stmarysdsg.co.za.

In Grade R our aim is to have happy little girls whom we encourage to learn through play and educational games that promote critical thinking and problem-solving. Our girls also benefit from our whole school facilities like the Chapel, Amphitheatre, Sports Hall, water-based Astroturf, heated Swimming Pools and Creativity Centre.

Visit our webpage for further information www.stmarysdsg.co.ca

Being an all girls’ school we can concentrate on the unique developmental growth and needs of girls.

EDUCATION THE SCHOOL OF MODERN MONTESSORI is situated in Gillitts, and offers preschoolers a ‘home from home’ environment where skills for life are developed. Maria Montessori, who was an Italian doctor & psychologist founded the method. She believed that children learn by experiences gained from their environment. She encouraged parents to make the most of the first six years. Each classroom is divided into various areas – all making the most of a child’s innate love of learning. In the Practical Life section the children develop co-ordination and dexterity and become independent by carrying out activities. In the Sensorial area children experience colours, sounds, touch, taste, dimension and weight. Activities help the children develop skills for reading and writing. They learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by using specifically designed materials.

HALF OR FULL DAY • Pre-school 21/2 - 6 years • Junior Primary 6 - 9 years • Senior Primary 9 - 12 years Fully equipped Montessori environment. Highly trained & experienced staff. High teacher to child ratio. Holiday programmes. Extra mural activities.

Cultural subjects are also tackled and help the children understand more about their world and their important place in it. Prospective parents are encouraged to have a consultation with the Principal, Yvonne Evans, at which point the child’s individual needs, the various subjects areas and extra curricular activities can be discussed in detail.

The combination of small classes with exceptional and dedicated teachers, and children that grow in confidence and are happy, is a recipe for success. We have wonderful testimonies of students who would not have got through matric exiting our school with a bachelor pass and confidence to face the world because they know they can achieve anything they set their mind to. Hillcrest Collegiate encourages individual thinking and does not believe in a one size fits all type of education. Contact 031-765 2982 or more info.

KUMON School Readiness For Pre-Schoolers Starting Grade 1 marks a big transition in the lives of children. By the time they start school, many children already display a wide range of skills, knowledge, and school readiness behaviours. Most early education programmes and pre-schools will guide kids to follow classroom rules, be flexible to new routines, and be enthusiastic about learning. KUMON does even more to enable pre-schoolers to be prepared for Grade 1. KUMON gives children an academic advantage due to the focus on enhancing attentiveness, strengthening perseverance when completing tasks, fostering independent learning, and promoting organisational skills. School success depends not only on knowledge and skills, but also on the habits and attitudes with which children approach learning. Evidence shows the characteristics that KUMON cultivates including attentiveness, persistence, and independence go hand-and-hand with higher scores in maths and English; beginning as early as kindergarten and at least through the end of Grade 1. Enrolling your pre-schooler in KUMON today can prepare them for the challenges of BIG SCHOOL and beyond, and set them up for lifelong success. Contact Wendy at the Kloof Study Centre and Anele at the Hillcrest Study Centre on 079Â 898 0642 and 071Â 857 1761 respectively to find out how KUMON can support your pre-schooler in their early development. Her love for children is what brought Victoria to open BUMBLE BEES in January 2003. They have grown from year to year watching toddlers turn into wonderful, able little people and after many years of a successful playschool, a Baby Care was opened in 2007. Bumble Bees provide a homely environment with only the best care and attention. The school aims to provide each child with individual, as well as group attention. They encourage activities which promote a healthy, stable development in all the necessary areas of your child’s life i.e. physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially, all of which help them grow in confidence and self-esteem. Bumble Bees Baby Care provides care for only 8 babies. Each baby has its own cot, whether their stay is half day or full day. There are two age groups for the older children: 1 to 3 years and 3 to 5 years. The growth of Bumble Bees depends on their continued love and enthusiasm for your children and your parental input is important to Victoria. Call 082 615 5220 for more information.

We are registered with the Depts of Health, Social Development and also Education. Waterfall Educare is KZN’s only READ FOR AFRICA licensed preschool. This amazing literacy programme ensures children receive the correct foundations and puts them well ahead of the pack!
