Durban is also proud to be hosting Ubuntu - The Opera. This is presented as a 21st anniversary salute to South Africa’s Democracy. It will be at The Playhouse.

THE ICONIC DURBAN ICE ARENA IS BACK! For the past 20 months, the doors of the Durban Ice Rink have been closed, as renovations to restore the Ice Rink to its former glory have been underway, and Thursday 24 September saw the new and improved Durban Ice Arena open its doors. A long time in the making, and experiencing a few unforeseeable setbacks that are part and parcel when restoring any old building, a truly world-class facility awaits all patrons, and guarantees to take the Durban leisure and entertainment sector to an entirely new level; a level never seen before in the City of Durban. So what can you expect from this newly polished gem? With the tagline of, “pure entertainment,” it promises to be nothing less, and its attributes and offerings extend far beyond that of just ice skating, but include great entertainment offerings, tantalizing cuisine and a little something for everyone. According to the Owner, Mr Sastri Ramiah, “this project was certainly not a simple undertaking, as we renovated a landmark with such historic value, with the vision of creating a truly multi-purpose international arena, that can not only cater to our local
14 | www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2015
and international ice-skating fraternity, but a venue that can be transformed for mixed used events, adding to the overall offering of Durban as a whole.” The Arena’s flexibility is always been a key component of the overall development concept, and through the use of the efficient design technology including state of the art refrigeration, dehumidification and air control systems, the opportunities for the now International size ice surface is endless. Ramiah has a dedication to the development of the ice-skating sport, and through skating aids such as the Bobby Seal and Penny the Penguin, believes that many more children may take to the ice, and hopefully will enter into learn to skate programmes that the Arena will be instituting in 2016, with the help of team of professional coaches and trainers. Added to this, professional skaters, or those wanting to truly enter this sporting code, will have access to the Skate Shop, which will provide a retail outlet for ice-skates, figure skating dresses, ice-hockey skates and equipment and a range of other ice-skating related items.
The new and improved venue includes a host of private venue areas, ideal for Corporate events, team building and special events, such as birthday parties and the like, all overlooking the ice surface below, and flanked by the Arena’s own restaurant, providing a range of food and beverage offerings. School excursions are also on the menu at the new Ice Arena, offering a mixture of education with fun. Learners will be exposed to the learnings of how ice is made and maintained, culminating in an ice-skating session at the end of the excursion. Every last detail of this new and exciting venue has been well thought out, from the kiddies birthday party packages to the DJ sessions that will take place on a Saturday night, to the complimentary shuttle service from nearby additional parking areas, making the opening of the Durban Ice Arena something to certainly talk about! For more information regarding session times and prices, please visit www.durbanicearena.co.za or call 031 332 4597

KWAZULU-NATAL TOURISM PROVIDERS TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT THE LILIZELA TOURISM PROVINCIAL AWARDS KwaZulu-Natal announced the names of the provincial winners of the 2015 Lilizela Tourism Awards. The announcement was made an awards ceremony held on 16 September 2015 at The Greyville Racecourse where all the province’s finalists were publically honoured for their contribution to service excellence and quality assurance in the tourism industry. Billed to recognise only the best in the South African tourism industry, the Awards became the definitive accolade for excellence in tourism when they were launched in 2013. They are the ultimate reward for entrepreneurial excellence, and service excellence that sets global benchmark standards. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the KwaZulu-Natal finalists and the winners. The quality of their offerings and continued commitment to their trade has not only impacted positively on their business, but it also enhances South Africa’s global competitiveness,” says Mr Thulani Nzima, Chief Executive Officer of South African Tourism. “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the KwaZulu-Natal finalists and the winners. The Lilizela Tourism Awards are an important platform to celebrate tourism businesses and offer the public an opportunity to cast their vote for establishments that offer excellence beyond the ordinary. This year’s provincial awards are being held in the month of September – which also happens to be the time the country and industry at large celebrate Tourism Month. Commenting on the Lilizela Awards, Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Michael Mabuyakhulu said “Congratulations to all the winners from KwaZulu-Natal. It is so pleasing to see so many members of the trade within the province participating at these awards; it goes to show that they too value the importance of delivering excellent service to our visitors. When tourist comes to KZN, they want the exceptional service and hospitality that we have promised them and the trade are the people that assist us to deliver that promise. It is also such a pleasure to celebrate our most valuable partners in the sectors during Tourism Month, when we are actually calling on everyone to come and Re-Discover the beauty of KwaZulu-Natal. We encourage all the members of the trade to continue to support this initiative and enter again next year. ” 16 | www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2015

As locally-based seasoned ‘prommers’ will know, the Durban event is modelled on the wildly exuberant last night culmination of Britain’s worldrenowned BBC Promenade Concert series. The Playhouse Opera is the scene of a major landmark event on the South African arts calendar with the world premiere of Ubuntu – The Opera by Juan Burgers. Funded by the National Lotteries Commission and presented under the auspices of Esayidi FET College in collaboration with Bravo Africa Entertainment, the production will be given five performances in the Playhouse Opera Theatre between 17 and 22 November.

Burgers’ stirring libretto focuses on key events in the years of struggle against apartheid with the iconic roles of Nelson Rolihlaha Mandela and Winnie Madikizela Mandela as its inspiring figureheads. They share the stage with other great struggle icons such as Nkosi Albert Luthuli, Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbeki, among others. Aside from the principal cast, the production features a powerhouse chorus of some 60 singers performing with the KZNPO under the baton of Lykele Temmingh. With Burgers as its artistic director, vocal coach and repetiteur and Raphael Vilakazi as its executive producer, Ubuntu – The Opera

1000 Hills
Enquiries: 031 777 1874 Website: http://1000hillstourism.com/
When Europeans arrived at the Port of Natal in 1825, the Valley of 1000 Hills was a remote and isolated area teeming with game. WS Field was one of the first Europeans to settle in 1851, and leopards were said to occasionally spend the night on the veranda of the Field homestead in what is now Kloof. Within a few years a wagon route opened up between Durban and the interior, close to what is now the Old Main Road. The establishment of the railway line linking the goldfields with the port rapidly followed the discovery of gold in the Transvaal in the 1880s, and the rail and road traffic through the 1000 Hills increased. The Valley of 1000 Hills is named after the many hills and valleys which rise up from the banks of the Umgeni River as it flows from the distant Drakensberg mountains to the Indian Ocean. The valley has been home to the Zulu people for centuries, with many continuing to practice and live their unique traditional lifestyle. Their colourful ceremonies and expressive, artistic culture give this area its vibrant atmosphere and creative energy. Explore the roots of Zulu culture by taking an organised tour deep into tribal lands. Witness ancient Zulu ceremonies, as traditional diviners ‘throw the bones’ and communicate with their spiritual ancestors at PheZulu Safari Park. PheZulu also offers traditional Zulu dancing and cultural shows, as well as game drives, local curios, wonderful views across the valley and a crocodile and snake park. On the crest of the hills overlooking the valley are leafy suburbs and village centres, which have astonishing views and a year round holiday climate of warm summers and cool winters. These villages offer all the creature comforts one would expect including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts unique to the area.
VULEKA CENTRE Vuleka Trust is an NGO based at The Vuleka Centre in Botha’s Hill. We are ideally located between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, nestled in the Valley of 1000 Hills. A special focus of Vuleka is youth development and leadership programmes.

Sapphire Coast The town of Amanzimtoti (meaning ‘sweet waters’ in Zulu) is said to have been named by the great Zulu King Shaka after tasting the fresh water that flows out of the hills at this scenic spot. It is situated on the coast a short drive south of Durban. This part of the coast is a popular destination for scuba divers who come to explore Aliwal Shoal, a fossilised sand dune that lies 5km off the Umkomaas river mouth. A myriad of warm water reef fish and cold water fish converge on Aliwal Shoal to create a kaleidoscope of colour. For those who prefer to remain on terra firma, the beaches

Umhlanga
Originally home to San hunter-gatherers, the area south of the Tugela River (incorporating present-day Umhlanga) was later occupied by Nguni-speaking people who were unified under King Shaka in the early 1800s into the proud Zulu nation. The area came under British control soon after, becoming part of the large estate belonging to the great sugar magnate, Sir Marshall Campbell, who sailed to South Africa from Glasgow in 1850. Indian indentured labourers were brought in to work on the sugar estates in 1860, bringing with them a vibrant and colourful culture, giving the area its unique multicultural flavour. In 1869, Umhlanga’s first beach cottage was built on a rocky site overlooking the sea and in the true spirit of Umhlanga hospitality tea and scones were served to passers-by. The reflective roof of the cottage was also used as a beacon by passing ships’ captains to navigate safely around Umhlanga’s rocky headland. However, the cottage was converted into the Oyster Box hotel in the 1930s and in 1953 Umhlanga’s distinctive red and white lighthouse was built to warn mariners away from the dangers of the rocks. The first hotel in Umhlanga was built in the 1920s by Virginia, daughter of Sir Marshall Campbell. Other hotels soon followed these two and the village of ‘Umhlanga Rocks’ became the most sought-after area for locals
to visit during their holidays. The rest, as they say, is history. Situated on the east coast of South Africa just north of the vibrant Port City of Durban, Umhlanga faces the the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and has the best South African accommodation, with superb holiday apartments, luxury hotels, lodges and B&B’s. It also has up-market Office Parks and first world Shopping Centres. The golden sandy beaches stretch northwards for more than 200 kilometres, all the way to the spectacular Isimangaliso Wetland Park, a world heritage site. Inland from Umhlanga, endless fields of sugarcane give way to the undulating landscape of the Valley of 1000 Hills, the massive Inanda Dam and the mystical hidden valleys of Zululand.
restaurants and nature trails, all in a secure environment. The spectacular Gateway shopping centre and Sibaya Casino are some of the key attractions that Umhlanga Rocks has to offer. Ocean enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers will be in their element; surfing, deep-sea fishing, whale watching and dolphin viewing, scuba diving, kite boarding and microlight flips are just some of the many activities available on this wonderful stretch of coastline.

Growing in popularity is the annual Edendale Marathon that tracks a route through the township outside Pietermaritzburg on 15 November. For action of a slightly different kind, the Midlands Ultra Triathlon will pit some of the fittest – and not so fit – multi-sport athletes against a demanding course around the picturesque Midmar Dam on the last weekend in November.
On 18 October, it’s time for another increasingly popular event, the Amashova Classic Cycle Race sponsored by Tsogo Sun. Proceedings start outside the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and will see hundreds riders of all ability tackle courses over www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2015 | 29

This is summer in Zululand, where you feel the warm embrace of Africa’s sun, are welcomed with wide smiles by the local people, and the memory of your experiences lingers long after you have departed. This is a place where hiking and nature trails abound and game viewing opportunities are never far out of reach.
For more info check out the website www.zululand.kzn.org.za Ocean, mangrove swamps and life-giving lagoons give way to rolling green hills and indigenous forests. Further inland you will find tea plantations, cattle ranches and pretty, historical towns such as Vryheid, with its many examples of Tudor and Edwardian architecture, Paulpietersburg, where you can relax in the therapeutic sulphur springs and Ulundi, the historic capital of the region.
Did you know? Tea produced at the Ntingwe Tea Estate near Inkandla is rated among the ten
best teas in the world and has attracted
interests from buyers in London and the
United States. It is marketed under the label ‘Zulu Tea’.
Nongoma, the royal City of Zululand and central to Zulu culture, where among the attractions are tours of the royal palaces and experiencing Zulu dancing and the traditional way of life. Visitors are enchanted by the atmosphere of the town, the rural simplicity of the people and the informal trading that plays such an important part in their lives. Tradition reaches fever pitch at the traditional Mona Market, which is held in the third week of every month. The market attracts thousands of people from all over KwaZulu-Natal. They bring a fascinating variety of wares from fruit and vegetables, beadwork and beer pots, to cattle on the hoof. The Mona Market is an open market on the outskirts of the town and is a hive of activity, with people buying,
selling and bartering to meet their most pressing needs. The R66 between Gingindlovu and Phongolo follows one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand. In the early 19th Century, settlers would set off from Port Natal in their oxwagons on well-worn tracks along the coast and cross the Thukela River into the heart of the Zulu Kingdom. Settlers were required to obtain permission from the king before heading inland to hunt and trade in his territory. Following in these same paths soon after were missionaries, transport riders, soldiers, colonial administrators, police, settlers and farmers. This route has been witness to immense changes and terrible conflict – clan against clan and kingdom against kingdom. The wagon tracks have long since made way for modern infrastructure but today’s visitors can still get a sense of how things used to be on Route 66.

THE BATTLEFIELDS ROUTE The canvasses of the 19th century are filled with one historical drama after another as three forces pitted their armies against each other - fighting for land and supremacy. Between 1836 and 1852, Zulu warriors clashed with Boer settlers. Some years later the might of the British military was hurled against the Zulu nation. During the AngloZulu War of 1879, and the independent Afrikaner movements twice took up arms against the British Empire - first from 1880 to 1881 and then for three years during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). The tranquil hills and grasslands of Zululand carry many a famous battle scar. The largest concentration of battle sites in South Africa
are to be found in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Visited by military history enthusiasts from around the world, the sites are visitor friendly and linked by the Battlefields Route. Several of the key towns on the Route are in Zululand, as are dozens of battlefields and fortifications, museums, war graves and memorials. The Zululand towns on the Battlefields Route are ESHOWE, MELMOTH, ULUNDI, BABANANGO, VRYHEID and PAULPIETERSBURG. Between them they offer a fascinating array of military landmarks that capture the atmosphere of a turbulent past. The Route can be travelled as a self-drive adventure, and an excellent guide-map is available from all local tourist information offices. Alternately, join a tailor-made battlefield tour in the company of a specialist guide who will show you sites and recount tales of epic battles, bravery and betrayal.
ZULULAND’S HERITAGE ROUTE 66 Zululand’s Route 66 between GINGINDLOVU and UPHONGOLO - follows one of the oldest trade routes through Zululand. Settlers resident in Port Natal in the early 19th Century would set off in oxwagons on well-worn tracks and cross into Zululand at a drift very close to the present N2 bridge over the Thukela River. The merchandise their wagons carried, as they forded the Thukela River into Zululand, included cotton and lambswool blankets, calico cloth, brass and copper wire, and coloured glass beads. Other commodities such as pick handles were not uncommon, and sometimes a gun or some gunpowder might be smuggled in to enhance profits. During their trips which would last up to three months, the traders hunted and bartered and on their return journey, if all
THE ZULULAND BIRDING ROUTE The route has a spectacular 605 bird species and is a treasure trove of specials such as Green Barbet, Pel’s Fishing Owl, PinkThroated Twinspot, Neergard’s Sunbird and Palmnut Vulture. But this is just one part of a rich story. The Zululand Birding Route is much more than a convenient information and booking system - the Zululand Birding Route is a conservation programme, proving that birding can generate income for local communities - in this way, birding tourism adds real value to wild birds and habitats in which they occur; it provides a tangible reason to conserve natural habitats and the birds that occur in them. The Birding Route is helping create a new career path for young South Africans from disadvantaged communities through training as birding guides. went well, they would return to Port Natal with their wagons filled with ivory, buffalo and wildebeest skins, rhino horn, hippo teeth and hippo fat. Following in these same paths soon after them, in ever increasing numbers, were the missionaries, transport riders, then soldiers, colonial administrators, police, settlers and farmers. The wagon tracks have long since made way for a modern infrastructure but today’s visitors in their air-conditioned SUV’s, navigated by GPS, can still get a sense of how things used to be on Route 66. Many of its valleys once teeming with wild game, have been divided up into fertile farms but Zululand remains a place deeply rooted in its ancient traditions. BATTLEFIELDS
The Battlefields region offers picturesque landscapes with rolling plains, rocky hills, undulating valleys and a concentration of historical battle sites. Rock-strewn hills, fields littered with graveyards, and the remains of fortifications are memorials to the battles that took place over numerous years shaping both South African and British history. With more recorded battlefields than anywhere else in Africa, this is the place to discover another facet of the Zulu Kingdom’s past.

O’Neill’s Cottage, on the slopes of Majuba Mountain in Newcastle, is where the agreement between the British and Boer forces in 1881 was signed. This was to restore the Transvaal’s independence after the Battle of Majuba – both the battlefield of Majuba and the cottage are national monuments. 34 | www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN Oct-Nov 2015
Besides taking an organized tour, there are several self-drive routes established to enable you to visit these historic towns and sites. Knowledgeable, friendly and accredited local guides are available and guarantee hour upon hour of captivating company. The self-drive routes are King Shaka’s Way, Remembrance Route, Rifleman’s Road, Warrior’s Trek, Siege Salute and Red Soldier’s March. For those pressed for time, a visit to the Talana Museum in Dundee gives an overview of the battles of the region. An added attraction at this time of year is the extravaganza of Christmas lights throughout the grounds as well as the period-decorated Christmas trees in a number of the museum exhibits. For those more interested in the present, the Battlefields offers visitors a number of opportunities for adventure, from whitewater rafting and mountain biking, to less strenuous activities like game viewing and golf. A number of towns in the region have nature on their doorsteps – Vryheid has the Vryheid Hill Nature Reserve, which is home to
a number of endemic bird species, including the blue cane, ground woodpecker and olive bushshrike. In addition to great birding and incredible scenery, the Reserve offers a oneday hiking trail that passes several gun points dating back to the Anglo-Boer War. Don’t miss the chance of ‘ticking’ one of the nearly 400 species of bird that have been identified along the Amajuba Birding Meander. For a battlefield of a different kind, visit the Klempenfeldt vulture restaurant situated near Vryheid and an easy addition to a Battlefields tour of Rorke’s Drift or Fugitive’s Drift.

UMZINYATHI
Rich in history, culture & striking beauty
UMZINYATHI IS A HISTORICALLY RICH REGION, RENOWNED FOR ITS NATURAL BEAUTY. THE DISTRICT IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST KWAZULU-NATAL, BORDERED BY THE MIDLANDS IN THE WEST, THE DRAKENSBERG IN THE NORTH, AND ZULULAND TO THE EAST. The Umzinyathi region bears memories of the wars that swept across South Africa between 1879 and 1902, but its history starts long before this. The legendary King Shaka and the Zulu nation created upheaval among local tribes, the Voortrekkers crossed the mountains to settle on the land, while the British colonists had settled at what was known as ‘Port Natal’, now Durban. What followed was an era of war, as the Zulus, Voortrekkers and British clashed in some of the bloodiest battles in the history of South Africa, shaping the towns and villages of this region. The wars were fought over land and sovereignty, and played out over almost 100 years. Today people travel from around the world to revisit these momentous events in our history.

Rorke’s Drift Rorke’s Drift, located 45 kilometres southeast of Dundee, is the site of one of the most famous battles of the Anglo-Zulu War. It is a tranquil village nestled at the foot of a rocky outcrop, a few kilometres from the Mzinyathi River. At the entrance to the village is a traditional Zulu umuzi (village), with beehive huts encircling an Nguni cattle kraal. (main photo pictured above). The umuzi offers visitors the chance to truly experience traditional Zulu lifestyle; be captivated by the pure energy of Zulu dancers, milk an Nguni cow, taste home-brewed Zulu beer and sleep the night in a beehive hut. Further into the village is the Rorke’s Drift Battlefield and Museum, which has attracted much acclaim for its displays of the Anglo-Zulu War.

NEWCASTLE WILL HOST THE NATIONAL HOT AIR BALLOON CHAMPIONSHIPS ONCE AGAIN This year, the 36th annual championships return to our town from 7 to 10 October, with competitions every morning and afternoon. This event is a highlight on the South African aviation calendar. “The only difference between this event and an air show is that with balloons, pilots use only the wind to steer their craft. Creative thinking on how to manoeuvre balloons in the sky is necessary,” explained Johan Pieters of Champ Marketing. He said balloons use approximately 45 kilogrammes of propane gas per flight. September - December 2015 CULTURAL DIVERSITY of Umzansi MUSEUMS TOURISM PASSPORT Newcastle Majuba District Prize giving 16 October.
Organisers are expecting more than 12 balloons to brighten the skies, and they will perform a special flight in Madadeni, bringing the sport to the community.
2-3 October 2015 CRAFT ART FAIR at Carnegie Art Gallery Local artists are invited to participate.
“The public can look forward to being awoken by the sound of balloons hanging in the sky, some almost in their backyards if they are lucky.” Kwêla will attend the proceedings, filming for KykNET (channel 144).

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
NORTH COAST KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is an unspoilt natural environment with a lush subtropical coastline and warm waters, stretching northwards from Zimbali to the mighty Thukela River. This is the playground of bottlenose dolphins, which frolic in the waters close to shore and are visible all year round. The shoreline offers a perfect combination of golden beaches and sheltered coves for definitive beach pleasure – sun, surf, fishing, horseback beach rides or snorkelling. Or just enjoy them all.
For more info check out the website www.dolphincoast.kzn.org.za
Did you know?
Tongaat is also the oldest Indian community in South Africa. During the 1860s indentured Indian labourers arrived to work in the sugar plantations. The town is now one of the largest sugar-producing districts in the world, and Hindu temples Vishwaroop and Juggernath Puri are testament to their having made Tongaat their home. Sample some of their culinary delights, including pineapple-on-a-stick covered with tangy spices.
One natural highlight in the region at this time of year is the arrival of the European Barn Swallows. It is an incredible sight to witness up to 3 million of these tiny migratory birds from the special viewing site in Mount Moreland as they gather together in the skies above the reed beds about half an hour before sunset, flying in their vast numbers over the wetlands. An opportunistic Bat Hawk or Sooty Falcon may even be spotted swooping in for a quick bite during the evening display! As dusk falls, the swallows suddenly drop into the reed-beds and disappear from sight. Discover exclusive lodges set within the coastal forest, five-star luxury, sublime spa experiences, golfing, and adventure. A number of small towns and villages dot this developing coastline, each with its own special offering. Just beyond Umhlanga is the popular seaside village of Umdloti. It offers easily accessible beaches, lovely rock pools, great snorkelling and safe bathing areas. Ballito dates back to 1953, when a group of entrepreneurs began investigating land to develop and is now a rapidly developing resort town with a wide choice of restaurants, entertainment and shopping
opportunities. Shaka’s Rock lies north of Ballito, and it is famous in cultural history as the place from which Shaka ordered his warriors to leap from a cliff, to prove their courage. Explore pristine estuaries and coastal forest at one of the many nature reserves. Adventurous activities abound, from quad biking through the sugar cane fields to taking a flip along the magnificent coastline by microlight. For kids, and the curious-minded, there are the crocodile and animal farms, or go pick your own strawberries on the Cappeny Estates farm. This playground is infused with the presence of the Zulu King and the pioneering spirit of the early European and Indian settlers – a kaleidoscope of culture, nature and adventure… so enjoy all that the Dolphin Coast has to offer.

DRAKENSBERG
The awe inspiring Drakensberg Mountains, just by virtue of topography, are an adventurer’s paradise and offers a wealth of outdoor activities to satisfy all fitness levels and age groups. This 243 000-hectare mountainous region, named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people, well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site and offers massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests, cascading waterfalls and mountain streams, as well as hiking paths that invite exploration.
For more info check out the website www.drakensberg.kzn.org.za And there is no better way to get up close to these majestic mountains than from the air…. venture up in a hot air balloon and be carried by thermals like the resident Lammergeyers (Bearded Vultures). Watch the early morning sun light up the spectacular Amphitheatre, and catch sight of the Uthukela River as it plunges some 950 metres over the edge of the Mont-auxSources plateau in spectacular fashion.
Did you know?
A new vulture hide and feeding site recently opened at Cathedral Peak in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, and is likely to attract the endangered Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier). This is in addition to the renowned vulture restaurant in the Giant’s Castle Game Reserve and the one located near the Drakensberg Sun hotel.
Or glide above the Champagne Valley with expansive views that include Giants Castle and the Njesuthi Valley – look out for the Champagne Castle peak’, said to be named when two intrepid mountaineers, about to celebrate their long climb by popping a bottle of champagne, dropped the bottle on a rock. Hiking offers closer inspection of this spectacular mountain range. There are a large number of marked trails throughout the region - from short ambles through indigenous fern forests, to more strenuous full day hikes traversing rivers and hillsides, and full-on mountaineering and adventuring. Be well prepared as temperatures can plummet at higher altitudes, and although
accidents are rare, be sure to complete the Mountain Rescue Register available at every entry point. Part of each entry fee goes towards the invaluable emergency search and rescue service provided by volunteers of the Mountain Club of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Section. Be sure to look out for vultures as they fly overhead, spiralling effortlessly catching the thermals or visit one of the vulture restaurants in the Drakensberg, and get a closer look as they settle down on a carcass to squabble over the pickings. Seek out ancient Bushman rock art, evidence of the San people who lived in the area long time ago. Wind your way up the highest pass-road in South Africa up Sani Pass to the border with Lesotho – some 2 874 metres above sea-level.

Located within the Elephant Coast region is the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, which, together with Mozambique, has been protecting Africa’s first transfrontier marine conservation area since 2009. It is an unspoilt area blessed with dense evergreen forests, lush ferns and wild orchids, wild date and Lala palms, swamp forests, mountainous sand dunes, thick coastal forest, and pristine beaches, as well as lakes and ocean.

A whale’s tail is like a human’s fingerprint, enabling easy identification of the whale from the specific markings under the tail. Over the last 10 years of operating, skipper and specialised marine mammal guide, Danie Bennett, has been photographing the Humpback Whales, and there is a possibility that he has the largest collection of photographed Humpback Whale tails in the world.
Whale watching is popular between the months of May and November, when humpback whales make their way north from their Antarctic feeding grounds, heading for the sea channels between Mozambique and Madagascar. Here they give birth to their calves in bathwater-warm temperatures, only leaving when the babies have developed enough thick blubber to withstand the icy temperatures down south. On their way there and back, they stream past the KwaZuluNatal coastline. Enjoy a trip into these biodiversity-rich waters of the Indian Ocean with St Lucia Tours and Charters, the only operator in KwaZulu-Natal with a licence to take people out humpback whale watching. You might also spot turtles, whale sharks, dolphins, marlin and unusual pelagic birds. Another fun activity is a cruise up and down the St Lucia estuary where you’ll almost certainly spot hippos and crocodiles, admire the mangrove trees, see iridescent malachite kingfishers hawking for tiny tilapia fish, and almost certainly hear the wild call of
an African fish eagle. Fishermen will enjoy a spot of deep-sea fishing, with dorado, barracuda, tuna and snoek all a possibility – should you catch a marlin or sailfish be sure to tag-and-release as is the practice with St Lucia Tours and Charters. Activities in the Eastern Shores area include swimming and snorkelling on Cape Vidal beach, and exploring the rocky shores of Mission Rocks at low tide. A game drive into the Western Shores area of Lake St Lucia offers a great opportunity to see elephant and giraffe (including young ones at this time of year). The uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is renowned for its game-viewing hides and often offers great sightings of African wild dog.
