We pride ourselves on being the leading province for domestic tourism in the country and it is our vast array of tourism attractions, headed by our wonderful warm and safe beaches, that makes KwaZulu-Natal such a perfect holiday spot. We know that our visitors return again and again and that makes us proud. We at Tourism KZN continue to work hard to attract domestic and international tourists to the province, and once here, there is plenty for our families and visitors to do in the Zulu Kingdom. If it’s action you like, then head southwards this April, where extreme two-wheeled action is on the programme at the South Coast Bike Fest (#SCBF19) powered by Gearhouse Full Throttle Entertainment Zone. This promises to be the biggest motorcycle and music festival-presented by Ugu South Coast Tourism-in Margate from April 26-28. Also planned for Margate Beach is the Bioplus Easter Fever (aerobics, Zumba classes, beach volleyball, cricket, touch rugby and soccer) from April 19-22. If you have a fascination for snakes, make a plan to go to the Crocworld Conservation Centre near Scottburgh where renowned snake catcher Nick Evans will be giving the monthly environmental lecture on his many reptile encounters, which includes the greatly feared and misunderstood black mamba. His lecture (R50) is on Saturday, April 13 (bookings can be made via the centre on 039 976 1103). Families looking for a fun, entertaining day out can’t go wrong with a visit to the award-winning uShaka Marine World in Durban and if you are into photography, a trip up the cable car at the landmark Moses Mabhida Stadium offers great views of the city. Dare-devil fun-seekers can also freefall 80m over the stadium on the Big Rush Big Swing-the world’s tallest swing-swooping out in a 220m arc over the iconic venue. It’s definitely something to brag about. If you also try to do something worthwhile to mark Freedom Month, why not check out the

fascinating KwaMuhle Museum in Durban? We are also looking forward to the annual Africa Travel Indaba in Durban at the beginning of May. Some 7 000 delegates-exhibitors, international buyers and the media-have already registered, and these figures are an increase on last year, which bodes well for the region, the country and the continent. The buyers fly to see what KZN, the country and other African countries have to offer in the way of holidays and experiences for their clients’ holidays. We believe that this will result in major deals with a number of our local and international partners, that will see even more tourists coming to KZN in the years to come. We have also just hosted dozens of tour operators and travel agents-many of them with high-profile companies-from across South Africa and the continent who have customers around the world. And we have been to a massive tourism trade show-the ITB-in Berlin, Germany. This is all invaluable behind-the-scenes work in this competitive tourism industry. Encouraging tourists to come to our province boosts our economy and sustains thousands of jobs. Of course, being the leading sporting destination in the country, we are also looking forward to welcoming the thousands of dedicated runnersand their many supporters-to the Comrades Marathon in June, which this year is an uphill run. Entries will open for the annual Lilizela Tourism Awards on April 1 and as always, we urge KwaZulu-Natal tourism and hospitality businesses to try their luck. We were proud of last year’s worthy provincial winners-and were delighted when 10 of them went on to win national honours. We have some wonderful establishments around the province which we know could also do well in this annual competition. As always, don’t forget to have a memorable holiday in our province-and don’t forget to share your special moments in KZN on our social media networks. Facebook (KZN Tourism), Instagram (@tourismkzn_official), Twitter (@Tourism KZN), YouTube (KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority) and Pintrest (KZN Tourism) and remember to #DoKZN.

THULA THULA VOLUNTEERS ACADEMY DO YOU LIKE THE BUSH? YOU ARE FAN OF CONSERVATION? You would like to learn more about nature? And you want to “get your hands dirty” and make the difference? Your aim is to give something back to conservation? Then we welcome you to the Thula Thula Volunteers Academy! The home of the Elephant Whisperer and An Elephant in My Kitchen, paradise to the most unique elephant family, two hand-raised orphaned rhinos, an abundance of antelope, giraffe, hyena, a hippo family, many other animals and a vast array of birds. Yet it is a paradise under threat. Poachers have declared war onto the African wildlife, be it for the “pot” or to harm our rhino to murder them for their horns and ill-believe. Invasive plants and species need to be cleared as they threaten indigenous plants. And our local communities need to be educated about the importance of conservation, and at times simply need a hand from us in their day to day lives. At the Thula Thula Volunteer Academy you slip into the role of an Assistant Conservation Manager and assist our dedicated and passionate rangers with every role in African conservation and nature preservation.
This bestselling book is available in all bookstores in SA. KwaZulu-Natal, fondly known as the Zulu Kingdom, is arguably South Africa’s most diverse province offering a variety of cultures, scenery, attractions and experiences, including two World Heritage Sights. The traditions of Zulu, Indian, European and African cultures, spectacular mountain peaks, expansive golden beaches and exciting wildlife experiences make KwaZulu-Natal an ideal destination for a memorable luxury experience.
Luxury Spa @Fordoun
The Zulu Kingdom invites exploration and evokes a sense of the distant past with Zulu warriors and mighty Kings, and its recent history of struggle and democracy. From regions rich in battlefields and monuments standing tribute to brave warriors and soldiers; to majestic mountains inviting adrenalin adventures and tranquil rolling hills and green pastures that beckon you to relax and unwind. In addition to this there is a 600-kilometre coastline offering tropical beaches and opportunities to view whales and sharks, as well as conservation areas that are home to a wide range of wildlife including the ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.
DURBAN is a cosmopolitan city where visitors get to experience the sights and sounds of this typically African city which abounds with cultural diversity and multi-cultural traditions as well subtle sophistication and style. Start your day with a stroll along the paved promenade of Durban’s Golden Mile, enjoy an early morning dip in the warm Indian Ocean… take high tea at the Hilton Durban Hotel and end with sundowners on the pier overlooking the ocean. Head to Durban’s trendy Florida Road area where The Benjamin offers tranquillity and convenience in a boutique style setting. Or visit Umhlanga for a stay at the luxurious Oyster Box Hotel with its iconic red and white lighthouse views – where oysters and bubbly invite your start to the day and an authentic Durban curry tantalises the taste buds. Pop in to the Beverly Hills Hotel where the Umhlanga pier and sandy beaches are just a few steps away – enjoy a picnic on the beach, cocktails at the pool and relaxing spa treatments. NO DOUBT, THE BEST WAY TO VIEW WHALES AND DOLPHINS UP CLOSE IS FROM A BOAT THE ISLE OF CAPRI CRUISES offers an exhilarating 2 hour cruise into the ocean on their boat “Bafana”, to view one of the world’s most magnificent mammals, the Humpback Whale! The trip takes you into the Indian Ocean and close to the Mozambican current to encounter them at close range. All trips have friendly and fully qualified whale tour guides on board, to share their vast knowledge of the ocean and its creatures with you. Every year, from June to November, whales can frequently be seen off the KwaZulu-Natal coast on their migratory route, from the Southern Oceans to the warmer tropical waters for mating and giving birth, and on their return, heading for the nutrient rich waters of Antarctica. By law, you are not allowed to approach within 300m from a whale, unless you are aboard a boat permitted by the Department of Marine and Coastal Management. Permit holders are all members of the South African Boat-Based Whale Watching Association and as such are required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and to undergo training. The Isle of Capri Cruises boasts one of two whale watching permits awarded in Durban.
We also offer: • Hourly Harbour Cruises from 10am - 4pm (conditions apply) • Sea Cruises at 12.30pm and 2.30pm • Educational School Trips • Boat Rides • Party Cruises • Fishing

BY WILLIAM CHARLTON-PERKINS A rich variety of theatre is on offer in Durban’s CBD this season. Presented by The Playhouse Company in association with KwaMashu Community Advancement Project, Nandi The Musical, runs in THE DRAMA THEATRE from 4 to 7 April. With its cast of 25 backed by a six-piece band, the production boasts a splendid array of colourful African costumes, offset by dynamic dances and scintillating music, offering a thrilling theatre experience as it tells of the orphaned young Princess Nandi, whose abilities were doubted by the elders in her community. Nandi, a single parent, showing fearless and steadfast devotion to her child, the future King Shaka, consequently proved them wrong. The intrepid young mother won the lifelong adoration of her son, thus offering inspiration for countless future women of Africa and the world, through her shining life example. Another remarkable production to be seen at THE PLAYHOUSE is the multiple award-winning one-hander, TSWALO. This powerful combination of poetry, prose and physical story-telling, performed by Billy Langa, runs in The Loft Theatre between 8 and 12 May. The third landmark production coming to The Playhouse soon is GONE NATIVE – the critically acclaimed musical theatre production that bears the indelible imprint of the late South African jazz legend, Dr Hugh Masekela. Written and directed by the award-winning actor and playwright, Makhaola Ndebele, with music composed by Hugh Masekela, this is an inspiring piece of theatre that tells of love across the colour bar in 1950s apartheid South Africa. Gone Native plays in The Playhouse Drama theatre for a limited run from 15 to 19 May. Playhouse Company bookings are through Computicket. For more, visit www.playhousecompany.com. Friends of Music (FOM), in partnership with i Grandi Tenori presents the first DURBAN OPERA POTPOURRI. The concert will feature best operatic voices in KZN led by internationally based baritone Luthando Qave (Sweden). Also on the programme will be the Germany based tenor OWEN BOIKHUTSO METSILENG who has been selected to represent South Africa in this year’s BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Another FOM event to look forward to is a piano recital by the dynamic Latvian pianist AGNESE EGLINA who made a great impression in 2017 when she played a rousing programme of dance music. She has promised an equally exciting programme for her return visit on 30 April.

This music and dance delight, which runs for a short Sneddon season from 3 to 7 April. This popular venue features ace comedy act Gino Fabbri’s COMPLETELY NUTS, from 9 to 14 April. ‘Sanity’ is not a word very often associated with Fabbri `Sanity` is not a word very often associated with Fabbri, but this likeable and clean comedian will have you rolling in the aisles, as “madness takes its toll!” Also running at The Sneddon are a contemporary dance programme performed by Flatfoot Dance Company (24 – 28 April); and the National Creative Arts Youth Festival, from 2 to 5 May. WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
DURBAN With its sub-tropical climate, Durban is known as the holiday city and averages about 320 days of sunshine a year. The seemingly endless summers are hot and humid, and winters are wonderfully warm and sunny. Durban is most famous for its beaches, collectively known as the Golden Mile. The warm Indian Ocean waters offer swimming, surfing and scuba diving and the vast stretches of golden sands and the paved beach promenade offers ample space for walking, running and cycling. Durban has a vast selection of accommodation of a very high standard, ranging from 4- and 5-star beachfront hotels, self-catering apartments with sweeping views of the ocean to boutique hotels and guest houses, such as The Benjamin Hotel in trendy Florida Road, a popular entertainment area with a variety of dining options, in addition to being a WIFI hotspot zone. Care to ‘shop ‘till you drop’? Durban is a shopper’s paradise with several upmarket shopping centres offering brand name shops, quirky boutiques as well as well as numerous craft markets. The adventurous can climb the arch of the Moses Mabhida Stadium, and for an extra adrenalin rush, do the ‘Big Rush Big Swing’. No visit to Durban is complete without trying a legendary ‘bunny chow’ and Shisanyama - the Bunny Chow is a very simple affair consisting of a hollowed-out quarter or half loaf of bread filled with any available and is eaten with your fingers and the Shisanyama, which is meat barbequed over an open fire and is a popular experience in the local shebeens and township experience – visitors can absorb the vibe of the Rainbow Nation on a township tour pulsing with the life of both traditional and modern African life.
DID YOU KNOW? The Ohlange High School, which was founded by John Dube and his first wife Nokutela Dube, was the first school in South Africa started by a black person. John Dube was also the first president of what became the ANC – making it a significant that this would be his burial place.
Get to grip with the region’s history on the Woza eNanda Heritage Trail, which promotes some of Durban’s most important historical sites... Mahatma Gandhi, an icon of peace the world over, lived in the Phoenix Settlement north of Durban, and his home has been turned into a monument. From there you can head to the Ohlange Institute in Inanda Township, Gravesite of Dr John Dube and where Nelson Mandela cast his historic vote in South Africa’s first democratic elections. Or visit the Victoria Street Market with its Indian spice shops and traditional medicine market for a taste of trading the old-fashioned way. Step into the luxury lifestyle that the up-market suburb of Umhlanga offers - from an excellent choice of luxury hotels – several overlooking the sandy beaches and warm Indian Ocean, to expansive shopping malls offering a choice of brand-name and boutique shopping opportunities. Fine dining, luxurious spas and a variety of adventure activities ensure that visitors to Durban fill every moment with memory making experiences.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
SOUTH COAST There’s no doubt about it - visitors are spoilt for choice with what to do along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, the relaxed region that lies between Durban’s cosmopolitan ‘buzz’ and the Zulu Kingdom’s southernmost reaches. Subtropical forests, blue lagoons, golden beaches, rocky coves, the warm Indian Ocean and sunny weather – this is what makes the South Coast such a popular destination. This coastline is a haven of unique and less-explored places, set amidst rolling hills and fringed by palm fronds and wild strelitzias. The outdoor pursuits range from golf, to hiking, mountain biking, diving, whale watching and a range of activities in between. South Coast beaches, six of which have Blue Flag status, offer something for everyone, golden sands, tidal pools and beaches for swimming, surfing and sunbathing. The region boasts a selection of accommodation, ranging from luxury beach-side resorts and boutique hotels to self-catering apartments with expansive views. The Gorge Private Game Lodge & Spa located in the Oribi Nature Reserve is the perfect spot for a luxury getaway with its expansive views, beautiful suites and fabulous cuisine… not to mention the sublime spa experiences on offer. The adventurous can attempt an exhilarating swing into the gorge, try the world’s highest abseiling site, and in the rainy season (November to April) white-water rafting is an option. Scuba diving is a popular sport on the South Coast with excellent deep-sea diving areas at Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks which is the resting place for a number wrecks. Experience the delight of the ocean on a sea excursion and possibly share in the enchantment of watching dolphins frolic and swim around the boat and possibly spot a whale in season (May to November) – and if you’re there in winter, you may be lucky and experience the migration of millions of sardines, and event commonly referred to as the Sardine Run.
DID YOU KNOW? The Sardine Run, also referred to as “The Greatest Shoal on Earth’, is the seasonal movement of the Southern African pilchard ‘‘Sardinops sagax’ up the east coast of Africa from their spawning grounds in the cool waters off the Agulhas bank in the Cape. This movement of millions of sardines, in shoals of varying sizes, is followed by dolphins, sharks, whales and game fish – a spectacular sight for all who are fortunate enough to see it.
There are several shops and farm-stalls offering the abundant produce of the South Coast. Crocodile farms, banana plantations, candle factories and handmade crafts all add to the feast of local activities and produce on offer. Feast on locally grown nuts or savour the strong aroma of freshly ground coffee – locally grown, harvested and processed at the Beaver Creek Coffee Estate. Or just head to Margate where South Africa’s biggest motorcycle and music festival, South Coast Bike Fest™ (#SCBF19). This is where extreme action, fantastic food and quality musical entertainment will converge in a weekend of family fun (from 26 to 28 April) – the perfect outing for biking fanatics and enthusiasts, South African music lovers, shoppers and foodies. All this just a stones throw from the beach – truly and event for everyone.

ELEPHANT COAST The Elephant Coast incorporates the best of both land and sea safari experiences with its world-class conservation areas that include the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first proclaimed World Heritage Site, and Africa’s oldest game reserve, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. Natural and cultural diversity abound in this area that is home to an incredible 21 different ecosystems – from its dense evergreen forests of towering fig trees, swamp forests with tangled masses of greenery, thick coastal forest, mountainous sand dunes, and pristine beaches to the African bushveld with its thorn trees and abundance of wildlife.
DID YOU KNOW?
The whale watching season along the iSimangaliso coastline generally runs from June to December. This is when Humpback whales make their way from their summer feeding grounds in the Antarctic to warmer the warmer northern waters of Mozambique and Madagascar to breed and then south again later in the season back to the Antarctic. Southern Right whales are not as common in these waters, but are also sometimes seen.
Stretching from the iMfolozi River in the south to the Mozambique border in the north, this region is easily accessible from Durban as well as Swaziland, Mozambique and Mpumalanga. There are dozens of game reserves, beautiful beaches, deep sea fishing and diving on several reefs, mountain trails, cultural activities and historical sites.
January to lay their eggs – hatching occurs between January and March. This is a memorable sight and one that is closely monitored by resident researchers, fortunately there are several lodges in this area which offer guests this opportunity… as well as the privilege of being just a short stroll from beach or tucked into the coastal forest surrounded by bird calls.
This is one of the few destinations where a visitor can see the ‘Big Five’ before breakfast, watch dolphins and whales before lunch, explore the depths of the ocean in the afternoon and go turtle tracking after dinner. In addition to the Hluhluwe-Mfolozi game reserve there are several private game reserves in the region that offer guests luxury accommodation as well as a superb safari experience – with added extras such as bubbly and canapes under the stars and surprise bush dining.
With its lakes, lagoons, freshwater swamps and grasslands, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park supports more species of animal than many of the betterknown parks and deltas in Southern Africa. The St Lucia Estuary in the town of St Lucia is surrounded by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. From here whale watching, lake cruises, walking trails, horseback safaris or canoe trips are all options that are available.
The Kosi Bay Nature Reserve is an unspoiled area surrounding the rare and beautiful Kosi Bay lake system and is a tropical paradise of crystal-clear water, marshland, swamp and coastal forests that is home to about 250 species of bird. The pristine beaches in the region are the nesting ground of sea turtles that come to shore between the months of November and

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
ZULULAND Zululand as we know it comprises two regions, the region we fondly know as the ‘Zululand Coast’ situated on the East Coast of southern Africa and the inland region which has become known as the ‘Heart of the Zulu Kingdom’. The Zululand Coast’s golden shores are gently caressed by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, offering idyllic beaches and crystal-clear waters. An exciting wilderness stretches inland with endless rolling hills and meandering valleys as well as grassy plains teaming with wildlife. Forest sanctuaries and misty hills create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility –interrupted by a plethora of birdcalls. A visit to the quaint village of Mtunzini will have you strolling beneath majestic Raphia Palms – a forest of them in fact. Walk along the raised boardwalk through the mangroves, spend an early morning birdwatching, hike through coastal forest or take a boat cruise on the estuary. Set within the bustling harbour city of Richards Bay, south of the harbour, is the Richards Bay Game Reserve. This reserve boasts a huge community of aquatic birds as well as hippo and crocodiles. The lagoon, which offers spectacular wetland scenery is home to several bird species including flamingo, cormorant and several other waders – and if you’re lucky you may get a sighting of the rare pink-backed pelican. Once you’re done with wildlife, take a dip in the warm Indian Ocean at the Alkantstrand Beach and complete your day with sundowners and dinner at the Waterfront. Head inland towards the ‘Heart of The Zulu Kingdom’ where its echoes of the past blend seamlessly with Zulu life today. It’s an area where the fascinating culture of the Zulu people, rich in tradition and symbolism, is visibly evident and where each visit calls for an authentic ‘Zulu experience’. Many tourist destinations offer insightful opportunities to experience living Zulu culture at first hand… take an ox wagon to Zulu villages of bee-hive huts and experience

Some interesting sites in the Amajuba District include Fort Amiel Museum, Hilldrop House of Sir Ryder Haggard and O’Niel’s Cottage Museum at the bottom of Amajuba Mountain. Art buffs will appreciate the Carnegie Art Gallery in Newcacstle which boasts a small but rich selection of contemporary South African art. For the adventurous the region offers white-water rafting down the rapids of the mighty Thukela, or kloofing if the river level is low, hiking or mountainbiking in the magnificent Drakensberg Mountains, or even horseback riding in the hoof prints of Victorian soldiers. Other more relaxed corporate pursuits include a round of golf on one of the 9- and 18-hole courses, trout fishing in the cool waters near Newcastle or bird watching along the Amajuba Birding Meander.

WHAT, WHERE & WHEN
NORTH COAST Just north of Durban and a stones throw from the King Shaka International Airport is the Zulu Kingdom’s North Coast, also known as the Dolphin Coast. This region offers luxury, beauty, sport and history – an unspoilt natural environment with a lush tropical coastline and the warm Indian Ocean. It is a malaria-free region of infinite beaches and gentle rolling hills covered in sugar cane, a place to indulge the senses – with sublime spa experiences, great restaurants and a buzzing nightlife.
The North Coast is well located with easy access to both Durban and the game reserves of Zululand and the Elephant Coast and offers visitors a choice of luxury hotels and resorts as well as boutique hotels. Its balmy sub-tropical weather makes it a year-round favourite for holiday makers… its unspoilt beaches are perfect for sun-worshipping and long strolls, its rocky shores and tidal pools ideal for exploration and snorkelling and there’s nothing quite like a dip in the warm Indian Ocean and there are beautiful reefs off-shore which will give divers hours of enjoyment – there are three artificial reefs that were created by the Oceanographic Research Institute where a wide variety of marine life can be seen. Whilst its natural setting provides opportunities for several outdoor adventures from horse riding and hiking, surfing and fishing to mountain biking, golf and micro-lighting, down-time can be spent luxuriating at one of the region’s luxury spas. For kids, and the curious-minded, there are the crocodile and animal farms. This region boasts some of the finest golf courses in the Southern Hemisphere – golfers visiting this region will be spoilt for choice with no less than six golf courses of varying standards of difficulty available. The Zimbali Golf Course which is amongst the top 10 courses in South Africa in terms of the ultimate golfing experience and a must visit
DID YOU KNOW?
Chief Albert Luthuli was formally awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, on 10 December 1961 for his non-violent stance in the fight for liberation. He was the first African and individual outside of Europe and the Americas to be awarded this prestigious accolade. His famous statement “the road to freedom is via the cross” clearly depicts his dedication to freedom and his aversion to violence.
to any keen golfer excepting the challenges of narrow fairways and bunkers surrounding the greens. A fascinating cultural mix exists in this region that was once part of the great Zulu empire built by King Shaka. This was created by the subsequent wave of adventurers moving into the area, from the arrival of colonialists, the French Mauritian sugar cane growers to the indentured Indian labourers. During the 1860s indentured Indian labourers arrived to work in the sugar plantations and the town is one of the largest sugar-producing districts in the world and Hindu temples are testament to their having made Tongaat, the oldest Indian community in South Africa, their home. Sample some of their culinary delights, including pineapple-on-a-stick covered with tangy spices. For culture and history, visit historic battle sites such as the Ultimatum Tree, Ndondakusuka or Fort Pearson, or visit the burial place of the great Zulu King or the Luthuli Museum in KwaDakuza. Zulu hospitality is warm and the people friendly, and they are proud to show you their heritage.

UKHAHLAMBA
DRAKENSBERG The Drakensberg Mountains, reaching 3,000 metres above sea level, are part of the 243,000-hectare uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Zulu name, uKhahlamba, meaning ‘barrier of spears’ and the Afrikaans name Drakensberge, meaning ‘dragon mountains’, aptly describes this awe-inspiring region. This area of seasonally snow-capped peaks, sheer cliffs and deep gorges and rolling hills offers memorable experiences and activities to suit everyone, from the adrenalin rush of tubing down the mighty Thukela to a leisurely round of golf or being pampered at a spa. The SOUTHERN DRAKENSBERG offers visitors a wealth of outdoor activities; from trout fishing, and hiking to 4x4 excursions, such as traversing the highest pass-road in South Africa. This route takes visitors along the upper Mkomazana River up Sani Pass to the border with Lesotho (2874 metres above sea-level). Or experience the awesome Drakensberg on horseback. From hour-long rides in the foothills to a three-day expedition into Lesotho in the safe hands of a local guide and a sure-footed Basotho pony. Splashy Fen, the longest running music festival in the country, brings thousands of people together for what has become the ultimate outdoor music experience - it is an annual event held near Underberg. The CENTRAL DRAKENSBERG region is a mecca for the adventurous… take the challenge of one on the many rock-climbing routes in the central Drakensberg or feel the adrenalin rush provided by abseiling, kloofing and white water rafting or take a helicopter ride to view the majestic peaks from above –- a great ‘wow’ experience to include in any luxury itinerary. Seek out ancient Bushman rock art, evidence of the San people who lived in the area long time ago. These paintings are one of the Drakensberg’s greatest cultural treasures, with some 20 000 individual rock paintings having been recorded at 500 different cave and overhang sites between Royal National Park in the north and Bushman’s Nek in the south.
DID YOU KNOW? Splashy Fen started in 1990 after a night of red wine around a fire when Peter Ferraz and Bart Fokkens decided that the farm Splashy Fen was a perfect location for a music gathering. With only a hundred or so fans were anticipated, the 400-odd musicians and festival goers at the inaugural festival certainly set the scene for growth - by 1995 Splashy had become the biggest music festival in the country and has welcomed in excess of 150 000 people through its gates.
The NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG is home to the spectacular Amphitheatre, which is possibly the most photographed feature of the region, as well as the source of the Tugela (uThukela) River which plunges some 950 metres over the edge of the Mont-aux-Sources Plateau in spectacular fashion. The Mweni Cultural Centre offers a glimpse into local culture and the option to purchase hand crafted goods and medicinal plants. The centre also provides accommodation and a range of activities including hiking, swimming, canoeing, horse riding, and bird watching. With its choice of activities, selection of luxurious country lodges and boutique hotels, expansive mountain views, delicious cuisine and crackling fire places the Drakensberg certainly ticks all the boxes for a luxurious rejuvenating escape.
