The North Coast, with the seaside town of Ballito as its hub, is also known as the Dolphin Coast, and stretches from Zimbali in the south to the mighty Thukela River in the north. Vibrant coastal towns and charming villages along this seaside route offer pristine beaches and azure bays, where bottlenose dolphins frolic off shore all year round. Whales can also be spotted, from the shore as well as from boats. Its convenient location provides easy access to King Shaka International Airport, Durban, and the game reserves of Zululand and the Elephant Coast. A fascinating cultural mix exists in this region that was once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka, followed by subsequent waves of adventurers, colonialists, the French Mauritian sugar cane growers and indentured Indian labourers. For culture and history, visit sites such as the Ultimatum Tree, Ndondakusuka or Fort Pearson, or the burial place of the Zulu King, Shaka, at Kwa-Dukuza and Nobel laureate, Albert Luthuli, at Groutville. Explore the curious temples, sample spicy foodstuffs or shop for fresh produce at numerous markets, or walk a ‘muti’ (African medicine) trail through the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve. Tee off at some of the finest golf courses in the Southern Hemisphere, or enjoy a bird’s-eye view of this magnificent coastline from onboard a micro-light flight. Birding is excellent in the area, including sightings of the rare Palm Nut Vulture. Other outdoor adventures include mountain biking, horse riding, hiking, surfing, fishing and snorkelling in the many tidal pools along the coast. Excellent restaurants offer fine dining, and there is plenty of partying at local nightclubs. Accommodation is plentiful, with a variety of seaside hotels and resorts, boutique hotels, timeshare resorts, self-catering apartments, cottages, B&B facilities and caravan and campsites. This idyllic and popular coastline is a haven of unique and less-explored places, and stretches south from the Umkomaas River to Port Edward. Set amidst rolling hills fringed by palm fronds and wild strelitzias, the region is characterised by sun-kissed beaches, azure lagoons and friendly seaside villages. Popularly known as the ‘Golf Coast’, this scenic region has 10 courses situated in close proximity to or even at the beach. Ocean activities, however, remain the main attraction, with most of the local beaches enjoying international ‘Blue Flag’ status. Excellent deep-sea diving areas at Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks offer the opportunity of open water diving and shark cage diving. Every winter, there is the phenomenon of the Sardine Run - when millions of sardines migrate up the coast, accompanied by dolphins, other large predators and thousands of sea birds which feed on them. Depending on the temperature of the ocean and a few other factors, shoals of sardines have even come onto the beaches, to be scooped up by eager beach goers in every possible container. Andrenaline junkies can jump off Oribi Gorge with the highest swing in the world, abseil down the Gorge or go white water rafting on the Umzimkulu river. Somewhat less scary but equally fascinating is a visit the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, which conserves plants found nowhere else in the world, or go birding - 400 bird species have been spotted along this coastline. Shops and farm-stalls along the road offer a feast of locally produced wares such as nuts, freshly ground coffee, fruit, candles and a wide variety of handmade crafts. Accommodation on the South Coast is affordable, and ranges from up-market hotels, resort style hotels, boutique hotels, luxury B&Bs and guest houses, to self-catering apartments, chalets, caravan and camping facilities. The Battlefields region of KwaZulu-Natal has more recorded battlefields located here than anywhere else in Africa. The region offers visitors the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of famous military strategists like Shaka, Winston Churchill and General Louis Botha, all of whom played an integral part in shaping the history of KwaZulu-Natal. People from around the world are drawn to explore the battle sites, historic towns, national monuments, memorial sites and museums, in the company of accredited guides. These knowledgeable raconteurs bring history to life with captivating narratives about the Battles of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, Spioenkop and Blood River, to name a few. One can almost hear the winds sigh and whisper the secrets and sorrows of great battles fought here in days gone by. The Talana Museum near Dundee, with its fine collection of war artefacts, is well worth a visit, as is the Carnegie Art Gallery where contemporary South African art works can be viewed, and local craftwork and the unique Isiphethu fabric art is available. Visitors to the Talana Creative Cluster are able to interact with crafters and experience weaving, beading, pottery and sewing that reflects African traditions and heritage. At the Kwakunje Cultural Village, visitors are invited to experience Zulu cultural life as it was, and how it is changing. Hear the tales, explore the culture and enjoy traditional meals, as you absorb the sounds and sights of life under the African sun. Adventure activities in the area include white-water rafting, 4x4 trails, hang-gliding, horse riding and mountain biking. More relaxed past times include the birding routes, viewing the Big 5 in world-class game reserves, wallowing in warm mineral fountains or fly fishing in any of the numerous dams around the area. The Drakensberg Mountains are part of the 243 000 hectare uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, which was added to the World Heritage Site list in 2000. The Zulu name, uKhahlamba, meaning ‘barrier of spears’, aptly describes this awe inspiring region. Registered tourist guides will help you find examples of the ancient Bushman rock art of the San people who lived in the area thousands of years ago. These paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures, with some 20 000 individual rock paintings having been recorded at different caves and overhang sites. This area of seasonally snow-capped peaks is divided into three regions, southern, central and northern Drakensberg, and is a mecca for outdoor activities and the adventurous. The Northern Drakensberg is home to the spectacular Amphitheatre and the source of the uThukela River. This river plunges 948 metres over the edge of the Mont-aux-Sources Plateau as the uThukela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world. Feel the adrenalin rush provided by sheer rock or ice climbing, abseiling, canopy tours, white water rafting, helicopter rides and 4x4 excursions up Sani Pass - the highest pass-road in South Africa. Or experience the awesome Drakensberg on horseback, from hour-long rides to a three-day expedition into Lesotho. Hiking or leisurely walks along the many routes on both the lower and upper slopes of the Drakensberg will yield sightings of up to 290 species of birds, 48 species of mammals and rare varieties of plant life found in the park. Or simply relax on the verandahs of one of the many welcoming accommodation facilities in the region, cocktail in hand, as you soak up the magnificent views of the mountains. The Mnweni Cultural Centre offers visitors a glimpse of local culture, hand crafted goods and medicinal plants. Visitors will be spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation, with the selection ranging from luxury lodges and boutique hotels, to picturesque guesthouses and rustic self-catering chalets, all with the magnificent mountains as their backdrop. Zululand offers the best of two worlds - an idyllic coastline with the opportunity for ocean activities including whale watching, and a wilderness area that stretches inland with endless rolling hills, meandering valleys and grassy plains teeming with wildlife. The fascinating culture of the Zulu people, rich in tradition and symbolism, is visibly evident in this captivating region, where King Shaka once forged the mighty Zulu nation. Travel to historic battle sites in Ulundi, or visit the remarkable Emakhosini Valley, where several Zulu kings lie buried. Experience traditional Zulu hospitality and customs by attending a ruralwedding ceremony, or watching as a sangoma (traditional healer) communes with the spirits. Book a township tour that takes in local taverns (shebeens) for a local cuisine experience, and traditional medicineshops filled with curiosities. Zululand has many private and provincial game reserves. The HluhluweiMfolozi Park is home to many species of antelope and a large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, as well as predators such as the lion, cheetah and elusive leopard. The Ithala Game Reserve, situated outside Louwsburg in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, offers an abundance of diverse wildlife, adventure trails, open-vehicle game drives and guided walks, where one may encounter elephant, white and black rhino, leopard, giraffe, kudu, tsessebe, waterbuck and eland. Birding enthusiasts can view over 400 species on the Zululand Birding Route, or wander along a remarkable canopy walkway in the Dlinza Forest near Eshowe. Other attractions include therapeutic sulphur springs at Paulpietersburg, the historic Fort Nonqayi at Eshowe, and beautiful traditional craftwork, such as woven Ilala palm baskets & intricate beadwork. Richards Bay, the harbour city situated just two hours’ drive north of Durban, is a blend of industrial, eco- and cultural-tourism, and The Tuzi Gazi Waterfront offers a hotel as well as numerous shops, pubs, restaurants and walk-on moorings. Accommodation ranges from luxury game lodges, chic, tented safari lodges, self-catering bush chalets, friendly B&Bs and bush campsites. Stretching from the iMfolozi River in the south to the Mozambique border in the north, this region is widely known as one of South Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt areas. Home to an incredible 21 ecosystems - from dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery, thick coastal forest, mountainous sand dunes, and pristine beaches, to the African bushveld with its thorn trees and abundance of wildlife. The Elephant Coast incorporates world-class conservation areas including the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, and Africa’s oldest game reserve, the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, credited with saving the once-endangered white rhino from extinction. Home to many species of antelope, elephant, buffalo and giraffe, there are also predators such as the lion, cheetah and leopard. At the Ndumo Game Reserve and Tembe Elephant Park, elephants are the main attraction, while the Mkhuze Game Reserve boasts a variety of wildlife. There are also a number of private game reserves that offer unforgettable experiences with abundant wildlife, a wide range of activities and fabulous hospitality. Lake Jozini is the southernmost point in Africa where the ferocious tiger fish can be caught. Treat yourself to a houseboat experience on the lake, for something special. Kosi Bay Nature Reserve surrounds the rare and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system, and is a tropical paradise of clear waters, marshland, swamp, coastal forests and about 250 species of bird. The gateway to this unique and vast mosaic of habitats is the village of St. Lucia, a quaint town entirely within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Here, hippos have right of way, so careful how you drive at night. Visitors can enjoy sun, sea and bush attractions throughout the year, and choose from an amazing array of experiences. Boat cruises allow you to view hippos and crocodiles, ocean cruises let you catch sight of migrating whales and scuba diving on world class reefs at Sodwana give glimpses of a whole other world under the sea. Supervised viewing of nesting turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs is another possibility to add to your time in this fascinating region. Mountain trails, game drives, cultural excursions, walking trails, horseback safaris or canoe trips are even more options that are available on the Elephant Coast.
