SANIBONANI and Welcome to the Exceptional Zulu Kingdom

As we usher in the autumn season, we reflect on the great tourism milestones being reached in the Zulu Kingdom. One of these is our domestic marketing campaign “Do KZN” which has seen positive outcomes where our partnership with Kulula Holidays, resulting in more travellers opting to travel to KZN compared to the same time last year. We are confident that we are on the right track with the plans that we have to grow this market for KZN. We encourage everyone to be on the lookout for amazing packages and specials that we have put together on our website www.zulu.org.za, to ensure that holidaymakers truly have an exceptional holiday when they visit the Zulu Kingdom. The Durban KZN Convention Bureau continues to do a formidable job bidding and securing international meetings and exhibitions, which will ensure that our sector continues to grow and create much needed jobs for the people of KZN. We are confident that we will see more big conferences heading to the Zulu Kingdom after a very successful participation at Meetings Africa in February, where the team met with the continent’s business events representatives from local, regional and international associations, corporate, government and incentive business event buyers. On the international front, we remain committed to positioning KZN as a global destination. We recently hosted our first KZN Travel Academy, a two-day workshop, where big name tour operators like Thompson Tours, Springbok Atlas, FollowMe2Africa, Tourvest and Akilanga, to mention just a few, met with tourism product owners from all over KZN in our efforts to sell and package the province at international markets like the UK, Americas, India, Netherlands, China and East Africa. We also look forward to hosting Africa’s Travel Indaba once again, which brings

over 10 000 delegates and visitors from all over the world to KZN. Indaba is a critical platform for Tourism KZN, which we use to meet and engage directly with key players in the sector to broker deals, package and sell KZN in various markets. High on our list of Indaba activities is the launch of the KZN Mobile Application (APP), which ensures that our visitors and potential visitors have easier access to destination information, making planning their trip to and around KZN all the more faster. The APP is already available for free on Apple Store and Google Play. Furthermore, as the country celebrates the Mandela Centenary in 2018, we will use this year to highlight and package tours that take travellers on Mandela’s journey in the province. The Lilizela Tourism Awards are now officially open and we call on the tourism players in the province to take part in the programme, which honours those who have raised the bar in entrepreneurial and service excellence standards within the sector. We would like to increase the number of participants from the province this year. We are also thrilled about the announcement of the R35 Billion Durban Waterfront Development, which will include hotels, restaurants and tourist activities along the beach promenade. This will further unlock more tourism opportunities for the City and the Province. Don’t forget to share your special moments with in KZN on all our social media networks, Facebook (KZNTourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism), and remember to #DoKZN. TRADITIONAL CULTURAL EXPERIENCES ALBERT LUTHULI MUSUEM The Albert Luthuli Museum opened in 2004; it includes the original house that Luthuli stayed in 1927. The Museum represents the life of Albert Luthuli. The museum celebrates the life of the former winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Chief Albert Luthuli who was the President General of the ANC from 1952 until his death in 1967. Chief Albert Luthuli became the first African to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent stance in the fight for liberation.

This year, South Africa will mark the centenary of the life of our nation’s founding father Nelson Mandela under the theme: “Be the legacy”. The celebration is a major milestone in the incredible story of NELSON MANDELA and our nation’s journey. The centenary celebration will extend across the continent and the globe as the former President was one of the world’s most revered statesmen. He was a central figure in the struggle for liberation from the unjust apartheid system to an inclusive democracy. Nelson Mandela left an indelible mark on our society having laid the foundation for a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous society. His legacy lives on in our commitment to ensure a just and fair society for all, including the rights to dignity and freedom of expression. To celebrate Madiba’s life, we need to stay true to his ideals, including his unwavering commitment to justice, equality and a nonracial South Africa. All South Africans have a responsibility to promote freedom and defend our democracy in honour of Madiba’s life-long commitment to these ideals.

During his inauguration on 10 May 1994, Madiba outlined his vision for South Africa. He said: “We enter into a covenant that we shall build the society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity — a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.” The 100 year anniversary of his birth is an opportunity to recommit ourselves to his principles and building the nation we envisioned at the start of our democracy. The centenary will be marked with a year-long series of awareness, educational, celebratory and legacy commemoration events. It will build up to main centenary celebration on the 18 July 2018 which is former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

Chief Albert Luthuli was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia in 1898. Ten years later, his father passed away and he together with his mother returned to their family home in Groutville. As a bright and religious young man, Luthuli was passionate about education having being trained as a teacher in the former years. He strongly advocated that education should be equal and available to all Africans. In 1928, he was appointed secretary of the African Teacher’s Association and in 1933 became its president. Located in central KwaDukuza, the Museum is a must visit to everyone that wants to relive the history of Apartheid South Africa. With a multitude of different exhibits only viewable at the Museum, it is a once in a lifetime experience. It has been reported that Nelson Mandela was arrested on his way to Johannesburg after having met with Chief Albert Luthuli who was then the ANC president in Groutville. NELSON MANDELA CAPTURE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MADIBA Most of us are familiar with his imprisonment and anti-Apartheid work, but here are a few things you might not know about this inspiring leader. MANDELA’S PRISON NUMBER WAS 46664.

The Nelson Mandela Capture Site is a cultural and historical exhibition that is situated at the site at which Nelson Mandela was apprehended for his anti-Apartheid activism acts in August 1952. Mr Mandela had been travelling in disguise as the chauffeur of the car he drove, and was on the R103 road between Durban and Johannesburg. (Apartheid police had been hunting Nelson Mandela down for 17 months and, as he passed along this stretch of road, they were finally able to capture and arrest him. This marked one of the most significant moments in the history of the Apartheid era, as well as the future of this country. The sculpture at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site comprises 50 steel columns that are between six and 9.5 metres in height and cover a width of almost 30 metres. These

have been cut by laser to form an image of the former president when viewed at the correct angle. The columns line up so that, at a specific angle, they create what seems to be a two-dimensional image of Mr Mandela. So dramatic is the effect that it can be seen from 30 metres away. This monument is situated at the end of a winding path, which represents the long walk to freedom that he took towards his goal of political equality. Take the N3 highway to Durban / Johannesburg. Outside of Howick, take the Tweedie turnoff to Lions River. Turn right onto the R103. The sculpture is 5 minutes from the N3 turnoff and is well signposted. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site is open from Monday to Sunday, 09h00 to 16h00 Tel: 033 330 8195 | www.thecapturesite.co.za / www.sa-venues.com Institute is also the historical site where Nelson Mandela cast his vote in South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994.

It explores four major movements, which were to have an extraordinary effect on this stretch of the M25 – Gandhi’s movement of passive resistance (Satyagraha), John Dube’s Ohlange Institute for African boys (he was also the founder of the ANC), the Shembe church, and the Inanda Seminary, a mission secondary boarding school that catered exclusively for African girls. The Inanda Heritage trail starts at the Inanda township and takes visitors into the Ohlange Institute which was established by Rev. John Dube, who was the first president of the African National Congress. The Ohlange

The number indicates that he was the 466th prisoner of 1964. He embraced the number, making it the name of his HIV/AIDS awareness campaign and the name of a series of charity concerts. HE OVERCAME MANY PERSONAL TRAGEDIES He finally did get to marry for love in 1944, to Evelyn Mase, but their relationship was soon marred by tragedy. Their second child, Makaziwe, died at just nine months old. They had two other children: Madiba Thembekile (Thembi), who died in a car crash while Mandela was in prison in 1969, and Makgatho Lewanika, who died in 2005. Mandela had two other children with his second wife Winnie, 20 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. HIS FIRST NAME WASN’T ACTUALLY NELSON Mandela’s given name was Rolihlahla, which his schoolteachers were unable to pronounce. One of them started calling him Nelson after British admiral Horatio Nelson, and the name obviously stuck. Rolihlahla, by the way, means “pulling the branch of a tree.” HIS FELLOW CITIZENS GAVE HIM AN AFFECTIONATE NICKNAME South Africans commonly called Mandela “mkhulu” (grandfather), or Madiba, the Mandela family name for a respected elder.

SPOTLGHT ON ENTERTAINMENT Part of a trilogy of the only political plays written by Kente, it was written and last performed in 1973 before it was banned. Directed for The Playhouse Company by Duma Ndlovu, with choreography by Somizi Mhlongo, How Long features a powerhouse cast of SATV stars, including Thembi Mtshali, Phindile Gwala, Khaya Dladla, Mondli Makhoba, Nqobile Ndlovu, Mduduzi Nombela, Nokubonga Khuzwayo, Mlamli Ningiza and Lungelo Ndlovu. Great news for youngsters and their families in Durban this season! Entertainment phenomenon, PEPPA PIG – the global superstar amongst the family preschool set – makes her South African theatrical debut when Peppa Pig Live in South Africa! takes to the stage in The Playhouse Company’s Opera theatre from 20 to April 22, with shows at 10:00 am and 12:30 pm. With its delicious pay-off line, ‘More fun than a muddy puddle!’- Peppa Pig Live! is an action-packed rollicking show, based on the award-winning television series, especially designed to give young fans an unforgettable first live theatre experience. A fully immersive musical production features a dozen familiar and original songs, as well as an interactive sing-a-long, the live stage show will have fans laughing, cheering and dancing – just like Peppa! This one-of-a-kind stage show – with incredible life-sized puppets and beautifully costumed characters – brings Peppa Pig to life in a whole new way for South African audiences. Also at The Playhouse Company, fans can enjoy a feast of stand-up comedians in MZANSI COMEDY MAGIC in The Playhouse Drama theatre on 28 April.

The production boasts vibrant live musical backing by a 15 piece orchestra. Show times are 7pm Tuesday’s to Fridays, 2pm and 7pm Saturdays, and 2pm Sundays. Tickets range from R100 to R150. Booking for all shows at The Playhouse Company is through Computicket. Call 0861 915 8000 or book online at www. computicket.com. Alternatively all 031-369 9540 (office hours). Another feature on this year’s Playhouse Company New Stages roster is TOUCH MY BLOOD. Playing in The Grand Foyer from 16 to 20 May, this is a tale of a young man growing up in Hammersdale Township, just outside Durban. Through him we are taken back to the vibrant eighties – when every young man worth his salt had the Afro, the bell bottom trousers and platform shoes that went alongside a time of fear and madness, and the division (both political and radical) that shook that part of Durban. Touch My Blood allows you to heal; it rewinds the tape, allowing you to witness some of what happened in South Africa. You are not only left with anger, but shake your head and laugh.

And more exciting news of a different kind. The Playhouse Company is presenting Gibson Kent’s legendary musical play HOW LONG as a salute to Africa Month. Kente’s famous musical can be seen in the Playhouse Opera from 2 to 27 May. One of South Africa’s most ground-breaking theatre pieces, this landmark work was last seen 45 years ago. A melodramatic musical play with political undertones in Gibson Kente’s famous township theatre style, How Long is based on the death of Khulu, a helpless grandmother, through brutal police action under apartheid bureaucracy.

Launching its 2018 programme KickstArt Productions presents the award-winning new hit comedy, THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG at UKZN’s Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 6 to 29 April. Billed as ‘Choreographed Mayhem’ (Independent), the madcap production, which has been described as ‘Fawlty Towers meets Noises Off’,’ won every major award on the London stage following its 2012 world premiere. The play’s premise is an amateur dramatics

company is putting on a 1920’s murder mystery, The Murder at Haversham Manor, in a similar vein to the acclaimed The Mousetrap, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong…does! Even before the play starts, the audience sees the technical team doing last-minute adjustments to the set, including trying to mend a broken mantelpiece and to find a misplaced dog... The inexperienced, accident-prone luckless thespians battle against the odds to make it to their final curtain call with the set still standing, with hilarious consequences! The Play that Goes Wrong stars James Cunningham, Liesl Coppin, Bryan Hiles, Michael Gritten, Daisy Spencer, Mthokozisi Zulu, Iain Ewok Robinson and Adam Dorè. It is directed by Steven Stead and designed by Greg King. Tickets from R180. Booking is at Computicket.

Hot on the heels of The Play that Goes Wrong, is CAMELOT, also a KickstArt production. This plays at the Sneddon from 18 May. Lerner and Loewe’s classic musical, explores the enchanting and inspiring tales of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. It features evergreen hit songs like “If Ever I Would Leave You”, “How To Handle a Woman”, “It’s May” and “I Loved You Once in Silence,” Camelot stars Steven Stead as Arthur, Jessica Sole as his queen, Guinevere, and Lyle Buxton as Sir Lancelot. With sumptuous Game of Thrones-inspired costumes by Terrence Bray, atmospheric sets by Greg King and choreography by Janine Bennewith, this romantic and stirring musical will be an unmissable theatrical experience. Book now through Computicket. Finally, for information about the wealth of exciting shows due to run at the Rhumbelow Theatre’s venues in Kloof and Pietermaritzburg, visit https://therhumbelow. wordpress.com/blog/ or email roland@stansell.za.net.

The Outer West area of the city of Durban extends from Kloof inland and includes the beautiful Valley of 1000 Hills, up the winding and picturesque Botha’s Hill. Botha’s Hill, midway between the beaches of Durban and the KwaZuluNatal provincial capital Pietermaritzburg, enjoys the most commanding views on the coastal side of the Drakensberg. At about 800m above sea level, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the berg and the ships on the Indian Ocean. Overlooking the world-famous Valley of 1000 Hills with its living Zulu museum and many other cultural and natural attractions, Botha’s Hill is on the route of the Comrades Marathon and Dusi Canoe Race. Named after Carolina Botha who opened the first inn there in 1849 to cater to wagoners, Botha’s Hill has maintained this spirit of hospitality. Comfortable B&B guesthouses in Botha’s Hill also offer self-catering facilities, and there is a wellequipped backpackers’ lodge for the more adventurous. Shongweni Dam, Game Reserve and Polo Grounds are nearby, as are Inanda and Nagle Dams as well as Tala Game Reserve. A word of caution - if you want to stay in Botha’s Hill during the Comrades or Dusi races, book well ahead!

Beautiful Botha’s Hill has been home to the aptly named 1000 HILLS CHEF SCHOOL since 2004. The school delivers worldclass training in kitchens, not classrooms, to passionate young chefs serious about pursuing a culinary career. Dedicated to making students the best they can be, the school has a reputation for excellence and students have won many industry competitions. Graduates secure placements internationally and can be found in leading positions at South Africa’s top restaurants and hotels. A highlight of this practical approach to training is the on-site gourmet restaurant and bistro-style deli, where students prepare meals for guests. This sets the standard for their skill set – they must cook for paying customers, and deal with the pressures of a real-world environment. On the first Thursday of each month diners can enjoy a gourmet dinner of five courses, paired with wines. The Yes Chef Deli is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from February to midDecember for breakfasts, lunches and craft brewery tours. Well worth a visit! 26 www - WHAT, WHERE & WHEN April-May 2018

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

PIETERMARITZBURG

MIDLANDS

As the autumn leaves begin to fall and a crispness fills the evening air, thoughts of crackling fire places and hot chocolate come to mind. And there’s no place better for this than the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. This region, rich with lakes, dams and waterfalls, is a fly fisherman’s dream – add to that nature reserves and forests and you’re set for a variety of outdoor adventure activities. From trail running and hiking, to mountain biking, horse riding and paddling – you’ll find your chosen activity here. History buffs will enjoy exploring the charming city of Pietermaritzburg which was been visited by the likes of Gandhi, Mandela and Queen Victoria, take in the many heritage sites on a walk through the city’s historical centre and enjoy the architecture and history of the town. Don’t miss at the Old Prison, which dates back to Voortrekker times and has more than 150 years of history from colonialism and apartheid, to the liberation struggle and the dawn of South Africa’s democracy. The suffering of many people from the late 1860s through to the late 1980s is depicted in The Old Prison buildings – the National Monument building and the isolation cells are a ‘must see’ to give an idea of the torture and horror of imprisonment. Many well-known freedom fighters were held in this prison during the struggles in South Africa, including Nelson Mandela and Gandhi. Be sure to pop in to the Mandela Capture Site, located alongside the road near Howick, to view the remarkable sculpture that marks the place where former president, Nelson Mandela was captured. Alongside the sculpture is a temporary exhibition telling the story of Nelson Mandela’s journey from

comrade, leader, prisoner and negotiator to statesman. Pietermaritzburg, KZN’s capital city, shows off its agricultural roots with the much loved Royal Show, where livestock and agricultural equipment, blend seamlessly with lifestyle exhibitions, music concerts and a funfair (25 May – 3 June). Another favourite on the PMB calendar is Art in the Park, considered one of the biggest and most prestigious art events in South Africa (2 - 6 May). Held annually within the parklike grounds of the Sanbi KZN Botanical Garden, this event brings people of different walks of life together through mutual appreciation of art, and besides offering visitors the opportunity to rub shoulders with the artists, is an entertaining day out for the family in spectacular surroundings. An annual highlight for vintage car enthusiasts is the Sunday Tribune Cars in the Park (27 May). In addition to the cars trucks, tractors and other fascinating vehicles on display, visitors can browse the flea market, replenish their energy at a variety of food vendors or just relax at the beer garden and enjoy the entertainment provided by a live band.

DID YOU KNOW? When police flagged down the car driven by Nelson Mandela on the R103 near Howick, he was dressed as a chauffeur and insisted he was David Motsamayi. They, however, knew who he was and he was arrested on the spot. He had been on the run for 16 months and was returning from a secret meeting with ANC President, Chief Albert Luthuli. An impressive steel sculpture now marks this spot.

ART IN THE PARK 2-6 MAY 2018 Art in the Park is a premier outdoor artselling exhibition where artists exhibit and sell their works direct to the public and is part of a mix of events that Pietermaritzburg City is known for. It is in its 56th year of presentation and has transitioned from an event to a festival of note. Creative Arts College, an award winning specialist education institute is the main sponsor of Art in the Park and has committed to its development as an international calendar event. Whilst ‘fine art’ in the form of paintings remains the focal point of the festival the entire park will be occupied with other forms of art exhibitions from performing arts to digital arts, craft & production art, photography, kiddies theatre, food pavilion and many more exciting stalls and activities. It is not only a fantastic event to support due to its exciting nature, it is also one

that carries a strong positive objective of development and unification through arts. Art is indeed a vehicle that has the power to change opinions and break barriers.

Art in the park takes place from the 2nd to the 6th of May 2018 and is certainly going to be an event that mesmerizes and captivates its audiences.

The CEO of Creative Arts College, Mr Kevin Palium states that “Art is one of the highest forms of expression and communication. It is also a key instrument in creating a congruent multiracial, multicultural society.”

Show times are as follows:

Art in the park is an event that will stimulate the creative fraternity as it creates awareness around art and it creates a platform for artists to showcase and sell their works, allowing them to participate in the economy. Mr Dumisani Mhlongo of the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association is excited with the growth of the event and is proud to host the event at the illustrious KZN National Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg which offers a safe and secure venue.

SOUTH COAST There’s no doubt about it - visitors are spoilt for choice with what to do along the KwaZuluNatal South Coast, with its subtropical forests, blue lagoons, golden beaches, rocky coves, the warm Indian Ocean and sunny weather – this is what makes the South Coast such a popular destination. But have you ever wondered what lies beyond the beach? Further inland even, from the colourful rural scenes among the iconic green hills as witnessed from the comfort of your vehicle as you make your way down to the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Daily life flows at its own pace in this tranquil hinterland, where people and their stories provide the intermittent bursts of brightness, vibrancy and interest. Listen with interest as a local guide unlocks the secrets of the landscape and its inhabitants through a local guide and gain insight into the rich Zulu culture, its ceremonies and beliefs and even pick up a phrase or two in Zulu. But don’t expect to do typical. Rather do it your and their way combined as a great authentic cultural exchange –Zulu dancing, beading workshops, drumming demonstrations, sangoma readings, storytelling for the kids, traditional food and drink, refreshing stops at taverns, hikes up holy mountains, San cave paintings, shopping for handmade arts and crafts, overnighting in rural accommodation, scenic special events or picnics at waterfalls, where you’ll discover a different beach altogether. There are so many options there for you to explore and enjoy. These ‘Great Drives Out’ rural adventure experiences encourage responsible and authentic culture and heritage explorations

in scenic environments, fostering links between diverse cultures and between the popular KZN South Coast coastline and the lush hinterland, only a few minutes’ drive away. Another great way to experience this is on the back of a motorbike! Margate once again plays host to the annual South Coast Bike Fest where locals and visitors alike get to enjoy four days of extreme action sports and some of South Africa’s hottest music acts (27-30 April). Should the motorised version not appeal to you, the region abounds with mountain biking trails – make your way through farmlands and coffee plantations, open grasslands, and dense coastal forest, or participate in one of the epic mountain bike events that the region hosts. The two flagship international events are the joBerg2C (20-28 April) and sani2C (10-12 May), drawing riders from throughout South Africa and all over the world. Both events offer not only an epic ride for participants, but fun for the whole family as they support the riders on route and as they cross the finish line in Scottburgh.

DID YOU KNOW? The joBerg2c, at 910km, is the world’s longest stage mountain bike (MTB) race, and the sani2c, with around 4300 entrants in 2017 is the biggest MTB race in the world. Both these races are about the journey and not just the destination and raise funds to support communities along the route.

EXPERIENCE A GREAT DRIVE OUT The KwaNzimakwe Experience starts at the WowZulu Welcome Centre on the R69 Road between Mpenjati Nature Reserve and Ezinqoleni, above KwaNzimakwe “place of the Nzimakwe” Village. Here the local tribal leader will welcome you warmly. See a sangoma, or traditional healer, watch crafters and learn to weave, visit a cattle kraal and organic garden. Then follow a mountain trail past a Shembe Church to a site with spectacular views of the area. Nearby activities include community theatre at Msenti Art Academy, guided walking trails at Xhuluweshe Mountain and Nojani Tavern. With the Nyandezulu Experience, only 9km inland from Shelly Beach, see breathtaking scenery high above the sea, while enjoying the hospitality of the local community and discovering local arts and crafts. Start at Mfihlo Guest House for a 5-hour guided drive with a hike to the Ntantana Mountain, overlooking Nyandezulu Waterfall. Visit the sangoma and the local Dafeleni shebeen or tavern. Walk to a Shembe Church and the top of the holy uMdlungwana mountain, reputed to harbour a seven-headed water monster. Don’t make too much noise! At KwaXolo Caves, near the town of

Port Edward, go on a 5-minute hike to a newly discovered prehistoric cave with San paintings that are older than 100 000 years. These caves tell the story of the San in years of plenty, before the deserts they would later inhabit. Consider a 3- or 4-day guided Wild-South Coast Walk, which offers an authentic rural and coastal hiking experience starting on the KZN South Coast and ending on the Wild Coast, showcasing natural, cultural and heritage treasures along the way. Attractions include village experiences, 3 spectacular river gorges, ancient fossil beds and ship wrecks along pristine beaches, the Wild Coast’s striking red dunes and walks across high green hills above the sea, dotted with homesteads. Gain insight into the rich Zulu and Mpondo cultures of local communities. The 4-day walk starts at Ramsgate’s famous Waffle House and the 3-day hike at the top of the spectacular Umtamvuna River Gorge with its rich biodiversity, incl. 1 400 flowering plant species with 140 endemic. The hike is organised through WOWZULU, KZN’s leading community-based tour operator and offers a unique transprovincial walk.

ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast incorporates the best of both land and sea safari experiences with its world-class conservation areas that include the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, and Africa’s oldest game reserve, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Natural and cultural diversity abound in this narrow strip of land, approximately 200 kilometers long and just 70 kilometers wide, and home to an incredible 21 different ecosystems. This diversity included a range of habitats from dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery and thick coastal forest to mountainous sand dunes, pristine beaches and a healthy marine eco-system. Add to this the African bushveld with its thorn trees and abundance of wildlife, and you’ve got a destination offering a wealth of activities and experiences. There are dozens of game reserves, beautiful beaches, deep sea fishing and diving on a number of reefs, mountain trails, cultural activities and historical sites. The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, once credited with saving the once endangered white rhino, is home to many species of antelope as well as large populations of elephant, buffalo and giraffe, and predators such as the lion, cheetah, the elusive leopard and rhino – the rhino, both black and white, are however still under threat from poaching. There are also a number of private game reserves in the region that offer wildlife activities and experiences in addition to offering fabulous ‘bush wedding’ and conference facilities. The Kosi Bay Nature Reserve is an unspoiled area surrounding the rare and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system, the most pristine lake system on the South African coast. It is a tropical paradise of crystal clear water,

marshland, swamp and coastal forests that is home to about 250 species of bird, including the endemic Palmnut Vulture which feeds on the fruit of the Kosi palm (Raphia australis). The four lakes and their interconnecting channels, drain via a sandy estuary into the sea – the Kosi Mouth is home to ‘the aquarium’ due to the clarity of the water and abundance of fish species. The pristine beaches in the region are the nesting ground of sea turtles that come to shore from October and December to lay their eggs – hatching occurs between December and March and is a memorable sight that is closely monitored by resident researchers. The town of St Lucia, located on the shores of the St Lucia Estuary, is surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. With its lakes, lagoons, freshwater swamps and grasslands, the Isimangaliso Wetland Park supports more species of animal than many of the better known parks and deltas in Southern Africa. Whale watching is a popular activity, when from June to November the humpback whales migrate from their summer feeding grounds close to the poles, to warmer water for winter breeding. Other activities include game viewing, lake cruises, walking trails, horseback trails and canoe trips.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2001 President Nelson Mandela said ‘iSimangaliso must be the only place on the globe where the oldest land animal (the rhinoceros) and the world’s biggest terrestrial animal (the elephant) share an ecosystem with the world’s oldest fish (the coelacanth) and the world’s biggest marine mammal (the whale)’.

ZULULAND The Zululand region comprises the ‘Zululand Coast’ and the inland area generally referred to as the ‘Heart of the Zulu Kingdom’. The ‘Zululand Coast’s golden shores are gently caressed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, offering idyllic beaches and crystal clear waters. Stretching inland are endless rolling hills, meandering valleys, as well as grassy plains teaming with wildlife. Forest sanctuaries and misty mountain peaks create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility –interrupted only by a plethora of birdcalls. The fascinating culture of the Zulu people, rich in tradition and symbolism, is visibly evident in this captivating region. Not only is the ‘Zululand Coast’ gateway to some of KwaZulu-Natal’s finest game reserves, but it also offers excellent bird watching opportunities. The Umlalazi Nature Reserve and the Raphia Palm Monument in Mtunzini, as well as the nearby Ongoye Forest are popular. So are the Dlinza Forest and Aerial Boardwalk in Eshowe… be sure to hire a Birdlife SA local guide to make the most of each opportunity. The harbour city of Richards Bay is a fascinating blend of industrial-, ecoand cultural-tourism and offers all the implied delights of a beachfront mini-metropolis in the midst of this nature-lover’s dream. The Tuzi Gazi Waterfront is situated west of the beaches and offers accommodation as well as numerous shops, pubs, restaurants and walk-on moorings that add to the vibrant atmosphere – be sure to add a sunset harbour cruise to your itinerary! The ‘Heart of The Zulu Kingdom’ echoes the past in many ways and is a reminder of the

rich history of Zululand which has nurtured the growth and development of the Zulu nation. This land also witnessed one of the greatest challenges to the supremacy of the British Empire during the tragic but heroic days of the Anglo-Zulu War. But the ’Heart of the Zulu Kingdom’ is more than just a place. It is where the visitor to Zululand can feel its powerful presence in the people’s immense pride in their own heritage and culture... from the Seven Kings, who lie buried at the eMakhosini Ophathe Heritage Park, to the Big Five. There is an extensive network of nature reserves and game parks ensuring an abundance of flora and fauna to delight the visitor – from several hundred bird species, many species of antelope, hippo, cheetah, giraffe to the Big Five...lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. There are a number of luxury game lodges, chic tented safari camps, as well as self-catering accommodation, camping and homestays – often the most memorable of experiences.

DID YOU KNOW? Nongoma is Zululand’s Royal City, home of King Goodwill Zwelithini, the hereditary leader of the Zulu nation, and his royal palaces. It is also home to the traditional Mona Market, a hive of activity with people buying, selling and bartering everything from fresh vegetables and livestock to beadwork and beer pots.

25km and 10km and this year we have also included a fun trail run. It is held in 5 different areas of Zululand over a 6 month period.

Bell have once again generously sponsored our Series and we are so grateful to be associated with a proudly “made in Zululand” company.

The events are based in, organized by and benefit the communities in areas where the land use is predominantly sugar and forestry, which forms a significant part of Bell’s agricultural / forestry equipment sector.

The Big 5 MTB Series and Bell equipment company are a very good fit to enhance each other’s brands given the associated similarity between Bell products and the nature of and the environment in which MTB and trail running takes place. The Big 5 MTB Series is a Family orientated Series with 3 cycling distances of 50km,

The fundraising efforts from each area are used to support our community and in tribal areas by using local labour and supporting their projects like water tanks at school, maintain crèche infrastructure, provide shoes to schools and maintenance and upgrades to the local clubs.

It also promotes MTB locally and is accessible both in distance and financially to Zululanders of all age groups and abilities, it provides opportunities for local NPO to raise much needed funds through the provision of services during the event like: Rotary, Round Table, Moths and Woman’s fellowship groups. The Series also supports and sponsors 45 development riders and gives out as many free bicycles too. The other Series sponsors who have partnered us this year are: Wetland Water, Zululand Observer, Emprint, Cycle Junction and Falcon Express.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

BATTLEFIELDS The KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields boast the largest concentration of significant battles and warrelated sites in South Africa – with 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance. But if it’s more than history you’re looking for, the Battlefields region does not disappoint, with a wide variety of activities on offer. Adventure junkies will love white water rafting down the mighty Thukela, bird watchers will delight at the variety to be seen on the Amajuba Birding Meander and all will enjoy soaking away the stress in the soothing waters of the hot springs. There are several self-drive Battlefield Routes that enable visitors to optimise their visit to this region’s historic towns and sites. Knowledgeable, friendly and accredited local guides are available and guarantee hour upon hour of captivating company. Be sure to include the Blood River Battlefield and the Ncome Zulu Cultural Museum, commemorating this 1838 battle between Voortrekker and Zulu, the Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift Battlefields to pay tribute to both the Zulu and British soldiers who lost their lives on that fateful day in 1879 during the Anglo Zulu War, and the Talana Battlefield and Museum in Dundee for an overview of the Anglo Boer War in 1899. Visitors will encounter fabulous scenery, generous hospitality, and tales of great courage and endurance. These routes include options such as world-class game reserves, such as also the ‘big five’ Nambiti Private Game Reserve near Ladysmith; heritage sites, battlefields and Zulu culture and tradition. There are numerous activities for the adventurous: including white-water rafting down the rapids of the mighty Thukela, or kloofing, if the river level is low,

hiking or mountain-biking in the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains, or even horseback riding in the hoof prints of Victorian soldiers. Other more relaxed corporate pursuits include a round of golf on one of the 9- or 18-hole courses, or trout fishing in the cool waters near Newcastle. At the Carnegie Art Gallery in Newcastle, contemporary South African art works can be viewed and a well-stocked shop with local craftwork is available. At Kwakunje, at the Talana Museum in Dundee, visitors are invited to experience Zulu cultural life as it was and see how it is changing. They are able to interact with the crafters, guides and storytellers and are soon steeped in the mystique of the traditional way of life and how it has adapted over time to meet the demands of outside and progressive forces. Both Thukela Ferry and Pomeroy produce fine arts and crafts. On the mountainside overlooking the breathtaking precipice of the Thukela Valley is the KwaKopi Curio Shop and community art and crafts centre that has an array of traditional beadwork, pottery and woven grass products, and includes a workshop area for local artists.

DID YOU KNOW? The Talana Museum is situated on the site of the first battle of the South African War (also known as the AngloBoer War), fought on 20 October 1899, and it was here that the British army wore khaki uniforms for the first time. This war lasted from 1899-1902, and losses totalled about 22,000 British, 4,000 Boers, plus more than 26,000 civilians who died from disease in British concentration camps.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN

NORTH COAST Just north of Durban and a stone’s throw from the King Shaka International Airport is the Zulu Kingdom’s North Coast, also known as the Dolphin Coast. This region offers luxury, beauty, sport and history – an unspoilt natural environment with a lush tropical coastline and the warm Indian Ocean. It is a malaria-free region of infinite beaches and gentle rolling hills covered in sugar cane, a place to indulge the senses – with sublime spas, great restaurants and a buzzing nightlife.

Explore the pristine estuaries and coastal forest at one of the many nature reserves, play a round of golf at one of the regions championship golf courses or seek out one of the many adventure activities on offer in the region. Experience a breath-taking off-road ride on a quad, or mountain bike – venture through sugar cane fields, along scenic rivers and magnificent cliff faces, into muddy areas, over log bridges, narrow bush paths and up rocky hill climbs. Feel the wind in your hair as you canter along the beach on horse-back, or the thrill of getting a birdseye view of the coast from a microlight. Take a boat trip for some off-shore angling and perhaps have an encounter with dolphins - the namesake of this, the Dolphin Coast. Here the rocky shores and tidal pools offer an underwater life that is often only seen by those donning wetsuits and scuba gear. This region is home to what is possibly the southern-most shallow water coral on the planet thereby offering snorkelers the opportunity of seeing Moray Eels, damselfish, butterfly fish, parrotfish and a

variety of coral species with relative ease. For kids and the curious-minded, there are the reptile and animal farms. A number of small towns and villages dot this coastline each with its own special offering... be sure to check out the visiting Barn Swallows at Mount Moreland, the natural paradise of the Zinkwazi lagoon and the Umhlali Museum with its historical memorabilia, including an old locomotive used to carry sugar cane to the local mill. Immerse yourself in history at the Luthuli Museum and visit the burial place of Shaka the great Zulu King, at KwaDukuza. And a visit to Tongaat, the oldest Indian community in South Africa, will have you sampling some fabulous culinary delights and shopping up a storm for fabulous saris. The KZN North Coast is certainly a multicultural infusion of traditional Zulu history and the pioneering spirit of the early European and Indian settlers – a kaleidoscope of culture, nature and adventure… with a little romance on the side.

DID YOU KNOW? Both Chief Albert Luthuli and Nelson Mandela were recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize; both were principled politically and were outstanding leaders, and both propagated reconciliation and nation-building. Be sure to catch the current exhibit: ‘In Conversation: Chief Albert Luthuli and Rholihlanhla Nelson Mandela’ at the Luthuli Museum.

UKHAHLAMBA

DRAKENSBERG

The Drakensberg is an awe-inspiring range of mountains forming the natural border between Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal. Named ‘Ukhahlamba’ by the Zulu people, this 243 000 hectare mountainous region well deserves its international status as a World Heritage Site and offers massive cliffs towering over riverine bush, lush evergreen forests, cascading waterfalls and mountain streams, as well as hiking trails that cater for hikers of varying fitness levels. This region attracts nature lovers, hikers, day wanderers, adventurers and mountaineers alike, all wanting to set their foot on the mountain, conquer its challenges, revel in its beauty and admire the awesome views. Others may just want to laze on a rock, dangling their feet in the cool waters of a Berg stream, and contemplate the wonders of the place. In addition to mountain peaks there are vast expanses of grassland, secluded valleys, streams, rivers and indigenous forests. One such forest is found in the Marutswa Nature Reserve just outside the little village of Bulwer. The Marutswa forest is home to the rare Cape parrot and is filled with rare yellowwood trees, moss clad rocks, monkey ropes and entangled tree branches and roots. The Marutswa Forest Trail and Boardwalk is testament to the successful cooperation of local people with business and wildlife organisations – this has resulted in it being described by some of South Africa’s top birding tour operators as one of the most active cloud forests in KZN. Another favourite for hikers and adventurers is the Cathedral Peak area. Here you can drive by 4x4 up Mike’s Pass to the top of the

Little Berg, bringing you much closer to the escarpment and to the starting point of hiking routes to the renowned Ndedema Gorge, the Organ Pipes Pass and the escarpment. For those of ‘average’ fitness, the Amphitheatre Slackpacking Trail is a three-day adventure that offers the opportunity of reaching the summit to view the uThukela Falls, spending three nights in lodges along the way. Royal Natal National Park is ideal for hiking, catering for all levels of fitness and agility with a superb network of graded walks. For the adventurous, the summit of Mont-auxSources can be reached by walking from the summit plateau and scaling a 100-rung chain ladder. Although accidents are rare, remember to complete the Mountain Rescue Register before you set off, even for a day walk or just a few hours. There are a number of accommodation options that caters for all tastes and budgets... from luxury resorts and hotels to guest- houses, B&B establishments, caravan parks and cabins – and for those searching for an ‘out in the wild’ experience, rustic huts and listed caves await.

DID YOU KNOW? The Marutswa Forest Boardwalk is built on an old logging area harvested in the late 19th century and is named after a local Zulu man called ‘Mahustjwa’ who harvested Sneezewood trees which he sold and were used to build railway sleepers. Part of the trail follows the old logging route that was used by the oxen and mules to drag timber destined for sale in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
