Pineville Junction is situated on the corner of Stapleton and Josiah Gumede (Old Main) Roads, opposite Sandy Centre. Owned by Ethekwini Council, it was originally the brainchild of a group of enthusiasts wanting to preserve some of the Pinetown history. It is a beautiful little village complex complete with village green and little chapel. Most of the houses have been recreated and are not authentic; however, there are one or two relocated authentic houses. The little chapel is the home of The Rock Ministries and is an ideal venue for small, intimate weddings. The centre houses small businesses, including those advertising in this feature. Pam, the owner of Vegas Sports Bar and Restaurant, is keen to organize markets within the centre on a regular basis for the benefit of both tenants and the local community. There is plenty of free parking to accommodate visitors. In the meantime, pop into Vegas for a scrumptious meal or a cooling drink at the bar.

Candle Comfort was started in the late 1990â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s after a gap in the market was noticed for good quality hand poured scented candles. Citronella and vanilla fast became top sellers. In 2013 Roger and Tanya Warren bought Candle Comfort and introduced a new range of glass jar and tumbler candles, as well as new fragrances to come alongside the plastic tub candles being sold in the Spar supermarkets in KZN. Candles are sold at discounted prices from the factory in Pineville Junction. The factory shop is open Monday to Friday. Only cash accepted. At Number 9 Pineville Junction you will find the ALEJEN7 training and recruitment Center. Here domestic staff go through a vigorous three day course and a month of practical lessons, before becoming permanent ALEJEN7 employees. Staff are recruited to work in restaurants, hotels, offices, homes and even in ships! RECREATION NEW GERMANY NATURE RESERVE Set high in the scenic hills and valleys of New Germany and bordering on both Westville and Pinetown lies this well preserved wilderness mosaic of forests, bushclumps and grasslands. The reserve is well known among nature lovers for its masses of wild flowers during spring, its high bird population and a wonderfully diverse tree composition. The 110ha reserve was officially opened to the public in August 1986 and is managed on the basis of intensive research. A Ranger and a number of guards live in the Reserve and the area is patrolled regularly to prevent poaching. LET’S WALK! Two major self-guided trails may be walked in the reserve. They have been carefully set out with both young and old in mind. Following the contour lines which means no climbing is involved. For school parties and those who prefer to walk with a guide, walks may be arranged by calling the numbers provided. IMBALI TRAIL Imbali in Zulu means “flower”. This trail has earned its name because of the masses of spring wild flowers. AVIARY A leisurely walk through the aviary which houses at least 60 species of indigenous birds is one of the main attractions of the Reserve. 100 hectares of coastal forest and remnant grasslands with the Umbilo River running through the length of the reserve. It forms a vital link in the chain of naturally managed areas along the stretch of the Umbilo River from Pinetown to Durban Bay. The valley boasts one of the national monuments to be found in Pinetown, namely The Umbilo Waterworks; these were destroyed in the floods of 1905. There are a number of walking trails to be followed that are graded according to their steepness. The WATERFALL TRAIL which is an easy walking trail and follows the Umbilo River with a viewing balcony overlooking the Umbilo Falls. DUIKER TRAIL is also easy. BUSHBUCK TRAIL is a mildsteep walk. DORMOUSE TRAIL which is an extremely steep trail which leads above the Umbilo Falls. Dassies abound in the many rocky areas and you may get a glimpse of a bushbuck or Blue Duiker. The Interpretive Centre and large pit braai area are available for hire and must be booked in advance but those wanting to have a picnic are free to use the amenities.

QUEENSBURGH In 1924 four residential townships in the area, Malvern, Escombe, Northdene and Mosely, combined to form the town of Malvern. During the year of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, Malvern received municipality status and changed its name to Queensburgh. Another area of Queensburgh is Northdene with

its delightful North Park Nature Reserve. This is a small yet beautiful protected area of coastal lowland forest right next to the Umhlatuzana River. Delightful paths have been carefully laid and one can wander past established ponds that are a haven for water birds, and spot the odd bushbuck, grey duiker or mongoose. Pinetown at a Glance

FLIK DAMP PROOFING has been curing damp and water problems since 1972. Are there any loose slates? Problems with the roof are a common cause of penetrating damp problems • Use extractor fans in the kitchen and bathrooms – rooms where there is a lot of steam • When using the kitchen or bathroom keep the doors shut and extractor fan on so that excessive moisture does not go into other parts of the house • Ensure washing machines and dryers are adequately plumbed in according to the manufacturers instructions. Envirotimbers is a KwaZulu-Natal based company started by husband and wife team Heidi and Alan Boyd in December 2012. The company sources local plastic waste and processes this waste into plastic timber planks which is used to manufacture recycled outdoor furniture, pallets, and signs. Heidi Boyd explains that plastic timber can be used in many of the applications that wood is usually used for since plastic timber behaves

like wood and can be shaped using conventional woodworking tools. Educating the next generation The Boyds are also passionate about educating the youth about recycling and together with a number of other organisations, conduct talks at schools to educate the children about recycling and other environmental issues. 2. 40 years of Master Maths! Master Maths has assisted generations of South Africans with Maths Tuition. In 2011, Master Science was launched to assist Grade 10s to 12s working through the South African curriculum. The programme consists of a computer-based teaching system, which is supported by our motivated tutors. This enables us to combine tried and tested teaching methods with new technology for teaching mathematics to Grade 4 to 12 learners, as well as physical science for Grade 10 to 12. Our learners are provided with a tuition system which caters to their individual needs. The new university brings together the rich histories of both the former Universities. The University of Durban-Westville was established in the 1960s as the University College for Indians on Salisbury Island in Durban Bay. Student numbers throughout the 1960s were low as a result of the Congress Alliances’ policy of shunning apartheid structures. This policy gave way in the 1980s to a strategy of “education under protest” which sought to transform apartheid institutions into sites of struggle. Student numbers grew rapidly and in 1971, the College was granted University status. The following year, the newly-named University of Durban-Westville moved into its modern campus in Westville and was a site of major anti-apartheid struggle. UDW became an autonomous institution in 1984, opening up to students of all races. Founded in 1910 as the Natal University College in Pietermaritzburg, the University of Natal was

granted independent University status in 1949 owing to its rapid growth in numbers, its wide range of courses and its achievements in and opportunities for research. By that time, the NUC was already a multi-campus institution, having been extended to Durban after World War 1. The distinctive Howard College building was opened in 1931, following a donation by Mr T B Davis, whose son Howard Davis was killed during the Battle of Somme in World War I. In 1946, the government approved a Faculty of Agriculture in Pietermaritzburg and, in 1947, a Medical School for African, Indian and Coloured students in Durban. The two KwaZulu-Natal universities were among the first batch of South African institutions to merge in 2004 in accordance with the government’s higher educational restructuring plans that will eventually see the number of higher educational institutions in South Africa reduced from 36 to 21. Confirmed by a Cabinet decision in December 2002, the mergers are the culmination of a wide-ranging consultative process on the restructuring of the Higher Education Sector that began in the early 1990s. The Kloof & Highway SPCA The demand for animal welfare services is growing year on year and the KLOOF AND HIGHWAY SPCA is no exception. With vast rural areas surrounding the Highway area our Society has a tremendous task to reach out to thousands of animals who have no access to veterinary services. The growing animal population and current economic crisis, places a huge amount of pressure on many animal owners, impacting on the welfare of animals within our communities. The Kloof & Highway SPCA, treats and cares for thousands of animals each year, investigates animal cruelty and neglect; promotes responsible pet ownership through its’ adoption process; holds regular sterilisation clinics in poverty stricken and rural areas and conducts education on the humane treatment of animals to promote compassion and respect for all living creatures. We do this for those animals who are most vulnerable in our society and for those who

The Frail Care Section of the Park relies heavily on donations to enable the high level of service to be maintained. It has been in exitence since 27/11/1963. The M.C.H. is a haven for 120 childern between the ages of 3 and 18 of diffrent cultures, creed and language. Malvern Children’s Home falls under the auspices of the Christian Social Services [KwaZulu-Natal]. The C.S.S. is registered with the department of social development as a N.P.O.with its own registration number; and also with the SARS in terms of section 18A of the tax act. The M.C.H.has its own constitution and management structure. The M.C.H. prides itself in good management and has a proven record of sound financial accountability.

ETHELBERT CHILDREN’S HOME A place of safety that has been caring and loving the children of South Africa since our inception in 1907. Ethelbert is not an orphanage, their ultimate aim is to see children happily reunited with their parents who have been rehabilitated. Social Workers work with the families, providing therapy and counselling to them to ensure that they also receive support to overcome the reasons why their child was removed from their care. In addition to supporting the families of the children in their care, Ethelbert Children’s Home takes a proactive approach in dealing with the severe breakdown in family and community values and the increasing number of poverty stricken families entering the social welfare system. Help is offered in nearby areas to build the capacity of women and youth, support parents to overcome abusive habits, find work and apply for social grants.
