25th EDITION
Introduction THE HILLCREST STORY The town began as a small holiday village in 1895 on the farm ‘Albinia’, owned by William Gillitt. The shape and size of ’Albinia’ shows it started as a Voortrekker farm. There is reason to believe that this farm may have been called Buffelsfontein or ‘Buffalo Spring’, inspired by the wetland in the present Springside Nature Reserve. It also tells us about the wildlife present in 1835. The main wagon road to Pietermaritzburg and the interior passed over the farm. When minerals were discovered, the wagon traffic increased. The Natal Government railway line was built through the area by 1879 and D.D. Fregona opened a store, near present Oxford Village, in the 1890s. Ernest Acutt leased a portion of Gillitt’s farm Albinia to start the village. The name Hill Crest (originally two words) was suggested by Senator Frank Churchill in the 20th century. Health & Beauty RETIREMENT ACCOMMODATION AND CARE CENTRE CHOICES – A ONE WAY STREET! Today there are a growing number of private, unregistered retirement facilities and care Homes that do not comply with legal requirements; such as for example, registering with CSOS, and the Department of Social Development. And, as they are not competing on a level playing field, they are often able to offer lower prices than their longer established and more traditional counterparts. But sadly there are no free lunches and lower costs are invariably accompanied by inferior services, and even sometimes by an increased risk of abuse. The choice of which facility to retire to, is a one way street, from which, if you get it wrong, few return unscathed. So what can be done to make sure that we make the right decision? Investigate thoroughly and ask the right questions; some being as follows: FINANCIAL - What is the history of the organisation? Can you have a copy of the audited financial statements? Ascertain what the prices/fees are? (And importantly in the event of death what refund is due to your estate?).
WAITING LISTS- Do they have a waiting list? How long does it normally take for the offer of a unit (or Frail Care bed) to arise? How much is the current levy - and what does it cover? Is there a levy stabilisation fund? How much is in it? Has the facility ever had to raise a special levy? ... Why? What for? (Special levies are often an indication of mismanagement). LEGAL COMPLIANCE – Is the facility registered with CSOS and/or the Department of Social Development (Ask to be shown a copy of the registration certificates). When was the facility last inspected? Is the facility a non-profit? Perhaps the most important indicators of reliability relate to provenance and pedigree. The Hills Retirement Community is just such a organisation; established in 1904, and under the responsible guidance of Rotary – they are indeed the Go-To people for retirement matters. Henry Spencer - Author on retirement matters.

SPRINGSIDE NATURE RESERVE - HILLCREST’S HIDDEN GEM
Tucked away in the heart of Hillcrest, Springside Nature Reserve is well worth a visit! It is one of the last remaining relatively unspoilt natural areas in Hillcrest, boasting grassland, wetland and forest. Wandering along the well maintained paths you may come across one of the many streams that flow through the reserve, a Flap-neck Chameleon, or even a Duiker or Bushbuck. Springside is a popular birding spot and even has its own nesting pair of Crowned Eagles. In spring, a vivid colour palette emerges as the grassland plants begin to flower, the reserve being the home of more than 320 species of wild flowers and trees! There is also a picnic site and ablution facilities. A Resource Centre with information about the reserve is periodically open to the public. WATERFALL & CRESTHOLME
Mon - Fri 9.00 - 17.00 • Sat: 8.30 - 12.30
Development in the Upper Highway has happened at an unprecedented pace over the past 12 years with the suburbs of Kloof, Hillcrest and Gillitts being almost fully developed.
A functions room is available to hire. Children’s entertainment is organised during the holiday.
As a result there is more interest in Waterfall and Crestholme which are remarkably beautiful parts of the world with magnificent views of gorges and valleys. The present inhabitants are hoping it will not be too densely developed and to this end the Ethekwini Planning Department have put a Development Plan in place that is intended to control growth by limiting the minimum size of sub-divisions. This will apply to complexes as well as freestanding properties and it will become increasingly difficult to re-zone agricultural land for housing development. It has changed from young couples starting out and earning in the lower to middle income bracket to more established families in the middle to upper income bracket. Education THE SCHOOL OF MODERN MONTESSORI is situated in Gillitts, and offers preschoolers a ‘home from home’ environment where skills for life are developed. Maria Montessori, an Italian doctor & psychologist founded the method. Each classroom is divided into various areas – all making the most of a child’s innate love of learning. In the Practical Life section the children develop co-ordination and dexterity and become independent by carrying out activities. In the Sensorial area children experience colours, sounds, touch, taste, dimension and weight. Activities help the children develop skills for reading and writing. They learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by using specifically designed materials. Cultural subjects are also tackled and help the children understand more about their world and their important place in it. Prospective parents are encouraged to have a consultation with the Principal, Yvonne Evans, at which point the child’s individual needs, the various subjects areas and extra curricular activities can be discussed in detail. Education Her love for children is what brought Victoria to open BUMBLE BEES in January 2003. They have grown from year to year watching toddlers turn into wonderful, able little people and after many years of a successful playschool, a Baby Care was opened in 2007. Bumble Bees provide a homely environment with only the best care and attention. The school aims to provide each child with individual, as well as group attention. They encourage activities which promote a healthy, stable development in all the necessary areas of your child’s life i.e. physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially, all of which help them grow in confidence and self-esteem. Bumble Bees Baby Care provides care for only 8 babies. Each baby has its own cot, whether their stay is half day or full day. There are two age groups for the older children: 18 months to 3 years and 3 to 5 years. The growth of Bumble Bees depends on their continued love and enthusiasm for your children and your parental input is important to Victoria. Call 082 615 5220 for more information. CAWOOD ACADEMY A Nurturing Environment to Cultivate Extraordinary Minds. Cawood is a special needs school catering for a wide range of children, ranging from gifted to autistic. We develop each individual’s unique talents whilst remediating their developmental delays. Small classes enable the staff to spot problems and rectify them quickly. The children are accepted as “out of the box” thinkers who enjoy a hands-on approach to learning. P.E is non-competitive. Staff are experienced and knowledgeable about their particular areas of expertise. Our school pets add a unique touch to Cawood. The children are taught to handle them with respect and love. In return, it is not unusual to see a dog on a child’s lap or a cat sitting on a window sill in a classroom. CAPS is followed as a base-line. Discipline is based on “Respect”. Within boundaries we have flexibility. Cawood Academy is a “home-awayfrom-home”! Call 031-765 8288 for more information. 58 | Hillcrest/Kloof at a Glance

Education CHARLTON SCHOLARS caters for all children who have learning difficulties that require remediation, as well as learners who would benefit from a smaller school environment. Some of the difficulties that learners present with include: • auditory processing • reading • writing • numeracy • expressive language Small classes ensure individual attention for every learner. Our remedial teachers, occupational and speech therapists, work together throughout, to achieve remediation within 3 years. The introduction of computers with educational programmes helps each child gain confidence in this subject. Art, craft, needlework and a variety of creative activities form an integral part of the school curriculum. We focus on academics at an individual level and encourage: • language skills • gross motor and fine motor development • social skills • self confidence Their future starts with us. WATERFALL EDUCARE is one of the very few, registered daycares and preschools that have stood the test of time! Opened in 1993 by Helen Spalding, a registered nurse, we strive to provide parents with the type of childcare they are looking for and their children deserve. The staff and owners realise it is a privilege and an honour to be entrusted with the care and early education of your child. As parents ourselves, we understand and respect how hard it is with having to leave your child in someone else’s care. Our staff are all qualified, passionate and dedicated. We are registered with the Depts of Health, Social Development and also Education. Waterfall Educare is KZN’s only READ FOR AFRICA licensed preschool. This amazing literacy programme ensures children receive the correct foundations and puts them well ahead of the pack! Our children enter Grade 1 at various private and government schools throughout the Highway area, where they almost always receive glowing reports from the outset. We keep our classes small so can unfortunately only offer a limited number of spaces to new children each year. To secure your space, don’t hesitate to call Helen on 031-762 1274 / 082 490 2887.
