INTRODUCTION
THE HILLCREST STORY The town began as a small holiday village in 1895 on the farm ‘Albinia’, owned by William Gillitt. The shape and size of ’Albinia’ shows it started as a Voortrekker farm. There is reason to believe that this farm may have been called Buffelsfontein or ‘Buffalo Spring’, inspired by the wetland in the present Springside Nature Reserve. It also tells us about the wildlife present in 1835. The main wagon road to Pietermaritzburg and the interior passed over the farm. When minerals were discovered, the wagon traffic increased. The Natal Government railway line was built through the area by 1879 and D.D. Fregona opened a store, near present Oxford Village, in the 1890s. Ernest Acutt leased a portion of Gillitt’s farm Albinia to start the village. The name Hill Crest (originally two words) was suggested by Senator Frank Churchill in the 20th century. OUTER WEST OFFICES The Civic Offices for the entire Outer West are located in Hillcrest, adjacent to the library, and are open from 07:30 - 15:30 Mon to Fri. Tel: 031-311 2716. A sporting and social club is situated in the very heart of Hillcrest and caters for tennis, bowls and football. There is a function hall at the club available for hiring for up to 70 people. The grounds were donated to the people of Hillcrest by a member of the Gillitt family, an early pioneering family in the area. Tel: 031-765 3994.
LIBRARY Tel: 031-311 2731. Opening times are Monday - Friday 9.00 - 17.00; Saturday 8.30 - 12.30. A variety of library material is available including books written in English, Afrikaans and Zulu, magazines, videos, DVDs, CDs, talking books (audio-books), cassette tapes, a reference section, study guides and textbooks. Friends of Hillcrest Library are an active support group who raise funds for new books. Children’s Holiday Programmes (fun activities geared towards children) take place in the long school holidays. There is an attractive children’s playground, at the back of the library complete with shady trees, swings, slide and see-saw.

SPRINGSIDE NATURE RESERVE - HILLCREST’S HIDDEN GEM Tucked away in the heart of Hillcrest, Springside Nature Reserve is well worth a visit! It is one of the last remaining relatively unspoilt natural areas in Hillcrest, boasting grassland, wetland and forest. Wandering along the well maintained paths you may come across one of the many streams that flow through the reserve, a Flap-neck Chameleon, or even a Duiker or Bushbuck. Springside is a popular birding spot and even has its own nesting pair of Crowned Eagles. In spring, a vivid colour palette emerges as the grassland plants begin to flower, the reserve being the home of more than 320 species of wild flowers and trees! There is also a picnic site and ablution facilities. A Resource Centre with information about the reserve is periodically open to the public. HILLCREST DEVELOPMENT Since it’s origin in 1895, Hillcrest has developed steadily over the years to become the thriving metropolis it is today. The SOS Line should be used by the public to strengthen support for any emergency, incident or community concern (eg. medical, fire, crime, suspicious vehicles or behaviour). “We need to activate community eyes and ears to help bring results while also supporting the police.” In addition to gathering and dispersing incident information, SA CAN motivates for excellent policing, emergency and security service for many Highway residents when called on the SOS Line. Development in the Upper Highway has happened at an unprecedented pace over the past 15 years with the suburbs of Kloof, Hillcrest and Gillitts being almost fully developed.
It has changed from young couples starting out and earning in the lower to middle income bracket to more established families in the middle to upper income bracket.
As a result there is more interest in Waterfall and Crestholme which are remarkably beautiful parts of the world with magnificent views of gorges and valleys.

The present inhabitants are hoping it will not be too densely developed and to this end the Ethekwini Planning Department have put a Development Plan in place that is intended to control growth by limiting the minimum size of sub-divisions.

KLOOF / GILLITTS CLIMATE Rainfall figures have been kept in Kloof since 1935 and the average yearly rainfall in this period has been recorded as 1074,5 millimetres. The bulk of the rain falls in summer months from October to March. Summer temperatures (from 18 to 29˚ C) and winter temperatures (from 12˚ to 20˚) are tempered by the fact that Kloof lies approximately 550 metres above sea level. Being in a sub-tropical region, Kloof rarely experiences frost. Prevailing winds during summer are north-east to south-east and, during winter, north-east to south-west. During spring the early mornings and evenings are occasionally misty. KRANZKLOOF NATURE RESERVE Situated 4 km from the centre of Kloof this nature reserve boasts an abundance of wildlife. It affords spectacular views across the forested gorge cut by the Molweni River. Most of the reserve’s 532 hectares is covered by forest and vegetation.
Flora in the reserve is mainly of the coastal type and the gorge is a botanical paradise. Cycads are found in the reserve, as are aloes and numerous wild flowers including agapanthus, protea, watsonia and fire lilies.
Its best known attraction is the delightful and well developed picnic area adjacent to the dam at the head of Kloof Falls. The parks board has established an informative ‘Interpretative Centre’ at the site. This spot is easily reached by following Kloof Falls Road. Prepared walks originate from both picnic areas and visitors may view the falls or descend into the gorge, following the river course.
Entrance Fee: R50 per adult, R20 children under 12 includes picnic site facilities and walking trails.
The Wildlife Society organises hiking trails incorporating the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve with other green belt areas within the Kloof / Gillitts / Everton area. Fauna in the reserve includes bushbuck, bushpig, duiker, mongoose, vervet monkey and rock rabbit (dassie), to name but a few. Birdlife is abundant and visitors are often rewarded by sighting Crowned Eagles, hornbills and loeries in the forests, and hammerkop and kingfishers near the water’s edge. 40 | Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance

PAW PRINTS RESCUE AND REHOMING’s main focus is on the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of puppies. Over the last 5 years they have rehomed around 600 pups and dogs. They have been fostering for years, and take care of all the pups at home in Westville. They ensure all pups are vaccinated at 6 weeks or before they are homed, and they will never leave foster care unless they are healthy and ready for their new family. Older dogs are also all sterilized and vaccinated before being homed. The adoption fee now includes Microchipping and a sterilization fee. Like most rescue organisations they rely on fund raising and donations from supporters and are constantly finding creative ways to raise money. SA ANIMAL LIFE LINE was founded by Prishani Pillay who has an unconditional love for animals, treating animals not just as pets but as family. SA Animal Life Line was started when they took in our first rescue kitten that had been abandoned by his mother and once she saw the need to help the voiceless animals that are abandoned and abused she could not stop and decided to start the NPO to help these animals by fundraising to get them to a vet and find them a forever home. Mariannhill
Monastery
The Mariannhill Monastery was founded in December 1882 by Abbot Francis Pfanner and his band of Trappist monks. They came to South Africa in response to a call from Bishop Ricards of Port Elizabeth. However, they eventually founded the great Monastery and mission centre of Mariannhill. At one time with 285 monks, it was the largest monastery in the world. Being Benedictine in tradition, the constant rhythm of prayer and work was well suited for life in the monastery and instrumental in bringing Christianity and civilization to the African people. In 1885 the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Precious Blood was founded for the education of womenfolk. Because the strict Trappist rule of silence precluded the preaching of the Gospel, it was decided in 1909 that the Abbey of Mariannhill should be changed into an active missionary to be called the ‘Congregation of Mariannhill Missionaries.’ The pioneering work among the African people has had a farreaching influence throughout South Africa. St Mary’s Hospital, located next to the Monastery, was established by Mariannhill Monastery and had a very important role to play in the lives of many of the local inhabitants. However, the hospital is now a state run establishment. 44 | Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance
Tours are conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays at 3pm, commencing at the Monastery Gate. Tours can be joined from Durban Beachfront – check with Durban Publicity Association for details. Visitors are welcome to go sightseeing at any time but are reminded that admittance to the various departments is allowed in the company of any official guide at appointed times. For example, no student will ever forget the experience of participating in one of the History Department’s trips to Zululand or to more exotic destinations in Europe. Leadership skills are developed in the co-curricular activities which span both the sporting and cultural spheres. The school regularly has national, provincial and regional representation.
